I am also pleased with the new opening hours at Antrim Forum, one of our fantastic Leisure Centres. Early birds can now use the facilities from 6.15am Monday to Friday and from 9am on Sunday mornings (see page 4). Once again this is another improvement for our residents and visitors. I would encourage you all to take a look at the wide range of summer events and activities taking place this year (see pages 9-25). We have plenty of events, summer schemes and theatre shows to keep everyone entertained. Our flagship summer production is Show Boat and I would encourage everyone to get your tickets booked for this unique musical (see back page). As my year as Mayor comes to an end in June, I would like to wish you and your family an enjoyable summer. It has been my privilege to serve as your First Citizen of our wonderful Borough. The Council wants to help residents to have healthier and more active lifestyles by transforming our approach to leisure facilities and activities in the Borough.

We want you to have access to modern leisure facilities, a wide range of activities and classes, opportunities to realise sporting ambitions, or simply just have fun being fitter. MORE PEOPLE

SIMPLY STROLLING ‘Simply Strolling’ is a series of gentle walks designed for those with mobility restrictions, people returning to exercise or for rehabilitation. You will also have the opportunity to pick up Nordic Walking, as your confidence and ability improves. The short walks start from the Antrim Forum at 9.30am every Wednesday. Each week costs £1.50 which includes tea or coffee after your walk. If you would like to take part, just turn up at the Antrim Forum on the morning of the walk to register.

What is it all about? It’s about getting more people, more active, more often. We think we can do this by looking at: • Pricing - how much we charge • Programmes - how, what, where and when we provide activities

ANTRIM FORUM NEW OPENING TIMES Early risers now have the choice for an earlier start at Antrim Forum... Opening hours have now changed at Antrim Forum. We are opening an hour earlier during the week, Monday through to Friday at 6.15am. On Sundays we are open from 9am instead of 2pm and Saturday morning opening remains the same at 9.30am.

TRIPLESTACK WHEELIE BOXES - UPDATE We are excited to let you know that the next phase of triplestack wheelie boxes and smaller landfill bins has been delivered to residents in the Glengormley area.

Triplestack recyclable items include:

New streamlined 180 litre bins for household waste will replace your current black bin. This is to encourage you to recycle more and also reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, which is great news for our environment.

Once your bin is collected, the garden waste is then composted and used across our Borough as soil. By using your brown bin for your garden waste instead of your black bin, you are helping reduce the amount of waste that is landfilled and therefore saving lots of money.

GO GREENER WITH YOUR BARBECUES Now that the summer months and better weather is here, so is barbecuing season! Here are some top tips on recycling and how you can do your bit to reduce waste: • Sauce and condiments: Simply scrape out any remaining contents into your brown bin, give it a quick rinse and recycle the empty plastic bottle. • Empty drinks cans, tin foil and tin foil trays: Once these are rinsed clean, they can be recycled. • Glass jars and glass bottles with the metal caps/ lids attached: These are 100% recyclable and can be taken to any of our five recycling facilities (Antrim) or placed in your recycling boxes (Newtownabbey).

• Leftover food and used napkins: Feed your brown bin with these items through your food caddy. This will be collected to help make compost through the Council’s brown bin service. • Write a shopping list: Due to our weather, barbecues are usually unplanned which means we can make last minute shopping choices and have the tendency to over buy. A shopping list will help reduce the amount of left over food. • Love Food Hate Waste: don’t forget you can heat up your cooked meats or use your left over salads the next day for lunch.

The Council’s Health and Wellbeing team has been working with members of the Townparks North Community Association to set up a bulk buying oil club for the Townparks North Area.

During the summer, research shows that cases of food poisoning almost double due to the undercooking of food and the contamination of food by bacteria. Here are some simple steps to make sure your food is properly cooked:

In an oil club, orders for domestic heating oil are co-ordinated in an area which enables the club to negotiate discounts with oil suppliers, by buying in bulk. This makes heating oil more affordable, helps to improve the health and wellbeing of the community and make a real difference to people’s everyday lives. This will be the eighth oil club established within the Antrim and Newtownabbey Council area.

SCLATA DESIGN Sclata Design is the work of local Newtownabbey man, Paul Neeson. Paul took up calligraphy as a child and served as a sign writer before learning the skills of writing signs by hand. In recent years, Paul began making slate tableware as gifts for friends and started getting orders for personalised slate items. Paul has taken part in two Council-run programmes, Bricks & Clicks and Build Your Own Website. Paul said: “Both courses have really helped my business to grow in a short time and I’m really looking forward to seeing the results of the new website. The help and assistance I have received through the Council programmes mean I would have no hesitation in recommending them to other local businesses.”

ANTRIM AND NEWTOWNABBEY LOCAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN We wish to thank everyone who took part in our Preferred Options Paper (POP) public consultation. The launch of this document provided an opportunity for you to have your say on the space we live in and influence how it will look in the future. We enjoyed meeting residents during our Borough wide drop-in sessions, public exhibitions and also hearing your feedback through our online questionnaire. This is the first formal document to be produced in the preparation of the new Local Development Plan 2030 (LDP). Your feedback will help inform the first part of our Local Developent Plan. It will set out at a strategic level where new developments will happen, which provides confidence to investors and communities alike. It will also contain new planning policy for the Borough. The next stage, known as the Local Policies Plan, will contain more detail on settlement limits, town centre boundaries, zonings and designations. We look forward to working with you throughout the plan preparation process.

LOCAL GROUPS RECEIVE FUNDING

ANTRIM PUTS ITS BEST FOOT FORWARD Models of all ages strutted their stuff at Antrim’s Spring Fashion Show in Castle Mall on Saturday 8 April. The fashion show was funded by the Council and Department for Communities.

Audiences were treated to a stunning selection of the latest high street style trends including colours, cuts, patterns, textiles and silhouettes.

Over 60 local community and voluntary groups from across the Borough have received funding from the Council through the Community Development and Festivals Grant Aid Programme for 2017-18. This funding is awarded to help groups organise a range of community projects including community festivals, summer schemes and outings for older and vulnerable people to help overcome social isolation. Community and voluntary groups work tirelessly to help improve the areas they live in and ensure residents have positive experiences with access to activities and events that might otherwise not be possible without this grant funding. A Small Grants Programme is also open throughout the year, subject to budget availability. The Department for Communities in partnership with the Council, funds this Grant Aid Programme.

DISABILITY ACTION PLAN We have been working on preparing a new Disability Action Plan (DAP) to set out how we can make a real difference to those with disabilities.
