Mayor’s Message 14

Out and About With the Mayor

18

Please take time to read this winter edition of Borough Life as it’s one of your Council’s ways of keeping you up to date with local news and events. It’s hard to believe that we are nearing the end of another year, and I know it has been a very trying year for many of our residents. As the weather gets colder and nights get darker, we have important information on pages 28 and 29 about how you might cope with the colder winter months, and how you could ensure your home is safe and warm.

Our Commitment to Plant One Million Trees

We are hearing more and more every day about the effects of climate change on our world. Be sure to read page 18 where you will find out about our ambition to plant one million trees across the Borough. This is part of our bid to tackle climate change….we really need your support to help us achieve it.

22

It’s great that we are finally able to have public events again, and on pages 24 and 25 you will see information about what is planned across the Borough for Halloween and Christmas. I look forward to seeing many of you when I am out at these events.

Business & Jobs

Mayor’s Inaugral Dinner Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council held the Inaugural Dinner for Mayor, Councillor Billy Webb MBE JP, on Friday 24 September at the Dunadry Hotel. The Mayor is passionate about promoting the Borough to investors and recognising members of the local community. He was pleased to invite local business representatives and guests to the occasion as well as Elected Members, friends, family and colleagues. The Mayor was also joined by the Vice LordLieutenant for County Antrim, Mrs Miranda Gordon and High Sheriff for County Antrim, Mrs Sue Pinkerton.

Speaking at the event, the Mayor said; “It is an honour to serve as Mayor of this fantastic Borough. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first few months in office and have met some truly inspirational people. I remain committed to using my term in office to support residents and businesses to rebuild and come back stronger after the pandemic and pledge to do all that I can to promote Antrim and Newtownabbey as a wonderful place to live in, work in, invest in and visit.” The event boosted the Mayor’s fundraising for his two charities: Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice and Women’s Aid Antrim, Ballymena, Carrickfergus, Larne and Newtownabbey, raising almost £1,500.

Showcasing Our Borough Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council was delighted to accept an invitation to attend the UK Government’s Northern Ireland Office, in partnership with the Department of International Trade and Invest NI. By attending the event in London, Council were able to positively showcase local talent. This included recent achievements and future growth projections by two local partners, Randox Ltd and Ulster University who also

attended the event. The Council’s attendance also helped to profile the Borough’s ambitions for the collective £1bn Belfast Region City Deal Investment in the form of jobs, research, innovation and state of the art specialist business facilities. There was also much discussion about the UK Government Levelling Up Fund for which the Council has two multimillion pound bids submitted for regeneration projects in Antrim and Glengormley.

Crematorium Works have commenced on the new Crematorium on Doagh Road in Newtownabbey which is due for completion in December 2022. The £5m investment will provide a state-of-the-art facility for families and mourners including a memorial garden and

columbarium for the storage of urns. The building will nestle in a parkland setting, with walking paths within a landscaped area creating a sense of privacy and calm. A tree-lined avenue will sweep down through the site around a pond which will face on

to the single-storey building. As well as wildflower meadows, the site will also feature seating areas for reflection. To help manage traffic efficiently, a right hand turn lane will be installed from the A8 direction.

INFORMATION FOR RESIDENTS

Antrim’s Historic- Doagh Steeple Crematorium Road,Site Newtownabbey One of Antrim’s most historic sites will soon be refurbished to its former glory following a fire in 2019. Work will soon commence on Steeple House, a Grade B+ listed building which was once home to the former Antrim Borough Council. Built in 1827, Steeple House sits within a 17 acre parkland site which also includes the Antrim Round Tower, a scheduled monument which served as a bell-tower and place of refuge from raiders and is one of only two complete towers remaining in Northern Ireland.

The works will include restoring the house to its pre-fire condition, maintaining the character and architecture of the historic building. Plans for the wider park include new interpretive signage and pathways to promote greater access to the site, showcasing the Round Tower as a unique feature. Plans are also being developed by a third party to develop a section of the site as a healthcare facility.

Skate 100 is One Jump Closer It’s almost time to get your skates on as work is nearing completion at Skate 100 – our new Urban Sports Park at V36. Set to be one of the largest in the UK, the Urban Sports Park will be able to accommodate a broad diversity of skaters, BMXers and inline skaters, enabling advanced skaters to be challenged and beginners to develop their skills. Skate 100, which has been named as part of the Council’s Centenary programme commemorating 100 years of Northern Ireland, will provide a dynamic community gathering space where young people can make new friends and improve their social circle while enjoying some physical activity. The Park will consist of a variety of features such as raised banks and curbs, metal rails, a pocket corner and table top. Skateboarding made its debut as an Olympic sport in Tokyo this year and after watching 13 year old Sky Brown become Britain’s youngest Olympic medallist, we’re looking forward to seeing our local skateboarders try out the waterfall, volcano and clamshell when the park opens in just a few months. Skate 100 is a project supported by the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). Match-funding for this project has been provided by The Executive Office, Northern Ireland and the Department of Rural and Community Development, Ireland.

Reduce Your Rubbish! We want to say a huge thank you for helping us to remain one of the top recycling councils in Northern Ireland. Whilst we might be great at recycling, we also generate some of the highest levels of waste across all council areas. So as well as making an effort to recycle, we also need to try and reduce the amount of waste we generate.

The festive season is just around the corner and as Christmas is all about giving, we’re asking you to give a little more back to the environment by recycling and reusing as much as you can.

Here’s a reminder of the Christmas waste you can recycle at home: • Christmas cards (no embellishments, glitter or foil) • Chocolate and biscuit boxes – tin and plastic

Here are a few tips to help you: Plan

• Foil cases from mince pies and foil roasting trays

think ahead and plan your meals for the week and keep an ‘eat me first’ section in your fridge to minimise food waste

• All food waste

Re-love visit your local charity shop. You would be amazed at some of the quality items that are donated

Reduce shop smart and buy products with little or no packaging where possible

Reuse switch to reusable versions of everyday items such as water bottles and shopping bags. Use a lunch box instead of sandwich bags

Upcycle give your furniture a new lease of life with a lick of paint or some decorative techniques

Repair if something breaks try repairing it rather than replacing it.

16

|

Borough Life October 2021

• Cardboard boxes from toys, online deliveries etc

Don’t forget to dispose of your real Christmas tree at any of our five Household Recycling Centres, where they will be bulked and sent for composting.

Waste & Recycling

A Second Chance For Pre-Loved Toys Do you have some pre-loved toys in need of a new home? Christmas is a costly time for everyone and so often families have many unwanted toys and gifts that are no longer used. Our Christmas Community Toy Scheme is the perfect opportunity to donate these items so they can be enjoyed by other children. This year we are working with a number of community organisations who are providing drop-off points and will arrange for the toys to be distributed to those in need.

Fairtrade We are proud to be a Fairtrade Borough.

For those unwanted toys in good condition, you can also drop them off in the Christmas Toy Collection containers at any of our five Household Recycling Centres. These items will then be collected by Habitat for Humanity who sort, clean and sell them on at low prices in their ReStore shops.

Fairtrade is about giving the people who produce the things you buy a fair price for their work. Often only a tiny bit of the money you pay for something goes to the person who actually made it, particularly when items are imported from poorer countries.

Not only does our Christmas Community Toy Scheme ensure more families have an enjoyable Christmas but it also helps to reduce waste, keeping more items away from landfill.

We support Fairtrade by: • buying Fairtrade products whenever possible • using tea and coffee products with the Fairtrade mark at meetings and civic events

For more information including donation points and suitable items visit antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk/ christmastoyscheme

• encouraging our catering contractors to use Fairtrade products • integrating Fairtrade issues into our Corporate Plan • raising awareness about Fairtrade among our employees and residents.

Interested in supporting Fairtrade? If you would be interested in helping to promote Fairtrade throughout the Borough, contact us so we can keep you up to date on campaigns and events that are taking place.

Our Commitment to Plant One Million Trees… Can You Help? As part of the Council’s plan to tackle climate change and reduce our carbon emissions, a commitment has recently been made to plant one million native trees across the Borough. This ambitious plan will take a huge effort from the Council and other organisations as well as community and voluntary groups, businesses, residents, schools and clubs...so we need your help! Planting the trees is the important part but if we record the trees planted, together we can watch as the numbers increase month by month.

18

|

Borough Life October 2021

Why are trees important? Trees remove carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change, from the atmosphere and store the carbon in their trunks, stems, leaves, roots and in the soil. Our aim for this project is to record the location, species and who carried out the planting of the trees. This information will help us to keep track of how much carbon the trees are storing over their lifetime. Some trees are better for the environment

than others and it’s important the right type of tree is planted to help climate change. Visit our webpage for a list of trees we recommend are planted.

Get involved Have you planted a tree and want to include it towards our one million target? Then be sure to record your planting by visiting antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk/ plantatree We are grateful to everyone who is doing their bit to help us tackle climate change.

Leisure & Lifestyle

Keep Active on Your Travels More and more people are choosing to ditch the car and walk, wheel or cycle to get about. With many of us rediscovering, or maybe even discovering for the first time, the beauty that lies within our local outdoor environment, we want to encourage residents to choose the active travel option more often. Thanks to recent Government funding, we have been able to enhance some of our walking routes and provide a number of new pathways in areas such as New Mossley, Valley Park, Crumlin Glen, Threemilewater Park and Rea’s Wood. We want to provide even more opportunities for people of all abilities to safely travel and so

we are continuing to invest in our natural environment, further opening up some of our most popular sites within the Borough. Choosing to travel by foot or on a bike provides great health benefits, boosting both your physical and mental health. Just 30 minutes of physical activity a day can increase your heart and lung fitness, while reducing the risk of other preventable illnesses which place further burden on our health service. As well as benefitting your health, leaving the car at home eases traffic congestion and reduces the amount of harmful gases in the air contributing to climate change. So next time you need to travel locally, why not choose the active option.

Get On Your Bike! Getting on your bike is even more attractive thanks to our new bike stands which you might have seen pop up across the Borough. These new bespoke stands, which have been installed in 34 locations including town centres, parks and open spaces, provide a safe place for cyclists to lock up their bikes while out and about. Encouraging you to ditch the car for a greener way of travelling, the bike stands have been funded through the Government’s Recovery Fund. Keep an eye out for our bicycle hire pilot scheme which is being developed in Antrim town and will provide bikes for hire at key locations around the town. Our inclusive hand cycles, trikes and tandems are also available to hire from Antrim Forum and Valley Leisure Centre.

Frozen Pipes To help avoid frozen pipes there are some simple measures you can put in place:

• Ensure pipes are well insulated • Locate your stop valve and make sure

everyone in the property knows where it is and how to turn it off

• Consider what you would do if you did lose

your water supply for a prolonged period of time. You need to have a contingency plan

To view the booklet visit antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk/winterwise To request a copy T. 0300 123 4568 E. info@antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk

• If you own a business and are shutting for a

holiday period, you should make plans in the event of cold weather i.e. set your heating timer, have someone check the premises regularly

• Have the number of a plumber who knows

where your property is and who is prepared to attend at night if needed

• Make sure you have insurance to cover your property in the event of a burst pipe.

You can keep the heat in your home and costs down with insulation by doing the following:

• fitting draught-proofing to seal any gaps around windows and doors

• insulating lofts, cavity walls, hot water cylinders and pipes.
