Welcome to the first issue of the new look Fastlane – the former newsletter, now magazine for ANDRA members and for all those interested in drag racing in Australia. There hasn’t been a Fastlane newsletter in mailboxes for some time now, so we hope this new look comes as a surprise and as a standard we can hold into the future for your organisation. The objective for this shift is to give the sport a journal it can be proud of, one that brings the personalities of the sport to light and shows off the sport in the best way possible. Some people say drag racing is the best kept secret in motorsports. It shouldn’t be that way - we need to be out shouting from the rooftops about the sport and getting people interested. ANDRA as a body needs to do that but it also requires its participants and fans to become brand ambassadors, carrying good news about the sport and encouraging people to start racing or see events. Fastlane will serve that need. Remember why you first became
involved or why you love drag racing so much? We’re all in this for fun; with a few of our members who have been lucky enough to be able to do it professionally. Part of that fun, at least for me, is the excitement in seeing a racer make a record pass or win a close race. It’s a thrill most of the readers of Fastlane will have experienced or witnessed and it’s part of what makes drag racing so addictive. That’s something we will aim to convey. Fastlane is also part of increasing communication to members. It provides another avenue and another touch point by which our members can be informed, adding to other outlets such as andra.com.au, our member emails and social media. Better communication is a frequent request from members. As an organisation, it is not possible to release everything that goes on in head office and most members understand that, but where changes do affect the membership then we will improve our communication. Let us
know if there’s an area you feel does not get enough attention. But we do also rely on members reading the material they get sent and checking the website regularly – we can’t force people to read everything! In this way communication is very much a two way street. Some people ask why the same teams keep going on the website and most of the time it’s because they are the ones taking the time to send information through and putting themselves out there. There is a feature on Darren Morgan in this issue. One of the strengths of his team has been in its off-track promotion. One quote perhaps sticks out - “We have to educate people that this is the loudest, baddest sport on the planet.” I know it is, you know it is. So tell your friends, tell your enemies, tell your neighbours, tell your colleagues, tell your family that drag racing is awesome and take them to an event. They might just be a racer in waiting.

aeRofloW to sponsor sportsman series Aeroflow Performance Products and the Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA) are proud to announce that Aeroflow will be the new naming rights sponsor for the ANDRA Sportsman Drag Racing Series. Formerly known as the Rocket Allstars Racing Series, the series will now be known as the Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship. The partnership with Rocket paid out some $300,000 to racers over six seasons and Aeroflow Performance Products managing director Graeme Cowin said he was thrilled about the announcement for the new branding of the series. “For six years we have sponsored the ANDRA sportsman series through the Rocket Allstar Racing Series and we felt that Rocket had reached its maximum exposure through having the naming rights of the series so the time was right for Aeroflow to take over the naming rights,” Cowin said. “With the rebranding of the series to the Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship we feel that this brings even more prestige for racers and on behalf of everybody at Aeroflow I would like to wish all the participants the best of luck for the season.” The Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship starts at the Australian Nationals at Sydney Dragway on November 2, 2012 and will

almost double the amount of tracks it attends this year including Portland (VIC), Alice Springs (NT), Benaraby (NQ) and Mildura (VIC). ANDRA CEO Malcolm Bulley said the support of Rocket had been instrumental in growing the sportsman series and with Aeroflow now coming onboard opportunities for sportsman racers would continue to increase. “The expansion of the Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship this season into new markets is exciting for many of our members who will now have opportunities to score national points,” he said. “We thank Aeroflow Performance Products for taking up the naming rights to the series and look forward to working with them to promote it around the country. staging stagingla Tell us a bit about your background in drag racing.
The australian national drag Racing association recently announced its new ceo, Mal Bulley, who will take on the role from august 6. Mal is not only experienced in the business world but also in drag racing as a competitor himself. We got Mal to answer some questions on his role and where he would like to take drag racing in the future.
I started competitive racing over 20 years ago down at Ravenswood, south of Perth. I was a spectator for a few years and had a couple of projects which were never completed for one reason or another (mainly moving with work). My first altered was purchased as an incomplete project out of NSW, with a Cleveland/ Powerglide combo which ran in the nine second zone. I had a fantastic time in Modified for many years. That old altered ended up around a tree in the Ravenswood braking area! From there it was another altered which was Cleveland powered until I came across a 500ci Pro Stock motor. The math worked out to a high 6 so it seemed like a great idea at the time. It bucked and stood up like a rodeo bull until we worked out how to get it down the track and ended up in the low sevens. I went through one more 500ci motor before moving onto the current car which was purpose built by Ian Jenkins in Perth with a 427ci supercharged small block Chev. We only really touched the surface with that car and put it into the 6.50s.
do you intend to keep racing? I effectively parked the car a couple of years ago. I still have everything including the transporter, however that’s on the market. It would be fair to say my personal racing will not be a priority for some time.
6 I www.andra.com.au
How will your background in motorsports assist in the role as andRa ceo? I think my background as a competitor and working on the WA ANDRA divisional council has enabled a level of currency and insight into the workings and challenges for ANDRA and more importantly the sport itself. Having said that, I believe a background of working in corporate Australia for over 20 years provides a view external to the sport which is vital. The vast majority of members have a good feel for the sport from the inside looking out and some have a good understanding both ways. We all need to be on the same page for the future of the sport. I believe there are opportunities available now and these need to be actioned as soon as possible.
What challenges do you want to address within the sport? The sport has ridden peaks and troughs of economic prosperity or difficulty, personal achievement, diverse and decentralised competition across many areas, regulation and government investment. ANDRA has recently undergone some of the biggest changes since its inception as an association - the change to a limited company was an objective for the organisation for many years. This change was accompanied by a strategic review of the organisation and its objectives. The ANDRA National Control Council drove
anes this process and most outcomes were reconfirmation of previous discussions and ambitions of the NCC. Goals and aspirations can only be realised with planned timelines and milestones, unfortunately there have been a number of false starts which due to a wide variety of reasons have not fully realised their objectives. Some of these initiatives have very sound business cases and for any of these to succeed the members need to have the utmost trust that what we are doing will benefit the sport. Trust is built on transparency of relative information, engagement and feedback. Not everyone will agree with everything however if we have been through a process of engagement with the right people, robust discussion and agreed positioning the outcome will be superior. Division is our enemy right now and I believe ANDRA needs to set the direction in cooperation with stakeholders across the board. The services ANDRA provides on behalf of the members needs to improve and the value proposition needs to be proven time and time again. In the interim there are a number of issues which need to be addressed for the sake of the ongoing sport. The calendar and rule book need to be best practise and need urgent review. The brand and awareness are the responsibility of ANDRA, venues promote events and individual racers promote themselves. Is there a level of cross over and duplication? Yes, there has to be to make it work. Do we sometimes cannibalise each other? Directly and indirectly, absolutely. Is the sum of individual effort greater than a cooperative movement? No, some individuals have done great things in this sport, mostly unrewarded or unrecognised, however a team working together will always outperform a team of individuals working to personal
stag
agendas or not communicating to the rest of the team. The team within ANDRA needs to be a high performance one. This extends not only to head office but to the many officials and volunteers we have within the fold. This outcome will also be of high priority.
In what areas does the organisation have opportunity to grow? It depends how you define growth more members, tracks in every major capital city and regional centre, financial sustainability, awareness metrics, greater government involvement, member satisfaction survey results, greater racing incentives and so on. The simple answer is all of the above, however different people will use different measures of growth pertaining to individual objectives and at what level of involvement they have in the sport. ANDRA has very specific goals and actions which need activation, resourcing and prioritisation. Having venues operating across the country in every state and regional centre is a long term objective which gets broken down and prioritised however its important to have all these issues on the boil at the same time. We can’t afford to let one drift off or leave an issue to flounder.
How will you look to develop both the professional series and the sportsman series? There’s no doubt our professional series and specific categories within that group are the cream of the crop. In AFL for example there are the junior feeder categories, colts, reserves, local competitions and the AFL itself. Everyone is aware of their position and its purpose. Nearly all are AFL fans and will go to watch the big games. The AFL has done wonders over the last couple of decades and grown out of sight with
Auskick, NAB Cup and development series, with all coming together to form a complex yet highly effective sport in Australia. Whether we like it or not consumers and human nature does not change dramatically just because you are a drag racer or AFL player or fans of either. All need to feel part of something bigger and more aspirational. Kids all want to play AFL alongside their heroes and our juniors have the same aspiration of driving a fuel car, or some other peak of their chosen discipline. There is no doubt the ANDRA Pro Series has suffered from division and a lack of information and direction, some members have put in a huge effort over the past few years in regards to investment, professionalism and performances. This is our premier league, the sharp end of our sport which will attract the most interest from the public, with the public interest comes associated interest from government and sponsors, no rocket science there. So what’s so hard? Our Group Two categories also have the ability to put on a huge support show and even headline a number of events in their own right and our Groups 3 and 4 probably don’t attract big numbers on the hill in their own right however when you get 300-400 cars and bikes for a big dollar shootout then it’s a spectacle which can deliver value to all involved. Depending on your view there are a number of options across the board. With unity, stakeholder involvement, communication, a sustainable model and the drive to make it work it is an achievable task to take this sport to where it needs to be. ANDRA will provide that conduit and structure for all parties.

australia’s Top fuel championship came down to the wire at the fuchs Winternationals with victoria’s darren Morgan scraping in ahead of Western australia’s damien Harris by just 1.5 points in one of the closest ever finishes for a series in the country. But just as much as he demands on track success, Morgan is searching for a way to make the dream come alive where he can race professionally and build a following for the sport he loves. Three championships, one driving for the Lamattina family and two as an owner, have been the reward so far for the Mildura local. The Top Fuel series this season has been one where consistency reigned, even though Morgan rode his fair share of luck throughout the six events.
8 I www.andra.com.au
“We don’t feel like we have been consistent this year, we started with a new car and when the tracks weren’t as good as they were at the Winternationals (where the car was first run) we struggled,” he said. “Then we got this batch of clutch discs and it changed and we struggled to get down a decent race track. Heading into next season it would be nice to test those clutch discs before we start. “These discs we had were aggressive in spots where they
shouldn’t have been. We thought we had it sorted when we went to the Fuchs Winternationals but we didn’t, at around .8 of a second it would rattle the tyres and then do the same thing later in the pass. “We were better off getting rid of those discs and going back to what we know; now when we get a new batch of discs we can get on top of it for the season.” The close competition saw some fairly quick performances such as Andrew Cowin’s 4.59 at the Fuchs Australian Nationals back in September through to Allan Dobson’s 4.64 in the final of the Winternationals. Numbers are something that will come when the time is right but for Morgan and young tuner Ben Patterson the
G

objective with each qualifying run has been to learn rather than to rotate the earth. “We’d love to run the high numbers but if we stand on it hard we can’t guarantee we will be back for the next meeting so for us it is about consistency,” he said. “Of course we’d like to run faster but Benny smacks me all the time because I tell him before each event to make the car run consistent and if I want to shoot for the stars then stop me. What we do now is settle down and try and keep the thing half decent. Fast passes will come.” Speaking of Patterson, he has been in the USA working with Clay Millican and his team on the NHRA circuit. “He’s there so we can keep up with technology, we are having a look at the
1000 feet stuff a bit as some people are trying to push the 1000 feet deal for all over Australia,” he said. “I don’t know why, maybe they are scared of the quarter mile; I think we should stay where we are. “If you want to stand on it over 1000 feet and go fast then we will hurt it. You need different intake manifolds and different blowers. “If you try and run 1000 feet at Willowbank, Perth or Sydney the crowd will feel cheated, there is no reason or mentality to bring it back to 1000 feet. They changed it for one track in America and the Americans are still sooking about it. Why would we change something that is going to upset the crowd? “But if we need to race 1000 feet to
get racing at Adelaide or Calder Park then let’s do it, people can accept that in Adelaide we have to run it due to safety.” Morgan explained that the reasoning behind some teams seeking 1000 feet racing may be because of the development route the USA is now taking. “If you bought a deal out of America and tried to run it over a quarter mile you would have all sorts of drama. But most of the teams out there are clever enough to adapt,” he said. “The noises about wanting to go to 1000 feet are probably what is all about, how do you buy a quarter mile tune up unless it’s an old one? “But it will start a new circle of pain going to 1000 feet because they FASTLANE I 9
are hurting engines all over the place and we can’t afford to run like that in Australia.” The AEG Powertools team has been big on attending non-drag racing events where they can make a big splash, such as at Bathurst or the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide. It gives Morgan a chance to spread the word about drag racing to people who may not have ever seen a nitro-fuelled dragster. “We need to get it out to the masses what this sport is really about, so if everybody was out doing the same thing we would do really well,” he said. “V8 Supercars are out everywhere, but how many times do you see a funny car or an altered or a super sedan on display? We need to get off our asses and market our own sport. “I hope it pays off for not just us but the whole sport. At Clipsal we had two cars, the one we did the burnouts with and the simulator with the data collection around it. I was able to talk a lot to the public and they were blown away. I’ve been running in this sport for so long but there are friends of mine who have never seen a fuel car in the flesh. “We have to educate people that this is the loudest, baddest sport on the planet.” The Morgan workshop is like those of many in Top Fuel in that parts like pistons and rods are considered consumables and as such are in ample supply. But among the three Top Fuel chassis and trailers is plenty of other drag racing involvement. “We still have my young bloke out there with his Junior Dragster cut to bits making changes to it, there is a blown sedan out there, a Modified car we help with for one of my crew, it’s business as usual with the Top Fuel car except this one is louder,” he said. Milestones in the life created by drag racing mean a lot for the Morgan family. “During my speech I looked at my crew thanking them for what they did but the following day after the Winters had finished I had been married for 24 years, Caitlyn was finished with Juniors because she is too old, Rory got to the semis and Will is helping in the pits putting the clutch back in the car, doing things a young man would be doing,” he said. “We can trust him
10 I www.andra.com.au
working on the car and it is cool having family around you working in different aspects of the sport. “Caitlyn’s just been signed up with a modelling agency in Adelaide, she’s going to uni there next year and is very keen to get in a fuel car but her mum is very keen to get her in a Modified car first, that’s a safety thing.” The next generation of Top Fuel racers may not necessarily come just out of Morgan’s family but also the
crew members he is helping train. As part of a relationship with Motorsport Training Australia crew members have been put on to Morgan’s team as well as those of Damien Harris and Phil Lamattina. “As more people know about what we do with the cars it will bring more people into it. There’s not too many people out there in motorsport who enjoy tearing apart a motor every run, it’s a different type of person,” he said.
There’s not too many people out there in motorsport who enjoy tearing apart a motor every run, it’s a different type of person
“But the guys really enjoy it because they get to make it happen, Top Fuel drag racing is a team sport. We lose one guy and we can’t win because you can’t make it happen. For more teams to come in this country we need a lot more people trained first.” Morgan said people interested in getting some trainees into their teams can contact Motorsport Training Australia in Wodonga for more
information. “We’re trying to expose some kids to it and show it’s not just V8 Supercars in this country. Hopefully we can lift the profile of the sport to create a career path for these kids.” The ultimate dream for Morgan is to build to a two car operation, something he considers not too difficult. “We’d like to run two cars and if anyone stepped up with enough money
we would do that. A two car deal is just a ‘more of’; it’s not 100% more,” he said. “We’ve got so many cylinder heads and racks and cars, to run just one car. It seems silly to have all this infrastructure and not have another one.” The Australian Top Fuel championship begins in Adelaide on October 20.

Rob Harrington is proof that a love of drag racing is handed down genetically.
Following in the footsteps of his father Tony, the 21 year old has carved out his own considerable accomplishment list already with two ANDRA Super Street national championship wins and two Willowbank track championships. It’s a long way to come for a young racer who started with a frequently red-lighting Holden Commodore. “If you told me at the start of the 2010/2011 season I was going to go on to win the Australian championship and the Willowbank track championship two years in a row I would have laughed in your face,” Harrington admitted. “I had attended only two bracket races and I red lit in the first round both times. I swore it wouldn’t happen again.

2 “I took in advice from my dad and from my best mate Blaze Hansen. Both have won national championships in footbrake classes so I took on board everything they had to say and implemented them. “When I was in Super Street I generally aimed for .030-050 lights. Not stunning lights but they would win 90 per cent of races. The car was deadly consistent with the 12 second motor and the 11 second motor. The car owed us $5000 as a 12 second car and won the championship.” Rob’s dad Tony was famous as part of the “Wild Bunch”, his Chev C10 ute becoming one of the iconic cars of the day (it is still campaigned by Clive Hudson in Western Australia). The car was sold when a sponsorship deal
14 I www.andra.com.au
fell through and the family became a spectating one. Though Rob was keen for a Junior Dragster, the pair waited until Rob was 17 and got the Commodore to build up as a quick street car. It runs a 355 cubic inch Holden V8 with Scat cast crank rods and pistons. Harrington says it’s making around 460 horsepower and is only revved to 6500 rpm. The Powerglide transmission built by his dad meanwhile could comfortably handle a 2000hp engine. Predictably, the urge to go faster has risen with Harrington. The first step for that is a naturally aspirated dragster which he has just begun to licence at Willowbank Raceway. Despite the A/DA signage on the side, Harrington says he won’t be
playing in Group Two yet. “That was just a little fun I thought we’d have when we brought the car out,” he said. “I could make the car competitive in Comp but it’s not what I want to do “I’ll be campaigning the car in Modified for the next season or two unless someone comes along and buys it. The reason for buying the dragster was to get used to going fast in something relativity easy to drive before stepping into my Outlaws car. I also bought it because Modified is a really competitive class with lots of very experienced drivers so I thought it would be a great challenge.” The dragster is a 2004 Spitzer running a dry-sumped Reher and Morrison 598 cubic inch big block Chev

V8 with a Callies crank, Oliver rods and A&E pistons. Harrington estimates about 1000 horsepower. The car ran a best of a 7.23 @ 297kph in America. Now back to that Outlaws car. “Dad and myself are building a VN Monaro. They never built one and dad being who he is thought let’s go do something that stands out; it’s just how he is,” Harrington said. “It’ll be running a Donovan 620 cube big block with a PSI supercharger on it. It will have twin fans and water through the heads and block as it will only be a bracket bomber. “I’ll be using a three speed Lenco with a bruno drive to run a converter. I’m aiming to run low 6.50’s with ease and be able to make the car a back to back car. I would love to drive it back once in a while purely for the crowd as well as pulling massive burnouts.” The change from a quick street car to a seven second dragster is one that is hard to put into words. But we got Harrington to do it anyway. “Before even driving the dragster I sat in it and did hundreds of dummy runs in the car straight after the Fuchs Winternationals so I was familiar with where everything was,” he said. “Going to the track I was really nervous about driving it as I didn’t know what to expect from a car that does the same time to full track as my Super Street car went to half track.
21
TWOUP AT “Once we were there and I drove the car around a little I felt comfortable and not so nervous. Sitting in the car all belted up I went through the whole procedure again. As we were heading out Blaze and Kelly (Corbett) stuck their heads in the car for some last advice and good luck. Thank God those two were there as they calmed the nerves more than I would have imagined. “During the burnout it hooked up and took off and wow this thing felt fast in top gear, was I in for a shock or what. Wait for the delay box and boom the car took off. What an assault on the senses. I’m getting jammed into the seat, my head is jammed into the cage and everything is blurry and shaky. “The car made a little move and everything shook so bad I couldn’t see so I got out of the throttle. Reflecting on the run it was only the car hitting the rev limiter as we had dropped it to 7500 rpm. “On the second run I knew what to expect. Everything goes perfectly in the burnout. I was jammed back again and this thing was flying. I was correcting the little movements the car was making before it made a large move so I backed off to 3/4 throttle then planted it again. I saw half track and pulled the chute. It took until the 1000ft marker to come out and the car went 7.735 @ 188kph.”
With plenty of driving in his future, Harrington is perhaps now not as disappointed he never got a Junior Dragster. And he’d like to buy the truck back if it ever came up for sale. “It would be a dream would be to get the truck back and return it to how dad raced it and run against him in Outlaws,” he said. “I’m hoping a sponsor would like to jump on board and help me out but for now we are only a family operation and we are having fun which is the main point. “I would like to thank mum and dad for letting me follow my dreams, Gavin Hansen and Blaze Hansen from Wizard Race products for their continued support and assistance, Craig Hasted from Craigsted performance for his support, assistance and continued advice, Pete Wells for his expertise in paint and panel work, Barry Ashen from Aerospec for his continued support, John from Performance Trans in Melbourne, Dwayne from TCE and Mark from Aussie Diffs. “Last but not least thanks to Kelly Corbett, Michaal Corbett, Scott Bettes and Mark Allan for all their advice and help when I took the dragster out.”

We are seeking more advertisers to contribute to the new Fastlane magazine. The magazine is delivered to every member of ANDRA, allowing your brand to reach a hardcore audience of drag racers. Your investment in advertising with ANDRA goes straight back into the sport, as well as delivering you access to all of Australia’s licenced drag racers. If you would like a rate sheet or to ask any questions about advertising, please send an email to info@andra.com.au or give us a call on 08 8271 5355.
FASTLANE I 29
FEATURE
TRACK
SPOTLIGHT
SUNRAYSIA STRIP MILDURA, VIC The south eastern region of Australia has a strong group of regional tracks that have been serving up some quality eighth mile racing for a bunch of dedicated racers. Sunset Strip in Mildura is one of the best examples, combining a great surface with a friendly country atmosphere on the border of Victoria and New South Wales. Recently the track played home to Slamfest where it saw Australia’s first eighth mile three second Top Doorslammer pass. The track is no stranger to performance barriers, having also hosted Darren Morgan when he ran Australia’s quickest time on an eighth mile track of 3.39 seconds at 224mph in 2010. Next year the venue will host a round of the Rocket Allstars Racing Series for the first time, with opportune timing in October 2013 right before the Australian Nationals, so people can get some last minute point scoring in. For racers coming from Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia in particular, a stop in to Mildura to do some racing might be just the ticket to boost your championship chances ahead of the season ending Australian Nationals in Sydney.
