This course is aimed at those with some experience of their digital camera and looking to get more out of it. During the classes you will use creative projects to learn about shooting in manual modes, long exposures and night time photography, as well as getting better portraits and improving your photography skills as a whole. We’ll look at how to edit and share your photographs to really get the best out of them. This class is perfect for anyone with a DSLR camera and a tripod is useful though not essential.

These harvesting baskets were made in vast numbers around the shores of Lough Neagh primarily at Gawley’s Gate, Aghagallon and Aghalee. No experience necessary so come along and keep this tradition alive. All materials and tools will be provided.

A Natural Progression Harry Boyd

Thurs 6 Oct - Sun 30 Oct This exhibition looks at two of the key events associated with Ireland in 1916, the Easter Rising and The Battle of The Somme and sets them within their international context along with considering how these big events have been commemorated and remembered, and at the impact and legacy they have had for local communities. This is being delivered through the Mid-Antrim Museum Service with the Causeway Museum Service.

Harry is a local artist – Antrim ‘born and bred’. Always an observer of nature and its wonder, Harry developed a talent for drawing and perspective in his youth. Having applied this skill to the teaching of Technology and Design, then retiring early as a natural progression Harry pursued his desire to paint in water colour. He began with the perspectives and textures of stone buildings. Fifteen years on his repertoire extends to the beauty of the countryside, the challenge of portraiture and the ‘capturing’ of African animals on paper. With time his work has become a more contemplative art. This is reflected in an ‘easier’ style, a more confident interpretation, wonderful backgrounds and some really exciting work.

Three Ulster Artists exhibition Wed 26 Oct – Sat 26 Nov

Once again Three Ulster Artists have come together to provide a variety of works in oils, acrylics and watercolours. Manson Blair has been painting for many years and has a great affinity for the Irish landscape. He seeks to record images of Ireland that are fast disappearing and finds much inspiration in the rugged landscapes and seascapes of the western seaboard. His work is displayed in a number of Irish Art Galleries. In recent years he has been elected to the Ulster Watercolour Society and the Arts Society of Ulster. David Long paints in oils and water colour. His subjects include landscape, seascapes, still lives, flowers and portraiture. He served his apprenticeship in damask designing and studied at the Belfast College of Art. He has been painting professionally since 1967 and he is a past President of the Ulster Water Colour Society. Special commissions have included the large oil of the “Tall Ship’s Visit” to Belfast in 1991 for the Harbour Office. Tom Stephenson began painting ‘The Whimsical World of Thomas Joseph’ in 2000, a collection

based on sheep with humorous titles. These prints are sold in vast numbers throughout the British Isles and Europe. Tom also paints in a contemporary style with an amusing take on the buildings and animals in the West of Ireland. Tom has been a Laing competition London finalist twice and won several Royal Ulster Academy prizes. He shows his work in a number of galleries in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. He also runs his own gallery in Carrickfergus at the courtyard complex.

Thur 4 Aug - Fri 23 Sept

Glengormley Art Club has been running for over 25 years and attracts novice, amateur and experienced artists living in Newtownabbey and its surrounding areas. The majority of works are paintings and drawings of landscapes, seascapes, still life and portraits using oils, watercolours, pastels, acrylics, pencil and mixed media.

This exhibition consists of a number of the lithograph brush drawings Louis Le Brocquy created as illustrations to Thomas Kinsella’s 1969 translation of the Irish legend the Táin Bo Cuailnge (The Cattle Raid of Cooley) published by Dolmen Press. The Táin is the centre-piece of the eighth-century Ulster cycle of heroic tales. The book is illustrated with 31 lithograph brush drawings by le Brocquy, 15 of which are in this exhibition. The Táin has been hailed by scholars as the greatest Irish Artist’s Book of the twentieth century. Scholars have noted that these illustrations with their precise, pared-down mark making had a great influence on much of le Brocquy’s later work, and thus have argued that the Dolmen commission was central to the artist’s career.

Curated by Paul Croft, this exhibition is the second in a series of four exchange shows that have been organized between Aberystwyth and Changsha during the last two years. Most of the prints are by members of the Hunan Printmaking Association and the exhibition also includes prints by students from Changsha Central South University, Changsha Normal University and from the Art School at Hunan Univeristy of Science and Technology in Xiangtan. Displaying a wide range of images, subject matter and techniques, the work in the show represents three generations of artists – Masters, Seniors and Juniors – all of whom have worked in very different times, to create a fascinating snapshot of contemporary printmaking from this part of China

Tues 15 Nov – Sat 14 Jan An Exhibition of Contemporary Craft touring from Flow Gallery, London The White Show depicts the strength of the colour white, exploring the feelings and connotations that shades of white can create – from purity to emptiness. The works on display, from ceramics to jewellery, glass to wood, all examine shape, express mark-making and texture within the broad tonal palette that is white. This exhibition of international craft features artists Hans Henning Pederson, Lisa Stockham, Mizuyo Yamashita and Astrid Keller and is curated by Yvonna Demczynska of Flow Gallery, Notting Hill, London.
