FESTIVALS { Read cd2/54

HALLOWE’EN Halloween, or Hallowe’en, is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31. Irish immigrants carried the tradition to the USA in the nineteenth century. The origin of Halloween was an ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain. The festival of Samhain was a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. The word Halloween comes from All Hallows’ Even (Evening), or the evening before "All Hallows’ Day" (or All Saints' Day). One of the most popular symbols of Halloween is a hollow pumpkin, with a candle inside. In the USA, it is commonly called a jack-o'-lantern. Children carve scary faces on the pumpkins. Costumes are other traditional custom in Halloween. Boys and girls dress up as monsters such as ghosts, skeletons, witches, devils, zombies, mummies or demons. Costumes are also based on popular characters from television shows or movies. The most popular Halloween activity is ‘trick-or-treating’. Groups of disguised children knock on the doors of different houses. They ask for sweets or cakes, saying: ‘Trick or treat?’. If people accept the ‘treat’, they give ‘little monsters’ some candies, but if they don’t accept it, children play a little joke on them. Other traditional activities in Halloween are ghost tours, bonfires, costume parties, visiting "haunted houses", reading scary stories and watching horror movies. Candy apples are a common food in Halloween. They are used as a treat, and they are made by rolling whole apples in a sticky sugar syrup, and sometimes rolling them in nuts.
