LES PÊCHEURS DE PERLES (Georges Bizet) Sat 16 Jan Tickets: £20 & £10 (Concession – under 18 & students) Time: 6pm

Theatre at The Mill

TURANDOT (Giacomo Puccini)

Bizet’s gorgeous opera of lust and longing set in the Far East returns to the Met stage for the first time in 100 years. Soprano Diana Damrau stars as Leïla, the beautiful Hindu priestess pursued by rival pearl divers competing for her hand. Her suitors are tenor Matthew Polenzani and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien, who sing the lilting duet Au fond du temple saint, which opera fans know and adore. Director Penny Woolcock explores the timeless themes of pure love, betrayal, and vengeance in a production that vividly creates an undersea world on the stage of the Met. Conductor Gianandrea Noseda brings his romantic flair to the lush score from the composer of Carmen.

Tickets: £20 & £10 (Concession – under 18 & students) Time: 6pm

Nina Stemme take the title role of the proud princess of ancient China, whose riddles doom every suitor who seeks her hand. Tenor Marco Berti is Calàf, the brave prince who sings Nessun dorma and wins her love. Franco Zeffirelli’s golden production is conducted by Paolo Carignani.

MANON LESCAUT (Giacomo Puccini) Sat 5 Mar Tickets: £20 & £10 (Concession – under 18 & students) Time: 6pm

The Met stage ignites when soprano Kristine Opolais and tenor Jonas Kaufmann join forces in Puccini’s obsessive love story. Opolais sings the title role of the country girl who

Cultural Life

transforms herself into a Parisian temptress, while Kaufmann is the dashing student who desperately woos her. Director Richard Eyre places the action in occupied France in a film noir setting. “Desperate passion” is the phrase Puccini himself used to describe the opera that confirmed his position as the preeminent Italian opera composer of his day. Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi leads the stirring score.

MADAMA BUTTERFLY (Giacomo Puccini) Sat 2 Apr Tickets: £20 & £10 (Concession – under 18 & students) Time: 6pm

Anthony Minghella’s breathtaking production has thrilled audiences ever since its premiere in 2006. One of the world’s foremost Butterflys, soprano Kristine Opolais, is in the title role. Tenor Roberto Alagna sings Pinkerton, the naval officer who breaks Butterfly’s heart. Karel Mark Chichon conducts.

Soprano Sondra Radvanovsky takes on the extraordinary challenge of singing all three of Donizetti’s Tudor queens in the course of a single season, a rare feat made famous by Beverly Sills— and not attempted on a New York stage since. On screen, in this climactic opera of the trilogy, she plays Queen Elizabeth I, forced to sign the death warrant of the nobleman she loves, Roberto Devereux. Tenor Matthew Polenzani is Devereux, and mezzosoprano Elina Garanca and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien complete the principal quartet in the bel canto masterpiece, conducted by Donizetti specialist Maurizio Benini. As with the earlier Anna Bolena and Maria Stuarda, the production is by Sir David McVicar, who with this staging completes an enormously ambitious directorial accomplishment..

7

The genius director Patrice Chéreau (From the House of the Dead) didn’t live to see his great Elektra production, previously presented in Aix and Milan, make it to the stage of the Met. But his overpowering vision lives on with soprano Nina Stemme—unmatched today in the heroic female roles of Strauss and Wagner—who portrays Elektra’s primal quest for vengeance for the murder of her father, Agamemnon. Legendary mezzo-soprano Waltraud Meier is chilling as Elektra’s fearsome mother, Klytämnestra. Soprano Adrianne Pieczonka and bass-baritone Eric Owens are Elektra’s troubled siblings. Chéreau’s musical collaborator Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts Strauss’s mighty take on Greek myth..

Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Triple Bill 2016 showcases three engaging works in celebration of their 35th anniversary. Shakespeare’s timeless themes of desire, duplicity and unrequited love are brought to life in Kate Flatt’s Undivided Loves. Fusing sound, words and dance, Shakespeare’s most intimate, mysterious and radical sonnets are reimagined to Adriano Adewale’s vibrant and percussive score. In contrast, Dutch/Israeli choreographer Itzik Galili reworks his piece, Until.With/Out.Enough, which explores the concept of the enclosed space that exists within our minds. Finally, the quirky and playful Bloom by award-winning choreographer Caroline Finn explores the darkly comic expressions of life and humanity. Until.With/Out.Enough is a co-commission between The Royal Ballet and Phoenix Dance Theatre. Undivided Loves is co-commissioned with Watford Palace Theatre. Bloom is commissioned in partnership with the New Adventures Choreographer Award. Schools Workshops available on Tues 5 April 2016. School Workshop and Show Ticket £10. Contact the box office on 028 9034 0202 for more information.

This popular mixed voice choir enjoys a busy diary of engagements throughout the season. It has singers from all professions who base themselves in Ballyclare, a town well known for its musical traditions. Their conductor is local Mezzo-Soprano, Sheelagh Greer and their accompanist is Darren Baird, also a full-time musician.

Henry V tells the story of young King Henry’s famous victory at Agincourt while outnumbered, but underestimated, by the French. The show uses football shirts to separate the French and English armies in Shakespeare’s most patriotic History play. An exciting, humorous and profound portrait of the birth of modern England.

Most recently they were selected to take part in the BBC Songs of Praise. We are delighted to be hosting this year’s concert at our local Theatre at The Mill in Newtownabbey and welcome you, whether you are a regular supporter, or hearing us for the first time as we continue to encourage strong links within the borough.

The most talked-about new Shakespeare company in the UK, Merely Theatre has honed a style that strips the Bard back to basics - no gauche sets, frilly collars or fussy props: just the actors, the audience and the text. Now the company are stripping back something more profound: the concept of gender.

The Mulligan Brothers, related only by their music, are an extremely accomplished fourpiece band playing a fine blend of alt-country, blues, folk and americana. It has been said that their music can compare favourably to that of The Lumineers, boosted by a hot fiddle, and the songwriting genius of Townes Van Zandt. The boys themselves are Ross Newell (guitar/lead vocals); Ben Leininger (bass/vocals) Gram Rea (fiddle/mandolin/viola/harmonica/vocals) and Greg DeLuca (drums/vocals). While Ross is the principal songwriter among the bunch, Gram, Ben and Greg provide a sound that is well worth hearing live.

Saviour or witch? Love her or hate her? Not for Pip to decide, only to portray. She divided the nation like no other politician, she changed the face of British, perhaps world politics forever and the effects of her influence and policies are still felt today. Hear her philosophies, her inspiration and her logic, and then take the chance to question her. Pip is one of the world’s leading performers of solo theatre, known internationally for his spellbinding portrayals of Adolf, Churchill, Dickens, Casanova, Chaplin, Hancock and many others. ‘Maggie’ is probably Pip’s greatest challenge yet. Pip not only becomes Margaret Thatcher but risks taking audience questions, and answering them as Maggie!
