WELCOME TO THE MUSEUM OF MEDIEVAL ARTIFACTS Seventh grade is such an interesting year in history! We travel the globe and learn about medieval civilizations that flourished and failed and flourished again. We learn about sites of encounter and about the interactions of people from far away locations. We discover similarities between seemingly different civilizations. And we learn about the longevity of cultures and begin to make connections between then and now. Evidence from the middle ages is still very observable in our modern world and through inquiry-based research, design thinking, and project-based learning, we are very excited to bring some of the past alive for you in the Museum of Medieval Artifacts.

QUANTUM ACADEMY 7TH GRADE PROJECT-BASED LEARNING One of the most rewarding things to experience is to see students put the big pieces together over a long period of time and come to conclusions on their own. Working on a project of this magnitude has afforded the students the opportunity to literally put the pieces together; not just arrange them - but to create the pieces themselves. And along the way, students have begun to see how the design process and our Quantum Academy values have a place in the real world.
Studying medieval societies through primary source documents; using the design thinking model to empathize with historical figures and improve their situations or invent new tools for their specific needs; understanding the use of music as a communication tool by hand-crafting and learning to play instruments; and role-playing in simulations that brought medieval societies to life are all ways that this year’s 7th grade students experienced history. These experiences gave them
a broad sense of history and an appreciation and understanding of the people who lived during those times. Because of this, there is a richness to the artifacts you will find in our museum. The items are hand-crafted with careful attempt to recreate original historic pieces and to give the observer an authentic experience of truly visiting a Museum of Medieval Artifacts.
INTRODUCING THE
MUSEUM DIRECTORS One year-long Project-Based Learning collaboration; sixty-one 7th grade students; eight societies; multiple geographic locations; two genres of medieval music; four months of medieval art; three weeks to wrap it all up for presentation; and six young ladies have made it happen. They have organized, researched, managed, curated, designed, and directed an entire grade level of students along the journey of creating the very first Museum of Medieval Artifacts at Quantum Academy.

OUR TEACHERS ZOE CARPENTER & CHRISTY HANSEN We’re grateful to Mrs. Carpenter and Mrs. Hansen for their support of the creation of our Museum. They supplied us with materials when we ran out, gave us extra work time, and encouraged us. Thank you!
George Oakley, Custodian and Care-taker of Quantum Academy
OUR HERO GEORGE OAKLEY Mr. Oakley has been a huge part of supporting our work on the museum all year long. From helping us with our Taiko drums, to helping us build things, to keeping our work areas safe and tidy, and making it a fun environment to be in. We are grateful for his smile, laughter, and guidance.
Vanessa MiramontesSolorzano, 6th PBL
Kim Buhler 6th Science & Math
OUR COLLABORATORS VANESSA MIRAMONTESSOLORZANO & KIM BUHLER These two sixth grade teachers have all the goods! We’re thankful for all the tools, supplies, glue guns, hair dryers; you name it. Thank you for making it possible for us to create the MOMA!
INSIDE THE EXHIBITS OF THE MOMA In keeping with the California State Standards for World History and Geography of Medieval to Early Modern Times, students in seventh grade study the history and geography of great civilizations as well as the social, cultural, and technological changes that occurred during the years A.D. 500-1789. In each exhibit, you will find hand-crafted artifacts from the various areas of history: Geography, Religion, Achievements, Politics and Government, Economy and Trade, and Social Structures. We are very fortunate to also have artifacts and items on loan from the private collections of the Bostwick, Bove, Bruck, Burns, Hernandez, Mayfield, and Richter families.

Once we started spreading the word that we were attempting to put a museum together, the items started flowing in. The students and I were and still are astonished at how many artifacts we are able to connect to our studies this year. We have an
item for nearly every exhibit in the museum thanks to so many generous donations and loans! Do you have something special you’d like to put on display? Connect with us next year for MOMA 20!

BEHIND THE SCENES OF MOMA 19 It’s not only History and writing; the depth and breadth of project-based learning engages students in real-world skills and oftentimes they experience real-world struggles. Embedding the design thinking model into our daily routine meant that students went back to the drawing board routinely! But those experiences taught them that the real world will demand revision; it will insist upon multiple ideations and reiterations. The real world requires teamwork and collaboration; discussions and arguing and compromising and flexibility. It will crash the night before a finished product is ready for public viewing and the real world will teach you to have a back up plan. Or two. I couldn’t be more proud of the perseverance I have seen
from the students this year; of the empathy they have developed for societies who struggled to flourish during the middle ages; and for the way they have grown to collaborate and create together despite personalities and personal preferences. And I am particularly impressed with the leadership I have seen blossom in so many of them. From DBQs (Document Based Questioning), to essay writing, to research, to employing design thinking, projectbased learning and deep and complex thinking strategies; and experiencing real-world applications of those skills, the 7th grade students have learned a great deal this year and I am honored to have been on the journey with them.
World Music Guru and Band Teacher, Kathleen Barlow (right)
KATHLEEN BARLOW WORLD MUSIC GURU At the beginning of the school year, Mrs. Barlow announced that she had two small openings for potential classes if anyone was interested. That was the beginning of a beautiful thing! It was the ideation of what has now become a World Music program. Planning together, Ms. Barlow brought her passion for all things music to our medieval studies and we couldn’t be more blessed to have her as a partner in this journey! We would not have the museum without her collaboration this year. Thank you, Mrs. Barlow!
Quilling Expert and Project Volunteer, Shelley Schott (right)
SHELLEY SCHOTT QUILLING EXPERT Parent volunteers are the best and Mrs. Schott is better than the best! Neither of us knowing anything about quilling, I laid out my grandiose vision of a huge board filled with images representing the studies I knew the students would do throughout the year. Instead of just quilling a project, my goal was to make it meaningful to our curriculum. Understanding this, she took the helm and set full sail. With the students, she helped to plan, prepare and guide them to our masterpiece! Thank you, Mrs. Schott!
Idea Instigator and PBL Teacher, Amy Murphy (top left)
AMY MURPHY IDEA INSTIGATOR I feel very blessed to be instigating young minds here at Quantum. I love that I can dream big and inspire students to follow their passions and dive into history and writing with an inventive mindset. I’m especially excited about our first iteration of the MOMA and hope that this year inspires the upcoming 7th graders to brainstorm the possibilities for what they will create! As Albert Einstein said, “Your imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.”
