MARTIN TOBIN SHARES HIS VIEWS AND SELECTS HIS ALL TIME FAVOURITE STREET XI TO TAKE ON THE BEST!
Name: Martin Tobin
Age: 59
Where do you watch games from: Mainly from behind the goal, but sometimes from the main stand.
First game: The first game I watched would have been up at London Road, it was a long time ago. They didn’t have their own ground or clubhouse like we have now. They would play on pitch number 2 and Mick O’Connor was manager at the time.
First memory: Playing for the Street and going to East Cowes on a cold early January game in the Hampshire League, which we won 1-0 but nobody wanted to play as it was so cold!
Best goal seen: The best goal for me was Ily Warshow’s winner in the North Hants Cup final a couple of years ago against Alresford Town at the Camrose Basingtoke. There was good build up to that goal and young Ily took the goal well.
Best match witnessed: It would have to be my last game for New Street A. Nick Richmond was manager of the side. I think I was about 35 or 36. I was playing at the back and we were underdogs against Wallop. We won the game 2-1, we found out the Wallop side had booked the following day off work so they could celebrate that night. It never happened as we beat them and we played tremendously well and with so much spirit and character. We were fortunate on a few occasions but we deserved that as the team were absolutely brilliant. That will always stick in my memory as it was my final appearance in the green and black. The worst match: The worst match for me was the game against Cowes I mentioned earlier. It was freezing cold day and it was touch and go with the pitch conditions. The atmosphere was very poor, nobody wanted to play, even the referee wasn’t very keen but the game went ahead and there wasn’t much football and a lot of arguments going on during and after the game.
Best Individual performance by a player: Best performance I’ve seen was by Dave Bird. He was a towering centre half at New Street. He was captain of the team and he was the master and just superb and drive the team really well. He would always give 110 %. He was Mr New Street at the time but it would be close between him and Dave Selby, who was as hard as nails in the midfield.
Favourite Street kit: The home green and black stripes. I love all the green and black kits. Although its important from a financial point of view to have a sponsor, for as long as the kit is green and black then thats the most important thing to me. .
Favourite All-Time Player: That a tough one to answer but I’d have to go for Dave Selby. Again his attitude was top class and he wanted to win. He gave you everything he had when he stepped over that white line onto the pitch. To me, he would always be first on the team sheet. I could name a few others including Dave Bird, Steve Brown, Dave Murphy and Sean Rodgers.
I love New Street because... it’s provided me with the opportunity, and ambition to be involved with a great club that’s moving in the right direction. It has a fantastic set of people working within the club and its helping move the club forward.

MARTIN’S ALL TIME NEW STREET XI:
GK: IAN BARTON Always reliable, fantastic goalkeeper. Great shot stopper. He had great hands and unbelievable distribution. Was a great organiser of the defence and talker in the side.
RB: DANNY FIELD I like Danny Field, I think he’s brilliant. He’s reliable. Comfortable on the ball and very good with his distribution. Again he’s a talkative player. He doesn’t waste passes and is a great tackler.
RIGHT BACK | DANNY FIELD LB: PAUL REIDY Brilliant on the ball, great distribution and hardly gave the ball away. He was a clever player and worked hard for the team.
CB: STEVE BROWN (C) Top quality centre back. Outstanding when he played for the club. Would dominate a game and is a great player, especially when you consider the difficult times the side had when he played.
CB: DAVE BIRD As I mentioned earlier, he was a towering centre back and formed an excellent partnership with Steve Brown. Hardly anything would get past those two on the pitch.. An excellent captain and his leadership skills were second to none. I wouldn’t give him the title of “Mr New Street” for nothing! RW: ALAN KENNEDY Class player, very good on the ball. Had loads of energy. Provided and created chances for the sides he played for. And he could also score goals by cutting in from the right wing.
CM: DAVE MURPHY I grew up with Dave and played football with him. Very commanding and very good on the ball. He was solid, He was the midfield general in any side he played for.
CM: DAVE SELBY As I’ve said he was my favourite all time player I can’t really leave him out can i? His attitude during the game was exceptional and that desire to win would make him instrumental to my dream team!
LM: GUNNER YATES I like Gunner. I think Gunner on his day is the best I’ve ever seen in that position and in this league. Ability wise he is unbelievable and if he comes on he can change a game and certainly influence a match with his wing play and ability to take a man on.
ST: SEAN ROGERS Big, strong lad. He was excellent in the air and could hold the ball up really well. He would score goals for fun and he’s an excellent striker.
ST: VINNIE RUSHER Vinnie had that ability to destroy defenders. He could take defenders on and fantastic ability to cross the ball. He’s shooting skills were also exceptional and would always hit the target.
MANAGER: MICK O’CONNOR Great manager, he was really good with the players. He knew football and had been around the game for a long time and at the top level. He always treated the players with respect but also let them know what he expected from them at the same time. He was never afraid of talking to players in the right manner. A very nice guy as well.

The Street were defeated at home against a strong Alton side 4-2, ten days ago despite taking an early lead.
Danny Urry was adjudged to have been fouled when he was shaping up to shoot, just ten minutes into the first half. Urry took the spot kick and sent Alton keeper Kieron Greene the wrong way.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/201026210701-43a4a78a4a0c05ad61df81e3ca3fb820/v1/eaee357b99086adb629c517711579da1.jpg?width=720&quality=85%2C50)
Before that the Street were dealt a blow when captain Matt Scott went off injured in the 7th minute and was replaced by Kai Sterne, with Max Allen dropping back into defence and Scott Kinge moving back into central midfield.
Alton equalised through right winger Luke Perkins who hit an unstoppable effort across the goal and in off the far post.
The Brewers took the lead just four minutes after halftime when Liam Knight scored. But the Street immediately got back on level terms through Brett Denham.

Alton re-took the lead in the 62nd minute through Scott Sandersen and the same player made it 4-2 when he met a high cross from Perkins to head past Sean O’Brien to secure the points for the Brewers.

The Street suffered heartbreak when a dramatic injury time equaliser from Fawley denied the Street taking home all three points after dominating the second half.

The first half was fairly uneventful with few opportunities at either end. Mikey Davis having the Streets best opportunity when he broke free on the left but fired wired of the target.
The second half started in the pouring rain but the Street took the lead five minutes into the second half when Scott Kinge rose highest to head towards goal, only to see his effort pushed away by the Fawley keeper, straight into Shane Lock’s path for him to score into the empty net.

The Street went onto to create a hatful for chances but couldn’t get the second goal to secure the win, despite hitting the woodwork and new signing Cameron Rohart-Brown going close with two freekicks.

Fawley offered very little threat in the second half until in injury time they forced a corner and with their keeper up in the box the ball found its way into the bottom corner and the points shared on a miserable afternoon.

GOAL? The North Hants Senior Cup Final against Alresford Town in 2019. Being the underdogs, it was a great game to be a part of and retaining the cup. BACK2BACK! TEAM: Man United MOVIE: The Lost Boys MEAL: Steak & Chips

Eagle IT Support also boasts a very successful service portfolio, where local businesses are offered instant telephone support and remote access to their computers, thus reducing the down time of their employees. In addition to this support, a Eagle IT Support engineer can also attend the customer’s premises and work directly on the PC, thereby identifying any potential issues.

PETE TUNNEY
Good afternoon and welcome to today’s match against Alton.
From time to time I will look at different types of injuries that can occur on the football pitch and how best to treat and recover from them. This week I’m looking at OsgoodSchlatter’s Disease.
This is a condition where the attachment of the patella tendon to the tibia becomes inflamed. The tendon attachment is situated over a growth plate of the tibia.
Excessive use of the quadriceps muscles will stress the tendon attachment and growth plate, producing inflammation. The cause is likely to be over use, and is most common in active boys aged between 10 and 16.
Generally this condition does not occur after growth ceases.

Symptoms
Pain during and after activity at the tendon attachment.
Local swelling and tenderness.
Treatment
Rest. This will allow inflammation and pain to settle.
Modified activity – avoid movements which reproduce pain.
Ice. Apply ice for 10 – 15 minutes every two hours.
Stretch. Begin stretching exercises to increase the length of the quadriceps muscles. These should be performed regularly and within the pain-free range of movement.
To perform this stretch, balance on the unaffected leg, pulling the heel of your other leg towards tour bottom.
Keep your knees close together and your hips pushed forwards. Hold the stretch for the 30 seconds and repeat five times.
Returning to activity should be a gradual process. This condition generally heals spontaneously, but problems can recur if the tendon is stressed further.
Enjoy the game.

LEAGUE LOOK
THE LATEST IN SYDENHAMS WESSEX LEAGUE
In the bread and butter world of the Premier Division, the much anticipated game between Lymington and Fareham was disappointingly a late call off due to covid-19 issues in the home camp, where perhaps more notice could have been given.

Moving on to games played now, and we’ll start in the top flight. The northern outpost of Calthorpe Park saw a 4-1 away win for Hamworthy United, with Cameron Munn leading the way with a hat trick for the Hammers. Dan Cann also found himself on the scoresheet for the third time this week, in a win that sees the Hammers hit top spot with Fareham inactive. Taylor Watts notched a late consolation strike for Fleet. At our other northerly club, it was honours even between Tadley Calleva and Portland United. Ryan McKechnie leveled the contest for the visitors after a long trip, Josh Drew having put the hosts ahead.
On the south coast we head to Portsmouth, where Baffins Milton Rovers netted three without reply against Bournemouth. All goals here came in the second half with Josh Warren, Tommy Scutt and Blu Boam finding the target.
Whilst on that area, Brockenhurst won by the odd goal of three at AFC Portchester in front of the biggest gate of the day, 240. Brad Magookin hitting a double- one in each half for the Badgers, whilst Barry Mason was the Portchester marksman. On the artificial surface at Stoneham Lane, it was a 6-0 win for AFC Stoneham against Bashley, with Duarte Martins and Nathan Clements both bagging braces for the Purples. Scott Hills set the ball rolling with a 19th minute penalty and Will Wiseman was also on target. Christchurch got back to winning ways with a 3-1 win coming at Hamble Club. Max Wilcock, Kyle Graham and Ash Pope with the goals. New boy Mitch Byrne for the Monks with an added time strike in the first half. The final game in the Premier was on the Waterside where 78 witnessed Blackfield & Langley hit four without reply against Alresford. Connal Morrison hit a double for the hosts after River Smith had given them the lead, with Dom Panesar-Dower also on the scoresheet.
In Division One, the game at Ringwood was abandoned after around an hour, with torrential rain the cause. Bemerton were 1-0 up through a 22nd minute strike from Kane O’Keefe. Nearby New Milton Town went down 3-1 at home against Folland Sports, with Chris Long on target for the Linnets and Matt Casey, Clayd Roach and James Thomson for the Planemakers.
Another host team on the losing list saw Downton defeated by Whitchurch 3-2. Matt Palmer and Ben Smith for the Robins with George Bishop, from the penalty spot, Harry Edmondson and Joe Western getting the points for the Jamboys. Petersfield Town also enjoyed a win by the same score at Totton & Eling, Bailey Newbury with a hat trick for the Rams. Danny Clarke and James Matthews with the goals for the Millers.
Honours even at Andover Town against Hythe & Dibden. Town went ahead through Ben Emans before Mig Dark earned the visitors a point. It was also one apiece at Fawley where a late Declan Hartigan goal earned the oilers a point against Andover New Street who led from a Shane Lock strike early in the second half.
Alton grabbed the points in a 1-0 win over Romsey Town with Matt Graham getting the goal towards the end of the first half, the gate of 161 being the best of the bunch in Division One. Laverstock & Ford maintained a ten point lead at the top of the Division with a 4-0 win over East Cowes Vics. The scorers seem somewhat familiar now, namely Jake Rawkins, Chae Sykes and Russell Jones (2).
Lastly for the weekend and the only game on the Isle of Wight was at Beatrice Avenue, where United Services Portsmouth beat Newport 3-0. Dec Seiden, Tyler Moret and Tom Cain earning the visitors the points.
