Welcome to the 29th Ancasta Collection After a busy few months of boat shows in the UK, Europe and the US, a flurry of new yacht launches from Sanlorenzo, Bluegame, Prestige, and Beneteau Sail, and exciting additions to our everexpanding portfolio of new-boat brands, including Scorpion RIBs, this summer has certainly been one to remember. And the excitement doesn’t stop there. In anticipation of the 37th America’s Cup, the first AC40 regattas in Spain and Saudi Arabia were a huge success. Six teams went head-to-head in these incredible high-octane foiling machines, showcasing their phenomenal prowess and speed on the racetrack. Meanwhile, visitors to Metstrade were able to take the helm of the incredibly realistic AC40 simulator, which is being used as a crew training tool. A collective of private owners have shown significant interest in the AC40, and we’re planning a busy events calendar, so watch this space for more exciting developments! Over in the boatyard, Ancasta Yacht Services is experiencing a surge in activity as the winter work schedule fills up. Redefining off-shore sailing with crew Renowned yacht designer and naval architect Phillipe Briand has modernised the CNB heritage with this latest model, the CNB 78. Built by the new owners of Solaris Yachts with the exacting process and tolerances of CNB's world-class standards, this luxurious vessel has been configured for owners looking for an elegant yet powerful offshore sailing yacht for extended cruising. An evolution of the ever-successful CNB 76, the CNB 78 features a new hull with a broader transom and two chines, making the interior significantly more spacious. By moving the chart table and adding a window by the companionway, the open-plan saloon is bigger and brighter. And storage is plentiful throughout. The one-level deck is lighter and stiffer, and all controls lead back to the aft helm stations, keeping the guest cockpit clear and aiding shorthanded sailing. The enlarged integral garage can now accommodate a 3.95m tender with an engine, and there is more space onboard for crew members.

Fuel Cell System Certification from Lloyd’s Register During the recent Monaco Yacht Show, Lloyd’s Register granted Sanlorenzo an approval certification for their Fuel Cell system and Type C containment tank, which were co-designed by the shipyard in partnership with Siemens Energy. Notably, Lloyd’s Register played a crucial role in endorsing Sanlorenzo’s project, and the certification unequivocally confirms that the methanol fuel cell system complies with globally recognised environmental standards, enhancing its credibility in the market. “The collaboration with Sanlorenzo on this innovative project affirms LR’s role as a trusted advisor to our clients and demonstrates our support for early developers of solutions to reduce carbon emissions in the yachting industry.We are delighted to give Sanlorenzo this approval, which confirms that their methanol fuel cell system meets the required safety standards.” Paolo Izzo, LR Sales & Marketing Manager for Italy, Monaco & Malta
This innovative solution, a pioneering first, is set to debut on the new 50Steel line of Sanlorenzo superyachts, with the first unit scheduled for delivery in the summer of 2024. Düsseldorf Boat Show 20-28 January 2024 Düsseldorf Boat Show, renowned as the largest indoor boat show in the world, will open its doors from 20 – 28 January 2024. The team from Sanlorenzo Yachts UK will be on hand to show you the exceptional Sanlorenzo SL90A or to discuss the full range of yachts available from Sanlorenzo. The 27.60 metre LOA SL90A breaks the mould compared to other yachts in her class, and sits under the important 24 metre hull length. By removing the port side deck, the main saloon volume is 10-15% greater and the floor-to-ceiling windows create an incredible link to the sea.
Accommodation onboard is also revolutionary for a yacht of this size. The SL90A caters for up to eight guests in four astonishing staterooms, plus four crew members. The master cabin is positioned forward on the main deck, something typically only found on larger yachts, with direct access to a private foredeck lounge area. Powered by twin MAN 2,000HP diesel engines, the SL90A cruises at 25 knots with a maximum speed of 29 knots. She has a gross tonnage of 95GT and a 6.5m beam. The MC75 perfectly blends generous living quarters with impressive sailing capabilities, all within 24 meters. Excelling in efficiency, space, and style, this sailing multihull promises an exhilarating sailing experience.
Retractable Windows Fully retractable windows and floor-to-ceiling glass create the perception of freedom, with an infinite amount of visual space afforded to the owner and an enhanced, symbiotic relationship between inside and out. The internal volume is optimised to ensure every space has a distinct purpose in a layout that dispels all preconceptions of yacht interiors.

ECO INITIATIVES GAIN MOMENTUM Lagoon has implemented various measures over the years to reduce its footprint on the marine environment. From sourcing raw materials to product design, the brand has incorporated new and improved manufacturing methods for its catamarans. These efforts are evident in the new Lagoon 51 which incorporates wood sourced from FSC-certified forests and upholstery composed of recycled materials. This innovative catamaran is also equipped with other eco-responsible solutions, including XXL solar panels integrated into the roof which generate an impressive 3,000 watts of energy. Lagoon has also moved towards a more bio-sourced resin, hemp has replaced fibreglass wherever possible, and they are working on improving black water treatment, solar panel efficiency, wind turbines, hydro-generators, and air conditioning systems for better performance and less environmental impact. Furthermore, both of Lagoon’s shipyards in Vendée, France, hold certifications in ISO 9001, ISO 50001, and ISO 14001, certifying their effective environmental management system (EMS). SPOTLIGHT ON IROKO DECKING As a part of Beneteau's mission to reduce its impact on the environment, the Research and Innovation Team, headed up by Erwan Faoucher, has been developing and introducing new sustainable boating technologies for their cruising boats. One key development has been the introduction of a new decking material to replace high quality teak which has become an unsustainable option. Teak is loved for its natural visual appeal as well as its durability, so finding a substitute was challenging. However, after lots of research and testing, Beneteau’s solution is bonded layers of African wood called Iroko. A natural timber originating from Guinea, the raw materials are responsibly sourced from FSC certified forests to ensure sustainability.
Named Iro-Deck, the new timber not only provides a much more sustainable option than teak, but it also looks fantastic with a beautiful colour. Furthermore, it is resistant to cracking. View Boats Online and in Person Spend time browsing yachts for sale online and take note of all of the detailed specifications. This is the best way to create a shortlist of your favourite boats for sale. Once you have your wishlist, we strongly urge you to view your favourite boats in person. There’s no better way to get a feel for whether a yacht is right for you and gives you the opportunity to inspect it thoroughly.
Make an Offer When you find a boat that you would like to buy, consult with your yacht broker to come up with a suitable offer. Vendors are sometimes open to negotiating the price, but there’s a delicate balance between agreeing on a fair price and causing offence to the current owner. An experienced yacht agent will be able to help establish what the yacht is truly worth and what they think the vendor will be willing to accept.
Get a Marine Survey When you make an offer on a used boat, we advise making it ‘subject to survey' and ensuring you have that survey carried out by a professional who is a member of the Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association (YDSA). A boat survey can highlight possible issues that may occur in the future and ensure peace of mind that the vessel is as the seller says it is.
Organise Boat Insurance Insuring your new boat is an essential part of boat ownership. As well as cover for loss and accidental damage for your boat, you may also need legal liabilities cover for guests and crew, and emergency medical cover. Furthermore, a more comprehensive policy will be required for commercial vessels. Ancasta can put you in contact with several Marine Insurance companies to help you find the best policy for your needs.
Prepare Paperwork and Pay the Deposit
Organise Boat Maintenance All boats require ongoing care and maintenance, so it’s worth considering this ahead of your purchase. You may choose to look after your boat yourself, or many owners will enlist professional assistance to keep on top of everything. Our sister company, Ancasta Yacht Services, has a professional yacht care team who will ensure your boat performs at its best, giving you more time to enjoy time on the water.
Plan Refits and Upgrades
Once you have an offer accepted, the boat buying transaction process begins. You’ll usually be asked to pay a 10% deposit into your broker’s Client Account. Then, your broker will ask for copies of all the original ownership paperwork to check that everything is in order. If satisfied that everything is as it should be, you’ll be asked to pay the remaining purchase funds into your broker’s Client Account, ready for the final exchange.
Plan New Boat Commissioning When purchasing a new boat, you may have the opportunity to customise the final specifications. This could include things like the colour of the topsides, electronic systems, furniture veneers, upholstery fabrics, appliances, covers, passerelles, bow thrusters, and much more. If you buy a new boat from Ancasta, we have a dedicated commissioning team to guide you through the process of specifying a boat to your exact requirements.
Book Berthing / Storage Ahead of the purchase, it’s a good idea to secure berthing or storage ashore for your new boat. There are many different options to consider, including marina berthing, mooring buoys or storage ashore. Each of these has its own pros and cons, and prices vary wildly depending on where your boat is located, so it’s worth shopping around.
If you are buying a used boat that needs a refit, or want to upgrade some of the systems, plan this ahead of completion so the work can start immediately. Some of the most common yacht refit and repair projects include teak deck restoration, bow thruster installation, new boat covers, topside painting, and electronics upgrades. You may wish to carry out some of these jobs yourself, but if you’re unsure, it’s worth hiring a professional yacht services company to complete the tasks and provide a warranty.
Invest in Skipper and Crew Training Skipper and crew training will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to operate your new boat with confidence and in a safe manner. Courses are readily available all over the UK and abroad, and your yacht broker will also be able to guide you on which courses will be most beneficial for your experience level.
Handover Day Once all of the paperwork has been done and the final payment cleared, the boat will be handed over to you, and you can begin your new boating adventure! 37th America’s Cup PRELIMINARY REGATTAS
The very first AC40 America’s Cup Preliminary Regattas got off to a flying start in Vilanova, Spain in September, and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in December. Six AC40 teams went head-to-head in five and eight races respectively, providing valuable practice and an opportunity for crew to fine-tune their strategies before the America’s Cup Challenger Selection Series in September 2024. Both events were well attended, with hundreds of spectator boats gathered on the sidelines and choppers buzzing overhead, to watch the very first AC40 fleet races. With a wide range of conditions across the events, the regattas were a real spectacle, and spectators were able to witness the spectacular speeds of the AC40’s and exciting, close-quarter manoeuvres. NYYC American Magic finished at the top of the leaderboard, with Emirates Team New Zealand close behind in Vilanova. While in Jeddah, Emirates Team New Zealand took the win followed by the Italian Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team in second.

AC40 CLASS RACING This is the first time we’ve seen the AC40’s racing as a fleet, giving a first flavour of what the new AC40 One Design class could look like over the coming years. We were thrilled to host close to 30 interested parties at the Vilanova event, getting them close to the action on our Protector Boats Chase 380. A majority of current America’s Cup teams have expressed interest in joining the AC40 class after the AC contest, and the class is aiming for its first event in late 2024 before a full season in 2025.
THE BOATS - AC40 The Preliminary Regattas were raced in strict onedesign AC40s. These incredible foiling monohulls are the world’s newest and most exciting foiling class, with top speeds reaching 50 knots and beyond. The boats’ controls, sails, foils and mechanisms are all be standardised, so the emphasis is on crew work, strategic positioning and foiling technique.
To prepare for these events, all the teams devoted significant time to familiarising themselves with the boats’ controls, undergoing rigorous training sessions in the AC40 Simulators which are available to buy now, allowing teams to hone their abilities to maximise their performance on the water. The combination of high-speed foiling and the crews’ expertise creates exhilarating and closely contested races.
AC40 SIMULATOR AT METSTRADE Representing McConaghy Boats and Emirates Team New Zealand, Ancasta Raceboats hosted the AC40 simulator at Metstrade in September. Located in the new Foiling Pavillion, it was a highlight of the show. Hundreds of people tried out the simulator over the three-day event, with the DutchSail Womens Americas Cup Team setting the fastest time. The AC40 cockpit replicas built by McConaghy Boats, incorporate seats, dashboards wheels, and controls identical to the real thing. The technology and hardware are incredibly realistic, giving sailors an authentic experience and a true feel for life in fast lane. Not only is this a great training platform for the current AC race teams, allowing sailors to perfect their AC40 sailing skills before they get on the water, but it is also an incredible opportunity for AC40 owners and potential owners to get a true idea of what getting behind the wheel of a superfast AC40 will feel like from the comfort of your office.

Taking bespoke commissions, their creations are displayed far beyond the home shores of the Isle of Wight, and the UK. With inhouse expertise, onsite swaging facilities, and a multitude of applications across a range of sectors, their specialist skills working with stainless steel wire are in demand worldwide. Over the summer of 2023, Spencer Rigging has been working alongside the skilled craftsman at The Woodshack, a Southamptonbased joinery company, and together they have combined their expertise to create something truly special for a stunning villa on the Caribbean island of Mustique. Renowned for offering the height of luxury, whether a Caribbean cruiser enjoying cocktails at the world-famous Basil’s Bar, or a Hollywood A-lister escaping it all at a hideaway villa, Mustique’s charm and exclusivity make it one of the most popular hotspots in the West Indies, and the owner of the villa commissioned a bespoke pergola to enjoy the stunning island views from the property. Spencer Rigging’s brief was not only to provide safety to the structure but also to offer a touch of elegance and sophistication with a wire balustrading system. Balustrading creates clean and simple lines giving a modern aesthetic while offering uninterrupted views as well as being low maintenance and surprisingly easy to install. It was the perfect complement to the wooden structure crafted by the team at The Woodshack. Sleek and secure While the main purpose of balustrading around the pergola’s staircase and decking area is to ensure safety, it does so without compromising style. The brief for the villa project prioritized strong materials that could withstand the Caribbean’s tropical climate and Spencer Rigging elected to use 4mm 1x19 stainless steel wire rope, manufactured from 316L marine grade stainless steel. Small diameter wires make for efficient and attractive balustrade infill and are commonly used in domestic projects, providing a fully weatherproof, strong, and built-to-last solution. Unlike glass balustrades, the 316L marine grade stainless steel cables do not need to be cleaned regularly and have limited glare with minimal reflection from evening sunlight which might spoil your view.

To hold each wire in place between the hand-crafted timbers, precision-engineered ball fittings and sockets provide maximum stability, and prevent any loose connections. The ball fitting system combines wire termination, adjustment, and anchorage, firmly securing the wires between each post with integrity and a clean finish. The sockets are easy to attach to walls, ceilings, floors, or, as in the case of this project, wooden posts with surface mounting sockets. Designs and installation As with all engineering projects, the accuracy of the design ensures successful manufacture and detailed depictions of each area were drawn up for the pergola structure. Featuring over 100 individually cut lengths with terminals at each end, the cutters and presses at Spencer Rigging’s well-equipped loft went into action as manufacturing began. Each wire was eye-checked and hand-finished, ensuring quality and integrity. This meant all parts of the project could be checked, but the simple installation of the Spencer Rigging ball and socket system for balustrading required no specific expertise. Manual Headsail Reefing Systems
The manual furling systems of the MF series from Reckmann are the continuation of a long tradition of reliable and wellengineered furling systems, with both above-deck and under-deck versions suitable for both rod and wire forestays. It is an elegant design with first-class workmanship, using the very best materials available. All axle elements, drum guard, and toggle are manufactured with precisely specified stainless steel alloys. These combined with the high-strength bronze length adjuster mechanism and the light rigid plastic drum, result in a highly functional and durable system. The MF series is available in three system sizes for yachts from 30 to 78 feet.
Electric Headsail Reefing Systems
The electric EF 90 reefing systems combine trendsetting design and peak efficiency in an overall highcapacity system. The systems are designed for use on yachts of approx. 36-70 feet in length and for wire forestays from 8 to 16 mm in diameter (alternatively rods -12 to -76). A newly developed gear technology and sophisticated bearing technology lend the smooth running EF 90 unprecedented functionality. It is comforting to know that it is easy to switch over to manual operation if necessary in an emergency. To guarantee secure and simple operation, loads from the sail are completely retained in the gearbox and hence cannot affect the winch handle operation. The integral stay length adjustment is likewise easy to operate and works even with the sail furled. The system sizes of EF90-2 and EF90-3 guarantee high performance and high efficiency in simple and comfortable operation on 36-foot boats as well as much larger yachts.
Hydraulic Headsail Reefing Systems
The RF90 is a high-performance hydraulic reefing system for foresails. It is built to be virtually maintenance-free and with superior gear technology. These systems offer maximum performance and longevity. The integration of spiral-mesh gearing, sophisticated bearing design, and a self-braking worm gear, result in a quiet and smooth running system, which meets the highest industry standards. Moreover, the special emergency manual drive fitted to the RF90 offers complete safety to the user. Through the simple insertion of a standard winch handle, the hydraulic drive is uncoupled and switched to manual operation. Thanks to a special gear mechanism, which prevents the transfer of the sail load to the winch handle, the reefing system can be operated easily and safely even in manual operation mode. All systems in this series are equipped with an easy-tooperate length adjuster for optimal trimming of mast and sail. The hydraulic assisted length adjusters are available starting with model RF90-4.

A Guide For The New Season The words ‘Spring Maintenance’ may seem daunting but spending time now on some key tasks will ensure your boat is season-ready and you’ll have many months of plain sailing ahead. The team at Ancasta Yacht Services is on hand to assist and take the hassle out of preparing your boat for the season, and whether you are looking for a full service package, or help with some specialist tasks, here we outline what you should be considering this Spring for the sailing season ahead.
On the outside
Sails and Canvas
If your yacht or motorboat has been stored on the hard for the winter, it is an ideal opportunity for a diligent hull check including the keel, skeg and rudder before the boat is re-launched. Check for any abrasions, scratches, or gouges and repair them, and check around through-hull fittings, especially around the rudder. Ancasta Yacht Services can help with a variety of care services for a professional finish, including antifouling, hull polishing, teak cleaning, and anode replacement.
Canvas on deck including sail covers, biminis, and dodgers will likely need a good clean if they have been exposed to the elements over the winter. As part of laying up, sails should have been removed and laundered, but at the very least these should be checked for wear and chafe ahead of your first sail of the season.
Wherever your boat has been stored over the winter months, you’ll likely need to carry out a detailed exterior clean. If doing this yourself, make sure drains and scuppers are clear, and use the marine-specific cleaning products for each area e.g. a mild detergent for the hull, a good polish for metalwork, and check the seals as you clean around windows. Teak decks will require extra care but even weathered and faded teak can be rejuvenated with the correct valeting solutions and cleaning methods from the experts. On deck, carry out a bow to stern appraisal of the deckware. Look at the integrity of the stanchions, pulpits, and lifelines, as well as the chain plates and cleats. Inspect your anchor system and clean and grease all winches. Leak test your hatches and portlights. You’ll want to check your onboard inventory of engine spares, making sure you have key items like fuel and oil filters, impellors, coolant, and engine oil (safely stowed to avoid leakage). It is also important details are recorded in the engine maintenance log, especially the date & hours of the last oil changes.

Freshen the interior
You rely on your boat’s electrical system to run lights, electronics, appliances, pumps, and gauges so annual servicing is critical to ensure your comfort and safety for the sailing season ahead. As part of your Spring maintenance programme, a thorough check of all electrical components on board should be carried out to ensure they are clean, tight, corrosion-free connections and all wiring inspected for wear and chafe. Check shore power and battery power, and your spares inventory for bulbs and fuses – don’t forget your navigation lights! If your Christmas list included some new tech toys for the boat, ensure these are wired into the boat’s systems correctly and update any software to fix bugs. If you are considering adding more appliances to an existing setup, speak to a qualified marine electrician to understand the implications on your power usage, particularly if bluewater cruising is in your plans and you are likely to be using power-hungry items away from shore facilities. Even the best-winterised boat cabin can get a bit stale if not used for several months, so the first step is to open it up and air it out. A professional interior valet can breathe new life into the living spaces, best done before you start re-stocking the galley and returning items you may have removed over the winter. Service the heads, check the plumbing, and clean heavy-use items such as the oven. Freshwater systems should be recommissioned and you may choose to leave this job to the professionals to flush lines thoroughly and reconnect pumps on board.
Safety Equipment Most types of safety equipment, including liferafts, lifejackets, EPIRBS, and hydrostatic MOB equipment, will require regular servicing, so make sure everything is up to date prior to the season getting underway. For items with a limited lifespan, such as flares, check these have not expired, and, if they have, dispose of them safely and replace accordingly. Twenty years of magic Dame Ellen MacArthur has emotional reunion with one of the first young people to ever sail with her cancer charity
When Dame Ellen MacArthur was invited to go sailing with children recovering from cancer in France in the late ‘90s, she immediately knew the UK needed something just like it.
reflecting on the life-changing difference being supported all those years ago made to Maxine, and the brighter future she’s lived ever since. “That first ever trip was transformational,” recalls Maxine.
It was whilst with A Chacun Son Cap, the French charity which takes young people with cancer sailing off the coast of Brittany, Ellen realised sailing, the biggest love in her life, could be transformational in so many other incredible ways too.
“When my mum dropped me off, I don’t think ‘reluctant’ is a strong enough word. I was so co-dependent, I was terrified to leave her, but she knew it would be good for me and pushed me to go. We separated in tears.
So, in 2003 the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust launched by taking five young people from Great Ormond Street Hospital sailing on the Isle of Wight, with the intention of inspiring each of them to believe in a brighter future at a time when life was particularly challenging.
“I’m sure she must have been thinking the same: ‘Am I doing the right thing? Is this really what’s best for her, or will she have a distressing few days?’ But it was the best decision she could’ve made.
One of those young people was Maxine Duggins. At the time, she was 10 years old, and took a short break from her treatment for Ewing sarcoma – a type of bone and soft tissue cancer – to attend this first ever Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust adventure.
“I met the people at the Trust. I met the other kids. Magic happened. I don’t know how else to explain it. The atmosphere was enjoyment and fun, which was just so lacking in my life. I was in such a depressed state, then suddenly there was joy again.”
When Maxine and her mum arrived, Ellen saw them struggle to say goodbye. Letting go after being by each other’s side through cancer was near impossible. Ellen wondered: ‘Are we doing the right thing?’
Getting stuck in around the boat and learning something new was amazing after feeling unable to do anything for so long. As the week went on, Maxine felt herself becoming more confident in her body again. She remembers taking lots of pictures, dangling her feet over the side, and making lasagne on board.
Now, two decades on to celebrate its 20th anniversary, the Trust has brought Maxine and Ellen back together for an emotional reunion,

“For some reason making lasagne really sticks out in my mind,” she says. “I remember going in for a second helping, which was not something I was used to doing, my appetite was next to non-existent. It’s the weird things you remember.”
Hope after cancer Talking with Maxine twenty years on was deeply moving for Ellen, who had taken a photo of Maxine around the world with her when she broke the record. “The memory of Maxine on that trip remains one of the most vibrant of all the Trust trips I’ve been on,” she said. “It was so profound, and I was there from the moment her mum dropped her off to the moment she picked her up. I saw that transformation. It summed up everything the Trust is about, it really did.” Maxine returned for eight more adventures with the Trust, including 2007’s Round the Island Race and the charity’s epic voyage around Britain in 2009, having found somewhere she could rebuild her sense of self. “The Trust gives you back a bit of your personality. School was on pause, so my life was just treatment. You go on a trip, have this new experience, learn all different kinds of things and you’re able to share that. Now there was another layer to my life that wasn’t about cancer, it was about silliness and fun. “It gave me hope there is life after cancer, still fun to be had, still enjoyment. This isn’t going to be my world forever. There are still good times.
“I was eager to go on the next trip as soon as possible. I always remember it being something positive. You make life-long friends. “Because I was a child, I didn’t necessarily recognise the positive changes that were happening to me immediately. It’s something you look back on and realise there has been a profound transformation. I don’t know if I can quantify how the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust has impacted my life now, but there’s no doubt that it has.” Since 2003, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust has supported 3,137 young people like Maxine.
