The 630 has an understated elegance which belies its massive volume and incredibly generous deck spaces. More typical of 100’ luxury yacht - for the outlay of a 60’ production motor yacht, she carries all the very best of her Lagoon pedigree, which now spans 30 years and is fast approaching 3000 vessels built. The 630 offers a choice of 2x 260 hp or 300hp engines and has tremendous fuel economy due to her low hull resistance. With a 10m beam, she has a transatlantic range, and provides a solid and stable haven both at anchor or at sea where she produces the absolute minimum of pitch and rolling.

It’s hard to imagine how a Lagoon could become any easier to sail but it’s happened. The 39 marks the start of a new generation of Lagoon designs, with even better ergonomics and rig handling systems. Already a success in the UK, where she is of a convenient size for local marinas, we have also supplied a 39 for a 3-year cruise to Australia. She’s a great-looking boat too. With more space and features than the 380 but a little less beam than the 400 S2, Lagoon really have this size category covered. The 39 brings in a radical new look, with bevelled deck edges, a cutaway bow and sharp coachroof styling. New features include an aftstepped main, a bevelled deck edge and an extra-wide aft passageway. Moving the mast position aft creates enough space for a self-tacking genoa, making upwind sailing really simple. The efficient high aspect ratio mainsail has a manageable short boom and the helm station is accessible from the cockpit or the side deck. The black Code 0 sail option massively increases sail power in light to mid-strength breezes and will get you closer to the wind than a conventional gennaker. It looks fabulous too! The cockpit has a rectangular seating area with a large composite table or an optional wood coffee table that can be interchanged with the table in the saloon. 630

Motor Yacht

Our Lagoon Brand Manager, Graham Laver explains how Lagoon, with the 630, are providing true blue water power boat cruising. “This is a boat for seeing the world, not just a boat for others to see. This is what sets it apart from its competitors who are mainly building short range, high consumption motorboats with two hulls. The 630 is for people who have done their share of fast motor boating and want to extend their horizons much, much further. I am sure it will also appeal to sailors who want guaranteed arrival times, while still enjoying the process of getting there. This

yacht combines the charm of sailing with the practicality of a motor yacht. We know from other Lagoon designs how well the interior works and as such there are no major changes apart from some cosmetic enhancements which will bring the boat closer in line with power boating expectations, while remaining highly practical. The standard engines are twin 260hp Volvos, with 300hp as an option her new owners can expect to cruise between 12 to 16 knots with the smaller engine option. With 3000 litres of fuel, she will have transatlantic capability. Under the water the boat has long shallow keels for strength

and to protect the stern gear. Following extensive tank testing, careful attention has been paid to the hull design at the aft sections to maximise efficiency and economy. Lagoon have promised that very soon, they will be adding more information about this model on their website www. lagoon-motoryachts.com and in the meantime, it is our pleasure to be showing her at the Cannes Boat Show. If you would like to book your appointment to view the revolutionary new model, please contact Graham Laver on 02380 450 000 or email lagoon@ancasta.com

Introduced in tandem with the 39, the 52 features the radical aft-stepped mast and self-tacking genoa that makes this big yacht so easily managed by the smallest of crews. She can be supplied with 3, 4, 5 or 6 cabins with as much stowage space as you could possibly need for the longest of adventures. She comes with a big choice of sail plans and options and our Ancasta commissioning team can provide further adaptations to suit. We are pleased to be supplying the first 52 to enter the World ARC, to a client who has owned many big cats before. If such a plan is on your near horizon, a factory visit is strongly recommended. When you’re sailing in tough conditions far out to sea, knowing the quality of the structure beneath your feet is reassuring indeed. Contact Graham Laver +44 (0)2380 450 000 lagoon@ancasta.com

These are the voyages of TULU, a 42’ catamaran built by Lagoon in France for Chris and Sara in 2009. The yacht featured at the Southampton Boat Show, then came back to Hamble for some custom modifications before setting off to Turkey the following spring.

Well, we did it.. We sold the big old farmhouse in Somerset in late 2009, and moved to our little house in the coastal town of Fowey, Cornwall. We bought this house 15 years ago before the town was ‘discovered’ and we are happy to call it home. The boys are happy, independent and on track having graduated and started on their respective careers in the summer of 2012, and we continue the small steps on our own journey.

Why TULU? Simple really - short, sweet, unusual, and, most importantly, the nickname of the wizened old lady who was Chris’s nanny as a child growing up in Jamaica.

Why a catamaran? Simple really - after a lifetime of cruising and racing monohulls in the UK and Asia (Fastnet/ China Sea Race for example), the attraction of a dry, flat, spacious, living on the level, steady, easy, catamaran seemed like a plan. Somewhere to live, sail and comfortably accommodate two additional crew for passages, or two couples for holidays ALL boxes ticked.

Why a Lagoon 421? Simple really - solid, stable and comfortable for downwind ocean crossings, spacious, and at 42’ long, small enough for two to handle, but at 25’ wide, a massive space to live in. The compromise of cost versus the build inflexibility of a production boat accepted and managed. Upwind performance also compromised on for magic reaching and downwind sailing. Fitted with all the equipment from generator to watermaker to aircon for comfortable living, from Digital Radar to AIS to autopilot to cruising genneker for safe and secure ocean cruising, from SSB (long range), VHF (short range) and satellite (anywhere) communications for voice, email and weather for added safety and the crucial ability to stay in touch with the people that matter.

So, what’s the plan? Simple really - we took delivery of the boat at the end of June 2010, spent two months aboard in the UK ironing out commissioning snags, and getting as many friends and family out sailing when the weather was reasonable in Poole and Fowey.

We sailed out of the Fowey estuary on 26th August 2010 bound for Fethiye in Turkey. The passage took in Gibraltar non-stop, Palma (for repairs), Trapani Sicily, Croatia, Ionian Greece, Athens via the Corinth Canal, and a mad dash across the Aegean via Khea, Paros and Symmi to arrive Fethiye on the 20th October 2010. Phew! We spent twenty months in Fethiye, cruising the incredible coasts of South West Turkey and the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. Beautiful bays and islands for cruising, excellent marinas and great facilities. Fethiye also has a great local year round community with exceptional markets, restaurants, walks and historical sites. Hard as it was to leave, it was time to say a sad farewell to our friends there at the end of July 2012, after a haul-out, new antifouling and a few minor underwater repairs/service jobs. So with the boys careers and personal lives both on track (one a doctor and one in finance), we (very proud parents of course) headed off west across the Mediterranean, and out to the Canaries for a couple of months. At the end of November 2012, we crossed the Atlantic to Barbados (how simple those 2800 nautical miles sounds when written down) with Christmas in Carlisle Bay, and then on overnight to Grenada to spend the next year cruising in the Caribbean, starting with the Windward Islands and Southern Leewards. We hauled out at the end of July in Grenada for the 2013 hurricane season and after a three month break in the UK, we were back in the water at the end of October. We headed west from Grenada at the end of November via Bonaire and Curacao, and on to Columbia for Christmas 2013. Then on to the San Blas Islands in mid January 2014 and from there to Panama. We transitted the canal on 10th/11th February 2014 and in to the Pacific Ocean. We will then cross to the Galapagos followed by the big one (3200nm) to arrive in the Marquesa Islands of French Polynesia in late March/April. We will be in the South Pacific Islands for most of the year ending up in Brisbane in November 2014 before the Cyclone season. Plans for 2015 as yet undecided... one step at a time! Having explored the coastlines of Thailand, Steve & Anna Hargreaves give us FIVE definitive reasons as to WHY people charter Lagoons… From sun worshipping holidays, to walking treks and regular skiing trips, it would be fair to say that Steve and Anna have not only enjoyed travelling all over the world, but the couple appear to have embraced most forms of recreational and relaxation experiences that can be derived from one’s annual leave! At the beginning of this year, with four friends, they left England to explore the stunning coastlines of Thailand on a chartered Lagoon 440. Upon request, they have kindly agreed to put themselves in the spotlight because, they told us, “It turned out to be one of the best holiday choices we have ever made.”

What made you decide on a sailing holiday in Thailand? “ We’d been to Thailand about 4 years ago when we chartered a 55 foot Jeanneau bare boat, which 10 of us sailed around the islands. We absolutely loved the spectacular shoreline scenery and coupled with such a wonderfully relaxing sailing experience, we were determined to return with other friends to give them a taste of what we considered to be the ultimate break ‘away from it all’“

Why did you charter a Lagoon 440? “ Having made the decision to return, we knew that we wanted a catamaran because you can get in so much closer to the beaches and obviously the big plus is, you’re also benefitting from far more spacious living accommodation. Basically, you are only ever in your cabins to sleep because it is so hot, so we wanted as much outdoor living space as possible. We went specifically to catamaran charterers and immediately picked on the Lagoon 440 owners version because it had three double berths with three separate heads, PLUS it was the only one that had air conditioning. However, the electric fans in the cabin proved to be just as effective!”

Once on board, how did you find the cruising experience? “ Understandably, we were somewhat wary initially, having only ever sailed keel boats, but with the twin engines it was incredibly easy to manoeuvre,

page 16

surprisingly quick and as easy to handle as quoted. There are no marinas on the whole of the Andaman Sea, aside from two in Phuket, so you are in the main, dropping anchor off beach resorts when you want to go ashore and dine in the restaurants or simply take in the local Island life. Sailing was absolutely effortless, especially given the electric winches, and out of the six of us, only two had any previous sailing experience so it was great fun and an extremely safe learning ground for our novice crew. As soon as a sunny bay was found the sails were brought down and the girls would be sunbathing on the trampolines. The scenery in this area is absolutely breath taking and with fantastic restaurants and resorts on the Islands, they are all catering for this sort of holiday. There are also a lot of deserted islands to explore. The beauty of this sort of holiday is, as you pass something, or an island of interest, you have the time and ease of ability to simply stop and explore. We immediately discovered that we could get to places which are ridiculously busy such as Maya Bay ( where the famous Leonardo DiCaprio movie ‘The Beach’ was filmed), early in the morning before the crowds arrived, and sight see the very best at our own pace. These destinations now get absolutely packed since Hollywood arrived. However, in total contrast, the afternoon might see us enjoying a barbeque off the pushpit on the back of

www.ancastamultihulls.com

the boat, where long tail fishing boats would come and sell us langoustines and their ‘catch of the day’ for a couple of cans of beer and a couple of baht!.

Did the boat meet and/or exceed your expectations? It was, for all six of us, above and beyond all expectation. The flybridge was just brilliant because of the panoramic views; it was easy to moor, and again, the freedom and the amount of space the Lagoon offers, we believe are unrivalled, Anchoring was a joy, because it so easy – as was navigating with the chart plotter, both downstairs and on the helm. Basically you

are able, if you choose, to set your course and simply head off on autopilot. Obviously we kept our eyes peeled for fishing buoys!

What were your favourite aspects of this shared holiday experience ? The independence that gave us a completely stress free holiday dictated by our own timetable. The peace, the beauty and the privacy we were able to enjoy, despite having six people on board. It was absolutely idyllic. We would not hesitate in recommending this kind of total ‘unwind’ to anyone else.

page 17

Any plans for another similar journey ? Absolutely! We’re already ‘debating’ whether to go and explore the Med or the Caribbean. Many thanks to Steve and Anna for their time and also supplying some great photos. If you have any similar experiences of a boating holiday/getway/excursion, that you would like to share, we would love to hear from you!
