Contemporary British Watercolours
Visual Arts
Dwelling Place
28 January – 3 March Chris Wilson
Continues until 22 January A Touring Exhibition organised by Maidstone Museum & Bentlif Art Gallery for Maidstone Borough Council
This exhibition features three original works from twenty one contemporary artists, who all use watercolour as part of their art practice. The exhibitions challenges our usual preconceptions of what constitutes a watercolour painting, featuring abstracts, landscapes and portraits from artists as diverse as Hannah Maybank, Susie Hamilton and James Faure Walker.
Chris Wilson is an artist and sculptor based on the north Antrim coast. The rocky shoreline where he lives and works provides the bedrock for his art. The geological structure and strata of the coastline is used to create works that explore ideas of place. The works in this exhibition trace the influences and inspirations that have informed his practice over the last two decades. They are an exploration of landscape that uses the topography of maps to build relationships between the influence of man and the forms of the natural environment. The lines drawn in these pictures cross the landscape in the same way as the roads and pathways of the maps on which they are based. They employ ideas of multiple perspectives and multiple viewpoints, which suggest movement and change.

10 March – 9 April Lucy Turner
The Oriel Gallery
A series of ideas, processes and techniques are explored in this exhibition using paper in print, sculpture and book structure underpinned with the concept of local to global migration; the songs, culture identity, and memories that travel in a contemporary or recent context to pastures new. This body of work looks at the rudiments of habitation that has been left behind. Lucy Turner lives in County Down and works predominantly in the public sector with community groups to create funded public art works for both interior and exterior settings. She has won various awards and recently had a residency in New York invited by the Woman’s Studio workshop. Her printmaking practice is a combination of data grabbed from external media and personal stories collated through travel. Original prints are created through a collaboration of colour, texture and process. Recently she has been exploring book binding and paper sculpture.

Scanography
Powerful Natures 15 March – 23 April
The Conservatory Gallery
Lise McGreevey
2 February – 5 March Harry Pettis, ARPS
This selection of flower photographs explores the art and craft of image making, using a flatbed scanner in place of a camera. Some are abstract in form, or are manipulated with photo applications such as Snapseed, but most are straight forward images straight from the scanner, complete with blemishes and defects, to allow the beauty and natural form of the flowers to speak for themselves.
Powerful Natures, which was inspired by the creation of our new super council, is the latest collection created by Newtownabbey Visual Artist and Designer, Lise McGreevy. This eclectic, abstract body of work takes a fresh, innovative look at the natural and concrete beauty of the two boroughs. The artworks are all designed from original photographs taken by Lise on location in both Antrim and Newtownabbey boroughs and the title of the collection not only reflects the artworks, but also the joining of the two borough councils into one new stronger entity. The exhibition will be displayed in Museum at The Mill, Mossley Mill from 28 April to 28 May.

Jordanstown Art Club
Ways of Seeing: A Sense of Place 4 March - 26 March
Flax Gallery Mossley Mill
Abbey Community College has worked alongside Year 7 pupils from Kings Park and Whitehouse Primary Schools to produce this Digital Imaging and Manipulation project. The primary school pupils created and developed digital imagery using Photoshop, learning new expressive, creative and technical approaches in their artwork. The artwork is based upon landscapes and what our world may look like in 50 years’ time. The pupils have created some exceptional and progressive pieces of digital artwork and have really enjoyed the challenge of creating these images. ‘It is fantastic to see the effort, creative talent, enjoyment and new digital approaches that the primary school pupils are making in their own artistic and personal development’ Gary Armstrong, Abbey Community College.
An exhibition of artworks depicting the historic environment in Mid-Antrim.
28 January – 27 February Jordanstown Art Club has been successfully running for over 30 years. The club comprises keen amateur artists living in Newtownabbey and its neighbouring areas who meet to paint together and share their skills and techniques. The club produces traditional landscapes, seascapes and still life along with the more modern acrylics, oils, pastels, watercolour and mixed media paintings. Always striving to improve and innovate, members are encouraged by monthly demonstrations given by professional artists and workshops where they can expand their knowledge of the arts.
This exciting new touring exhibition features paintings of notable buildings and local well known scenes in the Mid and East Antrim Borough Council and Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council areas. The exhibition is the result of a community engagement initiative by Mid-Antrim Museums Service to encourage community awareness of the importance of built heritage.

Visitors can enjoy 21 pieces including work by Irish artists Gerard Dillion and Norman Wilkinson as well as contributions by local and amateur artists. The exhibition also highlights the ‘sense of place’ evoked within community groups through engagement with these works. There will be a free digital workshop for children to encourage exploration of built heritage on the 12 March 2016 from 1.00pm - 3.00pm. This workshop, delivered by Mid-Antrim Museums Service in partnership with CultureTECH, uses Minecraft to explore the built heritage and the wider historic environment in the mid-Antrim area. Places are limited and must be booked in advance by calling the Braid Museum on 028 2563 5077.

The Northern Ireland Patchwork Guild is a diverse group of people, with the common interest of fabric, traditional/modern patchwork and quilting. It exhibits regularly at various locations and meets monthly at The Ulster Folk and Transport Museum.
The exhibition was displayed in the Conservatory Gallery at Antrim Castle Gardens before coming to the Mill.
The Guild has chosen Memories as the theme for the Spring 2016 exhibition. Memories can be triggered by so many different things. Hearing a story, a song or a poem can conjure up a particular memory as can seeing a friend from the past or a certain date or event. This collection of wall hangings reflects an array of interpretations using various techniques, fibres and fabric.
