WHAT IF?

BY TEAM DON RAY GEAR

Two times a year our team rises early with big dreams and superstitions for the annual Spring and Fall King of the Beach.

Fishing the KOTB is always an opportunity to think “WHAT IF?” What if we get that lucky bite? What if we actually win? What if we make it up on stage? What if we get that crown? What if we get the cape? What if we get that check? This is what makes fishing KOTB so much fun. It is what has kept us coming back two times a year, every year, no matter what! We don’t miss those two weekends! This Spring, we were able to answer our “WHAT IF” questions. It was everything our team could imagine and more. Locals, looking to finally win the Largest Kingfish Tournament on our coast. With any team, we had to get extremely lucky. Each year you go to your “WHAT IF” location.

You sit in boredom and excitement all at the same time. Hoping, praying and wishing for that one bite to make all the difference. This Spring, our one bite came in the early afternoon. Fishing had been extremely slow. We waited hours with no action. Slowly bumping the engines in gear and out of gear. Waving at other boats doing the exact same as our team, hoping for that one bite. In the blink of an eye, all things change. The reel goes off! Excitement goes through the roof. The fight to get the fish to the boat begins. Usually, the fights are quick, and you are back to the normal mode of slow trolling. Fortunately for our team, this Spring was different. The fight went longer than usual, felt heavier than normal and got our “WHAT IF” brains thinking. “WHAT IF?” O L DSA LT FISH I N G.O RG

SINCE 1977

CALL FOR A BROUCHURE

After a while the doubts set in. Maybe a shark, maybe foul hooked, maybe an Amberjack, then back to “WHAT IF?” While we slowly and methodically worked the fish to the boat the excitement built. Trying to stay calm is the hardest part. As I was driving the boat working with my teammates, I started to think how fortunate to have an amazing team. We have thought about this moment for years. Each of our team members knows exactly what each other are doing. We have been fishing together for a number of years and have the ultimate trust in our roles on the team. Working on a team that is so obsessed and dedicated to the sport of Kingfishing is a lot of fun. Long nights, early mornings, and lots of time spent thinking “WHAT IF” together has allowed us to become great friends and truly enjoy what we do together. Without the skill, passion and roles each of us play on the team, we would have never answered our “WHAT IF” question. Spring of 2019 was our chance to answer the “WHAT IF” questions. Slowly the silver glimmer in the water gets closer. Taylor looks at us and says, “this is our whole kingfishing life right here guys, it is the one.” Deep breaths, slow movement and one stick of the gaff in just the right spot. A quick boat ride home. Calls to immediate friends and family. Calls to other competitors to hear the rumors and truths of what has been caught. Slowly reality starts setting in. We actually might win KOTB. To every team thinking about their “WHAT IF” questions as you read this story. Keep asking them. It’s worth the question. It is worth the wonder. It is worth the boredom. It is worth early mornings and late nights. It is worth fishing twice a year in the KOTB. Nothing will replace the feeling for our team on a special Spring day in 2019. All our “WHAT IF” questions were answered. Being on stage with the team was exciting. Hearing the crowd cheer and each of us taking our turns wearing the crown and cape felt incredible. The check is the icing on the cake. All the answers to the “WHAT IF” questions were more than we could have imagined. We will be back again this fall, hitting that reset button asking ourselves again: “WHAT IF?” We look forward to seeing everyone again at the Fall King of the Beach. Thank you to our team sponsors: Sea Vee Boats, Mercury Marine, Simrad Yachting, Wet Sounds, Single Source Insurance, Bucket Innovations, Don Ray Gear and our family and friends. All of who make our obsession a reality.

The majority of Mutt’s influences derive from absurd circumstances in street culture, his life as an ardent angler and a kitschy Floridian. As a native of Florida, Mutt cut his teeth and got his nickname by tagging the Tampa Bay and Miami areas as a graffiti artist in the late 80’s. In the early 90’s he, his brother and his friends created Stiff Pole Records, which he directed all of the artwork that the company produced for the punk rock music scene in Florida. As a graphic/commercial artist, Mutt created layouts, album covers, T-shirts and comic strips for numerous underground magazines all while painting and fabricating sculptures for galleries around the New Orleans, Miami and Tampa Bay markets. In 2004, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of South Florida and won the prestigious “Cube” award from the Contemporary Art Museum for his work. In 2008, he and his brothers acquired the underground “Spillhouse Gallery” as an alternative gallery space for local and emerging artists. Giving back to the community, Mutt is also involved in the international “Free Art Friday” movement, getting art outside of the gallery and giving it freely to lovers of his style. His work has sold in galleries and back alleys across America, and some of his works are part of major collections, including the McGee collection in Tampa. Today, he teaches art and works as a fine artist in Pinellas County. A NOTE FROM MUTT As a kid, my father’s father took him to a long forgotton fishing pier in Miami. He looked around and said “This is it.” Granted, the story is a helluvalot more powerful and sentimental when he tells it, but I can’t get away from it. I was raised on the water and grew up with the sand between my toes. I have a deep respect and admiration for all of the splendor around me. Call me lucky, I’m a Florida native and damn proud of it. I believe there’s something special about where I was born and raised. I love it, and I do sincerly hope I can bring a bit of the Florida appeal to you in my art.

No matter if you are here for a day, weekend, week, or longer, we have an exceptional experience in store for you! Gulf breezes, crimson sunsets, and a relaxed vibe help to create lifelong memories. From historic John’s Pass Village, where fantastic shopping, dining, and nightlife await, to our pristine 2-mile long stretch of sand, Madeira Beach is the perfect escape from, well, everything! Fishing is not just a sport or pastime in Madeira Beach. Our community was founded on it. Today, you can still watch the commercial fishing vessels come into John’s Pass Village to unload the fresh catch of the day. Around here, it’s been that way for as long as anyone can remember. If you are a competitor in King of the Beach, we wish you the best of luck! If you are a spectator, you are in for a treat. Some of the best fishing teams from around the southeast come to Madeira Beach to compete. While you wait for your favorite team to return with their catch, be sure to schedule a time to visit our pristine white sand beach. You’ll want to enjoy it like a local by kicking back in a beach lounge chair under a cabana, just enjoying the view.!

KING MACKEREL SCOMBEROMORUS CAVALLA REGULATIONS FOR THE GULF STATE WATERS MINIMUM SIZE LIMIT: 24 fork length DAILY BAG LIMIT: 2 per harvester per day LEGAL GEAR: hook and line and spearing only HABITAT AND FISHING TIPS: King mackerel are found in both nearshore and offshore waters throughout Florida, often near schools of baitfish. Like many of the pelagic species, kings prefer water temperatures above 68 degrees, so they migrate to warmer waters in the fall of the year. Kings feed primarily on schooling bait fish and squid and are commonly caught while trolling with flashy spoons or duster rigged with a whole cigar minnow. Free lining or slow trolling with live baits (cigar minnows, herring, sardines, blue runners) is a great way to hook the larger and more solitary kings. Free lining a live squid at night, especially over reefs that hold baitfish, can also be very effective. Tackle requirements depend on the size of fish and the method of fishing. Spinning or bait-casting tackle with 20 to 30 pound monofilament line is sufficient when free lining live baits as long as you have enough spool capacity for the initial run after hookup. While kingfish do not have great endurance, they are very fast and will commonly take 100 to 200 yards of line off the reel in the first 30 seconds of the fight. For trolling, 30 to 50 pound trolling tackle is commonly used. Kings have very sharp teeth requiring the use of wire or very heavy monofilament leader. SPANISH MACKEREL SCOMBEROMORUS MACULATUS REGULATIONS FOR THE GULF STATE WATERS Minimum Size Limit: 12” fork length Daily Bag Limit: 15 per harvester per day LEGAL GEAR: beach or haul seine, cast net, hook and line, spear HABITAT AND FISHING TIPS: Spanish mackerel are a pelagic, fast swimming fish that are prevalent throughout Florida’s coastal waters when water temperatures exceed 70 degrees. To remain in warm water, Spanish mackerel migrate out of the northern parts of the state in the fall of the year and return in April with the warming waters. They are frequently found in shallow, clear water over grass beds and along sandy beaches where they feed on schools of baitfish. Spanish mackerel are aggressive feeders that will strike a wide variety of natural and artificial baits, so they can be very easy to catch. Many anglers identify the location of Spanish mackerel by trolling or watching for birds diving on schools of baitfish, which often indicates that mackerel are forcing the bait to the surface. Angling techniques include trolling or casting with small shiny spoons, dusters or jigs. Light spinning or bait-casting tackle with 10 to 15 pound monofilament line is adequate; however, 30 to 60 pound monofilament leader is required due to the mackerel’s razor sharp teeth. KING FISHING

& LIVE BAIT WHICH ONES TO USE?

Here are the common go-to baits for locals in and around Tampabay. The baits we use are strongly determined by weather and temperatures. Here are a few tried and true. Check with our numerous bait shops for what is hot the week of the King. Hot Inshore baits: Hook-n-line caught Ladyfish, Silver Mullet and Shad (cast net). Near Shore wrecks: Always a must, Blue Runners (BIG as possible), Ladyfish and Cigar Minnows. These are caught on flats, passes, bridges and rock ledges. 56

SHADS/POGIES A popular kingfish bait due to their wide availability - in huge numbers.

BLUE RUNNERS Arguably the most

popular king mackerel bait of all, very hardy and found just about everywhere.

LADYFISH Inshore fish, found in bays and estuaries. Often found in large schools. Mainly caught hook-n-line.

PILCHARDS (SCALED SARDINE) A common bait found in large schools, pilchards make great hook baits or live chum. Cathch them with cast nets or sabikis.

SILVER MULLETS Perhaps the most common baitfish of all, mullet are easy to net and found in many different locales.

BLUEFISH Found nearshore in the fall and travel in large schools. The typical size for the gulf is up to 3lbs.

THREADFISH HERRING These fragile baitfish are nevertheless one of the most sought-after baits for a variety of species, including kingfish.

CIGAR MINNOWS (ROUND SCAD) Another hardy bait found in large schools, caught on sabikis.

KOREAN GRILLED

MACKEREL From:

Magazine, July/August 2010

Oily fish, such as mackerel, are strong-flavored and pair well with boldly seasoned glazes made from gochujang chile paste. The red, rich paste is so common in Korea that it is sold in virtually every supermarket in plastic containers ranging in size from about 2 cups to about 2 quarts. Normally the main ingredients are fermented soybeans ground with red chiles and powdered rice, plus a little salt and sweetener. INGREDIENTS: • 2 tablespoons Korean chile paste (See Notes) • 1 tablespoon canola oil • 1 tablespoon reduced-sodium soy sauce • 2 teaspoons rice vinegar • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger • 2 whole Mackerel (about 1½ pounds each) Cleaned and butterflied with tails left on (See Notes)

PREPARATION: 1

Whisk chile paste, oil, soy sauce, vinegar and ginger in a small bowl until smooth. Transfer 2 tablespoons marinade to a small bowl and set aside.

2

Open each fish like a book, exposing the flesh. Place in a large pan or on a baking sheet and spread the remaining marinade over the flesh. Marinate in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to 1 hour.

3 4

About 20 minutes before you’re ready to grill, preheat grill to high or prepare a charcoal fire. Brush the grill rack clean and oil it well (see Tip). Grill the fish, flesh-side down, for 3 minutes. Flip with a large spatula, spread the reserved marinade over the fish and grill until opaque in the center, 3 to 4 minutes more. Cook Time: 1 hour

Notes: Both wild-caught mackerel from the Atlantic and farmed rainbow trout from the U.S. are considered best choices for the environment, according to seafoodwatch.org. For this recipe, you’ll need whole mackerel (or rainbow trout) that has been cleaned, butterflied and the heads removed (tails left on). Availability of whole mackerel (or trout) varies, but most fish markets or fish departments at large supermarkets can order and clean the fish for you. Call ahead to make sure you get what you’re looking for. Korean chile paste (also called hot pepper paste, gochujang or kochujang) is a fermented spicy condiment made from red chiles, soybeans and salt. Find it in Korean or Asian markets or online from koamart.com. Annie Chun, a widely distributed national brand of Asian foods, has recently launched their own bottled gochujang sauce that is becoming increasingly available in large supermarkets. It keeps indefinitely in the refrigerator. To make a substitute for Korean chile paste, combine 2 tablespoons white miso, 2 tablespoons Asian-style chile sauce, such as sriracha, and 2 teaspoons molasses. Tip: To oil a grill rack, oil a folded paper towel, hold it with tongs and rub it over the rack. (Do not use cooking spray on a hot grill.) Fish on foil: Fish that flakes easily requires a delicate touch to flip on the grill. If you want to skip turning it over when grilling, measure a piece of foil large enough to hold the fish and coat it with cooking spray. Grill the fish on the foil (without turning) until it flakes easily and reaches an internal temperature of 145°F. People with celiac disease or gluten-sensitivity should use soy sauces that are labeled “gluten-free,” as soy sauce may contain wheat or other gluten-containing sweeteners and flavors. KING FISHING IN TAMPA BAY Fishing Report By: Captain Travis Yaeckel

With King of The Beach Fishing Tournament around the corner, it seems only fitting to tailor this article to Kingfishing in Tampa Bay. As of late, the Fall run of these Pelagics is in full force. Reports of jumbo Kings are coming in daily – in and around the bay. When it comes to Kingfishing in Tampa Bay, there are several areas to target and fishing techniques to be used. I’m certainly no expert Kingfish angler and this topic would be more like an encyclopedia volume, rather than an article to try to cover it all. However, I do know enough to be dangerous so I’ll share a few things that work for me and may bring you success in Tampa Bay. Let’s talk about a couple areas first and we’ll start where the greater abundance of fish is. The beach. From Holmes Beach to John’s Pass, there has been a lot of activity inside 7 miles. This is where you will find larger aggregations of migratory fish. Any shallow public or private wrecks, rock piles, and ledges are good areas to begin your search. There’s a lot of water to cover. Having a solid starting point is key, but don’t be afraid to burn some fuel looking for action. On the other 66

hand, if you plan on fishing the bay you still have a shot and will save a few bucks on the fuel bill. All of the estuary’s deep flow points will attract big Kingfish. Bean Point (Passage Key Inlet), Southwest Channel, Egmont Channel, and Skyway Channel serve as the arteries to the bay. These areas act as the highway for bait and game fish moving and/or staging in the bay. Moving further up the bay, we have the Skyway Bridge. Hands down one of the local favorites for catching the Fall run of Kingfish. Traditionally, focusing on sections closer to the main shipping channel or deeper ends of the North and South fishing pier will yield better results. From there, we start to move into my wheelhouse. Inside the bridge – an area that will certainly hold less “smokers” but nothing to scratch off the list. Here you will want to focus on the main shipping channel. Closer to the bridge, from “A” to “B” cut is normally productive, but areas as far up as “G” and “F” cut have been known to hold monsters. If you’re in the area, don’t forget to check the Port Manatee and Bahia Beach Reefs. Some of our biggest fish have come from these popular locations.

No matter where you plan to go or your adventure takes you, find and follow the bait. That’s what the fish are doing. Also, water temps around 70 deg seem to be the target. On the way, keep your eyes peeled for ANY bait or predator activity. Birds are the obvious, but one of my favorites is finding Spanish Mackerel. It’s almost a sure bet that a big King is lurking around. So, let’s cover a few ways to get them in the boat. For me, there are two basic techniques. Still fishing with live bait or trolling. Personally, I tend to lean more towards working an area on anchor using live bait. The larger the bait, the better. Having a few dozen hand-sized Pilchards, Threadfin Herring, Blue Runners, or Cigar Minnows will set you up just right. The kicker is having a livewell full of smaller baits (Pilchards or Cigar Minnows Preferred) to chum, if possible. Regardless of the bait, my go-to rig is a “stinger”. Whether you purchase them pre-made or make them your self – it’s a proven setup for catching Kingfish. There are several variations but when I make mine, they are 6-8” long of 40lb wire finished on each end with a simple haywire twist. The forward hook being a No. 2-3 live bait hook and the rear being a No. 4-6 treble. To rig it, the forward hook will be inserted through the bait’s nostril and the rear hook positioned in it’s back. One of the main reasons this rig is so effective is Kings are known for cutting baits in half and not getting a hook due to their aggressive nature. Using a rig like this will definitely increase your hook up ratio once a fish commits to your bait. From the “stinger” rig, we move up to the business end. This is usually 3-4 ft of 40-60lb fluorocarbon leader attached to 40lb braid. These days, I am using an 8 ft medium heavy – fast action Bull Bay Rod paired with an 8,000 – 10,000 series Shimano spinning reel. One of my favorite reels for “flat lining” for Kings is the Shimano Baitrunner. I have several. This gives you the ability to have 2 drag settings and quickly switch between them – by retrieving or manually flipping the trigger. Often times, fish are broken off when they strike the bait due to the intensity of the bite. The lighter drag setting of the Baitrunner can sometimes keep a fish on during the initial hook-up (Jump / Sky Rocket) before they turn on the after-burners and you can get into the main drag settings to fight the fish. More often than not, I like to “free line” my baits and I normally have them set back around 30 yds or so but sometimes adding a float to keep the baits suspended in the water column can make a difference. If I am chumming and I can visually see Kingfish feeding, we will pitch baits in those areas – often followed

by a strike. One thing you might notice is you start catching smaller Spanish Mackerel in your chum. That’s not always a bad thing, especially the further up in the bay. Keep setting your larger baits back further and further and keep the Spanish entertained on lighter tackle closer to the boat. It’s likely the big King will come around to see what all the commotion is about. If you are not a bait guy or can’t find the bite – cover ground. When you are kingfishing in Tampa Bay, trolling is an extremely popular and effective method for getting on the meat. It’s a perfect way to prospect an area or quickly get hooks to fish found on the run. There’s a host of methods and rigs to get it done (planers, down-riggers, slow trolling live baits…) but for me, I like trolling lipped plugs. With today’s technology, lure manufactures have come a long way and it is mind blowing what’s available on the market for trolling plug designs. One of my favorites is the Rapala X Rap 20 in the Mackerel pattern. I like running 2 rods and I use the equipment setup as the live bait with the exception of switching the leader to 60 lb and increasing the length to 6-8 ft. I’ve found that I am generally around 4-5 knots but that will vary depending on several factors (tide-current, direction, wind, waves…). Don’t be afraid to speed up a little, they will strike a fast-moving bait! Once you are hooked up, don’t stop! You can slow down a bit, but keep the boat in gear and moving to stay tight on the fish and potentially hook up on any other fish on your secondary rod. If you think you have the monster, go ahead and clear all your lines – but always keep a pitch bait handy. Finally, don’t forget your gaff! You have spent a lot of time preparing, hoping, and praying to catch the winner. Make sure the deck is clear to bring the toothy critter on board and take your time to get a good shot on the fish. This is especially important if you are not using wire. One wrong turn of the rod or the fish could end up with your trophy catch having the last laugh – and swimming away.
