Excitement is growing this year about our Home Spun Musical Theatre course production of one of the biggest musicals of all time, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music. Over 20 weeks students will work with the creative team under the direction of Musical Director Jonathan McGuinness to create a magical production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s final collaboration and destined to become the World’s most beloved musical. The fully staged production will open at Theatre at The Mill on Sunday 2 July and with 6 performances running through until Saturday 6 July. Tchaikovsky’s most ambitious opera contains some of his greatest music and is a powerful study of destructive obsession. In Tchaikovsky’s intense opera of obsession and the supernatural, Gherman is caught between the woman he loves and a destructive fixation. The Queen of Spades is based on a short story by Pushkin, and comes to the Royal Opera House in a new production that has already garnered five star reviews in Amsterdam. The production is set in 1890, the year of the opera’s premiere. In his study, Tchaikovsky imagines the opera into life as his own story, its characters giving voice to his unfulfilled desires. Aleksandrs Antonenko and Eva-Maria Westbroek head the cast and Royal Opera Chorus, conducted by Antonio Pappano, Music Director of The Royal Opera. This is an engrossing portrayal of a tortured creative artist and a gripping piece of gothic storytelling.

Richard Eyre’s beautiful production provides the perfect setting for Verdi’s opera about a courtesan who sacrifices all for love. Pablo Picasso is one of the greatest artists of all time - and right up until his death in 1973 he was the most prolific of artists. Many films have dealt with these later years - the art, the affairs and the wide circle of friends. But where did this all begin? What made Picasso in the first place? Too long ignored, it is time to look at the early years of Picasso; the upbringing and the learning that led to his extraordinary achievements. Three cities play a key role: Malaga, Barcelona and Paris. Young Picasso visits each and explores their influence on Picasso, focusing on specific artworks from these early years. The film thus explains how this young artist acquired his craft. Looking carefully at two key early periods - the so-called Blue Period and Rose Period - the film takes us all the way to 1907 and the creation of a critical painting in the history of art - Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. It was a painting that shocked the art world but changed it irrevocably. Picasso was only 25 years old. Working closely with all three Picasso Museums in Malaga, Barcelona and Paris this film explains how he rose to great heights.

At its heart are virtuoso roles for the lovers Basilio and Kitri. Carlos Acosta chose this joyful classic for his first production for The Royal Ballet. His vibrant staging brings together the whole Company in such roles as exuberant villagers, passionate gypsies and even fantasy flowers. The story follows Don Quixote’s picaresque journey to do deeds in honour of his imaginary noble lady, Dulcinea. Sunny, charming, funny and touching – Don Quixote is a ballet as full of uplifting emotion as it is of astonishing ballet technique.

James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favourite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece... and a rare modern classic. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both enchanting and touching. The story follows a baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.

The Queen's Island and Victoria Male Choir were established over 100 years ago with the Queen's Island forming in 1912 and the Victoria forming in 1916. However, after many years performing separately, they amalgamated in 1974. Over the years the choir has been privileged to lead the praise at bowler's and harvest thanksgiving services in various churches as well as participating in fund raising concerts in support of many charities. Michael Fabiano stars as Faust, with Diana Damrau as his beloved Marguerite and Erwin Schrott as the diabolical Méphistophélès. Virtuoso leading roles, a large chorus, sensational sets, ballet and an ecstatic finale make this the epitome of theatrical spectacle – the lavish scale of French grand opera is wonderfully in evidence in this production by David McVicar, set in 1870s Paris. Sarah’s Key is one of two film screenings in the Borough to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2019. Each year on 27 January, the world marks Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD), which provides an opportunity for everyone to learn the lessons from the Holocaust and on this day we remember the millions who were murdered. One of the darkest moments in French history occurred in 1942 Paris when French officials rounded up over 10,000 Jews and placed them in local camps. Eventually over 8,000 were sent off to German concentration camps. As 10-year old Sarah and her family are arrested, she hides her younger brother in a closet. After realising she is not allowed to go home, Sarah does whatever she can to get back to her brother. In 2009, a journalist named Julia is on assignment to write a story on the deported Jews in 1942. When she moves into her father-in-law's childhood apartment, she realises it once belonged to the Strazynski family, and their daughter Sarah. This is a screening in partnership with UK Jewish Film.

It all started as a joke when Leesa Harker wrote a Belfast-based spoof of Fifty Shades of Grey. Very soon, it went viral and had 29,000 followers! Following phenomenal, sell-out success across the land Maggie Muff, Big Sally Ann and Mr Red White and Blue are returning again in April 2019. If we were to say this is a laugh-a-minute evening we would be telling lies – it's literally nonstop laughter! How to get here The Old Courthouse is located at Market Square in the heart of Antrim town centre. The building is located within a pedestrian priority zone with the main approach on foot along lower High Street or alternatively from the Castle Mall car park near to Castle Way. There are a number of car parking options close by including the Castle Mall car park, on-street parking along High Street (restricted during daytime hours) and a public car park on the Lough Road accessed via Halls Bridge/Sixmilewater boardwalk.

Illuminating the Aviary By Melanie Owens

Thurs 2 May â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Sat 29 June Melanie Owens is the Head of English at Ulidia Integrated College and has been teaching for 13 years. However it was only four years ago that she begin to draw. Melanie describes the inspiration behind her exhibition in her own words: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;To say I have slumbered through life is not entirely true; yet I have at times hibernated, leaving dreams dormant, covered with the dust and decay of a career focused life. Living on high alert for many years, the need to achieve, perform yet not fully knowing who I am. Caged by my own achievements and ambitions. It was not until all thoughts stopped, words could not be read, that I realised I had come to the end of myself and the cage door needed to be opened. Out of the darkness came the light of a 4B, the beauty of finding light in strange places. As the pen light began to draw suddenly the birds began to emerge from their Aviary. Our flight towards fearless freedom had begun.'

Flax Fields

Thurs 4 April – Sat 27 April Master printmaker Josephine McCormick has created a series of artworks, some of which are embedded with the sound of flax being woven via QR codes. Not only can the viewer admire the stunning selection of etchings and cyanotypes, but they can also appreciate the hypnotic, rhythmic sound of the linen being woven.

ENGAGE

Inspired by linen and flax as the fabric of Ireland, every artwork created by Josephine McCormick in Flax Field is unique. The embedding of QR codes which allows the viewer to experience the ‘sound’ of the work is a technique developed exclusively by the artist. The work on show is a mixture of etchings and cyanotypes. Her work has represented Northern Ireland at international exhibitions in Luxembourg, Japan, Munich and Melbourne and is in private collections in America, Japan, Germany and France. Jordanstown Art Club Annual Exhibition Thurs 7 March – Sat 30 March

Maurice Oliphant is a local Ballyclare artist who, after retiring from the commercial world of graphic design, has spent his retirement doing what he loves best - painting. Maurice’s repertoire includes a range of paintings focusing on The Ballyclare Mayfair and recently he has been specialising in portraiture and painting classic cars. This exhibition will include portraits of local sportsmen such as George Best, Joey Dunlop and Karl Frampton as well as world-renowned celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and John Lennon.

Jordanstown Art Club has been successfully running for over 30 years. The club comprises keen amateur artists living in Newtownabbey and its neighbouring areas who meet to paint together and share their skills and techniques. The Club produces traditional landscapes, seascapes and still life along with modern acrylics, oils, pastels, watercolours and mixed media paintings. Always striving to improve and innovate, members are encouraged by monthly demonstrations given by professional artists and workshops where they can expand their knowledge of the arts.

Jean Massereene (1883-1937), wife of the 12th Viscount Massereene, was the last Viscountess to reside at Antrim Castle, the fire of 1922 bringing to an end its role as the official seat of the Massereenes. A forgotten leader of the interwar era and famous for her beauty, ghost-hunting, and political causes, this retrospective draws on archived photographs, letters and newspaper articles to exhibit the many facets of her character: philanthropist, militant, spiritualist, fashion icon, and socialite.

Her insight and intuitive recognition of beauty, colour and light expresses a deep sense of purpose and meaningful emotions of feelings and long lasting impressions.

Glengormley Art Club have been meeting in Glengormley High School during term time on a weekly basis for the past 25 years. We are all amateur artists, working in various types of medium ranging from oils, watercolours, pastels and acrylics to wool and felt-work, which is evident in this exhibition. We welcome new members to the Art Club and can be found on Facebook if anyone is interested in doing so.

Hidden Beauty - Plant Life Under the Microscope By Steve Lowry

Tue 30 Apr â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Sun 23 June We are used to admiring the flowers and foliage in our gardens without realizing the hidden wonders of the structure of plants when viewed under the microscope. In this exhibition Steve Lowry reveals the detailed structure of plant buds, leaves and leaf hairs, wood, stems and roots when viewed using a light microscope. The range of textures is made even more spectacular by using polarized light to create a rainbow of stunning colours.

The Spiritual Journey of a West Country Artist By Melody Hawtin

Tue 25 June â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Sun 25 Aug In England there is the smallest of National Parks called Exmoor, and this is where my journey began. At the age of nine, roaming with my little spaniel, I recreated the beauty I saw with photographs and oil paint. Colour and faith became my comfort, celebration, restoration and Hope. My paintings and the poetry I write are inspired by The Romantics, especially J.M.W. Turner who also painted on Exmoor, and have been exhibited in New York, London and Florence as well as in my gallery in the Somerset village of Porlock.

Spring Exhibition By Artists Drawn Together

ENGAGE

Ned Jackson Smyth, Penny Brewell and Helen Bradbury are three established artists living in Northern Ireland specializing in sculpture, printmaking and painting. ‘Home’ explores the physical, emotional and social relationships that each artist has with the concept of home. The exhibition collectively shows the individual and interconnected thinking of each artist, demonstrated through their different disciplines and in their relationship with each other.

This is an eclectic group of artists from across the country, united by a love of art through fun and friendship, tutored by Janice Lightowler. They range in age from 11 to 80+ and include experienced artists and those who have had the opportunity to unleash their talent. Each artist is taught in their own style, subject and medium, including watercolour, oil on canvas, pastel, and even mixed media. Watch out for the artists working in the gallery Saturdays to Tuesdays during the exhibition.

Storms and Twilight Skies By Ciaran Magill

Tue 8 Jan – Sun 17 Feb Ciaran Magill’s solo exhibition explores rural landscapes before and after storms, from daylight through to twilight. Eerie scenes mingle with gentle romantic depictions. Some of the paintings also explore an elevated perspective on the landscape, inspired by the dynamic depth of space that was introduced by the Chinese painters during the era of the Sung Dynasty Landscape Movement. As a celebration of 10 years since his graduation from Ulster University, the show presents some of Ciaran’s favourite works on the upper floor, with new work downstairs.
