I also had the honour of playing a game of snooker with Mark Allen at a recent celebration event in the Antrim Forum. I like to think that it was my opening break and indeed only shot, which assisted Mark in reaching a break of 147! See page 4 for more details. This summer we have the Allianz Garden Show Ireland returning to Antrim Castle Gardens, which is a superb day out for all the family to enjoy. We also have plenty of summer activities and programmes planned including Ballyclare May Fair, summer schemes and of course a special screening of the Royal Wedding. For a full list of our summer events, see pages 8-15. May I take this opportunity to say a most sincere thank you for all the encouragement and support I have received as Mayor. It has been my great honour to be the First Citizen of such a fantastic Borough, populated by so many lovely people. Councillor Paul Hamill Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey

LOVE LIVING HERE 26
Just last month I had the privilege of hosting a celebration evening for the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service with special guest Sir Martyn Lewis CBE. Without the dedication and commitment of volunteers, many local groups, sports clubs, church groups and societies simply would not exist. Two of the local voluntary groups that were awarded a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service was Antrim Youth Counselling Service and TIDAL in Toome. Details of these groups can be found on page 24.

MARK ALLEN CELEBRATION EVENT The atmosphere was on cue at Antrim Forum for the Mark Allen Celebration Event as around 500 fans gathered to welcome the local 2018 Masters Snooker Champion.
The snooker superstar was on form when he shot a spectacular 147 break to the cheers of his home crowd during his frame against Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Paul Hamill. The event was hosted by BBC’s Stephen Watson and as well as the many Mark Allen fans, guests included friends, family and local snooker club members. The Mayor commented, “Mark is the first Northern Irishman to win one of snooker's three major titles since Dennis Taylor's Masters victory in 1987. It is my honour to congratulate him on not just this amazing achievement but as an ambassador for his home town of Antrim.”
WHEELIE ACTIVE If you have a disability and would like to get active, we have a range of fitness classes running in a number of our Council facilities. Classes include wheelchair netball, wheelie active, wheelchair hurling and much more!
i
If you would like to get involved or require more information on any of these classes T. 028 9446 3113 or E. david.mckee @antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk
GYMNASTIC FANTASTIC Congratulations to Maria Buick, the Council’s Lead Gymnastics Coach, who recently won the Services to Gymnastics Award at the British Gymnastics 2018 Awards. This award recognises Maria’s commitment and enthusiasm to the development of gymnastics at all levels over many years and the priceless contribution she has made to gymnastics within Northern Ireland.
CAN WE TEMPT YOUR TASTEBUDS? If you are at any of our Council facilities, why not pop in for lunch or a cup of coffee and a sweet treat? We offer a wide and varied range of places to eat, drink and enjoy with friends or family.

BOROUGH BOROUGH LIFE LIFE // October // April 2018 2017

MAKING THINGS EASIER It is very important to us that all our residents can enjoy our facilities and services. To help make this happen we are making improvements to our facilities and events to support those with additional needs. We are very encouraged by the feedback we have had to date on this work and are excited to share the progress. Our first fully inclusive event was at the Enchanted Winter Gardens at Antrim Castle Gardens in December. This event was a huge success and adjustments like the sensory and quiet rooms were popular on the night. Mary Connor from Sensory Kids NI was on hand to offer some great advice and provide useful contacts to parents. This was a pilot event and we are planning ahead for future events.
AUTISM FRIENDLY We want to become an 'Autism Friendly' council. With training for our staff to better support and understand colleagues and customers who have autism, and making some adjustments to our services and facilities, we hope to make our facilities more autism friendly and welcoming for all.
CHANGING PLACES Heading out for a day or even a few hours can be a real challenge for some families. To improve our provision of accessible facilities we are adding two new 'Changing Places' facilities in our Borough. A 'Changing Places' facility is a specially designed changing bathroom, which includes a height adjustable changing bench with hoist. These new facilities will be located in Antrim Forum and the Valley Leisure Centre. We have one already at Antrim Castle Gardens.
JAM CARD It’s not always easy for everyone to express themselves and for those with a learning difficulty, a brain injury or speech impediment, it can sometimes feel awkward in public trying to make yourself understood. We hope the JAM card will help, by letting others know they need 'Just a Minute' discreetly and easily. The JAM Card allows this to happen in a simple, effective nonverbal manner so those with a communication barrier feel more at ease in expressing themselves. We will be rolling this initiative out in our facilities soon. Watch this short video to learn more; antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk/JAM
i
If you want to learn more on these initiatives or would like to make any comments or suggestions T. 028 9446 3113 or E. ellen.boyd@antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk

CUSTOMER ACCESS IMPROVEMENTS
INCLUSIVE PLAY
DISABILITY SPORTS HUBS
A number of parents of children with disabilities from the NI Parents for Change group contacted us about the provision of accessible play equipment throughout our Borough.
Adults and children from local groups and schools as well as local sporting champion, Michael McKillop, recently gathered at Antrim Forum for the official launch of our Disability Sports Hubs. Through nearly ÂŁ50,000 of investment from Disability Sport Northern Ireland, the Council has received a range of exciting new sports equipment for individuals and groups to use at the main hub at Antrim Forum as well as the two satellite hubs at Allen Park and the Valley Leisure Centre.
In support of these requests, we have installed the first wheelchair accessible swing in our Borough at V36, Newtownabbey. To help protect this new facility, the seat of the swing is secured via a RADAR key. Keys are available free of charge, from the Valley Leisure Centre, Antrim Civic Centre or Mossley Mill. These keys also give access to lots of accessible toilets across the UK and Ireland.
NOT ALL DISABILITIES ARE VISIBLE We have recently installed new Braille signage at Allen Park. We also installed Hidden Disability signage in the Valley Pavilion. Inspiration for the 'not every disability is visible' campaign is credited to the many people living with hidden disabilities such as Crohn’s and Colitis. The signs, placed on accessible toilet doors, urge people to remember that not all disabilities are visible.
They are intended to help those with conditions like Crohn's disease, autism, anxiety and inflammatory bowel disease, feel more welcome when using such facilities without facing potential criticism. Over time, more of this inclusive signage will be introduced throughout Council facilities.
The equipment includes twelve sports wheelchairs, one rugby wheelchair, three track racers, five hand cycles, four tandems, three trikes, three boccia sets and one sensory activity pack. Whilst the equipment is for people with a disability, it can also be used by non-disabled people in our Borough, to spread awareness in schools and clubs. For more information T. 028 9446 3113 or E. david.mckee@antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk
i
NEW PLAY PARK AT ANTRIM LOUGH SHORE PARK Work has commenced on the development of a nautical themed play park, including a wheelchair accessible boat, a wheelchair accessible swing and inclusive roundabout. The nautical theme was chosen by local children during the design stages. This exciting new play park will undoubtedly enhance your visit to the Lough Shore. The Park should be open in time for the summer holidays, so come along and enjoy some of their great ideas for yourself!

GET HOOKED ANTRIM & NEW TOWNABBEY BOROUGH COUNCIL ANGLING GUIDE
The Borough offers some of the most exciting game and coarse fishing in Northern Ireland and it is not unknown for anglers to ‘get hooked’ on our fisheries and scenic rivers. Whether you’re a keen angler or a novice wanting to while away a few hours, our Borough is the perfect place to indulge your passion.
ANGLING GUIDE ANTRIM AND NEWTOWNABBEY
Whether you’re a keen angler or a novice wanting to while away a few hours, our Borough offers some of the most exciting game and coarse fishing in Northern Ireland
The Borough is renowned for its great rivers and streams, teeming with wild brown trout, salmon and dollaghan. The mysterious and powerful dollaghan are migratory brown trout which, around midsummer, enter the rivers from Lough Neagh to spawn. These trout are highly prized and can grow to specimen size. The area also offers still water fishing, where you can pursue some hard-fighting rainbow trout, or if you prefer, our rivers and lakes also offer some superb coarse fishing. Our coastal location means we can even offer some sea fishing on Belfast Lough during the summer months. This guide will help you to discover all that there is to offer in this most interesting and wonderful part of Northern Ireland. Check out 21/03/2018 11:25

PARK LIFE Across our Borough, we are lucky to have a wide range of parks and open spaces. From the formal grandeur of Antrim Castle Gardens, to the variety along the Newtownabbey Way, all our parks and open spaces are immensely important to us. A recent event with local children demonstrated that playing in our parks isn’t always about swings, zip lines and climbing frames. They also like to hide in trees, feed the ducks and watch the heron catch a fish. We are currently developing a park life web app and piloting it at Sixmilewater Park, Ballyclare over the summer months. The app will help visitors find out more about the site, future events, facilities, biodiversity and history. It will also encourage you to let us know what you got up to on your visit. You will be encouraged to upload photos of your trip. There will also be a special section encouraging families to play games, using materials found in the Park. If the pilot is a success, we will be rolling it out to all of the other parks in the Borough. Make sure you keep an eye on our Facebook page, to find out when this exciting new Park Life web app is launched.

ON PATROL WITH OUR PARK WARDENS The Borough has some great parks and they provide opportunities for walking, running, cycling, as well as play. For many, they provide the opportunity for getting some fresh air and headspace. Lots of you help to bring our Parks to life through volunteering, schools projects and events. Our Park Wardens patrol our parks to keep them safe and provide a point of contact locally. If you see them on a visit to one of our parks, please let them know if there is something that needs attention. We caught up with them to find out about life in our Borough’s parks. WHAT DOES YOUR AVERAGE DAY LOOK LIKE? We visit and patrol all of the parks across the Borough, from Toomebridge to Crumlin Glen to Jordanstown Loughshore Park and everything in between. We do our best to be visible and to build relationships with the community and volunteers. On a daily basis, we are amazed at the number of people who use our Parks in so many healthy ways. WHAT SORT OF THINGS DO YOU COME ACROSS? We see lots of people from all walks of life and age groups. We see many responsible dog owners who love to use our parks. We also come across a few dog owners who don’t clean up after their pet and that concerns us as it is not fair on the other visitors to the parks. We would appeal to those people who currently do not act responsibly, to think of others and clean up after their dogs. The majority of people also use the bins and don’t litter but again, there are a few who do not. Council staff clean parks and empty bins but if everyone plays their part, it makes our parks better for everyone. When we meet people in the parks we encourage them to be responsible but we also remind them that they can be fined for littering or not cleaning up after their dogs. WHAT’S NEW IN THE PARKS? Our parks are vibrant with regular events including biodiversity trails, guided walks and play days. Some of the bigger events are really special like Brighter Nights, Party in the Park, Shoreline Festival and our Summer Sunday Music series. Look out for these over the summer months. It’s great to see so many people coming out and enjoying themselves In this magazine, you can also read about how the Council is continuing to improve our play parks, like the wheelchair accessible swing at V36 and the new accessible toilets at the pavilion.

BLOOMING BRILLIANT
LOVE YOUR GARDEN
Towns and villages across the Borough are getting geared up for the summer sunshine. Many of them have local groups made up of residents, businesses, schools, churches and youth groups who, in partnership with the Council, work throughout the year to make a difference. Can you help make a difference?
Do you love your garden? Or perhaps you know someone who works tirelessly to keep their garden looking beautiful. If so, why not enter our Best Kept Garden competition? Whether your garden is big or small, the competition is open to all residents within the Borough and is designed to encourage everyone to take pride in their garden. This is a fantastic way to enjoy some good neighbourly competition! The closing date for entries is Saturday 30 June and judging will take place in July.
Recently we have had many awards presented to our towns, villages, local business and housing areas for their efforts to make where you work and live a better place. SO WHAT MAKES AN AWARD WINNING AREA? The key is community involvement. Many groups throughout the Borough work in partnership with the Council to encourage a beautiful area. Volunteers from local areas take part in clean-ups, plant and maintain summer bedding, paint railings, and much more. So much can be achieved when everyone pulls together.
While the presentation of an award is a welcome celebration, the benefits for the local area go way beyond. With the local community engaged, more people become interested and ideas develop. Friendships are created and a strong essence of pride and ownership ensures continued support and sustainability in the area. Volunteering is a great opportunity to build friendships and can have a positive impact on your mental wellbeing.

PLASTIC FANTASTIC There is no doubt that plastic is a very useful material and the fact that it continues to dominate our shopping aisles confirms this. With more than fifty different types of plastic available, knowing which plastic items to recycle can be confusing. Here is a list of some of the common items that can be recycled and should be put in either your blue bin, kerbie box or triplestack: • Plastic bottles (squash down and keep lid on) • Yoghurt pots • Butter tubs • Ice-cream tubs • Shampoo bottles
HOW ARE WE DOING?
In the first six months of the year, the Borough had a recycling rate of just over 57%. Whilst this is great news, there are still a lot of recyclables being placed in the black bin and therefore going to landfill. The biggest culprit of recyclable materials found in the black bin is food waste (23.5%) and paper/cardboard (16%). WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP? Ensure that all food waste is placed in the brown bin for recycling. All paper and cardboard should be put into your blue bin, kerbie box or triple stack. This includes items such as cereal boxes, food and drink cartons, online delivery boxes (remove all plastic inserts, polystyrene and packing tape) and greetings cards (tear off any glitter, badges or batteries). DID YOU KNOW? Card that is stained with food, grease, paint or dirt (e.g. takeaway pizza boxes) can be put in your brown bin?
• Shower gel bottles • Detergent bottles • Fruit and meat trays Please Note: Plastic bags and plastic film should be removed and put into the black bin.

BAG YOURSELF SOME FREE COMPOST Local residents can bag themselves some free compost from 7-12 May as we celebrate Compost Awareness Week. Did you know that food waste disposed of in your brown bin is taken to a central composting plant where it is processed and converted into a high quality compost? So thanks to your food recycling, not only can we produce this valuable compost for our gardens but we can also reduce the amount we send to landfill, saving money and helping the environment! A limited supply of the compost will be available from each of our five recycling centres and will be distributed on a first come first
serve basis. Supplies will be limited to one bag per household. If you’re planning on getting your garden into shape for the summer, then don’t forget you can also use your brown bin to recycle your garden waste. Hedge clippings, tree cuttings, branches and grass can all be placed in your brown bin.

WEST SIDE STORY
Mon 16 July – Sat 4 Aug (Performances: Tues 31 July-Sat 4 Aug at 7pm) Time: 10am-5pm // Cost: £275 // Age: 11-23 Theatre at The Mill’s big summer production this year is West Side Story. This powerful interpretation of Romeo and Juliet proves to be as poignant and timely as ever bringing together two masters, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim in a score regarded as the best ever written. Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City, as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time. Directed by a celebrated and prodigiously talented creative team, this three-week workshop includes five fully staged performances.
‘CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS’ AND 'THE LION KING' DANCE WORKSHOP Mon 6 Aug-Fri 10 Aug Time: 10am-4.30pm Cost: £125 // Age: 7+
The fun continues at the Theatre at The Mill with a week-long dance workshop under the direction of Laura Walker and Jennifer Milligan, followed by a performance to family and friends on Friday 10 August. This year the team bring together the classical and modern dance themed around ‘Carnival of the Animals’ and ‘The Lion King’. Young dancers aged 7yrs+ will build skills and confidence in movement, learning the choreographed routines from both of these very different classics of the world of Ballet and Musical Theatre.

LOVE LIVING HERE - LOCAL GROUPS RECEIVE FUNDING Over 60 community and voluntary groups from across the Borough recently received funding through the Council’s Community Development and Festivals Grant Aid Programme*. This funding of over £250,000 helped to support a range of community projects including: • Community festivals • Summer schemes • Social inclusion programmes for older and vulnerable people • General running costs for community premises The Council is delighted to support these community and voluntary groups from across the Borough. Not only do these groups work tirelessly to help improve the area in which they live in but many of them provide opportunities for residents to participate in a wide range of activities and projects, which have huge physical and social benefits and would not have taken place without this funding. The Community Development and Community Festivals Grant Aid Programme is accessed via an online grant system and is open once a year from October to December to constituted community and voluntary organisations based or working in the Borough. A Small Grants Programme is also open throughout the year, subject to budget availability.

BE AWARE OF THE ‘SILENT KILLER’
HEALTH RISKS OF ARTIFICIAL TANNING
As the summer season approaches and families head off to the caravan or camping, it is important to remind ourselves of the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning in enclosed spaces. Often referred to as the ‘silent killer’, carbon monoxide gas cannot be seen, has no taste or smell and is highly poisonous. BBQs, both gas and charcoal, are potential sources of carbon monoxide and should only be used outside in the open air. Once brought into a small space, the carbon monoxide produced cannot escape and can build up to a dangerous level. Although it may be tempting to provide an extra heat source, disposable or portable BBQs should never be brought into a tent once cooking has finished. Likewise, if the weather turns wet, never bring a BBQ into a garage or shed to continue cooking.
SIGNS OF CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING: • Headaches • Dizziness • Nausea • Breathlessness • Chest pain • Stomach pain • Tiredness • Loss of consciousness If you suspect poisoning, turn off or extinguish the heat source/appliance if safe to do so, ventilate the area and stay outside in the fresh air. If you are suffering from any of the above symptoms, seek medical help immediately. Make sure to keep all heat sources or appliances switched off until chimneys/flues are cleaned or appliances are checked by a qualified professional. Make sure to get a carbon monoxide alarm for your caravan as well as your home…it could save your life!

26 ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
We all feel better with a tan but too much exposure could damage your skin. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer with the main cause being ultraviolet radiation (UVR). The deliberate exposure to artificial sources of UVR such as sunbeds and facial tanners is increasing the number of cases of skin cancer, particularly among young adults. Sunbeds and tanning booths emit harmful levels of UVR that can be as intense as midday sunlight. As well as increasing the risk of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer, other health risks from sunbeds include sunburns, accelerated skin ageing, eye inflammation and suppressed immune system. Young people under the age of 18 are particularly at risk, as their skin is more delicate and prone to damage than older skin. It is now illegal in Northern Ireland for anyone under the age of 18 to use a sunbed. All operators must display information on the risks of using sunbeds to the user and must make eye protection available. Council’s Environmental Health Officers regularly carry out inspections on those who operate a sunbed service. Remember - if you don’t tan in the sun, you won’t tan more easily on a sunbed. Getting a tan before you go on a sun holiday doesn’t build up your resistance to UV rays.
i
For more information or if you have any concerns about premises operating sunbeds T. 028 9034 0160 or E. envhealth@antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk
THINK HYGIENE ON YOUR DAY OUT Now that the better weather is here, many of us will be planning day trips with the family. With the sun shining, it’s lovely to be able to eat outdoors but it’s important to remember some good hygiene to avoid germs such as E. coli and salmonella joining the party.
KEEP FOOD COOL AND SAFE • Always use a cool box with enough ice packs to keep food chilled. Frozen juice cartons make excellent ice packs if you don’t have any • Leave food in the fridge until the very last moment and then pack immediately into cool box • Keep cool box in the coolest part of your car e.g. the boot and away from direct sunlight. Try and keep the lid closed as much as you can • Make sure you separate the raw food from the cooked and ready-to-eat food.
COOKING ON THE BARBECUE • Always cook sausages, burgers, kebabs, pork and poultry thoroughly until they are piping hot all the way through and make sure they have no pink meat and the juices are clear • Drink safe, always drink bottled or tap water. NEVER drink from a lake, river or stream.
WASH YOUR HANDS • Before eating or drinking, and after going to the toilet, touching raw meat and any contact with animals (open farms), always wash your hands thoroughly • If you do not have safe clean water, bring hand wipes or gels to clean your hands
• Antibacterial hand gels and wipes are not a substitute for washing hands, as gels and wipes may not adequately remove germs and bugs in the way that running water can. However, using such gels after hand washing with soap and water may reduce the risk of picking up these infections. By being aware and taking some simple steps, we can all help to avoid illness and enjoy a fun day out!
• Bring soap for handwashing and make sure you dry your hands properly afterwards
