Here are the common go-to baits for locals in and around Tampabay. The baits we use are strongly determined by weather and temperatures. Here are a few tried and true. Check with our numerous bait shops for what is hot the week of the King.
Hot Inshore baits: Hook-n-line caught Ladyfish, Silver Mullet and Shad (cast net).
Near Shore wrecks: Always a must, Blue Runners (BIG as possible), Ladyfish and Cigar Minnows. These are caught on flats, passes, bridges and rock ledges.

GREETINGS FROM THE OLD SALT PRESIDENT So let me start this article off with stating that y’all said you wanted to fish and last Fall we listened. We managed to pull off a modified version amongst the COVID year we all faced. It took a village to pull it off and I need to thank our Board of Directors and our committee members that worked so hard to come up with the vision and a cohesive plan to be able to get it to pass. We are thankful all our sponsors in our city, county and state that worked together and gave us the green light to have the fall King in such an unusual fashion. It was no small feat I promise you that! Old Salt, for 50 years, has always been and always will be ALL about the anglers, our members and our community! A huge thanks to all that participated in our fall event despite the weird climate that we were all facing to make it the success that it was! “We’re getting back to normal” and are so excited to have a full festival with the tournament this Spring. That’s right, we are having a three day extravaganza celebrating King fishing! We will have vendors, boat displays and some of the best local restaurants to serve you along with a full bar, beers and bands on Friday followed by a weigh in on Saturday. What??? You read it right, but wait. Is there a catch? (No pun intended!) Always read the small print. As of the publishing of this article we still need to be COVID compliant. Which means you must have your mask/face shield to be on the field, social distance and comply with the rest of the regulations that are asked of you. One thing I learned when I became a member at 16 years old, almost 30 years ago, is that this organization is made up of anglers of all walks of life. No matter your social or financial status, if you enjoy Inshore, Offshore or Commercial Fishing is that we all come together as one community at the end of the day with a common passion and a ton of BS! To this day our traveling anglers that fish all over the southeast tell me how they feel like home when they’re here. Thanks to all of you. I think the rest of the country needs to take a page out of our playbook that we’ve created over the last 50 years. I know I can say I’m proud to be part of this Great organization and so should you. Till I see you at the captains meeting tight lines and calm seas both on and off the water!
Enjoy and stay safe!

CAPTAIN ANTHONY BELMONTE WITH TEAM FIGURED IT OUT, WON THE 2020 FALL KOTB WITH A 39.78 KINGFISH WINNING THEM 51K. In a last-minute decision to enter the King of the Beach Fall Tournament, with it being our first time ever fishing King of the Beach, we were unknowingly about to make memories of a lifetime. We were unsure what to expect but we all trusted Captain Anthony Belmonte’s knowledge and experience fishing the Gulf of Mexico for his entire life and for being friends for many years. We knew we would at least have a lot of fun at the end of the day. The day prior to the tournament we headed out, catching quality bait and fishing areas where Captain Anthony thought the fall weather patterns would put decent sized fish in the box. We managed to hook up to some nice sized kings and Spanish mackerel. After staying out later than expected, we arrived back exhausted and sore, yet anxious to head back early in the morning, knowing we would be in a bumpy and possible wet ride. As we left one another for the night we all began dreaming of the possibility of hooking a fish that placed on the board. As we were all in bed trying to get some sleep the group chat began to go off and we were on the search for a fish bag in the middle of the night. After calling around the fishing community to see if anyone was willing to part with their fishing bag, we realized Captain Anthony’s mom had one at the house and off Captain Anthony went at 11:00 PM at night to pick up the bag that was undoubtedly much needed.
Once we arrived at the dock later than expected, we went to pull our quality baits we caught the day prior, and soon realized we were left with half the bait. Off to a late start, we headed out in the expected rough weather. As we headed out in 2-3 ft seas with an east wind, Captain Anthony navigated us to the first spot. Arriving a half hour later than anticipated, we finally got our lines out. During our first pass we reeled in one kingfish. After an hour of trolling in the area with only a few kings with east winds picking up, Captain Anthony made the decision to move closer to shore and still very few boats in sight. As we approached the new area, we instantly hooked up to a 20 lb king and decided to circle back around for another pass. Hooking into some more quality kings, but nothing to be that excited about we knew we had the area we were looking for, but we were starting to burn through our quality blue runners. It was about 9:30 in the morning when we had our last big blue runner on the center line. The center longline began to scream, and Paul grabbed the rod. As the kingfish took Paul up and down the starboard side. Amanda and Brett cleared the lines as the team gained enthusiasm. Anthony gaffed the kingfish and even before she hit the deck, the hooks popped right out of the kingfish! O L DSA LT FISH I N G.O RG

As we all stood there high fiving one another and celebrating our catch we began to realize that we may have the winning fish in our boat. Given our excitement and lack of tournament experience we snagged a few pictures with the fish then eventually packed the fish in the fish bag and placed ice around it. Paul was insistent that we had the winning fish, and it was time to head back, he really thought it was the winning fish. It was still too early in the day and the rest of the team decided that we continue to fish until later in the day. As we managed to land a few other quality fish, including what would be a 3rd place kingfish in the woman’s division by Amanda. The weather turning increasingly sporty, bait was running low, and we decided we were going to take our chance with the kingfish caught that morning not thinking it would actually bring in first place.
As we arrived to ROC Park we stood in a long line of anxious anglers awaiting the weigh in results of their prized catch for the day. During the inspection of the kingfish one volunteer stated that we had the biggest fish so far, it was reassuring but still couldn’t have thought we would take 1st place. As we stood on stage and anxiously awaited the scale to balance out they soon announced a weight of 39.78 lbs. Excitedly walking off stage we looked at the hundreds of teams still waiting in line to weighin, we were eager to see if the kingfish would hold on the leader board. We began to jump and scream in excitement when the last fish was weighed. Captain Anthony has always said he would win King of the Beach one day and it was one of his prime goals for his fishing career! We are looking forward to fishing the King of the Beach Spring tournament!

KING MACKEREL SCOMBEROMORUS CAVALLA REGULATIONS FOR THE GULF STATE WATERS MINIMUM SIZE LIMIT: 24” FORK LENGTH DAILY BAG LIMIT: 2 PER HARVESTER PER DAY LEGAL GEAR: hook and line and spearing only HABITAT AND FISHING TIPS: King mackerel are found in both nearshore and offshore waters throughout Florida, often near schools of baitfish. Like many of the pelagic species, kings prefer water temperatures above 68 degrees, so they migrate to warmer waters in the fall of the year. Kings feed primarily on schooling bait fish and squid and are commonly caught while trolling with flashy spoons or duster rigged with a whole cigar minnow. Free lining or slow trolling with live baits (cigar minnows, herring, sardines, blue runners) is a great way to hook the larger and more solitary kings. Free lining a live squid at night, especially over reefs that hold baitfish, can also be very effective. Tackle requirements depend on the size of fish and the method of fishing. Spinning or bait-casting tackle with 20 to 30 pound monofilament line is sufficient when free lining live baits as long as you have enough spool capacity for the initial run after hookup. While kingfish do not have great endurance, they are very fast and will commonly take 100 to 200 yards of line off the reel in the first 30 seconds of the fight. For trolling, 30 to 50 pound trolling tackle is commonly used. Kings have very sharp teeth requiring the use of wire or very heavy monofilament leader. STATE RECORD: 93 lb, caught near Key West O L DSA LT FISH I N G.O RG

SPANISH MACKEREL SCOMBEROMORUS MACULATUS REGULATIONS FOR THE GULF STATE WATERS MINIMUM SIZE LIMIT: 12” FORK LENGTH DAILY BAG LIMIT: 15 PER HARVESTER PER DAY LEGAL GEAR: beach or haul seine, cast net, hook and line, spear HABITAT AND FISHING TIPS: Spanish mackerel are a pelagic, fast swimming fish that are prevalent throughout Florida’s coastal waters when water temperatures exceed 70 degrees. To remain in warm water, Spanish mackerel migrate out of the northern parts of the state in the fall of the year and return in April with the warming waters. They are frequently found in shallow, clear water over grass beds and along sandy beaches where they feed on schools of baitfish. Spanish mackerel are aggressive feeders that will strike a wide variety of natural and artificial baits, so they can be very easy to catch. Many anglers identify the location of Spanish mackerel by trolling or watching for birds diving on schools of baitfish, which often indicates that mackerel are forcing the bait to the surface. Angling techniques include trolling or casting with small shiny spoons, dusters or jigs. Light spinning or bait-casting tackle with 10 to 15 pound monofilament line is adequate; however, 30 to 60 pound monofilament leader is required due to the mackerel’s razor sharp teeth. STATE RECORD: 12 lb, caught near Ft. Pierce

CRISPY FRIED SPANISH MACKEREL NUGGETS PREPARATION
INGREDIENTS
1. Place the buttermilk in a bowl and add the fish • 2 Spanish mackerel fillets about a pound, nuggets. Stir to make sure all are covered and cut into cubes approximately 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 let sit for five to ten minutes. Set aside. inches square 2. Add the cornmeal, flour, Creole seasoning, and • 1 cup buttermilk salt to a pie p late or large shallow bowl. Mix well. • 1 cup yellow cornmeal 3. Take the nuggets out of the buttermilk and let • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour any excess drip off. Place the fish in the cornmeal • 1 tablespoon Creole seasoning mixture and toss. Make sure that the nuggets • 1 teaspoon kosher salt are coated on all sides. Place on a wire rack and • 2 cups peanut oil see tips below repeat until you have all of the fish coated. 4. Place a cast-iron skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat and add the oil. You want at least 1/2 inch of oil in the bottom. 5. Before adding the fish, test to make sure the oil is hot by dropping in a pinch of the cornmeal mixture. It should immediately start to sizzle. If it doesn’t, let the oil heat a few more minutes. The oil should ideally be at 375 degrees F. If the oil is too cool, your fish will be greasy if the oil is too hot, the crust will burn before the insides cook. 6. When the oil is hot, add the nuggets and make sure not to crowd them. You will most likely have to cook the fish in two batches. 7. Let the fish fry, turning as needed, for a total of two to three minutes or until the nuggets are golden brown and crispy on all sides. 8. Use a slotted spoon or fish turner to remove the nuggets from the oil. Place on a paper towel or wire rack to drain. 9. Repeat as needed until all of the fish is cooked. Serve immediately. YOUR GUIDE TO BECOMING RICH AND FAMOUS ON THE LOCAL KINGFISH CIRCUIT
Fishing Report This piece on how to catch a smoker king was written by our dearly departed friend Jon West for Local Angler Magazine in October of 2006. Jon was the King of local knowledge where Kingfish were concerned. Read, enjoy and learn. 15 years later, this article is still very accurate on catching Kings.
NINE PLACES TO CATCH A SMOKER KING Landmarks, Ancient Dilly Holes, Conditional Hot Zones & Parking Lots They are the collection of local historical “smoker” spots and they are all that and more. Some are close to shore, even inside Tampa Bay, while others sit far out in the Gulf. These are places where big kingfish swim, small fortunes have been won and many an angling prayer has been answered. Regardless of whether you are a die hard tournament angler looking to win the King of the Beach Tournament or a reclusive solo angler who only fishes on Wednesdays, catching big kingfish is about being in the right place at the right time.
By: Captain Jon West Local Angler Magazine
And being in that right place at the right time starts with a handful of right places. Local Angler editor Jon West has been competing in local king tournaments since the first, sevenday marathon event held out of Gators back in 1991. He’s always been a bit reluctant to“give it all up” but as he and other successful tournament teams will tell you, all the free information in the world doesn’t get up at 1 a.m. to catch bait or run 120 miles in six footers. If you were to survey the money board at every tournament over the last 15 years, the following locales would dominate the board. The Egmont Channel The Egmont Channel, stretching from the Port of Tampa inside Tampa Bay, all the way out to the Whistler Buoy, is a 20-plus mile artificial reef. The sheer walls of the channel, coupled with the FAD-like chains that secure its marker buoys, are a never-ending bait magnet. And where there is bait, there is kingfish. More tournament-winning fish have been caught adjacent to the channel than anywhere else in O L DSA LT FISH I N G.O RG
65
local waters. From the Jaybird’s 51.1 -pounder back in 1995 (the biggest king ever caught in a local SKA tournament) to La Perla’s 44.6 pounder several Springs ago, the channel can produce a big-money monster at anytime. Where to fish in the channel is largely dependent on current conditions and personal preference. When there’s 10 acres of Spanish sardines between channel markers five and six and the Whistler, it’s hard to fish the 90 foot hole at the mouth of the bay. At the same time, when there’s tons of glass minnows getting worked hard by ladyfish and mackerel between Egmont Keycatch a smoker king on florida’s west coast and Port Manatee, you have to wonder how many big kingfish are swimming under the Skyway Bridge. The rule here is to be up to date on the bait situation and fish it accordingly. The Peaks This is an interesting area southwest of Pass-AGrille aptly named for it’s steep drop-offs. Twentyfoot roll-offs are common out here and the bait can get soupy around the structure. This one of those areas that can be fishless one day and turn on overnight and hold big fish for many days. A good area to fish when it gets a little rough. Beach Hard Bottom Areas Between Boca Grande Pass and Anclote Key are countless patches of live bottom in 12 to 25 feet of water. Some of the areas are full of small ledges and breaks while others are as flat as a pancake. Most are interspersed with “kingfish highways” or roll-offs where the sand meets the rock in a defined edge. Slow-trolling big live baits like mullet, ladyfish, mackerel, trout and shad through these areas can be deadly. Anchoring on an edge and chumming can also be productive. Historical hot (and sure to be crowded) spots include the Blind Pass Drop, Redington, Indian Rocks, Sand Key and Mandalay hard bottoms. Plenty of big kingfish are caught in these areas but the truth is, you are liable to catch a giant kingfish anywhere along the coast — from 50 yards to two miles from the beach. Find a strong presence of bait and clean water (look for that east wind) and a big fish bite isn’t far away. More and more anglers are figuring out that finding a solitary piece of bottom and fishing it hard can be much more productive than simply following the pack to last week’s dilly hole. The relatively untouched grounds north of Anclote Key have been especially productive in recent tournaments. 66
Fishing Hard Bottom/Bait Stacks Sometimes you’ll find them in the middle of nowhere. Sometimes they are associated with a wreck, artificial reef or giant natural ledge. Regardless, there will be a time when you enter a zone where as far as you can see are schools of bait on the surface. Perhaps they are Spanish sardines or Threadfin herring. Regardless, if they appear nervous or are visibly being worked, check it out. Jumping from bait pod to bait pod until you find the magical knot holding big kingfish has produced many money fish. Wrecks There’s something about a wreck that can attract and hold a large number of big kingfish. Maybe it’s the smorgasbord of forage available (from sardines to snapper) or the simple security of high relief. In any case, the Blackthorn/Sheridan, Tug & Barge, 10 Fathom, Betty Rose, Clearwater Wreck, the Gunsmoke, the Shrimp Barge and the Mexican Pride are all well-known wrecks that have all produced big kings in the past. Slowtrolling over the structure as well as working circles away from the numbers can be deadly. Anchoring up-tide and employing a chum slick can be productive but can bring you un-wanted attention as well. The frustration of wreck fishing ranges from dealing with amberjack that eat all your big runners to barracuda that eat all your big kingfish to divers and weekenders who could care less that you’re fishing for $100,000. On the other hand, I’ve seen too many money fish taken off of wrecks to overlook their potential. Keep in mind that when the wind and waves stir things up for a few days, the bait often flocks to the wrecks and artificial reefs. Artificial Reefs Fishing a wreck and an artificial reef are about the same. The only difference is that most artificial reefs are scattered over a fairly large area. Knowing where each and every piece of structure is on a given reef
can put you in front of kingfish that haven’t been worked by the pack. Spots like the Rube Allyn, the Indian Shores, the Tarpon Springs and all of the M reefs off Sarasota are unique but can be fished in similar styles. Map out the structure and work the water column hard with whatever bait is holding in the area. The Florida Middle Grounds* The new (old) Promised Land. Here’s a kingfish hole that has it all — giant natural peaks, plenty of old, hulking wrecks and a history of giant kingfish. Commercial rod and reelers and spear fishermen have been bringing home 40 to 60 pound “grounds kings” for many years. The prolific structure in the area is an obvious favorite hangout of the rogue smoker and hitting the right peak at the right time can pay off big. It’s at least a 68 mile run to the south end of the grounds and as much as 80 or 90 miles to some of the more productive areas. Pick your days for this trip or you’ll be miserable. Make the run with a group of boats to be safe. The biggest blue runners and small bonitos are top big kingfish baits but you may have a hard time keeping the amberjack off your hooks. The biggest king I’ve caught in the grounds (46 pounds) ate a live Key West grunt on a flatline. Shrimp Boats A lot of people do it but not many talk about the big kings they catch while blackfin tuna fishing behind an anchored-up shrimper. There’s just something about hundreds of pounds of dead fish being slopped out into a chum slick as the sun rises over the deep blue Gulf that appeals to a big kingfish. Not to mention to the blackfin tuna, cobia, sharks, barracuda, bonito and big jack crevalle. Find a concentration of culling shrimp boats and somewhere nearby is a 30 to 40 pound kingfish. A radar and the ability to run and gun at high speeds is necessary to effectively fish shrimpers as most ply random waters some 30 to 50 miles offshore. Any and all found on the hook are worth a slow-troll lap or two. Boca Grande Pass/Channel Deep water, steep ledges and strong current all combine to suck big kings in and out of the mouth of Charlotte Harbor. There’s enough hard bottom and structure around the pass andcatch a smoker king channel to hold large numbers of fish. When there’s big kings in the Pass it’s hard not to catch a 30-pounder.
Formulating Your Own Big Fish Philosophy There’s no doubt you could follow this story’s lead to catch a smoker king. It is an accurate historical marker regarding big fish of year’s past and a good place to start. But as with any sport, it is the innovators and teams not afraid to try something different that consistently do well on the kingfish circuit. It is the teams that aren’t afraid to fish outside the pack that put up big fish on a regular basis. The truth is, we are blessed with so much productive kingfish bottom between Boca Grande and Homosassa that one would be foolish to limit their monster hunting to these traditional hot spots. The fact is, you’ll see a lot of high 20 to mid-30 range fish caught out of packs and popular spots but more often than not, the winning fish, the 38 to 50-pound monsters, are solitary loners pulled from low-pressure areas. This is especially true in shallow hard bottom areas where an overabundance of boats can shut a big fish bite down much easier and faster than in deeper water. Hunting down your own spot where conditions are ideal is much more likely to produce a winner than trying to luck a winner out of the pack. At the same time, some of the best and most consistent big fish catchers I know fish the same areas religiously. Their philosophy is based more on perfecting a technique specific to a certain area or type of fishing and knowing when exactly to fish where. As a fulltime fishing guide, this is more in tune with my tournament plans. If you catch big kingfish on a regular basis, you know when and where they will bite. The gamble is that you’re going to catch the fish of a lifetime every weekend. Which is a whole lot easier when you know the right places to look for her. *Editors Note: The Florida Middle Grounds is every bit as great a Kingfish spot as Jon describes. It is also, outside of the 30 mile offshore boundary for both Old Salt – King of the Beach Kingfish tournaments. So, if you are fishing the King, you are not fishing the Middle Grounds….. #justsayin’ Tight lines, Captain!
