The eye-shaped mark on the peacock tail indicates opening your third eye Chakra, discovering your psychic gifts, and reconnecting with your higher self. When you look at the Shamanic traditions, the Peacock animal spirit is a healer. The white peacock has the ability to teach us to use our undiscovered abilities and expand our spiritual vision. According to Christian traditions, the peacock is a sign of rebirth, renewal, and rejuvenation. It stands for immortality. Christians sometimes use this bird to teach on the concept of death and resurrection, with the emphasis being on the resurrection part of it and as we approach the Easter season we use it as a reminder of the glory of immortality. The peacock’s feathers were highly valued in the Egyptian’s religious ceremonies. Ancient Egyptian traditions linked the peacock to the eye of Horus, the sun god. Astara’s new location identifies as a city where peacocks freely roam and we couldn’t be more pleased- as Astara moves forward, resurrected to continue the work into the Aquarian age.

The iconic ankh of Astara: so important it graces every cover of the Book of Life Degree Lessons, and has since 1955. We have no known record of how the ankh symbol became the identifying marker for the books that would travel numerous oceans and become a compass for seekers and readers worldwide. We have no notes from the founders or messages from the Masters on why or how the ankh meandered its way into becoming the face of the important Astara teachings. We can only rely on what we do know and what has been written, and illustrated, collectively, by Earlyne and Robert, regarding the ankh. Here, the question of, “Why the ankh?” is examined through the pages of the Degree Lessons and the supplemental books with an attempt to understand the mystic ankh and its role in Astara.

HISTORY The ankh is commonly defined as an Egyptian hieroglyphic symbol meaning “life”. It was used in writing and in art and features a cross shape with a tear drop loop replacing the upper bar. In Latin it is referred to as the Crux Ansata, or handle shaped cross. It was a tool of the gods and Osiris, Anubis, Isis, Ma’at, and Ra are often depicted holding the ankh in tomb paintings of ceremony and afterlife. Pharaohs and kings and important religious figures from Egyptian life (and death) are shown with the ankh as talisman for protection and immortality. In the 4th century the Coptic Christians adopted the symbol, recognizing the loop as a sign of eternal life, (Christ’s resurrection) atop the cross (Christ’s sacrifice).* Beyond the covers, in Astara, the ankh first appears inside the Book of Life First Degree Lesson 2. It is predominantly (and happily) displayed hanging by a chain around Earlyne Chaney’s neck in a photo showing the Padmasana position for meditation. It reappears in the twenty-first Lesson, The First Step Towards Rebirth wherein an illustration depicts a celestial guardian, or guardian angel assisting with the task of the soul’s new incarnation. He holds an ankh, although it is never referred to, in the selection process and creation of the soul’s destiny. The celestial guardian is described as a Being from a place way more advance than our own and an activator of the soul’s energy bodies. The Science of Rebirth is outlined and the quest to continue the search is hailed as the Crux Ansate, Initiatory Symbolism for the Cross of Life that gleams upon the heart of the First Degree graduate.

INITIATION In its simplest form, initiation is merely the act of beginning something. In the Astara, School initiation “Guides the seeker toward the inner mysteries of life, death, God, humankind and the ultimate initiaton: immortality.” Degree Lesson 1. In ancient Egyptian times, 3rd dynasty, Zoser’s step pyramid housed an initiation school called Asta-Ra and its purpose was to initiate seekers of Light into the great mysteries. It is here that the current Astara School originates with the highest calling of Man Know Thyself. In the ancient Melchizedek Order the ankh was embellished with a crystal and used for healing-or disabling an enemy. Its power was a mini ark of the covenant and is similar to today’s lasers: some used for healing some for destruction. Some powerful ankhs could be the Light of the Holy Grail used to activate the bliss centers in the brain for enlightenment. In other words, transmuting one from “man-to-godlike.”

HEALING The next appearance of the ankh in the Degree Lessons pertains to healing, the eye rays and the unfolding of the third eye. The Second degree lessons teach of the white Light healing energy and the use of a Master teacher to concentrate upon to increase healing energy. The illustration on p16 Lesson 11 shows a picture of a Master holding an ankh and used as a shrine in healing temples so magnetic rays of the eyes could transmit increased healing energy. The round part of the ankh, symbolically representing the sun on the horizon, represents the regenerative solar Prana of the sun as a symbol of Light and solar vitalization. Sixth Degree Lesson 11. The Eighth Degree Lesson 10, we learn the ankh was laid over the heart of solar plexus of the ill person helping to restore the body to a vigorous state of health. By holding the oval part of the ankh the healer is pointing the other end towards the patient thus using the feminine oval as receptor and elongate masculine point directing and disbursing healing energy. The ankh becomes a powerful healing tool in the right hand, a literal Staff of Life. OPENING THE THIRD EYE AND THE LAWS OF POLARITY Opening of the Third Eye is a result of transmuting energy from lower to higher. A “seeing” of godly worlds results. The polarity of the ankh shape is symbolic of the feminine and masculine. The oval is feminine and the crossbar, masculine. The positive and negative, the yin and yang, human and God, all representing the forces of creation. The law of polarity and the law of magnetism are used for creation. The ankh being, perhaps, Astara’s reminder to create heaven on earth through spiritual transmutation? Oftentimes, spiritual awakenings are described as magnetic in nature. There are numerous times, where Earlyne and Robert Chaney speak of this “lightning” or “magnetic” experience in their writings regarding different states of consciousness. The Seventh Degree Lessons explains the Law of Dualities and its importance In Astara practices and human evolution and the immortality of the soul. Ancient ankhs lost their magnetic forces when the profane and dark forces prevailed over the Prana of the alchemist initiate, a spiritual shifting of polarities. The laws of life force generated in the ankh are based entirely upon natural law-however the relationship to the natural laws changes. Are we in a time again in the Aquarian Age where the power of the ankh can be returned? “In the Eighth Degree Lesson 19, it is suggested the ankh be used as an amulet when Astral traveling or “opening the third eye” for protection. It is recommended that the ankh be blessed by higher forces to be again, called upon for guidance. With the power of a true alchemist, (one who purifies base energy to noble energy) the ankh becomes a rod of mystical power and staff of life, used to heal and so powerful it could destroy or restore life, but Mystically symbolic of eternality and immortality. *** The Astara Book of Life Degree Lessons, began as a journey of self realization, based on a yearning to understand life, death and the afterlife. The ankh, in its various applications, symbolizing immortality, remains the ultimate metaphor for Astara.

As your own priest or priestess you become the transmuter of energy. Your spiritual pursuit is the path and you become the Light. Close your eyes. Turn your attention to the center of your head ... the area of the mystic Third Eye. To locate this center, imagine a thread running straight through both ears, and another down through the top of the head. Where these two threads would cross is the point on which to concentrate. Realize, however, this point is only symbolic of a gateway, and you should strive to go ever deeper ... deeper ... deeper ...

As you focus attention upon this inner point, begin a mental chant of the word AUM with each outgoing breath. Do not chant the word aloud, only mentally. Do not allow your mind to wander from the repetition of this word. The breath will become slower, more rhythmic. Outer thoughts will crowd upon you. Dismiss them. Hold steadily to your chant ... and always listen, listen, listen. Deep, deeper, still deeper in the head. Your aim is to tune in upon the Holy Nahd, the Soundless Sound, and traveling the soundwave of the AUM path is the surest way to reach it.

Listen, meditate, and control the mind as long as you can do so without becoming fatigued, holding to your concentration on the word AUM and chanting it mentally with each outgoing breath. You may be able to sit for only a brief time in the beginning, but as you practice you will be able to sit longer. An hour is not too long, although you will need to attain this longer period gradually.

P R E S E N T D AY C E R E M O NY Ceremony and Ritual Revival Many of the present day ceremonies in Orthodox Christianity are empty of power. They do not put the recipient in touch with God because the individual performing the ceremony has grown so accustomed to the mechanical performance that it no longer generates an inner stirring of cosmic forces. It is important therefor, that Astrians balance the flow of spiritual power with the use of spiritual ceremonies. There can be tremendous value in rituals if we can find the key that “Stirs up the gift of God” within us. Ritual and ceremony can unlock mental powers.

2nd Degree LESSON 16, SALVATION AND MYSTIC CHRISTIANITY: To some the Christian-Judaic Bible is a mountain of confusion, to others an eternal monument of spirituality. It is indeed a book of Mysteries, and its dramas when rightly understood reveal life’s significance. The Mechanics of What and How We Are Doing During Ceremony An Interview with Greg Toews by Valarie Anderson

VA: How does ceremony shift us out of form to manifest the essence of higher vibration? Greg: We might use the word spiritual or the word Light, but what we are talking about when we are taking about Light, is essence. Essence is part of the creative process but so is form and if you look at it from the Asian prospective of Ying and Yang- which in that philosophy-produces all phenomenon in the Universe, it is the play between essence and form. So form is how our brain works. We focus on a particular thing or object even if we think of a goal we don’t think of the goal so much we do the process. And the process becomes more of a form rather than an essence. The form becomes the strategy for you to achieve your goal and when things come about that make you change or shift that strategy you, become very one pointed. When it comes to sticking to the process, you don’t allow for there to be an evolutionary process. This is very much how certain parts of how our brain works. If it was more essence it would be more spontaneous. When a perspective shift comes up, you would go with it and take different steps. With Yin and Yang -Yin is form. It is black. Essence or Yang, is white. Whenever you think of one of these aspects in the extreme it produces the opposite. So when you think of form for a long period of time, ie. your goal or the strategy ,it starts to attract the essence that passes through that form. If that essence is low vibration or is filled with self hate for example, you attract an essence that directly corresponds to the form.

VA: So how do we shift that? Greg: We are constantly trying to have essence pass through form. We want to raise the vibration of the form by raising the essence we are attracting. The Essence is what we call Light. If we are able to let go of the form sometimes so we can attract a different type of essence than that of our normal, everyday, way of thinking, or predetermined beliefs and we are able to step away a little bit like we do when we meditate or when we chant mantra, we start to attract a different kind of essence that, as it passes through the form, it helps us change the form and evolve in some way. Then, even if we get focused on the form more, we are attracting a higher vibration of essence. Remember, when we talk about essence we are talking about Light. And when we are talking about Form, it is condensed Light that’s been structured and organized in a particular way. The purpose of ceremony Is to bring in Light and to reorganize or restructure how that Light has been condensed. You are basically scrambling things up, so that like a Phoenix, you rise above the ashes and say OK this is a new, “Higher Vibration Me.”

VA: Let’s discuss the Light and what is means to be realized in this context? Greg: Light happens in stages. What is it to be realized? There are several degrees of realization The self, the incarnated soul, the higher soul and the divine spark, which is above the higher soul. But there are actually simpler mechanics. When you start to become aware of the Light, the first phase or stage is you’re starting to becoming aware of an inner Light. You are aware of the Light within you and when you become aware of the Light within you, you also become aware of the Light of developed intellect. Developed intellect is actually tied to intuitive intelligence. It is the ability to process spontaneous flashes of wisdom and process it into direct action. In the alchemical tradition they referent to this as the phosphorous of the intellect. Things start to change, your emotions regulate, you have more insight you see the bigger picture to a higher degree and then you shift to being aware of the light within. Then you become aware of the Light that flows through nature. The Light that helps the evolutionary process on earth, that flows through the external. The creative process is seeing the Light that helps the evolutionary process through humanity, animals, plants. We then we become aware of the Light of God. The Divine Light so even when we are experiencing Light not all Light is the same. We want to keep expanding and keep having more and more higher vibrations of essence. I see Light in myself, I see Light in the external environment and then have the awareness of the Light of God. You start to have a greater union with God. So ceremony and its various tools, help cultivate the Light in each of these aspects, You are shifting away from the essence that is attracting the old forms and you are cultivating an essence of a Higher Nature. So at first you experience inner peace. Then you start to become aware of things in the world and the by-product of that awareness is being able to produce a result like: patience ,loving kindness, tolerance and thus we start to have our foot in the divine world. The Spiritual world. Basically Heaven on Earth.

P R A N AYA M A BREATH CONTROL TO OVERCOME FATIGUE & BUILD UP QUICK ENERGY Pranayama-brearth control- is a certain methodology for balancing the lifeflow through the meridians, removing fatigue, relaxing tension and completely energizing the body. Try the following for overcoming fatigue and building up quick energy:

Sit crosslegged in an easy pose, either on a chair or the floor. Place palms together over the diaphragm with the fingers pointed upward in the prayer pose. Exhale vigorously through opened pursed lips, first with long “puffs,” then with shorter, exhaling all stale air from the lungs. Inhale, sniffing air in through the nose. On each of the exhalation puffs and inhalation sniffs, pull the navel in sharply with in-out pumping movements simultaneous with the breath. Repeat for several breaths, then inhale deeply, pressing the palms together with extreme force while retaining the breath. Hold as long as comfortable, then exhale vigorously through the mouth and relax by lying flat on your back on the floor in the yogic Shavasana pose (the “corpse” pose). Let go the tension in every muscle and deliberately force the body to remain still for several moments, feeling the inflow of new energies and White Light. Remain at least two minutes, then take a few deep breaths, stretch and return to your activities. You will find your body completely invigorated with energy and mental alertness restored. If you wish, mentally repeat your favorite mantra or affirmation as you lie quietly in Shavasana, inhaling and exhaling.

Initiation in the Great Pyramid was written to fully explain the occurrences and past life initiation Earlyne underwent.
