Alan Bennett is regarded as Britain's most critically respected and most popular living playwright. This production of two of his Talking Heads will show just how accomplished Bennett is. A Chip in The Sugar tells the story of mild, late middle-aged Graham Whittaker, who finds life becoming complicated as his widowed mother, with whom he still lives, reunites with a dubious old flame named Frank Turnbull. The second half of this double-bill, A Lady of Letters, introduces us to Irene Ruddock, a single, middle-aged woman living near Bradford - who is not afraid to speak, or rather to write, her mind.

By the Edwardian era, the McKinney’s well-appointed house, Sentry Hill, was evidence of the prosperity and social status they attained through their successful farming in South Antrim. The McKinney’s could not have foreseen the flood of carnage and destruction that would sweep across the European continent in 1914. It was a tide of effects that would be felt across the island of Ireland and the rest of the world. Sentry Hill would not escape untouched as young Tom McKinney, the heir to the farm, joined the Royal Fusiliers in 1914 and died on July 19th 1916 as a result of his injuries at the Battle of the Somme. The play Tom is his story, based on his letters and journals.

RIVAL UNDERTAKERS DISTURB THE PEACE IN BELFAST…AGAIN. For generations, Catholic undertakers in Belfast have buried Catholics and Protestant undertakers have buried Protestants. So you’d think now that we have peace (mostly), we could stick to these rules? But no. When veteran undertaker, Gerry McSorely, finds his Catholic customers being stolen by young Protestant rival, Basil Gray, an undertaking war breaks out. It gets worse when young Polish woman, Irena Bukowski’s cut-price, newage, interdenominational funeral home usurps them both. Joined by a host of outrageous characters including; the hilarious cleaner Mrs Johnston, Paramilitary leader Graham Stitt (who gives a must-see eulogy for his Da – Gusty), Gerry McSorely and Simon the struggling undertaking apprentice.

Dangerous desires, family secrets and political intrigues twist through every moment of daring choreography in Kenneth MacMillan’s ballet inspired by true events. Mayerling is a classic of the Royal Ballet repertory, with its emotional depth, haunting imagery, and one of the most demanding roles ever created for a male dancer. Kenneth MacMillan choreographed a complex work around the psychologically tormented heir to the Habsburg Empire, Crown Prince Rudolf. From the ballet’s start, the glamour of the AustroHungarian court is contrasted with undercurrents of sexual and political intrigue that drive the story to its violent climax in a double suicide. The large cast allows for impressive ensembles in addition to the ballet's many solos of distinctive character and pas de deux of disturbing eroticism. This ballet, bursting with intensity, madness and passion, proves that sometimes the truth is more scandalous than fiction.

Troilus and Cressida swear they will always be true to one another. But in the seventh year of the siege of Troy their innocence is tested with tragic consequences. Troilus is much distracted from these military concerns by his love for Cressida, the daughter of a Trojan who has defected to the Greek camp. The young lovers are eagerly assisted by Cressida's uncle Pandarus, who acts as their go-between. However, after only one night together they are parted when Cressida is sent to join her father in the Greek camp. Almost immediately she betrays Troilus with the Greek Diomedes and, discovering this, Troilus is plunged into despair. With the fall of Troy certain, Troilus vows revenge on Achilles.

With an investigating officer as incompetent as D.I. Twigg, there are plenty of laughs as the murders begin to pile up. Pogue’s Entry cottage is preserved in its original state as a tribute to Dr Irvine and a memorial park is located at the junction of Castle Way and Church Street, Antrim. It Only Takes a Minute is a superb show focusing on the life of Michelle, a young female with Aspergers. It is a fast-paced, one woman show that features a stand out performance by Anna Kyle, one of Northern Irelands emerging disabled actresses, alongside the songs of Take That. The piece begins with 26 year old Michelle receiving her diagnosis. She then, through a series of flashbacks, re-lives a number of scenes in her life. Take That become Michelle's confidants, mentors and best friends in the solace of her bedroom. The band, however, soon become an obsession with the lyrics at times taken all too literally. This leads to a culmination of events that result in meltdown and a period where Michelle is forced to learn more about herself and the world around her. The piece is a mix of fun, excitement, uncertainty and sometimes an all too real overload of emotion.

From 1848-1851, he explored the Himalayan ranges of east Nepal and Sikkim, discovering a plethora of new plants, the seeds of which he sent to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The seedlings from some of these found their way on to Ireland and these wonderful plants inspired Seamus O’Brien to lead four expeditions ‘In the Footsteps of Joseph Dalton Hooker’. Thurs 29 Nov - Thurs 20 Dec "On occasions, the Orange Order has been presented as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;demonicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and its members portrayed as extremists belonging to an institution that has no meaningful place in civic society". Dr Edward Cooke. Dr Edward Cooke wants to show through the photographic images in this exhibition the individual members of the Orange and other Loyal Orders as ordinary people who parade in order to demonstrate their faith, their allegiance to their nation and the importance of their history, music, culture and community.

The exhibition will display paintings from a group of passionate Chinese artists in Belfast, by using brush and ink to present a variety of painting styles. The first is a traditional literati style, freehand ink and wash painting for landscape, flowers and birds as an expression of personal aesthetic. Second, a meticulous style utilising very precise details to create a more decorative effect. Finally the artists use other types of painting media to present Chinese culture and nature attractions in Northern Ireland.

It is clear this affinity with the Carrickfergus Museum & Civic Centre poet was also evident in the mid Antrim area. Shaped by the migration of Lowland Scots into Ulster during 10 january—13 february 2019 Larne Museum & Arts Centre the Plantation period, local rural communities espoused cultural, religious and linguistic links with Scotland 18 february—5 march 2019 voiced by a distinctive rural poets known collectively as the rhyming weavers. ‘Robert Burns: Hand to the Plough’ is a touring exhibition by the Mid-Antrim Heritage Partnership (Mid and East Antrim with Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Councils) to mark the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 in association with The Linen Hall Library, Belfast and the Ulster University.

30 Aug - Sat 29 Sept This exhibition showcases the work of the club through a selection of photographic prints. Membersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; varied interests and abilities are illustrated through a range of subjects including landscapes, portraiture and the natural world. This photographic club is over fifty years old and provides an outlet for local photographers, many displaying work of international standard.

An exhibition of new work by Emma Whitehead. Emerging from her recent training with the British Horological Institute in February 2018, Emma uses her learning in the adaptation of mechanical watch movements to explore the concepts of time spent and time given. Creating a host of insects, swarming across a sea of Irish linen she references the 18th and 19th century obsession with time intertwined with the rise of industrialisation, and explores our relationship with the manufacture of what was previously handmade.

Glengormley Art Club Annual Exhibition Thurs 29 Nov - Sat 5 Jan 2019 Glengormley Art Club has been running for over 25 years and attracts novice, amateur and experienced artists living in Newtownabbey and its surrounding areas. The majority of works are paintings and drawings of landscapes, seascapes, still life and portraits using oils, watercolours, pastels, acrylics pencil and mixed media.

ENGAGE

Led by clients of New Horizons Antrim, The Art of Recovery shows artistic work in various mediums including abstract art, fine art, photography and metal work sculpture from a range of clients within the Action Mental Health service. Drawing on the theme of mental health recovery, The Art of Recovery showcases the wide range of talent that exists within the New Horizons service and combines client experience, creative talent and positive recovery to inspire others on their recovery journey.

Tue 16 Oct - Sat 24 Nov Jordanstown Art Club was established some thirty years ago, and there are currently just over thirty members, comprising keen amateur artists living in and around the Newtownabbey and Carrickfergus area. This will be the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first exhibition at Clotworthy House and will comprise a mix of traditional landscapes, seascapes and still life in a variety of mediums; pastels, watercolour, acrylics, pen and wash and mixed media.

Summer Exhibition

The New World Of Thomas Joseph

From his gallery/gift shop, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Courtyard Galleryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in Carrickfergus, Tom has developed his distinctive artwork from the famous original Whimsical World of Thomas Joseph paintings of sheep to new directions and subject areas. This exhibition will be an opportunity for the sheep to strut their stuff again for Spinning Yarns and also for Tom to showcase some of his new work.

Antrim Camera Club was founded in 1984 and began its life in Clotworthy House, so it is great to have them return for their first exhibition here for many years. The club now meets in Parkhall Integrated College, Antrim, and is affiliated to the Northern Ireland Photographic Alliance.

Fri 31 Aug - Sat 15 Sept Emma explores the journeys we take through space. Using found and recycled objects she reanimates them by creating mixed media embroideries that invite the viewer to imagine the journey our material possessions take once weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve thrown them away. Hand stitched in silk on Irish Linen produced in Northern Ireland at Flax Mill Textiles, Dungiven.

ENGAGE

These embroideries are created using merino fibre and recycled elements including; acrylic, yarn, velvet, beads, metal, glass, paper, circuit boards and watch movements.

Former Antrim Times photographer John McIlwaine has photographed a wide variety of subjects over the years, but his burning passion is sport. Having covered everything from rugby and football to motorbike racing, he is especially renowned for his coverage of GAA and won Best Action Sports Photograph of the Year at the Northern Ireland Press Photographers Association annual competition in 2013 for the adjacent image. Now semi-retired, he still photographs sport for his website, the Saffron Gael, covering Antrim GAA.

International Graphic Editions Selected print works by local and international artists

Tue 6 Nov - Sat 5 Jan In their first collaborative project with Northern Irish printmakers, Prism Print International, a collective and forum for cross-cultural exchange through fine art printmaking and international exchange exhibitions have linked up with Belfast Print Workshop (BPW) to present this exhibition showcasing ambitious and excellent work from across the spectrum of printmaking techniques. BPW is the oldest printmakers collective in Northern Ireland. Over the last 40 years they have supported the development of local artists and continue to provide a connection between Belfast and the global arts community through residencies and exchanges.

New Adventures in WIFI Linen Song By Gary Shaw

Tue 31 July - Wed 29 Aug A former pupil of Parkhall High School in Antrim, this show sees Gary return to Clotworthy House where he spent his formative years browsing the art galleries and being inspired to follow a career in the arts. Promoting alternative narratives that have become the bedrock of global activism, his efforts culminated in the acclaimed ‘Cybertage’ solo exhibition in 2017. By pushing the boundaries of digital imaging and collage techniques, this challenging and provocative new work explores cultural identities and the socio-political malaise, depicting a comical, profound, nostalgic and often dystopian view of the world.

Fri 31 Aug - Sat 15 Sept René Mullin’s work focuses on place and the texture of place. Within the Irish linen mills and the textile industry of the 1800s and 1900s Ireland the workers expressed the stories of their lives in song. Communal singing at work created a camaraderie and sense of place for the workers. This work aims to reimagine the enveloping sense of place these songs provided for the linen mill workplace. The songs are illustrated and surface printed on Irish linen in a contemporary fashion evocative of Rene’s established minimal style and fresh lyricism.
