Letter from the Editor

Wow! Like Beverly Hills?!? I knew that Anaverde Hills was quite a special place with its well-manicured rolling hills, Christmas tree-lined roads that welcome you into the neighborhood and homes that fill the space with hues of sandy brown and earth tones, and litter free. Not to mention the banner flags that are interchangeable according to the seasons and perfectly lined with each light pole … but Beverly Hills? After that encounter, I walked away with a sense of pride. Anaverde is my Beverly Hills. Surely, if Beverly Hills has a magazine, then Anaverde will have its own luxe magazine with a twist, too. That’s not as easy as it sounds but you know what I mean. Just as I walked away with a sense of accomplishment and pride that Tuesday afternoon, I want you to experience those same feelings as you witness the makings of a community tradition, Anaverde Magazine. This is your magazine and I want to hear from you! I want your productive input.

H

Feel free to submit a story idea, cool photos that you captured of the community, and ask questions about the magazine, events, life advice, etc.

ello there!

Anaverde Magazine has been a brainchild of mine for four years now. When I became a new homeowner in this beautiful neighborhood, I immediately knew that I wanted to do something tremendously special. It was as if I was being called to serve in a way that would impact both my life and my community..

This month, we invite you to Create a Life That You Love. Whether it’s learning to say no to the things that no longer serve you or saying yes to pursuing that dream of starting your own business, we got you! I hope that you enjoy the features that we’ve chosen to present to you this month. We are eager to get to know you and to serve you. Welcome to Anaverde Magazine! You Can Have It All,

He smiled and said, “Absolutely! Don’t worry; if you ever have extra boxes, do your best to fold them and put them into the bin for pickup. We typically don’t leave behind boxes that you put out. This place is like Beverly Hills. We like to keep it neat, you know.” This statement caught me off-guard. It was not what I expected to hear. His simple reassurance opened my eyes to a whole new realization.

Then it happened. One Tuesday afternoon, which everyone knows is trash pickup day here in Anaverde, I eagerly waited outside for the recycling truck to make its stop in front of my home. When the truck finally arrived, a little after two o’clock, I waved at the driver and motioned for him to roll down his window. Once he did, I asked if he could empty my bin then allow me to put the extra box that I had on the curb in the truck also?

A Look at These Trader Joe’s

Spa Inspired Finds

Grapefruit & Lemon Hand Sanitizer

B

efore the COVID-19 pandemic, I was already head over heels for a great hand sanitizer. While many stores were low on supply for this quick fix of cleanliness, I was surprised to find this cobalt blue mini sized spray on the shelf at Trader Joe’s. I first spotted the supply right in the beauty aisle during my weekly Trader Joe’s run. The terms grapefruit and lemon speak for themselves. That is exactly what the mist of spray smells like. Not too overbearing but definitely a spritz of fresh air. I must admit, you may be tempted to overspray this lightweight sanitizer thinking that it will get your hands thoroughly clean but don’t. You just gotta trust the process. Just spritz each hand and go. No muss. No fuss.

Nourish All-In-One Facial Cleanser

he sister to the all-in-one facial cleanser. This scent free formula is just right for someone needing a little moisture without overdoing it. I recommend using this moisturizer in tandem with the cleanser. I couldn’t imagine using the moisturizer solo but that’s your call. Again, this product is perfect if you are looking for a simple way to moisturize your face without the heavy oil. This may even be perfect if you have light to moderate acne and need a moisturizer that gets the job done less the heavy fragrance.

5

Spa Face Wash With Tea Tree Oil

A

hhh the amazing scent transports you to your favorite spa right in the comfort of your home. The rich lather and refreshing scent takes self care to a whole new level. Beware, the tea tree oil seems to zap out your natural oil so you’ll want to have a nice face moisturizer or vitamin c serum on hand to replenish the skin. This spa wash is fun to use but will leave your skin feeling high and dry.

Blueberry & Acai Facial Scrub

L

2

et me just say, I’m in love! I discovered this fruit smoothie treasure on my own. Yes, I saw this little jar on the shelf and when I read blueberry and acai, I wanted to know more immediately! I grabbed it and couldn’t wait to experience this goodness. Yes, it is goodness in a jar. It is a good idea to gently cleanse your face first, then indulge in this aromatic facial spa. Smells so good, you’ll want to eat it but it tastes salty so don’t. Gently massage the facial scrub, then leave it on for a few minutes or however long you’d like, then rinse. Your skin will feel instant rejuvenation and you’ll witness a natural glow. Trader Joe’s really outdid themselves with this one!

4

Nourish All-In-One Facial Moisturizer

S

imple, clean and to the point. That’s the only way to describe this all-in-one cleanser, packed with antioxidants. Full disclosure, if you suffer from moderate to heavy acne, I do not recommend. This is not an acne fighting formula but it is perfect if you are in need of a light wash that won’t overdry your skin or burn your eyes. The Editor’s Picks are not a paid advertisement. Letters to the Editor Editor Dear Sarah, First, thank you for sharing your excitement about the new magazine. We are pretty excited to have this opportunity to serve the community in this way :)

Being Friends with the Neighbors Hi Avanerde Magazine! I hope that you will pick my question. I’m new to the Anaverde community. I’ve been here for a little over three years now. I must say, it is cool that we have our own magazine. To say that my community has its own magazine is pretty awesome so thank you. That’s not what this letter is about. I am writing because as I mentioned, I moved here about three years ago. It is me and my husband, we love our home but we don’t really have any friends here. I think that I’m a pretty friendly person but you wouldn’t know it since the neighbors and I don’t really talk. I would like more friends in the community but I’m not sure where to start or how to make that happen? Do you have any suggestions? Feeling friendless in Anaverde, Sarah

16

Secondly, welcome to the neighborhood! I know that it can feel a little lonely when you move to a new area, especially if you moved from an area that was farther away. The good news is Anaverde Hills does offer quite a few social engagements for the community through the planning committee of the Homeowner’s Association (HOA). We haven’t been able to socialize since the COVID-19 pandemic but before that, there seemed to always be something on the calendar. I would suggest starting there, once we are cleared to socialize. You didn’t mention whether you attend the HOA meetings or not but those are also great opportunities to meet people from the community. The HOA meetings are being held via Zoom right now and I suggest that you attend the next meeting so that you can get to know your neighbors who are near and far. Just like the dating world, it might be a challenge to meet people with the social distancing orders and everything being halted. Get creative, start by waving to your neighbors when you see them. Better yet, don’t be shy, go and introduce yourself, if you haven’t already. The beauty in relationships is that if you genuinely connect with a neighbor then the relationship will blossom organically. You won’t have to force the connection. Keep putting yourself out there until you find what you are looking for.

Bringing Up Teenage Stepkids Dear Anaverde Magazine, I’ve been married for six years. I have a four-year-old with my husband and I co-parent a 13 and a 15-year-old from my husband’s previous marriage. I love being a new mom and being a step-mom to my husband’s kids. I feel that my husband is allowing his ex wife to cause problems in our home. His kids agreed to come live with us while his ex wife focuses on getting her life together. The teenagers have lived with us for two months but it hasn’t been easy. They don’t listen to me and always go to their dad whenever I ask them to clean up their space like make the bed or wash their clothes. This makes me feel like an outsider in my own home. My husband said that he will talk to them but nothing changes. It may be just me but it seems like after every phone call with their mom, they have an attitude with me. I think that she is up to something. I don’t have a relationship with her so I will never know. What should I do about this situation? Feeling disrespected by my stepkids, Alexa Dear Alexa, Wow! Thanks for sharing your story. I want to commend you for taking on this role. I can sense from your letter that you truly want to be a good bonus mom to your two teenage children. Blended families are not always easy. I am only sharing advice based on what I would do if I were in this situation or what I have witnessed through other blended family experiences

that have been shared with me. To keep my thoughts crystal clear, I am going to list the steps that I recommend. After reading this list, listen to your heart and do what feels right for you and your family. Here are my suggestions: 1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

6.

7.

Find some time away from the home, maybe go to the park with your husband and share your concerns. Have this conversation privately. Just share how you feel. Don’t expect your husband to take sides. That is not what this is about. You simply want order and respect. Make sure that you and your husband are on one accord about the chores that are expected of the teens. Talk to your husband about being the enforcer of these expectations so that you don’t appear to be the “evil” stepmother. Find a time for you and your husband to have a nice sit down with the teens. No accusing or insulting, just simply going over expectations while living in your home. Children unconsciously love boundaries so set them. Talk to them about them and inform them about what happens if they don’t abide by them. Don’t worry about how they act when they get off of the phone with their mother. They are children, they don’t know any better. You are an adult, fully developed. Ignore their attitude and send them love, even the mother.

I could add another 20 or so tips to this list but I will stop at seven. These are all things that you most likely already know. You just needed me to remind you. Also, see a therapist to nourish your sanity. Having a solid person to just talk to can do wonders for you and give you the peace of mind that you want.

The Yard Filled with Weeds Next Door Dear Anaverde Magazine, As you may already know, we have a code here in Anaverde that clearly states that our yards are not to be infested with weeds. For some reason, my next door neighbor refuses to tend to their yard. It is such a bad look. I have called the HOA and complained. They assured me that they have sent letters asking my neighbor to clean up the yard. It seems to be getting worse. I believe that they are just ignoring the letters and possible fines. I really wish that they would take pride in their home and keep the yard looking nice. I do not like looking at that mess. How would you handle this situation with a neighbor if it were you?

responsibility every month. Just tend to your yard and lead by example. Try not to have an attitude with the neighbors. When you see them, smile and say hello. Whatever you do, don’t try to “fix” the situation. We must remember that we live in this development and there are pros and cons to this living situation. Make sure that your yard is nice and clean. If it bothers you to look over at your neighbor’s house, then don’t look over there. Put your focus someplace else. My guess is that after a while, if they see that your yard is always nicely put together, it will encourage them to put more effort into sprucing up their space. That is my hope.

I wish to remain anonymous. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Dear Anonymous, I receive quite a few letters dealing with neighbor issues. The challenge is that manypeople forget that this is a community. All of us working together as a whole, makes Anaverde one awesome place to live. I get that not everyone is going to be on the bandwagon and we just have to let them do what they do. Similar to my previous response, just let it go. You did your part by reporting this issue to the Homeowners Association (HOA) and that is all that you can do. However, you could offer to clean up the weeds for them, but then that would get weird. You don’t want to be stuck with this

Family Teach Your Children How to Have a

Healthy Relationship Words by Lori Bregman

W

hen I first saw this quote I can’t even begin to tell you how many things went through my head and rang true for me on so many different levels. Children see and pick up on EVERYTHING. We often don’t give them enough credit for the things they are aware of. Your relationship with your spouse is setting the bar for them to follow. If you are in a toxic or unhealthy relationship you are showing them that this is OK. If you and your spouse treat each other with love and respect, you

18

are blazing a trail for them on how to be treated and how to treat others this way. If it is OK for my mom or dad to be treated this way then why shouldn’t it be OK for me? Just a little something to think about. We are the most open and sensitive

to energy when we are children. Even though you might not always be fighting, children can feel your energy. They can sense when something is right or wrong. The bond between a mother and a child runs deep. My mother always told me that when I was little, I always seemed to know more

than I should have. I would say things to her that I picked up on that she could not believe that I saw or felt. I am no different than the children that I see and work with every day. I once worked with a client, who had three sons. The couple were having marital problems and later divorced. The husband was verbally abusive, disrespectful and cheating on her. She was always in a state of constant fear and anxiety. Feeling her anxiety (because children feel everything) the boys started acting out. Months later, they started treating her the same way her husband was treating her. There was another case years ago, when I was working with someone who was telling me about her husband and how toxic and stressed out his energy was. He would walk in the door each night with a black cloud above his head and then take out all of his stress on his spouse. She would get upset and either lash out or hold it in while fuming inside. I remember seeing a vision of her baby playing on the ground getting energetically hit between the toxic energy that was emanating out of the

two of them. Without even knowing what was happening, the energetic foundation for relating was beginning to form in this child.Years later, this child is demonstrating similar behavioral problems.

“The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.” ~Rev. Theodore Hesburgh

It is a fact that everyday will not be perfect, even the very best of relationships have their ups and downs. It is important to monitor the negative energy and whether it is the constant state and pace of the overall theme of the relationship. Similar to the 80/20 rule: It is what you do 80% of the time that makes a difference and has an impact.

Personally, I am grateful to have many couples, who are positive role models. These couples demonstrate what a healthy and happy relationship is and I can clearly see how their children thrive from it. I asked the couples I admire and respect what is the formula to having a balanced relationship? Here are the three things that they shared: 1. We want each other to be happy and we do what we each can do to make this happen. 2. We have a deep love and respect for one another. 3. We are supportive of one another. It is so simple, yet VERY effective! As the parents, it is good to strive for a happy home. Children, who live in a balanced home tend to feel more secure and empowered. As their parents, you set the tone for what they will look for once they begin dating or seeking a significant other. Let’s make being in happy and respectful relationships a normal way of life.

I concocted three tiers of smartphone repossession, which I learned to communicate non-verbally so I could mete them out when I was on the phone, driving, or working at my computer: Parent Holds Up One Finger = one hour Parent Holds Up Two Fingers = the rest of the day Parent Holds Up Three Fingers = 24 hours I was cold-hearted in the face of defiant back talk. My daughter quickly understood the system. I never once relented after making the threat to confiscate her iPhone. That girl could beg, scream and cry like nobody’s business. But I learned to harden my heart – for her sake, of course. Which is why the punishment worked. Surprising to me, one of the biggest problems with ending back talk can be incidental family members. My other children were not allies in my punishment scheme. They tortured their sister by dangling their own phones in her face. They also argued

with me that whatever they had done was nowhere near as awful as what she had done so their punishment had to be lesser. Ditto for my husband. He was at the office or on business trips for most of her daily/hourly tantrum-y back talk sessions so for years he thought I was the crazy one, not her. He was constitutionally incapable of disciplining our daughter. In fact, he couldn’t even uphold my punishments. So I had to get creative about where I hid her verboten iPhone – from him. Otherwise he would give it back to her. I forgave him, because he had grown up without siblings, a kind of lala childhood that meant he didn’t understand family dynamics, poor thing. Here is my back talk advice: first, find an effective punishment. But equally important is recognizing it is not just about punishing the sassy mouth. You have to survey the family terrain first and look for landmines. Question whether you can count on your spouse or other family members to

help enforce whatever utterly brilliant and effective punishment you invent. In sum: think long and hard before you settle on a punishment that will be effective and make sure it is one that you alone can control. Back talk can be cured. My daughter is now a lovely, well-behaved, polite and mature 16-year-old angel who is a constant source of joy and delight – particularly because these days she lives 90 miles away at boarding school and it is hard for her to spout off from so far away. The best news for those of you struggling, as almost all parents do, with back talk: one day when they are teenagers, those same kids who drive you whack-job crazy now with their obnoxious, incessant, mind-bending back talk abilitie s , may not talk to you at all. Special thanks to my Harvard ’87 classmate — New York comedian, author and stressed-out mom Karen Bergreen for contributing to this topic.

The Complete

Family Emergency Kit Checklist Words by Diane Vukovic by Diane Vukovic

I

know that it’s hard to think about all the disasters which could happen: power outages, snow storms, fires, flooding, earthquakes…. But, if there is anything we can learn from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is that disasters can happen to anyone, anytime. Instead of getting stressed by dwelling on all the possible disasters, it’s better to get prepared. Preparedness is actually amazing for your mental health as it gives you a great sense of calm and the satisfaction of being selfreliant. As a first step in getting prepared, you’ll want to make a

22

family emergency kit. The following checklist covers all of your basic needs across multiple types of disasters.

Basic Supplies • • • • • •

Emergency food: At least two weeks’ worth of nonperishable food Water: 1 gallon of water per day/per person Emergency stove and fuel: Such as a small propane stove Emergency heater and fuel Sleeping bags and/or blankets: Including a warm baby sleeping bag for winter power outages Emergency lighting: Such as flashlights, headlamps,

• • • • • • • •

lamps, and candles Spare batteries: Try to have 10 backup batteries per device NOAA emergency radio Fire-starting kit: Such as lighters, waterproof matches and tinder Cash in small bills Pet supplies: Including food, water, leashes, crates, litter, and other supplies Copies of important documents: Preferably organized in a binder “Go Bag”: This will contain essential survival items in case you need to evacuate your home quickly Entertainment and comfort items: A good book, a deck of cards, or other activities which don’t require electricity

Hygiene and Health Items • • • • • • • • • •

Emergency toilet: Such as buckets and trash bags; let’s hope you never have to use it! Buckets: These have lots of emergency uses, like for making a hand-washing station Trash bags Hand sanitizer Toilet paper Menstrual items First aid kit and personal medications Unscented chlorine bleach Antibacterial soap Everyday items: Such as extra toothpaste, shampoo, dish detergent, etc.

• • • • • • • •

Waterproof gear including boots Rope and cordage Ax and/or saw Duct tape Broom, dustpan and cleaning supplies Fire extinguisher Carbon monoxide detector Ladder

Infant and Children Items • • • • • • • • • •

Disposable diapers Baby wipes Diaper and rash cream Cloth diapers and covers Infant formula Pre-sterilized bottles and/or disposable inserts Extra bottled water Bottle sterilizing tablets Baby food in pouches Toys and comfort items

Note that the Red Cross, FEMA, and other disaster organizations now recommend having at least 2 weeks’ worth of supplies at home. However, some disasters can end up lasting much longer than this. That’s why I recommend having at least one month’s worth of supplies and ideally even more. Yes, it can seem overwhelming at first but just go slowly. Start with the most important and easiest items (like water, food, and hand sanitizer) and then build up from there.

Home Cleanup and Safety Supplies • • • • • •

Plywood and plastic sheeting: For fixing damaged windows, doors, etc. Hardware, tools, shovel, and utility shutoff wrench Heavy-duty trash bags N95 respirator mask and eye protection Work gloves Sturdy boots

The T-Shirt Bra

It’s designed to provide a smooth look under t-shirts. This is the most popular style.

The Strapless Bra

This bra allows you to wear any strapless/revealing tops without losing all the support of a bra with a strap, but more support than a bandeau. However, if active, this type of bra may be inclined to slip. Beware of any potential wardrobe malfunctions.

The Backless Bra

This bra is perfect for any backless or low back tops/dresses. They tend to be adhesive in order to avoid having a band. Unfortunately, the adhesive may wear off after several wears.

The Racerback Bra

Designed with a T-strap in the back allows you to wear any racerback top or is perfect if you just prefer more movement in your back and shoulders without bra strap slippage. However, since there is more pressure on your shoulders, you can experience more neck pain and shoulder pain when wearing this style of bra.

The Sports Bra

The Sports Bra

Made to give your bust support while exercising without being uncomfortable. They vary in support levels so you can find the best fit for whatever activity. One con, they can be difficult to remove. This is definitely a great example of finding the perfect fit so you don’t have to wrestle with your bra.

The Push-Up Bra

This bra helps to improve the look of your cleavage by having pads inserted into strategic areas of the cup. They come in various degrees of padding so you can achieve an extreme amount of push-up or a natural looking cleavage. As an added plus, most padding can also be removed if you desire a less extreme look during the day and then reinserted for an evening look

The Bralette

Ahh, the comfort of it all. This bra is perfect for you if you like to sleep in a bra. While some women prefer to sleep in a bra for extra support, an actual bra is not always comfortable to sleep in. Treat yourself to a bralette bra. It is lightweight, seamless and offers just the right

amount of support under your tank top or pjs and will not have you bouncing around and feeling unsupported. The bralette is not recommended if you are more top heavy.

The Nursing Bra

Made to give you as much support as possible during the late stage of pregnancy and postpartum. As a nursing mom, it is a good idea to invest in a few good nursing bras. This type of support comes in handy when you are tackling nursing your little one and wanting comfort all in one. You may find that you will need varying cup sizes through your different nursing stages so be prepared to buy more than one.

The Full Cup Bra

This bra is designed to cover the entire breast for lots of support. The great thing about this bra is that it makes your chest seem fuller without having to worry about any sagging. It is ideal for women with larger busts, who are experiencing back pain. The full cup bra is perfect for relieving some pressure off your back when it is properly fitted.

Let’s Talk About

Eyebrow and Eyelash Hair Loss

Words by Candace Webb

Y

our eyelashes and eyebrows frame your eyes. When they become sparse, or you suddenly lose them altogether, it can be very stressful. Several underlying factors contribute to eyelash and eyebrow hair loss including medical conditions, stress and lack of proper nutrition. Knowing the causes and treatments will help keep you from panicking if it happens to you. Significance Losing eyebrow and eyelash hair does more than give you a look you would rather not wear. It also removes some of the eye protection you were born with. Eyelashes help prevent dust or other particles from falling into your eyes and causing pain or damage. Eyebrows can prevent water or other liquids such as hair dye from sliding down your forehead and into your eyes. Aside from the protection they offer, losing eyebrows or eyelashes gives your face an unfinished appearance that can be less attractive than you would like. Finally, the loss of eyelashes and eyebrows can signal a medical condition ranging from mild to serious in nature. Skin Problems Inflammation of the skin near the eyes may cause the loss of your eyelashes or eyebrows, according to Dermadoc.

26

com. Conditions such as Psoriasis, Eczema and Contact Dermatitis cause skin to blister, scale or peel, as well as causing itching that can become severe. Scratching the skin to relieve the itching harms the already inflamed skin and causes the hair to fall out. Systemic Problems Women who have autoimmune disorders such as Lupus, sometimes lose patches of their eyelashes or eyebrow hair. The condition Alopecia Areata’s hallmark trait is the destruction of all hair including facial hair, leaving you with no eyelashes or eyebrows at all. Vitiligo causes patches of skin to lose pigmentation and become much lighter than surrounding skin. If this occurs near eyebrows or on eyelids, the hair will typically fall out. Less Common Problems Blepharitis is a disorder that causes scaly skin to develop along the eyelids. The itching, swelling and sensitivity to light that are common to this problem contribute to the loss of eyelashes. Both under-active and overactive Thyroid conditions can cost you eyelash and eyebrow hair, though it is not a common symptom of the disorder. Trichotillomania causes an uncontrollable urge to pull out your own hair, including eyebrows and eyelashes. According to MayoClinic.

com, the disorder is inherited or caused by brain chemical malfunctioning. Allergies Makeup allergies can begin anytime in life. One symptom of eye-makeup allergies is the loss of eyelashes. Sharing eye makeup and using makeup older than four months can also cause your eyelashes to fall out if the makeup is no longer sanitary or fresh. Treatment Consult a medical professional to determine the cause of your eyelash and eyebrow hair loss. In most cases, once the underlying cause is found and treated the hair will grow back. In conditions such as Alopecia Areata, the hair will not grow back, but it may be possible to slow or stop the progression of the hair loss. Of course with the beauty trends of today, it is not uncommon to use an eyebrow pencil for brows and/or to seek a lash technician for extensions. However, it is highly recommended that you seek medical advice to get to the root of the hair loss to avoid any further loss or damage. Once you have determined the cause of your hair loss, a qualified beautician can teach you to draw attention away from your missing eyebrows or eyelashes and instead play up other facial features.

The Health Benefits of

Drinking Kombucha by Ana Words by Blackburn Ana Blackburn

K

ombucha, pronounced kuhm boo chuh , is a drink with an age-old recipe originating in the far east. The Chinese referred to it as the Immortal Health Elixir. In recent years, Kombucha has become popular with the health conscious looking for an alternative to fizzy drinks packed with artificial sweeteners and red dye whatever! At first glance, you might just think Kombucha is a fizzy, yellow, sour liquid that happens to be really fun to say. But with greater focus on health, especially gut health in recent years, this ancient recipe with perceived health benefits has gained immense popularity in the lives of the modern person. Kombucha is a fermented drink made from black tea and sugar – either cane sugar, fructose or honey. A symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast, known as SCOBY, is added to begin fermentation. The drink ferments and carbonates, making it fizzy like a soda. The end product contains vinegar, vitamins from the B group, probiotics, and acids, including acetic, gluconic and lactic acid. The bacteria in SCOBY also produce cellulose within the drink which acts as a shield to cells.

Benefit #1:

Restore The Gut

Kombucha makes a difference in your body. One of the immediate effects of the drink comes from the probiotics found in it. Probiotics are the good bacteria that colonize your gut and help all the food be digested and utilized by the body. They also fight infections before they even reach any other place within the body. This is because 80% of the immune system is located in your gut. The combination of probiotics, amino acids and enzymes support digestion and prevent stomach ulcers. If you suffer from candida overgrowth, the

drink can help restore the balance within the digestive tract and repopulate the gut with good bacteria that pushes out candida.

cardiovascular diseases as well as by healthy individuals, on a daily basis. That’s pretty awesome, right?

Benefit #2:

Help Detox The Body

Antibiotic Without The Antibiotics The beneficial bacteria in kombucha drives out bad bacteria from the gut, the first gate through which bacteria enter the body.

Benefit #3:

Improve Your Mental State

Kombucha is rich in B vitamins. Particularly B12, a rare vitamin, is responsible for increased energy levels and overall mental well being. The restoring properties that Kombucha brings to the gut also improve your mindset. This is because an unhealthy gut can become permeable to undigested food particles that once inside the body cause inflammation, and feeling bad.

Benefit #4:

Keep Blood Sugar Under Control

Due to the antioxidants found in Kombucha, the drink claims to alleviate symptoms of diabetes. The Kombucha drink is made from an anti-diabetic black tea. This tea improves liver and kidney functions, essential to tackling the symptoms of diabetes.

Benefit #5:

Supports The Heart

Kombucha has a positive effect on the whole cardiovascular system. High triglycerides in the body are linked with an increased risk for heart disease. Kombucha lowers triglyceride levels and regulates cholesterol. A Indian research group completed a study on rats in 2016 and found that Kombucha can be recommended for consumption by people suffering from

Benefit #6:

The Kombucha drink is a powerful additive when doing a detox. The antioxidants in the drink boost the functions of the liver and help cope with all the harmful toxins. During a detox regime, the liver is even more overloaded with the constant need to take out toxins from the body so the Kombucha drink can be a benefit during this process.

More To Consider...

With all the health perks of the drink Kombucha, there are some risks to using it. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to stay away from it as well as people who have an extremely weakened immune system. Kombucha is not something that can be taken in unlimited quantities. Drinking too much Kombucha can give you a stomach ache and cause nausea. Although Kombucha can be produced at home, it is safer to buy it from a certified producer, since the production factories take care to maintain extremely clean equipment with which the drink is made. It is harder to maintain a sterile environment inside the home. Although few formal studies of the drink have been conducted and most of those have been on animals, the beneficial results claimed by people for thousands of years appear to make this drink a good addition to your healthy lifestyle plan.

We love to play off foods our mom cooked when we were younger. One of our favorites was always a spinach noodle casserole. Although our mom did make a healthy version, we’ve tweaked it a bit to make it more our own and incorporate more food groups.

In a medium saucepan, cook the olive oil and the onions on medium heat until tender. Once tender, add the spinach and cook until the leaves are wilted. Remove from heat. In a large bowl, mix quinoa, eggs, cheese and spices together. Fold in the spinach and onions.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Pour into a gratin bowl (or a bowl that can be put in the oven). Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top.

Chocolate Chip Cheesecake Recipe by The Sugar Mommas

A

favorite childhood memory was going to the original Cheesecake Factory with my grandmother. It was a tiny restaurant that served a few sandwiches and a wide selection of cheesecakes. For lunch, I would enjoy a grilled cheese sandwich and fries. I remember the sandwich was on thick toasted sourdough bread with sharp cheddar. For dessert, Grandma and I would split a piece of chocolate chip cheesecake. The big ol’ slice was such a treat. In honor of those bygone days, here is the Sugar Mommas’ version of Chocolate Chip Cheesecake. Enjoy!

Crust: What you need

of a food processor, pulse chocolate wafers until they are crushed. While the machine is running, slowly add in the melted butter. Continue to process the wafers until you have coarse cookie bits. Use a spatula to scoop the cookie bits into the springform pan. Use your hands or the back of a spoon to firmly press the wafers evenly on the bottom and up the sides of the pan. Place the pan in the refrigerator to chill for at least one hour.

Cheesecake: What you need

2 pounds cream cheese 2 cups sugar 4 large eggs 2 cups sour cream 2 teaspoons vanilla 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate bits.

Cheesecake: Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F. In the bowl of a stand alone mixer, beat cream cheese on medium speed until light and fluffy. Reduce speed to medium low and slowly beat in sugar. Scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add

the eggs, one at a time. Beat after each egg to make sure they are fully incorporated. Reduce speed to low and add the sour cream. Add vanilla and beat until blended. Fold in chocolate chips. Pour the filling into the chilled chocolate crust. Bake for one hour and ten minutes or until the center of cheesecake is no longer jiggly. Chill cheesecake for five hours or overnight.

SM Notes:

You may substitute Oreo cookies (the chocolate part) for the chocolate wafers.

Carpool Crunch:

Use a ready made Oreo cookie pie crust. You may have enough filling for two pies. These will be smaller so make sure to watch your bake time.

SASS it up:

Use Cacao/Barry Mini Semi-Sweet Chips for a different visual effect.

Make Your Home

Cozy for Fall Words by Anaverde Magazine

I

t’s no secret that fall is the coziest season, and for good reason! The cooler mountain air is upon us, the leaves will be changing soon, and

YES to pumpkin EVERYTHING! All this goodness is sure to give anyone all the autumn feels. We want to be sure to bring the best of fall into our homes as well. Your home can be cozy all year long and here’s what you can do to achieve just that.

Make the Place Sparkle

A clean home is often a happy home and before we begin, it is best to start with a nicely cleaned home. We’re talking tackling those dust bunnies, washing the area rugs, getting the carpet shampooed, power washing the porch, wiping down the doors and

36

light switches…the works. You may opt to clean your own home or hire a professional. Do what you have to do to make your place sparkle. You’ll be glad that you did.

Set the Atmosphere with the Right Lightning

Whether you’re using your fireplace, dimmers, candles, string lights, or lamps, fall is all about warm lighting. Pleasant lighting is a must for a cozy, fall home. It is best to use soft white light bulbs in your home to give off that nice amber-like glow.

Pillows & Blankets

Nothing says cozy quite like a nice pillow arrangement! Pillows are perfect for the fall season. Feel free to layer them up and mix textures for a warm,

cozy look. Be sure to throw in a fun, fall decorative pillow mixed in with snuggly pillows for those afternoon naps or a movie night. Blankets will warm up any space, figuratively and literally. Use them on your couch, thrown over a basket, on the edge of your bed, or even use a cute ladder to display an array of blankets in your living space!

Fall Candles

Bring that sweet aroma of pumpkin spice…we mean fall into your home with amazing candles! Even essential oils, plug-ins and room sprays will do the trick.

Fall Decorations

A really fun and easy way to display

your fall decor is to set up fall vignettesaround your home. Pick a spot on your sofa table or the hallway table, even on the kitchen island. Now is the time to grab fall decorating items like wreaths, pumpkins, lanterns, and mums. Get creative and have fun!

You Must Have a Coffee Bar

You see it on Instagram all the time. Coffee is a thing! Nothing screams falllike a good cup of pumpkin spice coffee [wink, wink]. Even if you are not a coffee drinker, create a nice little hot chocolate or hot tea bar. Be sure to add an assortment of toppings for your hot chocolate or an assortment of teas, your family and friends will feel the love.

Bring the Cozy Outdoors

As an Anaverde resident, you have the luxury of having a nice size backyard. Yay for that! Outdoor fire pits really set the mood for fall. It would be good to add one to your patio with nice chairs. Your outdoor setup is perfect for those cooler fall nights of conversations over roasted marshmallows and a glass of wine, perhaps. Follow these tips for your cozy home this fall and all year long, and you’ll be glad that you did. Cheers to the season!

A Clean Home is the Path to Your Bliss Words by Bailey Arnold

I

t is important to acknowledge that happiness, and creating a life that you love is a choice, simply put. Apparently, cleaning chores resulting in clean spaces also play an important role in developing empathy, compassion, connection and overall bliss. Research has shown that general unhappiness can be reduced by simply cleaning. From thousands surveyed by Clorox, 72 percent reported they sleep better in a clean house, 80 percent feel more relaxed and 60 percent feel less stress. When connecting with other people becomes more challenging in today’s world, we should know that we can overcome it with clean spaces. The cleanliness of your home could affect your mental and emotional state, boost productivity and help reduce stress. The cleaner the house, the more productive and stress-free the people who live there are. The best way to keep a clean space is to do a little cleaning and tidying up often. However, if you are the

38

personality type, who would rather schedule a block of time, each month, to focus on cleaning your home, then that works, too. It’s your journey. The key takeaway is to keep your space clean and in order. Your environment

plays a huge role in how you show up in life. If for some reason you have fallen short in the housekeeping department, get help. Either way, it is good to know that the ball is in your court and a happier home and blissful mood is fully in your power.

How to Curate the

Perfect Bed

for Your Master Bedroom Words by David Phoenix

H

ome and interior design are in a constant, ever advancing state of evolution. But since humans have sought shelter in caves, the primary purpose of our homes – shelter – has remained constant. Of all the rooms that serve this critical need, none embodies it like the master bedroom – and no single piece of furniture is more critical to rest, relaxation and rejuvenation as the master bed. Considering we spend almost a third of our lives in bed, our master bed may be the single most important piece of furniture in our homes. Here are some tips to make the right choice for yours. Follow these guidelines and you’ll sleep easy knowing you’ve actually thought through the process.

Start With A Great Foundation. The most vital part of any master bed is the mattress. Mattresses range in price from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. But no single mattress is right for everyone and the bed that’s best for you may not have the highest price. Personal preference is key so be prepared to invest in what’s best for you.

You Can Always Try Before You Buy.

If you feel intimidated climbing onto a mattress in a store and settling down as if about to take a nap, don’t. That’s exactly what you should do – and what the staff at any reputable establishment expects. Take enough time to determine whether a bed’s level of support is right for you. When in doubt, opt for the slightly firmer choice. Ever stay at a hotel or resort where you enjoyed an unbelievable night’s sleep atop a bed that was just

40

perfect? Inquire about the make of mattress the hotel provides guests. Upscale chains like the Ritz-Carlton and Westin Hotels even offer the mattresses and bedding they use for purchase, for guests who want to experience the same level of comfort at home and the investment is a lot more affordable than you might expect. Talk about luxe!

Know What You Are Hopping Into Bed With.

If you are sensitive to chemicals, pay close attention to the contents of a mattress. Research natural options like those using cotton, horsehair (which is hypoallergenic), wool and down. Many commercial mattresses contain synthetic materials like formaldehyde and polyurethane foam, which “offgas,” releasing smelly and potentially toxic volatile compounds. It’s enough to make anyone lose sleep, which is decidedly against the point when it comes to beds. If you are bothered by the smell a mattress gives off in the store, steer clear, because it’s not likely to smell better once you get it home.

Protect Your Investment.

We’ve established a good mattress is not only a worthwhile luxury but an investment as well. You should purchase a mattress protector, which guards against dander and is obviously much easier to launder than a mattress. Flipping your mattress every other month, in addition to taking a vacuum brush to its exterior, will also help your mattress stay in top condition.

In Bedding, Thread Count Counts – But Only So Much. Thread count can be an important indicator of quality, but what matters most is what those threads are made of: specifically, the thread’s fibers. Cotton-polyester sheets may last longer, but all cotton sheets – specifically, those woven with “pima,” Supima or Egyptian long-staple cotton – will yield a softer, finer hand. Sheets are often chemically-treated to keep them from shrinking and wrinkling, but sheets labeled “purefinish” are produced without chemical treatments. What you will give up in sheen and longevity, you will gain in comfort. Consider having several sets of bedding: it will increase the longevity of each set and give you different seasonal options to help change up the look of your master bedroom. If you are concerned about cost, know that bedding does not have to cost a fortune to be fabulous

Take Cover.

The main purpose of a comforter is warmth. For this purpose, you may want to have two: one for summer and a heavier one for winter. Down is an ideal choice for an all-season comforter. When properly laundered, down will keep you cool when you want to be cool and warm when you’re hoping for a toastier slumber. Down pillows are also a luxurious place to lay one’s head, but go with a choice that provides the level of support your neck needs.

Make Sure That You Have Good Bedside Manner.

Now that your bed is outfitted to perfection, the last thing to consider is the bedside table, if you chose to have one. I do and I keep only the essentials there: soft, incandescent lighting for reading a good book, a scented candle, and my cell phone, which now serves, as it does for many, as my alarm clock. A charger, tucked away so the cord is barely visible, ensures my phone’s just as recharged and ready for the new day as I am. Sweet dreams!

Create a Life

You Love Words by Malena Jackson

Y

ou get to decide the life that you want to live. It really is that simple. Why not create a life you love.

Let’s explore the term “Love” for a moment…shall we. Not a day goes by where someone somewhere is hoping to find that special someone. I’ve seen it at the coffee shop, it’s hard to ignore on social media, and I most definitely see the strong desire to be loved by someone else in most, if not all of today’s movies and shows. There’s just this deep intrigue about relationships and being in love. Everyone seems to be drawn to the idea that if only I could find someone to love me, then everything will fall into place. To be loved gives you this complete sense of acceptance. To be “wanted” by someone is what makes your world go round. The chosen one. Someone to go home to. Someone to call your own. This is what we’re after. This is what makes everything fall into place. Could it be that being in a meaningful relationship is the cure to mental unsteadiness? Is it that having a sense of security in your relationship calms your mental ill? “People involved in loving, philia-based relationships have [fewer] doctor visits, shorter hospital visits, have less pain, and have more positive emotions,” said Kirtly Parker Jones, MD, of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at University of Utah Healthcare. You’ve heard someone say, “Before I found my partner, I felt lost or incomplete.” A romantic relationship does not have to be the cure to your loneliness. In fact,

44

it is a disservice to everyone to put so much pressure on yourself or someone else to complete you. You are the only person who can complete you. No one has the power to do this for you. Let that sink in for a moment. Pause. You are whole. There is nothing missing, only your perception of what you think might be missing. The more that you think about these things, the more incomplete you will feel. It’s really all just an illusion. When you count on yourself for finding true happiness and feeling wholeness, that is true love. Think about it, how cruel would life be if our happiness really depended on whether some outside force accepts and loves us or not?

“You are here to live life and to love your life. And it all depends on you and what you choose to focus on”.

It is easier to love yourself and your life today than it was 20 years ago. We have a plethora of resources, clubs, organizations at hand that provide the tools that are useful in creating a lovely life. Mindfulness is the most useful tool required to create a life you love. A recent study at Harvard Medical School proved that using mindfulness is effective for cultivating more positive outlooks on life with people suffering not only from depression but from

other life circumstances that breed negativity, like traumatic events and even physical illness. “Mindfulness builds resilience and awareness to help people learn how to ride life’s ups and downs and live happier and healthier lives,” said Suzanne Westbrook, a retired internalmedicine doctor, who teaches at the Center for Mindfulness & Compassion for the Cambridge Health Alliance. If no one can complete you but you, why not start with you. There is no reason to go looking for love. Love is right here for you to give to yourself. You are at your best when you know that you are complete with someone and you are complete without someone. There is no way to lose. You can’t lose. If these words resonate with you, I want to assure you that your only assignment is to fall in love with your life. What are you doing to truly live? Sitting, waiting, moaning and complaining about what’s going on in the world, the people in it and how you might be coming up short does not serve you. Take a real close look at your life. When

was the last time that you were good to you? What type of information are you digesting? What conversations are you having? What kind of people do you hang around? It’s true, what you focus on grows. Who you are being affects who you will attract. Be the whole you – full and complete. There is no need to make announcements or feel as though you have to change cold turkey. Slow and steady wins the race. This new way of being can and will take time. Just know, the work is within you. There is nothing that needs to be done on the outside. However, the only thing that you can do is to guard your heart. Only vibe with those, who are up to some good. Your heart will tell you if something is off. This

is a no judgment zone. It is not your job to fix anyone. Just focus on yourself. If creating a life you love means that you can no longer tolerate the behavior of someone in your world, then, it is time to let them go.

flow to you.

Be encouraged. You do not need permission to be who you want to be. Your job is to keep evolving. Keep your head up. Read good books. I’ve curated a list just for you. Books that have helped me stay in the flow of a life that I love to live.

Why isn’t life a bed of roses, when in fact, it can be. You’re the creator. That means that you are responsible for your life whether it is good, bad or indifferent. Sit with that for a moment.

Remember, creating a life you love is more than just great quotes and being nice to everyone. It’s going to take some mental work and it is constant work. But this work will be like flowing down a freshwater stream. There is no struggle or fight but you must own your good and your good will constantly

I know that the world teaches us that life simply isn’t a bed of roses…but I want to challenge that. Why not?

Now, instead of mentally purchasing a one way ticket on the struggle bus, let’s look at this concept from an empowering perspective. Ask yourself, what is in my life that is hindering me from loving the life that I live? There! Explore this. Dig deep and know that you have the power and the strength to prune the vine. Create a life you love and don’t look back.

Create a Life You Love: The Importance of Sleep Words by Anaverde Magazine

Sleep gives you physical balance Sleep helps you maintain your physical abilities. Studies show sleep deprivation leads to short-term balance problems. Sleep is good for the heart During sleep, your body releases hormones. Some of them keep your heart and blood vessels healthy. Sleep regulates your blood sugar Sleep helps regulate your metabolism. That’s the way your body converts food to energy.

G

etting a good night’s sleep is essential to living a wholesome life. Many people underestimate the importance of sleep. You may often hear someone bragging about how little sleep they need to be productive during the day. This is a big no, no. Evidence suggests that the lack of sleep contributes to

50

the formation of new mental health problems and to the maintenance of existing ones. Adults aged 18 to 60 years are recommended to sleep at least 7 hours each night. Ignoring the importance of sleep may have an impact on your overall health and can hinder you from creating a life that you love. Let’s explore the benefits of a good night’s sleep and how sleep is a necessary ingredient that adds power to your life:

Sleep wards off stress Sleep helps your mind and body relax and recover from your day. When you’re sleep deprived, your body releases stress hormones. Sleep minimizes inflammation Sleep regulates your immune system. When you don’t get enough, irregular immune system activity can cause inflammation. Sleep helps manage weight loss Research suggests that people who sleep less are more likely to be overweight or obese.

Sleep keeps you alert during the day A good night’s sleep makes you feel energized and alert. This helps you focus and get things done. Sleep cultivates good memory Sleep appears to play a big role in what’s called memory consolidation. During sleep, your brain makes connections. It links events, feelings, and sensory input to form memories. Sleep makes you a better problem solver Executive function involves complex thinking. That includes things like problemsolving, planning, and making decisions. Sleep repairs your body While you sleep, your body works hard to repair damage. The damage can be from stress, ultraviolet rays, and other harmful things you’re exposed to. While you sleep, your body is hard at work. Quality sleep allows you to be energetic and alert. It allows you to lose weight, exercise, work, learn, socialize, and do all the things you enjoy. By all means, get your sleep.

MAKE Being on Vacation a Simple State of Mind Words by Alexis Tiacoh of Expedia.com rior to COVID-19, Expedia’s annual study that examines trends and attitudes around taking time off revealed vacation deprivation levels were already on the rise in the U.S., yet the benefits of travel were widely understood and appreciated.

P

1. Talk to friends and family about a vacation/vacation memory, especially those you traveled with

According to a 2020 study of 1,500 Expedia travelers, traveling promotes general well-being by 93 percent, gives us a chance to hit the “reset” button on stress and anxiety by 91 percent, improves our attitudes by 86 percent and helps us switch off from work by 83 percent.

4. Wear clothes and use souvenirs you bought on vacation

Together these positive effects foster a psychological condition that could be described as a Vacation State of Mind, and it extends far beyond the trip itself.
