Shared Ownership

What is Shared Ownership? Shared ownership involves a syndicate of two or more people sharing the ownership of a boat. The purchase cost of the vessel is split between the members of the syndicate – evenly or in various sized shares – and decisions about where the boat is moored, how often it is used and how it is managed are made jointly between all parties. Each owner will also pay into a maintenance fund, proportioned to their use of the boat and share of ownership. There are many different ways in which the syndicate can be set up and how the costs are split; the rules are up to you!

How It Works Forming a Syndicate To register an interest in joining a shared ownership syndicate, each potential co-owner will be asked to pay a holding deposit of 5% of their share in the yacht. Following this, Ancasta will search for suitable co-owners to join the syndicate and introduce candidates until a likeminded and collaborative group is formed.

Management Protocols Once a syndicate has been formed, all parties will need to agree on how the boat should be run and appoint a managing agent to look after all of the yacht’s affairs on behalf of the coowners. Ancasta will draft a proposed Partnership Agreement which can then be tweaked to suit the joint wishes of the syndicate. Managing Agent The Managing Agent will be responsible to all parties for all matters related to the yacht and will act as a single point of contact for all of the co-owners and any suppliers involved with the vessel. They will also manage the finances of the yacht and the usage schedule to ensure that all of the costs are covered by the agreed budget and that everyone gets their fair share of time onboard. Maintenance In order to keep the yacht running smoothly and to help retain its residual value, all members of the syndicate will pay an agreed amount by direct debit every month into a joint maintenance

fund. This pot will cover berthing, insurance, storage, servicing, cleaning, general maintenance, gardiennage etc. End of Term Agreement From the beginning, the syndicate will agree on a termination date for the Partnership Agreement at which point they will sell the yacht. This term can, of course, be extended, if agreed by all members of the group, but otherwise, Ancasta offer a guaranteed buyback, or the yacht can be put on the market. This provides members with the reassurance of a guaranteed termination date and sale price should they wish to leave the syndicate. Alternatively, the syndicate can enter a part-exchange deal and attain a new yacht to start the process again. There is also the option for members to continue with the agreement, but they must find other partners to join the syndicate or buy out any remaining shares, if not all of the members choose to stay involved.

Key Benefits of Shared Ownership

in how the boat is handled and looked after, keeping maintenance standards and residual value high.

Reduced Costs As the purchase price and ongoing running costs of the yacht are split between all of the owners within the syndicate, the cost of owning a yacht can be significantly cheaper than buying outright. Equally, shared ownership can allow you to own a much larger or more luxurious yacht than you would have done if you had bought a yacht outright.

Asset Ownership If at the end of the Partnership Agreement the co-owners decide to sell the vessel, you will receive a share of the funds. Although some depreciation is likely, this ensures that your money is invested into an asset rather than just spent on membership or charter fees for which you will not gain any return.

Control Unlike joining a yacht ownership club or membership scheme, Shared Ownership gives you control over how the boat is managed and how it is used - this is YOUR yacht. Of course, all decisions have to be universally agreed by all parties in the agreement or by majority vote, but as joint owners, rather than members, everyone will take extra pride

Hassle Free Yachting In order to make sure all parties involved with the partnership are kept happy, a Management Company will be appointed to look after all of the day to day running of the yacht including budgets, financial accounts, maintenance, crew, berthing, usage schedules etc. This takes away all of the hassle of running a yacht so that the owners can just turn up and enjoy time onboard their vessel.
