There are also hints and tips on home safety and preparing for the colder months, especially for older people (see page 9). With its beautiful golden hues, autumn has arrived and the Halloween midterm break is not far away. Don’t be concerned about how to keep the family entertained, as there are plenty of spooky fun activities and events lined up (see pages 14 and 15). Don’t forget to pull off the back cover and keep your recycling guide. We are always getting questions about what can be recycled and hopefully this guide will help. Our residents have a genuine interest in recycling, which might explain why we are, yet again, the top recycling council area in Northern Ireland (last quarter 2017/18). GREEN FLAGS FOR OUR PARKS We are extremely proud to announce that we now have 17 Green Flag sites in our Borough. Belmont Cemetery in Antrim, was awarded a Green Flag for the first time with Antrim Castle Gardens and Sentry Hill receiving their third Green Heritage Award. Community Green Flags have been awarded to Toome Linear Walk, Rathfern Social Activity Centre and Ballyeaston Ruin. The Community Green Flag Award highlights the efforts of volunteers at each of these sites. Well done to all involved. Jordanstown Loughshore Park, including Hazelbank Park and Gideonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Green, as well as Mill Race Trail, Valley Park, Wallace Park, Ballynure Cemetery, Kilbride Cemetery, Mallusk Cemetery, Rashee Cemetery, Lilian Bland Community Park, Newtownabbey Way and Sixmilewater Park, all retained their Green Flag Award for another year.

A BLOOMING BEAUTIFUL BOROUGH Have you noticed the beautiful colour around our Borough this summer? Brightly coloured flowerbeds, a new splash of colour on the walls in Whiteabbey, additional planters and hanging baskets, all to make our Borough a nicer place to live and visit. After consultation with Elected Members and traders in the local towns and villages, we identified areas to brighten up. In addition to these areas, we have also upgraded many of our roundabouts across the Borough. This will hopefully provide a more welcoming first impression. Like what you see? AUTISM FRIENDLY COUNCIL It is very important to us that all of our residents can enjoy our facilities and services. To help make this happen we are continually making improvements to our facilities and events to support those with additional needs.

Autism training

With the support of Autism NI, we are on our way to achieving the Autism Impact Award to help us become an autism friendly council. This award promotes our support for those with additional needs in our Borough. What is the Autism Impact Award all about? • Frontline staff throughout the Council will complete a training course in the fundamentals of autism • Autism champions will be based at each of our venues to help make them more welcoming and accessible, to those with autism and their families • Autism action plans will be designed specifically for each venue, to ensure we do our best. JAM Card welcome here…In addition to the autism award, Council staff recently completed JAM Card Training. JAM Card means ‘just a minute’ and helps our staff to assist customers who experience communication barriers due to their disability.

MORE ACCESSIBILITY IN OUR BOROUGH GYMS AND SWIMMING POOLS

OUR PARKS

Our gyms and swimming pools are accessible for everyone and each of our fitness suites have pieces of equipment which can be adapted for wheelchair users.

Inclusive play park equipment is available at 32 of our Council play parks. Our play park at V36, Newtownabbey features a Wheelchair Accessible Swing, Wheelchair Roundabout and Sensory Play elements. Our new play park at Antrim Loughshore Park features a Wheelchair Accessible Boat, Wheelchair Accessible Swing and Roundabout.

As part of the gym equipment replacement programme we aim to provide a high percentage of Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) accredited gym equipment. All of our leisure centres have a wheelchair accessible lift and the swimming pools also have a hoist to help those with a disability in and out of the pool. SWIMMING LESSONS Little Stars at the Valley Leisure Centre is suitable for children age 5-10 with learning difficulties. Sharks swimming lessons are held in Sixmile Leisure Centre and are open to children with disabilities. Our adult swimming classes are open to all abilities and if required, one-to-one coaching is also available. CLASSES Our Every Body Active Coaches organise sport specific sessions for those with additional needs. We also offer classes such as ‘Wheelie Active’, Boccia and Inclusive Golf. DISABILITY SPORTS HUBS Disability Sports Hubs were launched earlier this year at the Valley Leisure Centre, Allen Park and Crumlin Leisure Centre. The Hubs have disability sports equipment including twelve sports wheelchairs, one rugby wheelchair, three track racers, five hand cycles, four tandems, three trikes, three boccia sets and one sensory activity pack.

MEMBERSHIP We offer a concessionary rate of £16 for our monthly leisure membership. If you require a carer to help you when you are at one of our leisure centres, your carer can accompany you free of charge. SUCCESS Our leisure membership is a great way to live a healthier and active lifestyle, whether it is to lose weight, tone up or simply get more active. We love hearing about your weight loss results and the positive impact becoming a member has had on you all. We recently caught up with one of our residents from Crumlin, Shanagh Close, who lost an amazing six stone in a year and is a great inspiration for anyone wanting to start.

What are your favourite activities to keep fit and active?

How long have you been a member of Crumlin Leisure Centre?

What was your biggest challenge in reaching your goal?

I became a member of Crumlin Leisure Centre in January 2016. Originally, I just paid each time I visited the gym or went to a class rather than taking out a membership. I did not know if I could do the exercise, if I would like it or if I would be able to fit it in with work and family life. I quickly realised that I enjoyed the gym and the first class I went to was Zumba on a Wednesday night, so then I started the monthly individual membership after a couple of weeks as it was better value for money than pay as you go.

In terms of my weight loss journey, I very rarely struggled with going to the classes or the gym. I found it enjoyable with great overall benefits for me physically and mentally, in terms of having time out from working full time and looking after a family.

Initially I went to the gym at 9pm during the week and Zumba on Wednesday nights. I enjoyed both of these activities. I then started Core Toning on a Friday evening and a 15 15 15 class on Monday evenings, which I still do now. When I can, I do Circuits on Wednesday nights, Saturday mornings or Sunday mornings. I try to do three classes per week and maybe one hour at the gym. I tend to push myself more in the class environment, as opposed to the gym.

In terms of my biggest challenge, it would probably be maintaining self-control and moderating what I ate. Also learning to eat when I was hungry, as opposed to eating when I was happy, sad, stressed or to fill time.

What type of membership do you have? I started off with the individual membership, then in May 2018 I changed to a MORE family membership. I have a husband, a 15 year old son and a 10 year old daughter, so the family membership was better value for money. My husband, son and I all use the gym together at Crumlin and the whole family use Antrim Forum for swimming.

What would be your advice for anyone wanting to lose weight?

Crumlin Leisure Centre offers a great choice of classes during the day, evenings and weekends. The great opening times make it easier for me to exercise a minimum of 3 times per week around my busy schedule. The leisure centre staff are also friendly and approachable and when I started in January 2016, weighing 17 stone and being very unfit, the staff made me feel very welcome and supported me when I started my fitness journey. The staff are knowledgeable, answered any questions I had informatively and reassured me to do what I could and work at my own pace.

I would advise them to make small changes to calorie intake and level of exercise. It is also important to set realistic goals. I started with wanting to lose 7lbs, then 1 stone and so on. I also joined a local slimming group which was also a great support.

AGE FRIENDLY ANTRIM AND NEWTOWNABBEY Did you know that Monday 1 October was International Day of Older Persons? With people living and working longer itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important that we support our older residents within the Borough.

HOME SAFETY Safety in the home is important to everyone but living with a diagnosis of dementia can add to the concern of keeping people safe in their own home.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE TO PEOPLEâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S LIVES

Free home safety equipment can also be provided and referrals can be made for free smoke alarms and expert fire advice, from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service. This free equipment is subject to eligibility.

Did you know that people with dementia and those over 65 years are entitled to free home safety checks by our Home Safety Officer? As well as providing tips and advice on all aspects of home safety, our officers can make referrals to other services on issues such as heating and home energy (see page 19 for more information). For those living with dementia, tailored advice will be given to families and carers to make their home safer. Simple tips such as writing notes about turning off electrical appliances and gas cookers, or having emergency phone numbers in large print beside the telephone, all help in some way to create a safer environment.

BE WINTER WISE The winter months will soon be creeping in and for some older residents it can be hard to stay warm and well. Winter Wise is packed full of tips and advice on how to keep warm and well throughout the winter months. It also includes information on how to winterproof your home, including steps to decrease the risk of flooding or pipes freezing. There are also some tips on what you can do to be prepared for an emergency, as well as a full list of emergency contacts.

A BOROUGH’S TRIBUTE The autumn of 2018 marks another milestone in the ongoing Decade of Centenaries, when we reflect upon the end of the Great War on 11 November 1918. The Great War, otherwise known as the First World War, was a global war, originating in Europe, that lasted from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918. This war had a huge impact on, not only the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough, but across Northern Ireland. As such, this Centenary is being marked throughout the UK in the months ahead giving communities the chance to remember and pay tribute to all those lost in the Great War.

VOICES AND VOTES: SUFFRAGE AND REPRESENTATION OF THE PEOPLE, 1832–1928 Museum at The Mill Thursday 4 – Saturday 27 October To mark the centenary of The Representation of the People Act 1918, PRONI has developed an exhibition exploring the history of suffrage from a local perspective, particularly the struggle for women’s representation. This exhibition includes unique archival material which highlights some of the people who championed change.

The Council programme aims to educate, inform and promote understanding of this historical event and the impact it had for the people of our Borough. Be careful where you buy... Many retailers have voluntarily signed up to a scheme which puts costumes through more robust flammability tests and carry a ‘CE’ mark to prove they are safe. Don’t forget your pet! While Halloween is a fun time for all the family, it can be traumatic for our pets. Welcoming trick or treaters means lots of door opening, bell ringing, scary costumes and screaming kids. Keep your pets safe by putting them in a separate part of the house. Even pets who are kept indoors may experience intense anxiety with the loud bangs of the fireworks, so if you think more will be needed, speak to your vet about options to calm your pet.

COMMUNITY NOTICE BOARD THE DUNANNEY CENTRE Situated in the heart of Rathcoole, the Dunanney Centre is a bustling community hub offering high quality training and meeting facilities to the local community. Council recently took over the management of this facility from the Rathcoole Churches Community Group and held a fun day to celebrate the occasion. Just a 15 minute drive from Belfast City Centre, the Dunanney Centre is easily accessible and is home to a number of organisations including Citizen’s Advice Bureau, SureStart, Bryson FutureSkills, Newtownabbey Family Connections, Bytes Project and Newtownabbey Arts and Cultural Network. Each of these organisations offer support to the people of Rathcoole and working in partnership with them means the Dunanney Centre is ideally located to host a range of training and events.

Then switching to modern cloth nappies could be the answer. The Council has teamed up with Nappy Advice Service NI to offer a FREE, two week trial of cloth nappy kits for up to 30 families across the Borough.

HOUSEHOLD RECYCLING CENTRES Have you seen the litter-loathing puppet about? Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the star of a new anti-litter campaign across Northern Ireland which has featured on TV adverts, radio, billboards and across social media. The campaign from Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful and its Live Here Love Here programme, features the puppet who pops up out of nowhere giving litter louts a proper puppet telling off, in true Northern Ireland style. Last year over 141 tonnes of litter were collected, costing a staggering ÂŁ45.5m on street cleansing. Like many members of the public who take pride in our province, this puppet gets very aggravated when he sees people being careless with their rubbish! Then why not help to clean up your local area by doing a litter pick? Council can provide equipment such as litter pickers, gloves, bags and hi-vis vests free of charge.

We have five fantastic recycling facilities across the Borough where you can recycle a range of items including old kitchen appliances, clothing and textiles, mobile phones and even batteries. Long gone are the days when these centres were regarded as a dump and attracted all kinds of household waste. At each of our recycling centres you will find clearly labelled bays for all types of recyclables. Please separate your waste types before you arrive and our staff will be on hand to help direct you to the right place. In order to further reduce the amount of materials going to landfill, the Council also work in partnership with East Belfast Mission. The charity refurbish some of the bulky items that have been brought to the centres and make them available for sale in their shops, Restore. Are you living in a cold home? Do you struggle to keep your home warm during the winter months? The Council offers free tailored advice on how to heat your home in an efficient and cost effective way, that keeps you warm and ensures energy bills are manageable.

Buying home heating oil can be a costly purchase. Affording large quantities, whilst more cost effective, can be difficult and using smaller oil drums, can end up costing more per litre.

One way to help budget is to buy oil stamps through the Council’s Oil Stamp Savings Scheme. This scheme allows you to spread the cost of fuel and buy larger quantities, making it a more cost effective option.

Simply purchase £5 oil stamps from our Council premises or local retailers and place them on the free savings card. You can then use the card as payment, or part payment, at any of our participating oil companies.

OUR OSCAR WORTHY BOROUGH We were delighted that our Borough was recently chosen as one of the locations for the filming of ‘Normal People’, a romantic drama starring Academy Award nominees Liam Neeson and Lesley Manville. Carnmoney Cemetery and Jordanstown Loughshore Park will both feature in this Ireland-set film which is due to hit our cinema screens in 2020. Brian Falconer, Producer commented; “It has been such an honour to feature Carnmoney Cemetery in our film Normal People. When we were searching for a cemetery location, we wanted somewhere beautiful and when our location manager showed us pictures of Carnmoney, it was a unanimous decision. For us it is often difficult to secure locations, but dealing with Antrim and Newtownabbey Council, the process has been so straightforward and enjoyable. So thank you for your hospitality and your help, I cannot wait for you all to see the final production.”

GATEWAY CENTRE BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES You may have noticed or heard about the fantastic new play area at Antrim Lough Shore Park, with equipment for all children and young people to use. The play area is the first step in the development of the new Gateway Centre, which is going to enhance leisure and tourism on the shores of Lough Neagh. As part of this development, there are opportunities for hospitality and leisure based businesses to take advantage of this popular, key location in our Borough. We are now seeking a tenant to provide a quality catering service to customers visiting the Lough Neagh Gateway Centre. The restaurant will offer high quality food and beverages, with an emphasis on a menu that takes advantage of local fresh produce. We are also looking for proposals from organisations to provide high quality activities/outdoor pursuits from the new Gateway Centre, at Antrim Lough Shore Park. These tender opportunities will be available for applications from November 2018.
