DESIGNING YOUR GARDEN FROM SCRATCH

Tutor: Vanessa Drew Date: Sat 15 June Time: 10am–4pm Cost: £20 & £18 (Concession) Age: 16 years+ Do you have an area of garden that looks a bit neglected or is your garden a blank canvas? If you don’t know where to start, Vanessa, who has been designing gardens for almost 20 years, will give you ideas on choosing a layout and style to suit the site and look at getting the balance between hard landscaping products, grass and planting in order to achieve colour and harmony and reduce maintenance. Please bring along photos and measurements of your garden and we will look at possible solutions to transform it.

Join our Park Rangers on this half-day workshop focussing on the amazing world of moths and butterflies. The morning will start with an interactive session on identifying the moths captured in the Robinsons trap the previous night, followed by submitting the findings and records. The rest of the day will focus on the ‘diurnal lepidopterans’ – butterflies. This will involve a brief indoor presentation followed by a guided excursion around the grounds identifying some of our beautiful butterflies.

Children between the ages of 6 and 12 are invited to join our Rangers on an activity packed and fun-filled half-day workshop focussing on the amazing world of insects. Join us for a scratch around Antrim Castle Gardens Grounds to see and learn about the many different mini beasts that live right under our noses. P.S. Adults welcome too!

Everyone wants a neat and tidy garden. Hedges are trimmed or removed and weeds don’t get a look in. However, weeds, ivy and wild flowers support a lot of wildlife, so how can we strike a balance to keep everybody happy? If everyone allowed a small area to go wild, it would make all the difference, so if you would like to know how to do your bit for local wildlife, this is the workshop for you!

MAKE YOUR OWN FAMILY TREE

Tutor: Madeline McGreevy Date: Sat 22 June Cost: £20 & £18 (Concession) Time: 10am–3pm Age: 16 years+ Participants will paint a 24cm wooden tree with hearts to represent up to five family members. As this dries, a background will be created on which the tree will be attached. Embellishments will be added as a finishing touch before your family tree is placed within a box frame.

Drawing inspiration from the natural world, participants will experiment with hand painting and printing techniques using natural plant materials, collage and colour to create their own artwork on Irish linen. The significance of linen and the folklore surrounding the plant materials used in the workshop will be discussed as part of the process. All materials will be provided including a frame to mount and display the artwork.

The workshop will start with a talk on the tradition of botanical art and of flowers and gardens in general. Then the group will spread out to choose their favourite plants and flowers within the formal garden, and receive help and advice along the way. Ever noticed all the weird and wonderful stuff that is washed up on the beach? Well, in this workshop Sian will show you how to make some beautiful craft pieces using simple items from pieces of coloured glass to weathered wood regularly found on our coastlines.

This fun and dynamic class is designed for those who are considering A-Level Art or entering 3rd level Art & Design Institutions. The course is also suitable for teenagers interested in discovering their artistic potential and developing their artistic skills. The class will provide a relaxing and structured environment learning to draw and paint with various mediums such as watercolour, oil and acrylic. Each student will be given the opportunity to work from observation with Still Life Studio set ups as well as working from a life model, and 3D structures will come from their chosen theme.
