Christmas really is all about bringing people together and I am thrilled by how we are all working together as one Borough from Crumlin to Carnmoney and Rathcoole to Randalstown. I have had the opportunity and honour to meet many of you and see first-hand the great work going on in our community to make our Borough a more vibrant and appealing place to live, work and visit. We have more information about some of the exciting projects that are planned across the Borough in this issue. This has been an amazing year for sport and I am looking forward to the new Council’s first Sports Awards which will take place in February and will honour those who have excelled and made an invaluable contribution to their sport. Inside you will see how you can nominate your sporting hero. May I take this opportunity to wish all of you a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year. SPORTS AWARDS: NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN Nominations are now open for the first Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Sports Awards, taking place in February 2017. Do you know someone in the Borough that has excelled in their sport this year or has been an outstanding role model to their club or team mates? Is there someone in your local club that you simply could not do without? If so, then why not nominate them and honour their achievements at the Sports Awards. The prestigious awards ceremony will highlight the invaluable work carried out by the many hundreds of volunteers and professionals involved in sport within our Borough. Organised by the Antrim and Newtownabbey Sports Awards Group, the event will acknowledge and reward sporting achievement in the following seven categories:

Featuring the latest in software technology, these simulators include an impressive 4k screen resolution as well as head measurement technology and full analysis of a player’s swing and club head performance. These results are delivered instantaneously and can be saved and emailed directly to your personal mailbox. Local PGA Golf Professional, Peter McCarroll is already enjoying using the new simulators for his coaching programmes; “The technology with the new

simulators is amazing and incredibly accurate. Using these to develop and coach, allows a player to view their entire shot, from impact to how the ball bounces visually on screen, giving a detailed analysis of the entire flight of the ball.” With the long, dark winter nights ahead and the inevitable bad weather that the season brings, there’s no excuse now for not getting in your golfing practice. MACMILLAN CANCER ‘MOVE MORE’ PROGRAMME In the last edition of Borough Life we introduced our new Move More Programme, which is being delivered in partnership with Macmillan Cancer and aims to ensure that everyone living with and beyond cancer is aware of the benefits of physical activity. Alan McCausland, our Move More co-ordinator has been in post for several months and is working across the Borough to assist people with a cancer diagnosis to access physical activities. As well as providing personalised and tailored support, Alan is encouraging and motivating those to get involved and sustain an active lifestyle. In addition to offering a series of exercise classes across the Borough, the programme provides opportunities for one-to-one fitness as well as other ways of being physically active, such as taking part in gardening classes. The programme is open to all those with a cancer diagnosis, no matter what stage of your journey you are on and can be done on a self-referral basis or through your consultant or GP.

One of the participants is 71 year old Jim Reid from Templepatrick. Three years ago Jim, who was a keen cyclist, stopped exercising after receiving the devastating news that he had cancer. Jim received a referral from his doctor two years ago and is still attending the Cancer Rehabilitation class; “The classes have been a lifeline for me and it’s thanks to Alan’s encouragement and motivation that I have continued with the classes. It helped build my fitness again to allow me to get back on my bike.” Jim adds; “I would encourage anyone in a similar situation to talk to Alan and find out how you can get involved in a level of physical activity that suits you.” Jim is now going through the Macmillan Programme which offers him ongoing support and further opportunities to get involved in activities to help sustain an active lifestyle. Research shows that keeping active can prevent cancer coming back after treatment, as well as overcoming many of the debilitating side effects associated with the illness.

MOVE MORE IN ACTION Three years ago, the Council introduced a Cancer Rehabilitation class at Antrim Forum, also taken by Alan. Originally a pilot programme, these classes were well attended and showed a need for a more permanent cancer related physical activity programme within the Borough.

LOVE FOOD, HATE WASTE: TURKEY Over the Christmas period there is always lots of food that goes to waste, so here’s a few ideas for leftover turkey. Not only will it taste good but it will save you money and help to reduce food waste. These ideas will get you started but why not tweet us yours? @ANBorough

TURKEY & VEGETABLE SOUP

CREAMY TURKEY & HAM STROGANOFF

• 200g cooked turkey

• 1tbsp oil

• 200g cooked potatoes, roughly chopped

• 300g mushrooms, sliced

• 400g cooked vegetables, such as carrots, broccoli, green beans and turnip

• 1 tsp paprika

• Hot water

• 100g leftover cooked gammon, diced

• 2 vegetable stock cubes

• 100g chestnuts, halved (optional)

• Black pepper

• 300ml soured cream

• 300g leftover roast turkey, diced

Place the turkey, potatoes and vegetables in a saucepan and cover with hot water.

Add in the vegetable stock cubes and mix well. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer gently for about 10 minutes or until heated through.

Heat the oil in a large frying pan and fry the mushrooms and paprika for 2-3 minutes. Add the turkey, gammon and chestnuts and cook for a further 2-3 minutes.

Stir in the soured cream and simmer gently for 1-2 minutes. Season to taste. Serve with rice or pasta.

Season with black pepper and serve.

Don’t forget - your turkey bones can be recycled in your brown bin!

RECYCLE THIS CHRISTMAS Having a Christmas clear-out to make room for the tree or new furniture to ‘spruce’ the place up for the festive season? The Council is urging residents to make use of the reuse containers at any of our five recycling centres. Christmas is known as the time for giving and that applies to donating items of furniture to good causes, rather than sending them to landfill. BE FANTASTIC, RECYCLE YOUR PLASTIC Recycling one tonne of plastic bottles saves 750kg of carbon. This is the equivalent of travelling nearly 2,500 miles in an average car! There are many plastic items in your home that can be recycled using your recycling bin or box. These include; • plastic bottles e.g. shampoo bottles • plastic pots e.g. yoghurt pots • plastic egg cartons • empty plastic roll-on deodorants • plastic tubs e.g. butter tubs

Items including furniture suites, wardrobes, tables and chairs are now collected on a regular basis from the Council reuse containers by a local charity. The charity then repairs and refurbishes items in their workshop before selling them on through the Re:store shops. Don’t forget to recycle your Christmas tree once the festive period is over. Your tree can be cut up and put into your brown bin to help reduce waste going to landfill.

COMMUNITY PLANNING: YOUR FUTURE IS IN YOUR HANDS

Domestic abuse is ongoing control over a person in a relationship which takes many forms; physical, emotional, psychological, financial or sexual abuse. It can also involve the threat of violence to control another’s behaviour or actions. Abuse can occur in all sorts of relationships but is more common between spouses, couples in intimate relationships, family and co-habitants. It can happen regardless of age, gender, social class, ethnicity, disability or lifestyle. Antrim and Newtownabbey Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) is delivering a new Domestic Abuse Training and Awareness Raising Programme. The programme will raise awareness of the support available for people experiencing abuse and is delivered in schools, businesses and communities.

FUNDING PROGRAMME FOR OUR BOROUGH Your Borough is made up of seven District Electoral Area’s (DEA) and each DEA has been allocated £100,000 to support the development of projects that help make a difference. The funding is driven by your Elected Members and there are over 100 initiatives ranging from small short term to larger long term projects. Some highlights include… Growing Our Communities Funding has been allocated to develop new allotments in Rathcoole, Crumlin and Toomebridge as well as a new community garden in Randalstown.

Schools A number of schools across the Borough will benefit from funding to develop and open up their facilities for community use. For example an ICT suite at Abbots Cross Primary School and an outdoor learning area at Whiteabbey Primary School. Looking to the Future We are committed to investigating the possibility of a walking loop in Threemilewater Park, the development of Paradise Walk (between Parkgate and Templepatrick) and the need for a community facility in the Longlands area. Support will also be provided to the communities of Mallusk and Aldergrove to develop improvement plans for their areas.

GATEWAY TO THE LOUGH Antrim’s popular Lough Shore Park, the gateway to Lough Neagh, is to benefit from a £2.3m investment in a new visitor centre. Complementing the Council’s five star touring caravan park, nearby Antrim Castle Gardens and Antrim Forum, the plans for Lough Shore Park will ensure it remains a popular destination for residents and visitors. The new centre will feature a dining area on the first floor with stunning views of picturesque Lough Neagh. Downstairs, a flexible space will cater for a variety of activities and events. Lough Neagh rescue, a vital resource for the whole of the Lough, will also find a new home in the

Gateway Centre. It’s not just the building that’s new, many of our young people in the Borough took part in a consultation to help design an exciting new play area. Other attractions in the Park may include a new bandstand and public art. It is expected the play area will be open next summer with the new centre opening in 2018.

Benefitting from the support of a pilot programme called Bricks and Clicks, funded by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council to help aspiring businesses, Teresa’s coffee shop business has gone from strength to strength.

SAFE TYRES SAVE LIVES As budgets are stretched, the sale of part-worn tyres has increased as they are usually between £15-£20 cheaper. However, before you buy make sure you know the facts.

GET FOOD SAFETY WRAPPED UP THIS CHRISTMAS

Tyres which are part worn must have a minimum tread of 2mm, be marked and must not have any of the following defects when fully inflated: • Any cuts bigger than 25mm • Any internal lump, bulge or tear • Any of the ply or cord exposed or any puncture damage which has not been properly repaired If you purchase a part-worn tyre, always ask for the tyre to be fully inflated so you can check for defects. You should also check for any signs of ageing such as splits and never buy a part worn tyre which has had a puncture repair on the sidewall. Council officers regularly visit retailers of part worn tyres to check that tyre safety regulations are being met and to raise awareness of the legal requirements.

Tasty food is a big part of making the festive season special, so get your food safety wrapped up this Christmas and don’t fall foul of the germs. Here’s some top tips for your turkey: • When shopping, put the fresh bird in a separate bag away from other cooked foods and fresh produce. This will prevent any leakage which can cause cross-contamination. • Don’t let other food come into contact with raw meat, poultry, fish or unwashed vegetables - store raw meat and poultry on the bottom shelf of the fridge. • If you are buying a fresh turkey, buy it as close to Christmas as possible, bring it home quickly and store it in the fridge. If you are buying a frozen turkey, put it into the freezer without delay and keep it there until you are ready to defrost it. • Don’t wash your turkey - this can spread germs to your sink and kitchen surfaces. • Make sure your turkey is fully defrosted before cooking. You’ll know it’s completely thawed when the body is soft, the legs can be moved and there are no ice crystals inside the cavity. • The safest way to defrost your turkey is on the bottom shelf of the fridge on a plate or tray. • It takes 24 hours to defrost every 2-2.5kgs of turkey, so it can take up to 3 days to defrost a frozen 7.5kg turkey. Make sure you check the weight on the label and give yourself enough time. • Before serving make sure there is no pink meat left - the juices should run clear when the thickest part of the leg and breast meat are pierced with a clean fork or skewer. • Always wash your hands after handling raw meat.

CAFÉ CULTURE COMING To support local retailers and provide a welcome boost to the vibrancy of our towns and villages, Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is encouraging a café culture through Pavement Cafés.

With the colder weather on its way, it is important to start thinking about how to stay warm this winter. A satisfactory level of heating is 20ºC in the living room and 18ºC in other occupied rooms such as bedrooms. Living in a cold home can have serious implications on the health and wellbeing of vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children and people living with disabilities or chronic illness.

In October, new legislation came into effect in Northern Ireland which allows food businesses to apply for a licence if they want to place tables and chairs outside their premises. BLOOMING BRILLIANT! In the August edition of Borough Life we brought you great news about our success in this year’s prestigious Green Flag Awards. There was yet more good news for the Borough recently, as Council was delighted to receive recognition in several categories in this year’s Translink Ulster in Bloom competition. Antrim Town was awarded second place in the large town category with Randalstown also securing second place in the small town category. In the village section, Ballynure received a well-deserved third place with nearby Ballyeaston claiming third place in the small village category. This annual horticultural competition encourages cities, towns and villages right across Northern Ireland to

EXCITING PLANS FOR THE STEEPLE SITE Known locally as the Steeple, the Round Tower is one of Antrim’s most recognisable and historic sites. Originally built around the 10th century as a bell-tower for protection from raiders, it is one of the finest towers of its kind in Ireland. The Steeple site which once housed the former Council offices, also includes a large house and stable block as well as an area of parkland. Exciting development plans have been revealed which will balance both the historical significance and the needs of the local community. These include refurbishing and opening up the Round Tower to visitors, redeveloping the Steeple House as a multi-purpose community building and creating small business units and flexible community space within the stable block. To further enhance the offer at the Steeple site it is proposed to develop a 3G pitch on the Antrim Grammar site which would be a school and community shared facility. The proposed project is expected to cost in the region of £6.7m, which is to be offset through external funding, will be delivered in two phases.

ALLOTMENTS:

ARE YOU INTERESTED? Council operates a number of allotment sites across the Borough including Ballyearl, Greystone in Antrim and New Mossley, which offer over 160 plots to local residents and community groups. In addition to this, there are also a number of community and privately operated sites across the Borough. Far removed from the flat cap image of the past, allotments are very sociable and a great way to meet fellow gardeners, relax and stay fit and active. If you are interested in gardening but don’t have room at home, renting an allotment is an inexpensive way of gardening in your own space. Grow your own fruit and vegetables, try out different varieties and get involved in this growing past time with fellow gardeners exchanging tips and ideas. Interested? Over the next 18 months, Council has committed to invest over £200,000 in allotment provision right across the Borough, however we are keen to know in what areas there is greatest demand.

BEST KEPT GARDEN 2016 The Borough’s first ever Best Kept Garden competition was introduced this summer. Entries were received from across the Borough showcasing a huge variety of styles, designs and creativity. Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor John Scott added; “On behalf of the judging panel, I would like to congratulate all the worthy winners and runners up. We were very impressed with the inspiring landscapes, planting and beautiful blooms and had a difficult job selecting the winning entries.”

Next year’s competition will open in early spring and include a number of new categories including the Best Kept Garden in each of the District Electoral Areas (DEAs) and a Best Kept School category. So why not start planning your garden for next year? You could be a winner!
