Financial Don’t let financial concerns build up, there is help and advice available. This section will give you advice on where to get that help. Challenges you may be facing: My money does not stretch far enough • Deciding between food and fuel • Low income or zero hours contracts • Statutory sick pay too low to cover costs • Not sure if you are eligible for support • Change of life circumstances e.g. new baby, bereavement, illness I suddenly have no money • Lost job or reduced hours • Lost money or unexpected expense • Disaster - flood or fire • Relationship breakdown • Money has stopped
I am waiting on a benefit decision • Made a new benefit claim • Benefit payment is delayed • Waiting on a benefit decision
Debt Advice Debt can happen to anyone. Free advice and support can help you find ways to manage your debt and reduce how much you pay each month. Benefit Advice
• Gas or electricity arrears
If you have made a new claim for benefit and are in financial hardship while you wait for your first payment, you may be entitled to an advanced payment for necessities like rent or food.
• Payday loans
Challenge a Decision
I am struggling with debt • Rent or benefit arrears
• Owe money to friends or family
What can you do? Maximise your Income If you feel you are struggling financially, the Community Advice Centre provides free and confidential advice. They can carry out a benefit check to ensure you are receiving all the money you are entitled to, especially if your circumstances have recently changed.
You can challenge a benefit decision if your benefit has been stopped/sanctioned/reduced/refused or if you have been overpaid. Remember that most benefit decisions need to be challenged within one month. Discretionary Support You may be able to get help towards short-term living expenses, repairing and replacing basic household items, travel expenses and rent. Support for Children The increased cost of living has a huge effect on families, particularly children. Increased costs can prevent some children from having the same opportunities as others, which can have a physical and mental impact on children.

Energy The cost of energy has been changing rapidly over the last 12 months and it may be causing concerns throughout the winter period. What are the challenges? I’m worried about how I can pay my bills • Deciding between what bills to pay • Keeping appliances/heating off to save money • Having to go to shopping centres/libraries to keep warm. I don’t have a working heating system • Heating system is old and parts are no longer available • Can’t afford to hire an engineer to fix heating/replace heating system • Having to use solid fuel to heat my home.
What can you do? Switching Energy Suppliers You can easily switch energy suppliers to ensure you are getting the best deal available. It’s easier than you think and important to remember the following: • Loyalty isn’t always rewarded. You may get cheaper options by changing supplier • You can switch if you are a homeowner or renting, as long as you pay the bill • Competition is good and suppliers often offer incentives for new customers • If you decide to move, there will be no interruption to your supply • It’s hassle free – your new supplier takes care of any paperwork • You can switch as often as you like – don’t forget there may be fees for leaving a fixed term contract • Contact your current supplier for contract terms – you could save money even by switching payment method.
Oil Stamp Scheme If you have oil heating, why not consider saving with the Council’s ‘Oil Stamp Scheme’. You can buy £5 oil stamps from local retailers and Council premises throughout the year to help you budget and spread your heating costs. A list of places where you can buy stamps is available on page 14. Community Bulk Buying Oil Clubs There are a number of community oil buying clubs set up in the Borough. These clubs co-ordinate orders for domestic heating oil in the local area, benefiting everyone involved by negotiating discounts for buying in bulk. The clubs are a great way of helping communities make home heating oil more affordable. Everyone within the club pays the same price per litre regardless of the quantity of oil ordered. How does it work? Once you have registered to join the club, order deadline dates are set throughout the year with members placing their order by the deadline.
Energy
9
The oil club co-ordinator negotiates the best price from a range of suppliers then arranges the supply and delivery date.
• Put a temperature card in the room. These are available from the Council’s Health and Wellbeing section and can be posted out. See page 11 for contact details.
Each householder is responsible for paying the oil supplier directly by cash, oil stamps, debit, or credit card.
Simple Tips for Energy Saving
The club members have said that it allows them to order smaller quantities more often, helps with budgeting and gives them peace of mind. See page 15 for a list of oil clubs in the Borough. Some tips on how to stay warm at home • Keep your living room warm throughout the day if you are at home and heat your bedroom before going to bed – an ideal temperature for your living room is 18-21ºC (64-70ºF) with the rest of the house around 16ºC (61ºF) • Use the thermostat timer for your heating – know how to schedule the time and most manufacturers will have help online • Set the timer on your heating to come on before you get up and switch off before you go to bed. In very cold weather, set the heating to come on earlier rather than turning the thermostat up. This means you won’t be cold while you wait for your home to heat up
10
Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council
• Turn the lights off when you leave the room • Don’t leave appliances on stand-by, switch them off • Use energy saving light bulbs • Fit a jacket on your hot water tank • Thick curtains will help keep the heat in • Turning the heating down by 1°C can reduce your fuel bill • Only boil as much water as you need in your kettle – this will save you time and energy • If possible, fill up the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher rather than running them with half loads.

Eat Well A balanced diet will help keep you warm and healthy throughout the winter. Try to make one hot meal a day for you and your family. Soups and stews are very nutritious and aren’t expensive. Eat the most nutritious diet you can afford. Batch cooking by using a slow cooker or using more efficient devices such Air Fryers and microwave ovens will help keep your cooking costs to a minimum. Simple tips • Eating regular meals will help keep your energy levels up • Hot meals and drinks will help keep you warm • Plan your meals and keep your diet as varied as possible • Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables to boost your immune system • Stock up on tinned and frozen foods, so you don’t have to go out when it’s very cold or icy • Drink more milk and eat more dairy products as these boost your immune system and help prevent colds.
