Sanlorenzo is Going Even Greener

With sustainability firmly at the core of its growth strategy, Sanlorenzo is consistently investing in innovation to minimise the environmental impact of its operations, from manufacturing processes to material selection and propulsion systems.

Three new solar-powered plants

Following recent receipt of an approval certification from Lloyd’s Register for its Fuel Cell System, Sanlorenzo has taken another significant step in reducing its carbon footprint by partnering with Axpo Energy Solutions Italia to establish three new solar-powered plants at its sites in Ameglia, La Spezia, and Viareggio.

Complementing the existing 500 kW at Sanlorenzo’s facilities, these new plants with a total capacity of 1.5 MW will lead to a reduction of over 600 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

New partnership to advance decarbonisation in yachting

Sanlorenzo has formed a partnership with Volvo Penta to bring the power solutions provider’s IPS Professional Platform to two new Sanlorenzo yachts, the SX120 and the SX132.

Integrating seamlessly into Sanlorenzo’s visionary yacht design, the IPS Professional Platform is set up for the combined use of energy sources, from combustion engines using renewable fuels to fully electric or hybrid solutions. It ensures greater efficiency by optimising energy use in real time based on cruising needs.

Delivering a seamless onboard experience through increased precision and quieter operation, the unique and compact design of the IPS Professional platform frees up valuable onboard space and reduces perceived noise by up to 50%.

The SX120 and the SX132 are expected to launch in 2025 and 2027 respectively and will be the first superyachts installed with the IPS Professional Platform.

This latest partnership demonstrates Sanlorenzo’s ongoing commitment to drive transformation and sustainability across the yachting industry. Sanlorenzo has also set the goal of launching the first 50 Steel equipped with a modular Reformer Fuel Cell system, capable of transforming green methanol into hydrogen and then into electricity to power all hotellerie equipment.

By the end of the decade, Sanlorenzo aims to launch the first superyacht powered solely by green methanol.

Sanlorenzo Immersive Experience in London

Celebrating the arrival of the magnificent SL90A in the UK, Sanlorenzo Yachts UK hosted a Sanlorenzo Immersive Experience at the historic St Katharine Docks, 11-24 March 2024.

In a reimagined Coronarium Building at this iconic maritime location, Sanlorenzo owners, prospective owners, yachting enthusiasts, and brokers were invited to immerse themselves in the Italian shipyard’s design innovation, artisan craftmanship and limitless customisation.

Sanlorenzo SL90A

Personifying elegance and style, the recently arrived 28-metre Sanlorenzo SL90A #813 took centre stage in the Sanlorenzo Immersive Experience.

Designed by Bernado Zuccon, this beautifully specified SL90A has been personalised with a light and modern interior using different wood, marble, and fabric textures, providing a subtle and dignified decor. And with four extremely well-appointed

staterooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom, up to eight guests can be accommodated in refined comfort.

Taking her model name from the bold and innovative Asymmetric designed layout, the SL90A’s port side deck has been moved up a level to increase the yacht’s interior volume. With the saloon on the main deck now expanded by 10-15 per cent, it’s been possible to amplify the tangible connection with the sea through the floor to ceiling windows.

Equipped with twin MAN 2000hp diesel engines giving a cruising speed of 25 knots, a 1100nm range can be achieved when travelling at 10 knots (eco cruising speed).

Built by Sanlorenzo Yachts at its Ameglia base on the Ligurian coast of Italy, this tailor-made yacht breaks the mould compared to others in her class, while remaining under the important 24-metre hull length.

New Build Sanlorenzo SL96A

Fully Customised New Build Sanlorenzo SL96A Launches

Featuring a sleek GRP hull and superstructure with sweeping horizontal lines, the 100 GT yacht boasts a beam of 6.67-metres and a draft of 1.9-metres, ensuring even the shallowest anchorages and harbours are accessible while providing luxurious accommodation for up to 10 guests.

The build has been overseen by Nick Hatfield from our Sanlorenzo Yachts UK office, and we’ve liaised with Sanlorenzo’s Interior Design Department to completely tailor-make this bespoke SL96A to its new owner’s discerning tastes and exact requirements. And the level of personalisation goes far beyond changing the base design aesthetically with a different leather, wood finish or fabric.

Building a Sanlorenzo takes time and passion, and we’ve worked closely with the owner to bring their dream yacht to life, ensuring every element reflects their preferences and practical mindset.

As with most customised builds, design and configuration of the main living areas took priority. Having chosen a five guestcabin, three crew-cabin layout, one of the crew cabins can act as a guest cabin for kids if needed. This means the boat can function as a six guest-cabin boat if required, offering even greater flexibility for those onboard.

All cabins including crew have en-suite bathrooms and, adding to the sense of individuality, a private inner hallway leading to the owner’s cabin located on the main deck has been included. In addition, the flybridge features a custom dining table with a wrap-around sofa while in the main saloon there are refined cabinets meticulously handmade by Sanlorenzo.

We started working on this build in the summer of 2022, with the only limitation being the hull shape and exterior profile. By the time the contract was signed, the owner of the SL96A had itemised 411 custom modifications outside the standard options list, and this number has now broken the 600 barrier. Unlike any competitor brand, the shipyard has taken this totally in its stride.

The galley, specifically, was one area we developed very closely with the owner to ensure the space works seamlessly with their life onboard. The unique layout features a custom butterfly-wing serving hatch on the starboard side to allow food, drinks, and empty plates to be passed between the galley and front-of-house crew quickly and efficiently.

At Sanlorenzo, customisation is almost without limits. The owner of the SL96A says of his experience: “I honestly had no idea at the start of this project just how much customisation Sanlorenzo would offer. As just one example, most builders offer their interior furniture in a choice of three or four veneers with either a matt or gloss finish.

“When I asked Sanlorenzo for its menu, the answer was: ‘Any sustainably produced veneer available anywhere on the planet, with the grain direction at any angle and any degree of matt/gloss from 0% to 100% in 5% increments. Alternatively, any surface can be spray-painted in any colour or leather covered or mirrored along with any surface effect like fluting or fielding. And this applies to the ceilings as well as the walls and furniture’.”

A true example of customisation, this incredible made-tomeasure yacht will be delivered to the owner at the end of March 2024 in time for the season in the Mediterranean.

NEW LAGOON 60

The latest in Lagoon’s long line of stylish, comfortable and versatile catamarans, the Lagoon 60 makes life onboard better than ever.

Affinity Cockpit

Entirely open to the sea, the aft cockpit of the Lagoon 60 affords exceptional freedom of movement with drop down sides and open railings the only boundary between you and the ocean. Wide steps lead down to the water and the spacious hydraulic beach platform provides excellent access for swimming. A large dining area to port provides the perfect spot for alfresco dinners, while the starboard side features a day bed and steps to the flybridge.

Superior Design

Featuring naval architecture by VPLP, exterior design by Patrick le Quement, and an interior by Italy’s Nauta Design, the Lagoon 60 has a beam of 32ft 4in and a draft of 5ft 5in and is the third-largest sailing catamaran in the Lagoon range, behind the Sixty 5 and flagship Seventy 7.

Fluid Motion

Accessed by a door forward of the saloon, and with flush flooring, the vast forward cockpit offers a comfortable, inviting space for relaxation. Upon entering each living space, you are greeted with a panoramic view, and movement around the catamaran is fluid and without obstacles.

Inviting Interior Spaces

Modular, spacious, and turned toward the exterior, the saloon is adaptable to suit all preferences, and large vertical windows flood the interior with abundant natural light. Choose from either a large galley with overhead storage or a bar with galley-down layout and enjoy relaxed dining with a large table to starboard and a lounge area to port.

Generous Accommodation

In the galley-up layout, there are five guest cabins in the hulls, comprising three to port and two to starboard including a large owner’s suite with direct access to the cockpit. Crew accommodation is in the forepeaks. The galley-down version has four guest cabins, with the galley replacing the aft cabin in the port hull.

Marked Performance

The Lagoon 60 has a mast clearance of 30m (98ft), sail area of 239sqm, a 149sqm square-top mainsail and a 90sqm genoa. The yacht also has twin 150hp engines, a 1,300-litre fuel capacity and a 960-litre water capacity.

Multifunctional Flybridge

The spacious upper deck features an L-shaped dinette and an outdoor galley for elevated dining with 360-degree views over the ocean. A comfortable bench-seat accompanies the helm to starboard and large sun pads provide sumptuous sunbathing areas forward.

Established in 1884, Beneteau was founded by Benjamin Beneteau building sail fishing boats in Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, a quaint fishing village nestled along the Vendée coastline in France. Beneteau’s boats were designed to be fast, enabling skippers to transport their catch back to port ahead of the competition and secure the best price. 1965 - Recreational Fishing Boat Range

Following two wars, numerous challenges, and transitions across multiple family members, Benjamin Beneteau’s grandchildren Annette Bénéteau Roux and her brother André Bénéteau introduced a line of fibreglass recreational fishing boats. The company’s inaugural range, spanning from 3.6 to 5.8 meters, emerged in the late 1960s, and made its debut at the Paris Boat Show in 1965. This pivotal event facilitated formal orders and the first dealer partnerships were established.

1970s - Investment and Expansion

During the early 1970s, Beneteau embarked on a phase of significant investment and expansion, underscoring its commitment to progress and innovation. A stateof-the-art manufacturing facility was built, and the workforce size increased. Furthermore, the company welcomed fresh talent in the form of architects and boat builders, injecting renewed creativity and expertise into its operations. This led to the launch of the iconic First series, and the Antares motorboat range. 1980s – Award Winning Race Boats

As boating continued to surge in popularity and the competitive racing scene evolved, Beneteau became deeply entrenched in this evolving new market. The boating community recognised Beneteau’s commitment to excellence, leading to an extensive collection of awards and honours for its efforts. Amidst this era of growth and recognition, the 1980s emerged as a pivotal period for Beneteau, characterised by a strategic focus on brand building and the expansion of its dealership network.

1990s – Sail Cruising Evolution

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Beneteau launched its Oceanis cruising range. The acclaimed First series was also revived, and the one-design Figaro class was born. These moves demonstrated Beneteau’s commitment to innovation and excellence in sailing, offering a diverse range of vessels tailored to meet the evolving needs of sailors worldwide.

2000’s - Brand Portfolio Grows

Despite facing global economic challenges, Beneteau made strategic moves by introducing CNB Yachts and venturing into the mobile home market with IRM. Additionally, the brand strengthened its position by purchasing longtime rival, Jeanneau. The year 2008 marked another significant milestone with acquisition of the prestigious Italian brand Monte Carlo Yachts and Prestige became a separate brand, cementing its position in the luxury motor yacht market.

By now, Beneteau Group had established a formal board, primarily composed of family members, and further acquisitions resulted in a diversified portfolio of brands, including Beneteau, Jeanneau, Prestige, CNB, Lagoon, O’Hara, I.R.M, BH, Four Winns, Glastron, Wellcraft, Scarab, and Monte Carlo Yachts.

2010s – Revival of the First Line

In response to changing market preferences in the mid-2010s, Beneteau’s Annette Roux spearheaded efforts to rejuvenate the First line. By acquiring Seascape in 2017, Beneteau was able to accelerate their sportsboat offering and revitalise the First brand. This resulted in the release of the First Yacht 53 in 2019, and, addressing the need for a bridging model, Beneteau developed the award-winning First 36, blending modern design with lightweight construction. The market responded positively, with orders exceeding expectations.

2020s – An Ever-Growing Portfolio

Beneteau’s unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional vessels tailored to the diverse needs of sailing enthusiasts led to the introduction of several new boat models in the early 2020s. Notable releases included the Gran Turismo 41 and 45, which aimed to enhance seaworthiness and onboard comfort, the new Oceanis Yacht 60 that oozes elegance and sophistication, and the Swift Trawler 48 that delivers practicality and seaworthiness in abundance. The launch of the First 44 bridged the gap between the First 36 and First 53, refining performance, elegance and comfort, and the Oceanis 37.1 capitalised on innovative design to deliver greater volume and improved performance.

We highly recommend buying a boat through a professionally accredited (ABYA) yacht broker. Research Different Kinds of Boat

Do as much research as possible before looking for a boat to buy. Whether you’re buying a sailing yacht or motorboat, familiarise yourself with different types of boats and a variety of brands before narrowing your search down to a few models that best fit your preferred boating lifestyle. View Boats Online and in Person

Spend time browsing yachts for sale online and take note of all of the detailed specifications. This is the best way to create a shortlist of your favourite boats for sale. Once you have your wishlist, we strongly urge you to view your favourite boats in person. There’s no better way to get a feel for whether a yacht is right for you and gives you the opportunity to inspect it thoroughly.

Make an Offer

When you find a boat that you would like to buy, consult with your yacht broker to come up with a suitable offer. Vendors are sometimes open to negotiating the price, but there’s a delicate balance between agreeing on a fair price and causing offence to the current owner. An experienced yacht agent will be able to help establish what the yacht is truly worth and what they think the vendor will be willing to accept.

Get a Marine Survey

When you make an offer on a used boat, we advise making it ‘subject to survey' and ensuring you have that survey carried out by a professional who is a member of the Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association (YDSA). A boat survey can highlight possible issues that may occur in the future and ensure peace of mind that the vessel is as the seller says it is.

Organise Boat Insurance

Insuring your new boat is an essential part of boat ownership. As well as cover for loss and accidental damage for your boat, you may also need legal liabilities cover for guests and crew, and emergency medical cover. Furthermore, a more comprehensive policy will be required for commercial vessels. Ancasta can put you in contact with several Marine Insurance companies to help you find the best policy for your needs.

Prepare Paperwork and Pay the Deposit

Once you have an offer accepted, the boat buying transaction process begins. You’ll usually be asked to pay a 10% deposit into your broker’s Client Account. Then, your broker will ask for copies of all the original ownership paperwork to check that everything is in order. If satisfied that everything is as it should be, you’ll be asked to pay the remaining purchase funds into your broker’s Client Account, ready for the final exchange.

Plan New Boat Commissioning

When purchasing a new boat, you may have the opportunity to customise the final specifications. This could include things like the colour of the topsides, electronic systems, furniture veneers, upholstery fabrics, appliances, covers, passerelles, bow thrusters, and much more. If you buy a new boat from Ancasta, we have a dedicated commissioning team to guide you through the process of specifying a boat to your exact requirements.

Book Berthing / Storage

Ahead of the purchase, it’s a good idea to secure berthing or storage ashore for your new boat. There are many different options to consider, including marina berthing, mooring buoys or storage ashore. Each of these has its own pros and cons, and prices vary wildly depending on where your boat is located, so it’s worth shopping around.

Organise Boat Maintenance

All boats require ongoing care and maintenance, so it’s worth considering this ahead of your purchase. You may choose to look after your boat yourself, or many owners will enlist professional assistance to keep on top of everything. Plan Refits and Upgrades

If you are buying a used boat that needs a refit, or want to upgrade some of the systems, plan this ahead of completion so the work can start immediately. Some of the most common yacht refit and repair projects include teak deck restoration, bow thruster installation, new boat covers, topside painting, and electronics upgrades. You may wish to carry out some of these jobs yourself, but if you’re unsure, it’s worth hiring a professional yacht services company to complete the tasks and provide a warranty.

Invest in Skipper and Crew Training

A new one-design AC40 racing class is set to redefine the landscape of competitive sailing. Is your running rigging ready for the season?

As the summer sailing season is almost upon us, it’s a busy time for owners recommissioning their boats and planning their time on the water. Hopefully, the big tasks have been crossed off the jobs list, but now is a good time to re-familiarise yourself with your boat and look in detail at some of those often overlooked areas. Here we guide you through suggestions for evaluating your running rigging and key considerations if you want to replace and upgrade lines onboard.

Carry out a running rigging review

As with most equipment on board your boat, proper care and maintenance will extend the life of the ropes on board your yacht. From mooring lines to halyards, sheets to outhauls, the demands on your running rigging will vary and caring for your ropes correctly will help prevent failures, ensure safety, and extend their lifespan.

At least once a year, you should inspect your running rigging and look for signs of wear. Typical wear will show on the outside of a rope by the fibres becoming fluffy due to individual fibres breaking or wearing out. This kind of abrasion, known as chafe, usually happens gradually over long periods, and it is only a serious problem when it goes unnoticed in a hot spot, such as a halyard exit. Look at what could be the likely origin of the damage. Most commonly, it is caused by the line rubbing against a sharp or rough surface. Check over potential ‘danger zones’ on deck and in the rigging, such as exit points. Sheaves can often become chipped over time, and these should be replaced at the same time as the line if found to be the cause of the wear. If there is no damage to the sheave, check that the groove profile is suitable to support the entire diameter of the rope running through it; a 10% greater diameter than that of the rope is usually appropriate.

Feeling along the line as well as a visual inspection will help to identify any anomalies where the rope may start to show signs of wear. You may find kinks or twists in the rope or feel compacted or hardened areas which would not be apparent to the naked eye. Consider where the rope will be subjected to the most duress, i.e. where the halyard sits on the sheave or runs through a jammer and pay close attention to these areas. Also, look at the ends or termination of the rope, especially splices and thimbles. Thimbles can become loose under certain circumstances due to rope elongation, and eye splices containing hardware may wear quickly if not reinforced.

Replacing and repairing

If you discover lines that need replacing, you’ll want to consider some key factors in selecting the right replacements. At Spencer Rigging, we will happily help you navigate the wide selection of fibres and constructions on the market. Our primary running rigging brands, Gottifredi Maffioli, Liros and Kingfisher Ropes can all be made up to custom sizes and specifications and are hand-finished using the best quality shackles, snap shackles, rings and blocks.

The size of your yacht will indicate the load demands your running rigging will be subjected to and will likely dictate the minimum strength you should be considering, depending on the application on board. Equally, different boat types such as multihulls, heavy traditional cruising boats, or lightweight modern club racers, have varying but distinct demands on running rigging.

Keep in mind that even though high-performance ropes can handle substantial loads, it’s crucial to verify that your rig and deck equipment can handle such forces. If you intend to upgrade for performance or weight saving, it’s prudent to discuss your intentions with an experienced rigger for peace of mind.

Generally, rope manufacturers distinguish between cruising, performance cruising, and racing ranges, reflecting the strength, stretch, durability and weight attributes of the rope fibres and their construction which, of course, will have a bearing on their price. Most modern marine ropes are made up of two parts: the core, which takes the load, and a jacket or cover which protects the core from abrasion, heat and UV damage. When choosing the core and jacket/cover, you should strive for the best combination of strength, stretch, durability, grip, firmness, diameter, weight, and cost, dependent on the intended use of the rope.

Upgrading your running rigging

If you are considering a complete running rigging overhaul, do your research and feel free to contact the Spencer Rigging team in Cowes, or the Advanced Rigging & Hydraulics team in Hamble for advice. If your boat is new or new to you, or you are changing your intended sailing aspirations, heading offshore for an extended period for example, or upgrading from occasional cruising to regular round-the-cans racing, we’re happy to provide impartial advice on selecting the right running rigging.

Finally, given the safety implications, this is a reminder not to neglect to inspect your running rigging and to install replacements when needed. You and your crew will be happier and safer working with correctly selected and well cared for running rigging on board, resulting in a more enjoyable time on the water.

Straight Up – Get to grips with standing rigging

Your standing rigging is there both to hold up your mast structurally and to give your rig the controlled support it needs, allowing your sails to react for optimum performance and comfort.

Standing rigging and its attachments must be strong enough to support the full righting moment of your boat when under load, without stretching, so that the geometry of your rig (and therefore your performance and comfort) is maintained.

In addition, whether you principally cruise or race, keeping your rigging low in weight is beneficial. The more weight you carry aloft, the more it intensifies the situation when your boat begins to heel. Reducing the weight in the rigging makes the boat easier to handle by reducing the amount the yacht heels for a faster, more comfortable ride.

Here, we explore some common materials used for standing rigging and their characteristics with these principles in mind and consider the practicalities of installing and maintaining your yacht’s standing rigging.

Standing Rigging Materials

Among the various types of rigging materials available, wire, rod, and composite rigging are the most common choices for yacht owners. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages and is generally chosen for the vessel depending on its design and intended usage.

Wire Rigging

Wire rigging has been around for a long time and is generally the tried and tested go-to for cruising yachts. One of the key advantages of wire yacht rigging is its versatility. It is suitable for a wide range of sailing vessels, from small cruisers to large racing yachts, wire rigging can be adapted to different rig configurations and sailing styles, hence its popularity and enduring place in the market.

In the sailing world, stainless steel wire rope used for yacht rigging generally comes in 3 construction types: 1x19, 7x7 and 1x19 Compact Strand (dyform).

1x19

1x19 standard stainless steel specifically is the most common style of wire used, as it is suitable for most types of general applications due to its low elasticity and high breaking load. The wires are arranged in a single bundle without additional layers or configurations, hence the designation “1x19.” Each wire in the bundle is typically of the same diameter, resulting in a consistent and uniform construction, providing exceptional strength and rigidity. At Advanced Rigging & Hydraulics, we use high-specification 316 stainless steel constructed 1x19, which is certified and fully traceable, providing peace of mind in its integrity and suitability for the demands of a marine environment.

7x7

The 7x7 construction wire provides greater flexibility versus the 1x19 wire but it is the stronger of the flexible wire rope.

Compact Strand (Dyform)

Compact strand wire is also made of strands of 316 stainless steel, but each strand is shaped to fit together more compactly allowing more steel in the cross sectional area, making the wire less stretchy. For the same diameter as 1x19 wire, it is stronger and has a higher resistance to stretch. This allows it to be used in some cases in a smaller diameter than 1x19 wire, saving windage, and is most often used for highperformance shrouds, backstays, and forestays on yachts committed to racing or extended/performance cruising.

Rod Rigging

Nitronic 50, a corrosion-resistant steel alloy, is drawn at cold temperatures and demonstrates exceptional efficiency for yacht rigging. Characterised by superior performance, longevity, and brilliant aesthetics with a polished finish, rod rigging has grown as a popular choice for performance cruisers. Additionally, it boasts a lighter weight and smaller diameters compared to wire, minimizing wind resistance. Rod rigging has an extremely long life expectancy attributed to the design (mono strand) and the composition of the alloy, making it very corrosion resistant.

The rod is sized according to rated breaking strength, measured in pounds. The prefix is called the ‘dash size’ and is placed before the rated strength in thousands of pounds. So, -12 (dash twelve) rod has a rated strength of 12,000 lbs.

Composite Standing Rigging

Designed for large cruisers and high-performance yachts where weight savings aloft are paramount, composite rigging is the premium choice for standing rigging. The four primary materials used in fibre stays are Dyneema, Aramid, PBO and Carbon. Advanced Rigging & Hydraulics works with the leading manufacturers for each material depending on the client’s brief. Composite offers somewhere between 60-80% in weight savings over that of metal stay materials and the tensile breaking strengths are roughly 10-50% higher when talking about comparable sizing.

The Installation Process

Wire rigging is known for its relatively straightforward installation process, making it accessible to yacht owners with fundamental knowledge and skills. With the right tools and guidance, rigging replacement or upgrades can be completed efficiently, minimizing downtime, and ensuring a smooth sailing experience. At Advanced Rigging & Hydraulics, we regularly manufacture wire rigging for clients to install themselves, or with the assistance of a local rigger, and can deliver to locations across the UK if they are not local to the Solent.

Rod rigging and most composite standing rigging will require professional installation due to specialised construction methods and tensioning processes to maximise performance. Advanced Rigging & Hydraulics provides installation services ensuring the rig is perfectly tuned and are approved agents working with BSI, OYS, Navtec by Hayn and Future Fibres.

Maintenance and Inspections

As with all parts of your yacht, keeping up with an appropriate maintenance schedule for your standing rigging is important to minimise downtime and keep your rig performing as it should. Take the time to perform regular visual inspections, and if you notice your sailing performance change, consider if it could be a sign of a problem developing in your rig set up.

Wire rigging requires regular inspection and maintenance to prevent corrosion and fatigue failure, and regular visual rig checks coupled with detailed annual inspections should be undertaken, likely required by the yacht’s insurer. However, compared to other rigging materials, such as rod or composite rigging, wire rigging maintenance is generally more accessible and cost-effective, making it a practical choice for sailors seeking reliability and ease of upkeep.

Rod rigging also requires regular inspections, particularly of the rod heads and recommended intervals are for an inspection and retune after 4-6 months for the first installation, and annual inspections/ services every 12 months which can be done with the mast in situ. After 5 years, a partial service involving unstepping the mast and stripping and cleaning the rigging is advised. At this stage reheading of all diagonals and fore and aft rigging is recommended. All other rod heads and fittings will be cleaned, and polished and have non-destructive testing (NDT) performed. Further work or re-heading may be required subject to the results of NDT.

Composite cables will require visual inspection and proof testing during the recommended service intervals in the same manner as rod rigging. It is recommended that all Kevlar cables be replaced at five years, or earlier if there are any indications that the cable has been damaged. Cables with no known service history will be recommended for replacement. For other composite stays, do speak to a professional rigger for advice to ensure you keep up with recommended guidelines.

Servicing and Upgrades for a Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 54 in Spain

We recently carried out comprehensive servicing and upgrades on a two-year-old Beneteau Yacht 54 bought new from Ancasta, currently based in La Linea, Spain. Our dedicated Project Manager, Tom Cload, oversaw the entire operation, ensuring a seamless process for the owner.

A trained Engineer flew out to the yacht to carry out annual servicing on the winches, heads, engine, generator, props, stern gear, rudder bearings, and seacocks. One of our Senior Technicians also fitted a new washing machine, bilge pump, and watermaker, while an experienced Rigger from Advanced Rigging and Hydraulics checked the rig, tightened stanchions and installed a new Reckmann furler.

The owner was delighted with the service. By entrusting their yacht to Ancasta’s trained team, they had the ease and reassurance that everything would be carried out efficiently and hassle-free.

More young cancer survivors will be inspired to believe in a brighter future this year with Ancasta’s ongoing support of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust

After young people have come sailing with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, they often say the same thing: ‘we’re all in the same boat’. It is a brilliant pun that never gets old, but there is a lot more to it than just physically sharing a space on board the charity’s yachts.

Cancer is an isolating illness, especially as a young person. At a time of their lives when they are discovering who they are, everything goes on hold, friends leave them behind, their studies suffer, and how they feel towards their own body can be negatively affected.

When faced with something as scary as a cancer diagnosis, even a young person’s identity can take a back seat too. The lifestyles they long to lead and the communities they wish to be a part of are out of reach.

That is why the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, which inspires young people aged 8-24 to believe in a brighter future living through and beyond cancer, knows being given the ‘all clear’ after treatment ends does not mean everything goes back to normal. Their new normal is unfamiliar, and most of their friends and families cannot relate to what they have been through.

So, when young people say they are all ‘in the same boat’ while sailing with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, what do they mean? Besides all being part of a young crew, living and sleeping on and learning how to sail 45ft yachts, of course.

Not alone

For 15-year-old Libby, diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2021, it was simple: “I’ve learned I’m not alone here.”

Set to enjoy her third sailing adventure this summer, she said: “There are people here who have been through similar things, and they know how it is. At home, there are people you can’t relate to. I’d been struggling in school with speaking up in class, and the confidence boost from sailing has really helped me with that and to talk about things more.”

The same is true for 22-year-old Omar. He was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in 2016 but found talking about it impossible. He said: “Male friends don’t really sit down and have long conversations about what they’re going through. We don’t talk about the issue, we just make jokes and have a laugh about it. At the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, there’s more to it. You get to talk and to open up.”

For Libby, Omar, and hundreds more young people, it is the first time they have felt understood. Accepted. Relaxed. Able to talk openly about their experience with others who ‘get it’. Free of the pressure to tiptoe around the subject for fear of upsetting others.

This is why Dame Ellen MacArthur says her cancer trust is not about sailing, but that sailing is the perfect vehicle for the magic that happens on board. It’s what the camaraderie leads to that inspires young people to believe in a brighter future.

“It’s been really cathartic,” said 26-year-old Jessica, who also had leukaemia. “During my treatment, I never met people my own age who’ve been through the same experience. I wanted to connect with people, and I have.

“We’re literally all in the same boat.”

I could be myself

The feeling that everyone is in this together is what led Lauren to discover more about herself. Now 27 years old, and a volunteer for the charity, she was first supported in 2014 after being diagnosed with metastatic alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma – a type of soft tissue tumour.

She said: “When I was going through treatment, the last thing I was thinking about was my own personal life, my sexuality, boyfriends, girlfriends, which all my friends were doing at the time.

“I didn’t come out until I was 19 or 20, and the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust helped me know who I was as a person because I could be myself. I didn’t have to pretend that I didn’t have cancer, or I wasn’t gay, I could just be me and that was great.”

According to research carried out by Young Lives vs Cancer, 70% of young people with cancer experience depression during treatment, 90% have anxiety, and 83% feel lonely. That is why bringing them together is vital: not only do they share an experience of cancer, but they have all faced other challenging hurdles during and after treatment. To all be in the same boat means to look around and realise everyone knows what that is like.

And it works. Even at just 9 years old, Fergus, who was also diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, said: “We were only together for four days and we all felt like friends instantly.” Sailing is fun and exciting. For many young people supported by the charity, joy has been missing in their lives too, and together is how they rediscover it.

Speaking about the first time she stepped foot on a boat, Dame Ellen said: “I completely fell in love with the freedom and feeling of connectedness the sea provides. Sailing gives everyone the chance to find out what they are capable of, alongside others who completely understand what they have been through.”

Which sums up ‘in the same boat’ perfectly. The sea is the perfect setting. After cancer, sailing with other young people is freedom, connection, and a chance to rediscover life – together.
