I welcome the Old Salt King of the Beach Tournament and Waterfront Festival back to Madeira Beach once again. This long tradition of anglers competing to win the crown and become King is an honor to have in our city. This has become over the years the top King Fish Tournament in the country and attracts thousands of anglers from around the Gulf coast states and eastern seaboard. Our local economy benefits from this event and has done so throughout the decades that it has been held here in our City. The tournament and festival brings good family fun to, not only the local residents, but to all that attend from around our county and state. The best part is knowing that the proceeds from this event fund local charities and continue to support the youth programs to keep kids fishing and on the water. Good luck, tight lines Travis Palladeno Mayor of Madeira Beach

Having been tournament fishing for over 20 years we all have that perfect tournament in our head and this one fit the bill. Every Captain/ Team has that one tournament they want to win and without exception for Team WiseGuy, it was King of The Beach. KOB is a must on any teams tournament schedule and the fact that it takes place in our home waters makes it even more special. Having fished tournaments all over the country for kingfish, The Old Salts KOB hands down is the best event we have ever fished as a team. From the captains party to the weigh in it is a first class operation. Let’s also not overlook the $50,000 first place prize!!!!!! In preparation for the tournament it was business as usual. We obtained a well full of blue runners early in the week and secured them in our custom bait pen at the dock. Friday is boat and tackle prep day: Fuel, Ice, Chum, Food and Drink, Rods Rigged and ready for action. In the afternoon we went and cast netted a well of Mullet to add to our bait spread. All week I had made up my mind where we would be fishing based on a gut feeling of where a big fish would be. Due to work obligations, we as a team could not pre-fish and went with that gut feeling. On tournament morning we loaded the boat and left the inlet with a well full of bait and pointed the boat towards our destination. On board that day were Sarah Dykens, Emily Mangano, Stevie Dellane, George Lutich and Myself. Everyone with the exception of George had fished King of the Beach in the past. On the way to our destination our entire crew was joking wouldn’t it be nice to catch a 60 and turn around a go home. We arrived at our destination approximately 5 minutes after lines in and began to deploy our spread consisting of mullet and blue runners. Within the third bait being deployed two rods began to scream and we all were very disappointed to see barracuda jumping behind the boat. We made the decision to make a small move and re-deploy baits to avoid the Barracuda Shuffle. Stevie grabbed the first rod and was

King Mackerel: Scomberomorus Cavalla deploying the first bait after the move when a giant king mackerel sky rocketed less than 50 feet behind the boat with Stevie’s bait sideways in its mouth. In unison everyone began to scream, “Did you see that? That’s a giant fish” and the fight was on. The fish began to make dragscreaming runs in an effort to get away. At one point we could see the spool on the reel. With the boat on a partial plane we chased the fish down till it was straight up and down. We knew the fish was big, but didn’t get to appreciate the size untill the fish rolled up next to the boat. Stevie angled the fish into gaff range and I stuck it right in the shoulder. When I went to lift the fish in the boat I realized then how big this fish really was. The fish hit the deck it was all high fives and screams. Could we have just done what every tournament fisherman dreams of? A tournament winner just 20 minutes after lines in. After securing the fish in the fish bag and cleaning the deck we began the slow and agonizing ride back to the dock. On the way home we had to stop one more time and look at the fish and something that normally doesn’t happen did. The fish looked bigger in the bag than on the deck. We have caught numerous 50’s in our tournament career and knew this fish definitely had a 5 in front of it. We proceeded to the dock and immediately jumped in the Jacuzzi to relax after the crazy morning. After the idea of being back at the dock at 9 am settled in. I remembered the measurements of the fish our friends on Pro Marine had weighed the week previous. That fish was 65.85lbs. I ran and grabbed a tape measure and the fish measured ½ inch shorter than their fish. Could this fish be 60 plus?
Regulations for the Gulf State Waters Minimum Size Limit.............. 24” fork length Daily Bag Limit . ..... 2 per harvester per day Legal Gear: hook and line and spearing only Habitat and Fishing Tips: King mackerel are found in both nearshore and offshore waters throughout Florida, often near schools of baitfish. Like many of the pelagic species, kings prefer water temperatures above 68 degrees, so they migrate to warmer waters in the fall of the year. Kings feed primarily on schooling bait fish and squid and are commonly caught while trolling with flashy spoons or duster rigged with a whole cigar minnow. Free lining or slow trolling with live baits (cigar minnows, herring, sardines, blue runners) is a great way to hook the larger and more solitary kings. Free lining a live squid at night, especially over reefs that hold baitfish, can also be very effective. Tackle requirements depend on the size of fish and the method of fishing. Spinning or bait-casting tackle with 20 to 30 pound monofilament line is sufficient when free lining live baits as long as you have enough spool capacity for the initial run after hookup. While kingfish do not have great endurance, they are very fast and will commonly take 100 to 200 yards of line off the reel in the first 30 seconds of the fight. For trolling, 30 to 50 pound trolling tackle is commonly used. Kings have very sharp teeth requiring the use of wire or very heavy monofilament leader. State Record: 90 lb, caught near Key West
We as a team decided we wouldn’t wait and wanted to get the weigh when it opened to avoid the long lines and the agony of what did the beast really weigh. When we arrived at the scales the team at Old Salts was waiting for us. We went through the tournament check in and they checked our fish and we proceeded to the stage. Moment of Truth. The fish was placed on the scale and Tommy announced it 62.95 Pounds. Could we have just won KOB? We then had the painstaking process of waiting for everyone else to weigh. When there is over 600 boats trust me that’s not fun. When they finally announced the last fish and that we were the winner it sunk it. The perfect tournament day had just happened. We would like to thank all of our sponsors who support us. Written by: Team Wise Guy Winners of 2016 Spring King of the Beach

in a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Carefully place the fillets skin-side up in the pan and cook until golden brown, about 3 minutes per side, and then transfer to a broiler-safe plate. Carefully drain the oil and wipe out the skillet with a paper towel. Replace the pan and heat the remaining oil over medium-high heat until hot. Cook the garlic and shallots, stirring frequently, 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in the dried herbs, mushrooms and scallions and cook 1 minute. Pour in the wine and half of the lime juice, season with salt and pepper and cook, stirring frequently, about 1 minute more. Melt in the butter until incorporated, and then remove the skillet from the heat. Pour the mushroom mixture over the fish and top with the cheese. Place under the broiler until the cheese is melted, browned and bubbly, 3 to 5 minutes. Transfer to a serving plate and serve immediately, squeezing the remaining lime juice over the fish, if desired.

Habitat and Fishing Tips: Spanish mackerel are a pelagic, fast swimming fish that are prevalent throughout Florida’s coastal waters when water temperatures exceed 70 degrees. To remain in warm water, Spanish mackerel migrate out of the northern parts of the state in the fall of the year and return in April with the warming waters. They are frequently found in shallow, clear water over grass beds and along sandy beaches where they feed on schools of baitfish. Spanish mackerel are aggressive feeders that will strike a wide variety of natural and artificial baits, so they can be very easy to catch. Many anglers identify the location of Spanish mackerel by trolling or watching for birds diving on schools of baitfish, which often indicates that mackerel are forcing the bait to the surface. Angling techniques include trolling or casting with small shiny spoons, dusters or jigs. Light spinning or bait-casting tackle with 10 to 15 pound monofilament line is adequate; however, 30 to 60 pound monofilament leader is required due to the mackerel’s razor sharp teeth. State Record: 12 lb, caught near Ft. Pierce

Crabby’s Fishing Corner: Spanish Mackerel The fall air is finally starting to cut through the thick summer heat and with it comes an abundance of fishing options. As the water temperature starts to fall out of the 80’s and approaches the mid 70’s big Kingfish and Spanish Mackerel will invade the beaches, reefs, shipping channel, and Tampa Bay. The beautiful thing about this fishery in the fall is that the hordes of baitfish are already here and that makes finding fish a little easier. When trying to locate fish there are a few crucial conditions you will need to find first. Clean water is the first. Macs do not like dirty or stained water, they are a visual predator that like to use their speed to ambush pray from underneath. The next is structure. Structure will help hold bait in an area which will in turn keep the fish around and feeding. Big Kingfish are especially fond of structure because it holds their favorite food, Spanish Mackerel. There are many types of structures from hard bottom, reefs, wrecks, ledges, channel markers and even large container ships that have been on anchor for a few days. You can do some research on these ships before you go at marinetrafic.com. This site gives you names, locations and information on ships and will let you know how long they have been at anchor. Most important is bait. Bait comes in all shapes and sizes but there are some that just drive big kings and Spanish crazy. Large Spanish Mackerel love 4 to 5 inch live pilchards or Spanish sardines. I like to fish them on 4000 size spinning reels loaded with 10 pound mono with 30 pound fluorocarbon leader and a long shank 2/0 hook. Using fluorocarbon leader instead of wire will greatly improve your bites and the long shank of the hook will help guard the leader from their teeth. Big Kings love big baits. If you are looking for a stud kingfish to put you on the board at the Old Salt King of the Beach, big baits will help you key in on larger fish. Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, mullet, silver trout, bluefish, and 12” blue runners are prime baits. Mullet, ladyfish, and runners can be caught a few days ahead of time and kept in a large bait pen as long as their well-fed. Others must be caught on site and Spanish need to be caught and put back out immediately as they will quickly die in a well. Make sure to use #3 or #4 wire with a 2/0 nose (J hook) and two #4 4x strong stinger (treble) hooks that cover ¾ of the bait you are using. If you do get the big bite make sure that everyone on your boat has a job to do,
clearing lines, downriggers, securing hooks and do not forget to take the safety tube off the end of the gaff. Good luck and enjoy some world class drag screaming action right in our back yard. There is a sneaky little delectable fish skirting along the bottom that many of us have caught but usually by accident. They have some of the underwater world’s best camouflage, reactions, and a wicked set of teeth. Who is this menacing devil you ask… Mr. Flounder. Like I said anyone who has put some time into fishing in Florida has caught one or two of these menaces, but fall is the time of year when you can focus in on them and get some solid numbers. In the fall flounder begin to migrate offshore to spawn. This journey gives them a hearty appetite and funnels large concentrations into the bay area passes, from Hurricane Pass down to Southwest Pass. Flounder will gather and migrate to the gulf only to meet back up again offshore and have a flatfish party. Tackle does not need to be heavy but I suggest braided line for sensitivity as flounder can have a subtle bite. Finger size live bait weather its whitebait, mullet, chubs or pinfish should be fished on a Carolina rig, (sliding egg sinker above the leaders swivel). Choose a sinker that will be able to keep contact with the bottom but light enough to let the current move the bait. I like to use an 18 inch piece of 25 or 30lb mono leader and a 1/0 J hook. The key to finding schools of flounder is to find patches of sand around rocks, seawalls, grass, or docks. Once you find one fish keep fishing that spot as they will stack up this time of year and competition for food is high. When you go to clean your fish remember there are bonus fillets on the belly side. Thank you for your time and as always if you have any questions about anything on the water you can contact me at Madeira Beach Marina (727) 399-2631.
