ANDRA sends its congratulations to all the finalists on being recognised in these prestigious awards, and in particular to Dan Hodgins, who not only was announced as the winner of the Driver Of The Year Award, but also as the Overall Champion Of The Year.
Throughout my professional motorsport administration career, I always have questions on insurance and who has it, who doesn’t, and why it is needed and what is covered.
Through my conversations with individuals, it is clear what the majority do not understand is what cover is in place and what motor racing insurance is.
So, I thought I would give a quick summary of what ANDRA has in place for the general public and our members.
There are two types of relevant insurance – Personal Accident Insurance and Public Liability Insurance – which often get confused, but they are both vitally important in motor racing.
Personal Accident Insurance is the ‘cheap’ insurance (relatively speaking). Personal Accident insurance is a no-fault insurance which covers participants (drivers, rider, officials, crew) if they are injured.
Simply, it is in place to cover personal injury at the race track and will have a range of benefits, from ambulance rides, home modifications and wage benefits while injured and recovering. However, it is legislated that this can only engage once Medicare and personal cover is exhausted. There are also waiting periods (seven to 14 days) before wages can be claimed, but essentially it is good cover to make sure we can cover the out of pocket expenses which you may incur when injured.
The cover costs ANDRA under $100,000 per year and anyone who is licenced or signed into an ANDRA sanctioned event is eligible. There are numerous providers (insurers) in this market and the ANDRA policy is capped at $75,000 per claim.
The most expensive and difficult to place insurance is not in the Public Liability Insurance. There are only a handful of insurers worldwide who are interested in placing this risk and ANDRA’s policy costs us around $700,000 per year. That gives us $100 million of cover.
Many people think that this is only for the public. For example, if a car goes over the fence into the public area. However, that is only part of the cover. Public Liability insurance also covers participants and the biggest claims in our claims history are from participants, not the general public. The more claims we have, the higher the premium goes! That also ties in very importantly with the risk management program which we have in place.
In simple terms, the public liability insurance is in place for when lawyers get involved due to alleged negligence –for example, where if someone is hurt, be that a member of the general public on the hill, or a driver or an official or team member, and they may feel we didn’t do enough to prevent their injury.
A civil case may follow and the civil action could include many other participants within the race meeting. As an example, say the driver of the (fictitious) Drag Pro Sedan class is seriously injured in qualifying. His lawyer serves papers to the effect that his injuries are a result of poor risk management and the drag racing regulations followed were inadequate. The civil lawsuit names ANDRA, the track promoter, the Drag Pro Sedan Association, individuals such as key officials, those behind the technical/ logbook process, the owner of the land, and anyone else who may remotely be involved. He claims $3 million for lost income, damages, and so on.
This example shows why participant exclusions within the public liability wording are not a good thing. It also explains why cheaper policies are out there – because they may only cover the general public, or participants to a sub limit of $200,000 only.
Some policies also have a high excess, similar to your own road car. The higher the excess, the cheaper the policy.
The terms and conditions tell the story about what is covered and what is excluded, and while ANDRA could use

this as a tool to reduce the premium, we choose to lead the industry with the best level of protection for our members and the general public.
That is why we need to always be improving our processes and procedures, track standards, safety standards and assessments. This all costs money, and is often where shortcuts are taken.
Unfortunately, the laws in Australia are very different to America and other western countries and require review. That is another thing we need to continue to drive with other Australian peak motorsport bodies through our membership with the Australian Motorsport Council.

At the 2024 Mildura Airshow, ANDRA Member and South Australian dare devil Nigel Benson broke a world record by completing a 1331 metre wheel stand in his Aussie Bandit Ute.
In January, Nigel’s record was officially approved by the Records Management Team at Guinness World Records, bettering the previous marker of just over 760 metres.
The wheel stand was completed at a speed of 183km/h in less than a minute, with Nigel dropping his wheels to the tarmac with only three metres of runway left ahead of him.
“I had been trying to find a venue for around six years that was both long enough and would actually allow us to do the attempt,” Benson explains.
“We were pretty thrilled when Mildura Airport allowed us to do the challenge and it all went to plan, which was even better.
“I want to say a special thank you to many people, including my wife Rita, ground crew James and Heather, Paul Bennett Air Shows and staff, Paul Joosten, Sarah and the management and ground crew of the airstrip, and Ryan from Racing Industries.
“We certainly had our challenges over the two days and had to get very creative, but it was all worth it!”

The ANDRA Sportsman Series will be completed in April with seven (7) rounds, following the withdrawal of Whyalla in March.
“We looked at all options to replace the Whyalla round,’ said ANDRA CEO Tim McAvaney.
“However, with an already packed calendar, the difficult timeline, and other logistical issues, we decided it was in the best interests of the series and its racers to not replace it.”
The Grand Final is therefore our next event at Dragway at the Bend to be held on April 25 and 26.
With Friday April 25th being ANZAC Day, qualifying will begin in the early afternoon and extend into the evening. Eliminations will take place on Saturday 26th April, with the finals scheduled in the day light hours. The event presentations and series
presentations will then take place an hour after the event, in the pits for everyone to enjoy. Gold ANDRA Christmas Trees will be available for the Grand Final winners AND the Championship winners!
“We want to work with the Bend management to make this THE annual biggest Sportsman event on the calendar,” said McAvaney.
“There is no reason why the ANDRA Grand Finals cannot attract 200 or more of the best sportsman competitors in the country. It is designed to be a sportsman only event, with the focus on the great sportsman categories, showcasing the best we have to offer.”

In late 2024, ANDRA was very pleased to announce that quarter-mile drag racing is set to return to the menu at Swan Hill, with not-for-profit Skid City Inc. officially signing on to revitalise the Swan Hill Dragway facility.
After much work behind the scenes over the past two years, the Skid City Inc consortium of Alec Berias and Mark Humphrey was officially granted a threeyear lease agreement in December with Swan Hill Rural City Council to rehabilitate and operate the site, which will run under exclusive ANDRA sanctioning.

The 2025/2026 ANDRA Sportsman Series will kick off in the NT with an epic one-week northern swing which will feature the first two rounds of the title chase, plus the chance to be a part of the non-championship Red CentreNATS action.
Nitro Up North at the Hidden Valley Drag Strip will open the 2025/2026 ANDRA Sportsman Series across August 29 and 30, with ANDRA’s sportsman racers to be joined on-track by 4000hp Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Cars and the NDRC Top Doorlsammer Grand Final in a festival-like atmosphere with food vendors, merchandise and family-friendly entertainment.
Racers will then head to Alice Springs Inland Dragway for a mid-week round two of the championship chase – the Desert Nationals – on Wednesday September 3 (preceded by a Tuesday evening test and tune) allowing them to truly make the most of their trip to the NT when it comes to pursuing valuable ANDRA Sportsman Series points.
Those that want to up the ante even further then have the
opportunity to race again at Alice Springs Inland Dragway on Saturday September 5, this time as part of the (nonchampionship) Heavy Hitters racing of Red CentreNATS.

The Gallagher Volunteer of the Year Award is back to recognise the tireless efforts of ANDRA’s dedicated volunteer force
ANDRA wouldn’t be what it is without the tireless efforts of our volunteer force.
At race tracks all around the country, dedicated volunteers work to ensure that competitors have a place to race.
ANDRA is pleased to announce the return of the Gallagher Volunteer of the Year Award, which is designed to recognise the outstanding contribution and passion of volunteers who selflessly donate their time to ANDRA drag racing.
First established in the 2013/2014 season, when it was taken out by Neville Stokes, the Award has provided an important opportunity for ANDRA Members and Clubs to nominate who they believe are the best volunteers for recognition on a national stage.
As the years progressed, Stokes was joined on the VOTY honour roll by a host
of impressive volunteers from all across the country, including Wayne Downes, the Steel City Drag Club, Aaron Brookes, Glenn Knight, Trevor Ballinger, Emma Bell, Brian ‘Scruffy’ Lake, Liz Johns, Sarah Bindle, Andrew Smith, Gavin ‘Bear’ Hynam, Lauren Kuchel, Geoff Chaisty, Rebecca McLaughlin, Phil Partridge, Gary McCann, John Mowry, Alan Hudson, Alicia Traywick, Kingsley Kuchel, and Tim Reidy.
Nominations for the 2024/2025 season Gallagher Volunteer of the Year Award will open soon, with ANDRA Members and Clubs encouraged to put forward a volunteer they admire for this Award.
Gallagher – which has been working with ANDRA to provide high quality insurance coverage since 2012 and has been recognising ANDRA’s volunteers and clubs with its VOTY award since 2014, is also the naming rights partner of the Modified Eliminator bracket in the
2024/2025 ANDRA Regional Sportsman Championship.
“We are proud to hold a long-standing partnership with ANDRA as its official insurance broker, and it has also been our honour for many years now to recognise some of the sport’s most valued contributors through the Gallagher Volunteer of the Year Awards,” Gallagher Senior Account Manager, Martyn Luck, said.

One of ANDRA’s longest standing volunteers is Paul Rogers Snr, who has dedicated more than 60 years of his life to serving the sport in various volunteer roles.
In an interview for the special edition of FASTLANE Magazine celebrating ANDRA’s 50th anniversary, Rogers Snr spoke about the importance of volunteers and also his first-hand experiences.
“Not only in ANDRA Drag Racing, but in all sports, volunteers are critical,” he said.
“We cannot underestimate the importance of volunteers because without them, we simply would not be able to run events because they would not be adequately
staffed. The sacrifices these people make to help us to do what we love is very much appreciated.”
Rogers said as critical as volunteering is to the success of drag racing, it can be equally as rewarding for the volunteer.
“I personally have been committed as a volunteer over the years for a number of reasons,” he said.
“Firstly, it allowed me to become involved in the sport I loved before I could afford to be a competitor. It allowed me to interact with racers and spectators and be a part of the action while knowing I was contributing to the sport.
“After I started racing my volunteer work tapered off a little for a time, however at any event I was not racing I always attended and volunteered to help where I could, because I understood how much help was required to run an event successfully.
“After I stopped racing, I continued with my volunteer roles, and this allowed me to stay involved in drag racing and gave me the opportunity to give back and contribute to the sport that has provided me with so much.
“I highly recommend that anybody who is considering volunteering follows that gut feeling and gets involved.
“You will meet many, many great people and make many, many lifelong friends, like I have. It provides you with a level of satisfaction of being a part of something that is enjoyed by so many people.
“Do not be afraid to be a volunteer, it will allow you to meet people you never thought you could meet, it will allow you to experience things you could never otherwise experience.
“It could be the best thing you ever did, and it will provide you with an opportunity you may not get anywhere else and help you fulfill your dreams.”
Rogers has a simple message to all of those he has volunteered alongside over the last six decades: thank you.
“I wish to express my gratitude for your contribution and for helping grow the sport that we love,” he said.
“Without people like you sacrificing time away from your family and your work, we would not have drag racing as we know it today.

A number of Perfect Light performances have been celebrated of late, with Dean Cleary, Stefan Lainas and Shane Wynd all achieving the prestigious marker at December’s 2024 South Coast Nationals at South Coast Raceway. We caught up with them to find out their thoughts on this achievement.
Dean Cleary and his Torana Hatchback went all the way to round three in Goodyear Racing Super Street at the event, setting his Perfect Light in the second round of eliminations.
“I had pretty good lights most of the weekend, just running off the trans brake with no delay box – for the last few seasons I have been competing in Top Sportsman using a delay box,” Cleary said.
“I was going pretty well, and most of my lights during qualifying were .02 to .07 and then the .000 in the second round. For the next round I thought I had better slow it down a little bit, but my reaction time was a little too slow and I lost by a few thousandths of a second on a double break out!
“The perfect light run felt pretty good, I had gone 000 on the practice tree but never during racing, so it felt pretty awesome to do it.
“I was up against Andrew Waight in that run and he is a tough racer and normally goes pretty well, so I thought I had better be pretty good,” he laughed.
“It was a good event overall; I am part of the club of course but it is always a great event to be a part of. It is a lot of work leading up to it and during the day to make it work properly and we love having people come down here and have fun racing.”
Stefan Lainas broke through for his first ANDRA Christmas Tree at the South Coast Nationals with his Super Street V6-powered VS Commodore. On his way to the win, he also locked down a perfect light in the final.
“For the Perfect Light run, you know when a light ‘feel’s good, but when I was handed the time card, I saw just how close I was to the edge,” Lainas laughed. “I am proud to have produced that package in the final to grab the South Coast Nationals ANDRA Christmas Tree.
“Winning at South Coast Nationals was incredible. That win was huge for me as it was my first National event win, so to get one under my belt was a massive moment. And having my family there for the fun made it even more special.
“I want to thank my wife Bianca and daughter Georgie for their support, as well as Northside Performance, and my brothers Sam and Manuel. It’s a team effort to get to the track, and I’m grateful for everything they do,” he said.
In his XW Ute, Shane Wynd raced all the way to the winners’ circle in Top Sportsman, claiming the ANDRA Christmas Tree and laying down a perfect light on the way.
“It was a good race and we went in there with the confidence to win having finally got the car sorted,” Wynd said.
“It is only 12 months old – I crashed it 14 years ago at Kwinana and we have been slowly rebuilding it over the last 14 years and finally got it out on the track.
“The perfect light run certainly felt like a good light.
“This is my first ANDRA Perfect Light Award, but I have run quite a few perfect lights over the years, both here and also racing in America.
“The Ute has only five or six meetings now, and we headed to South Coast Nationals hoping for a good result, and it was even better to get the win as it was my birthday on the Monday – everything just did what it was supposed to do,” he concluded, while thanking his wife Kerrie for her support as well as Get M Performance USA.
The 54th annual Westernationals will light up the Perth Motorplex across March 1-2, with 11,000hp Top Fuelers, Top Doorslammers and Top Fuel Motorcycles to delight a packed crowd as part of the National Drag Racing Championship (NDRC) alongside an impressive lineup of sportsman racers vying for valuable points in the Aeroflow National Sportsman Championship and WA Drag Racing Championship.
One of those racers is WA local and second-gen racer, Madison Brown, who will take to the track in her Boston Strangler II Funny Car in Top Comp. The original ‘Boston Strangler’ alcohol funny car was debuted by Ian Brown in the early 90s with a classic Oldsmobile Cutlass body. It was campaigned for many years before Ian sold the car to raise a family. Ian later purchased the car back for Madison, who was ready to take the wheel after graduating from the Junior Dragster ranks.
Madison had started out racing at 11 in a Junior Dragster, going on to receive the West Coast Junior Dragster Association Rookie of the Year Award. Upon moving to the senior ranks with her Funny Car for the 2021/2022 season, she was swiftly recognised as the WADRA Rookie of the Year, 39 years after her dad received the
same award, and also came very close to the 2022/2023 national title, placing second in the 2022/2023 Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Championship in Competition Eliminator.
“I got into racing because of my dad, and I always knew what dad used to do before I was born, and I wanted to be just like him,” Brown said.
“I love all aspects of this sport – the teamwork to turn the car around after each pass and between events, the competition between drivers, and the quality time I spend with my family and friends while we all do something we love.
“I climbed out of the car as quickly as I could and went home that night quite upset about the state of the car, but I was all fine – although 10 days later I was in quite a bit of pain and that is when I had to have more scans done on my back while under ‘full spinal’ precautions.
“Thankfully I was cleared, and we got to work preparing for the next event – which we won, so it was quite the comeback!”
“And of course, the speed gets you hooked! There is nothing else quite like the feeling of driving a race car and the desire to go faster is what keeps you there.”
Her racing journey hasn’t been without its bumps however, with a heavy crash in March of 2024.
“The chutes failed to blossom and I grabbed the brakes, knowing I was going into the sand, but when the car didn’t bog down so I went into the nets quite hard,” Brown reflects.
Now, Brown has a Westernationals win in her sights.
“Heading to the Westernationals, our goal is always to win the event and improve the consistency of the car,” Brown said.
“It is always the biggest event on the calendar, but as far as my approach to it, I treat it the same as any other event.
“It is always a lot of fun, but also a lot of work over the two days.
“To take out the victory at this event would mean a great deal – it would be my first NDRC Gold Christmas Tree win, so it would certainly be very special for me, my team, and my supporting partners,” Brown concluded, while thanking her sponsors: Couplers, Spinifex Sheds, Browns Sweeping, Burson Auto Parts Kelmscott, Autologic, Bills Small Engine Repairs, Dimoff Transmissions, Bravo Resources and Penrite.

You took your first victory at the South Coast Nationals in December, and your first ANDRA Christmas Tree – what did that mean to you?
It was very emotional. It was my first time at South Coast Raceway and my dad was a good friend of Chris Stewart, so it was a bit hard for us but it turned out pretty well. It certainly meant a lot to me to get my first win there.
Please tell us about how that event unfolded for you?
The event went very well, we ran consistently the whole day and it all went by extremely fast.
You debuted a new car at the next round of the ANDRA Regional Sportsman Championship at Dragway at The Bend – how did that go?
The debut of the new car went good, I made it to the semi-finals where I unfortunately went red, but I think I got very far for a first ever meeting in the new car.
How were you introduced to Junior Dragster racing?
My dad, Adam Hawke, used to race back in the early 2000s and he took me to the Grand Opening of Dragway at The Bend, where I say in a Junior Dragster for the first time. Ever since, I have just loved it.
What do you love about Junior Dragster racing?
I love the people that I get to race with – I have made a lot of friendships through my racing and we all get along really well.
What have been your favourite moments since you started?
Other than winning at the South Coast Nationals, I have been happy to get into some finals, and make heaps of friends.
Is there anyone you would like to thank for being part of your drag racing journey?

How did you get into drag racing?
I got my start in go-karting at a young age, thanks to Frank Palumbo, who introduced me to Joe Princi. Under Joe’s guidance, I began racing in the junior dragster series. Later, Joe purchased a Modified car, which I raced for a year before eventually buying my own.
What is it you love about racing in Modified?
What I love most about racing in Modified is the sense of family and camaraderie within the sport. It is not just about the competition; it is about the people you race with and the support system that builds around you. The competitive nature of the sport pushes me to constantly improve, and there’s nothing quite like the adrenaline rush you get when you’re on the track, fighting for that top spot. The thrill of racing, combined with the closeknit atmosphere, makes every race a rewarding experience.
You top qualified and were runner-up at the South Coast Nationals – how was that event for you and how did you feel about the result?
I am really pleased with the results from the South Coast Nationals. Being the Top Qualifier and finishing as the runner-up especially on my first time racing at that track, was a great accomplishment. I was happy with the car’s performance and how everything came together throughout the event. It was also awesome to meet new people and connect with fellow racers. While I did have a minor driver error towards the end, it’s all part of the learning process. Overall, it was an amazing experience, and I’m looking forward to what’s next.
What are your upcoming racing plans?
My upcoming racing plans are focused on getting the dragster dialled in to run a sixsecond pass. I’m currently working on making adjustments and improvements to get it quicker and more consistent. It’s a big challenge, but that’s what I love about drag racing – pushing the limits and seeing how far you can go. I’m excited for the upcoming season and the opportunity to see just how fast we can make it run.
Is there anyone who you would like to shine the spotlight on for their involvement in your racing?
I would like to shine the spotlight on my pit crew, which is my family. Their ongoing support and involvement means the world. They’ve been there through every step of the journey. Without them, none of this would be possible, and I’m incredibly grateful for everything they do. It’s a true family effort, and I couldn’t do it without them.

At the Goldenstates in November 2024, Connor McClure and the McClure Motorsport team were awarded this honour for their impressive ‘Slimer’ ’53 Corvette Pro Mod which in just 25 passes, has already achieved an impressive list of accolades including event wins and track and national records.
“The car was originally brought in as a kit from America from Vanishing Point Race Cars, and was started off by Frank Intini,” Connor explains.
“At around the half point of the chassis being built, Robby from RMF Race Cars in Adelaide bought the car with a few tools and finished off the roller, putting on all the struts, diff and so on – which is where it was up to when we bought it, with the body sat on top.
“From there we started a 22 week build which we documented in a weekly YouTube series, for which my brother Bailey did most of the camera and production work. We were really proud of that series; it got a lot of interest and I
further with this project.”
Slimer first hit the track on the 22nd of September 2024 and immediately turned heads.
“We had a couple of small issues on the first test day where it wasn’t going to full power after the half-track, but once we nutted out the issue in the computer, it has been perfect,” Connor said.
“We have done 25 passes on the car right now and from those 25 passes it has four event wins, has reset the track record three times, and claimed two national records.
“On its first full track pass it went under the national record, and it was also a PB for myself at 6.34 even though we were out of it at 1000ft.
“We were sort of shocked that it went that quick that fast, but that is exactly what we wanted and that is the reason we built this car because we weren’t getting that out of our Torana, no matter how hard we tried.
“It definitely showed its worth straight away,” added Connor, who remarked that
“We won Best Engineered with the Slime Time II Torana when we first brought that out, and this (being good enough to win this award) is basically the standard that we hold ourselves too, so I think we would have been pretty disappointed if we hadn’t won it,” Connor said.
“It is a credit to all the people that put their hands on the car – it is a pretty limited group as we did most of it inhouse including the fabricating, engine building and chassis tune-up. The proof is on our YouTube channel and I think it is great that it was pretty much only us that touched the car.
“For Slimer to be appearing well and also performing well is huge for us as a team and something we are very proud of,” Connor added, while recognising his family (Natalie, Al, Bailey, Kasey) his wife Jade, crew members Troy, Brad and Russell for their work and support while also bringing attention to the team’s sponsors for their support of the program, including Manic Street Wear, Garrett Turbo, AllFast Torque Converters, Tasman Safety and Training, Quality Batteries, B and B Smash, Perth Dive Academy, Haltech, Ignite Auto Electrics, Final Drive, and Hype Visual.
Portland’s South Coast Nationals provided the perfect conclusion to 2024 for the ANDRA Regional Sportsman Championship, with round four providing plenty of exciting action at the seaside track on Saturday and Sunday December 7-8.
It was celebrations all around at the end of Sunday’s running for the winners in their respective brackets: Rob Cassar (Lectron Australia Competition Bike), Bailey Hawke (Langtree’s Machinery Services Junior Dragster), Peter Bartlett (Ballistic Performance Parts Modified Bike), Kenny Stewart (Gallagher Modified Eliminator), Adrian McGrotty (The South Australian Drag Racers Association Super Gas), Tony Miskelly (Super Sedan Competitors Super Sedan), Stefan Lainas (Goodyear Racing Super Street), Shane Baxter (Huntsman
Racing Supercharged Outlaws), and Shane Wynd (Top Sportsman Competitors Top Sportsman).
Celebrations were also had for the event runners-up in each bracket: Edge Mallis (Lectron Australia Competition Bike), Bryan Finn (Ballistic Performance Parts Modified Bike), Rocco Romano (Gallagher Modified Eliminator), Colin Griffin (The South Australian Drag Racers Association Super Gas), Robert Kardum (Super Sedan Competitors Super Sedan),

In Lectron Australia Competition Bike, four new national eighth mile records were set by three competitors, one by winner Rob Cassar, one by runner-up Edge Mallis and two by Top Qualifier Medallion, presented by New Gen Business Park winner, Joe Khoury.
To get to the final, both Cassar and Mallis enjoyed wins in rounds one, two and three of the round-robin style racing. In round one, it was Cassar over Rob Church and Mallis over Nathan Stone. In round two, Cassar took the win over Stone while Mallis enjoyed a bye. In round three Mallis took the win over Walter Hosta, while Cassar enjoyed the bye. Top Qualifier Joe Khoury also took a win over Church in round three, after enjoying a bye in round one and being bested by Hosta in round two.
In Huntsman Racing Supercharged Outlaws winner Shane Baxter lined up against runner-up Tim Stewart in the final elimination round. To get to the final, Baxter took wins over Warren Leonard in round one and Jason Keily in round two. Stewart, meanwhile, got the better of Mark Hunt in round one and Wayne Talbot in round two, who got the better of Top Qualifier Doina Day in round one.
In Langtree’s Machinery Services Junior Dragster Bailey Hawke took the win with a solo run in the final. The South Australian racer was slated to race fellow South Aussie Brock Furlanetto, who was unfortunately unable to line up for the final run after making it all the way through to the semi finals. To get to the final, Hawke bested Savanna Condello in round one, Deklan McGregor in round two and Top Qualifier Luca Lamattina in round three before a solo run in round four.
In Ballistic Performance Parts Modified Bike Peter Bartlett took the win over runner-up Bryan Finn. To get to the final pairing, Bartlett first got the better of Derryn McGregor in round one, before successfully lining up against Mathew Jones in round two. Meanwhile, Finn took wins over Lucas Neagoe in round one and Corey Gathercole in round two. Gathercole got the best of Saturday’s Top Qualifier, Dean Jamieson, in round one.
In Gallagher Modified Eliminator Kenny
Stewart successfully dispatched Top Qualifier Rocco Romano in the final elimination round at South Coast Raceway. To make it into the finals, Stewart first took wins over Ashley Johnson in round one and Craig Geddes in round two before enjoying a bye in round three. Romano, meanwhile, also enjoyed two wins and a bye before lining up in the final against Stewart, getting the better of Bradley Hicks in round one and Paul Fletcher in round three with a solo run in round two.
In The South Australian Drag Racers Association Super Gas Adrian McGrotty took it all the way to the end with a win in the final match up on Sunday against runner-up Colin Griffin. To get to the final, McGrotty set to work in the first round, taking the win over Darryl Stephen in round one and Jason Wilson in round two before enjoying a bye in round three ahead of the semi final. Griffin meanwhile raced through all three elimination rounds, with wins over Vasilios Hondros (round one), Renee Cockerill (round two) and Warren Bull (round three) before lining up against McGrotty. Bull had previously won over Top Qualifier Malcolm Todd in round one.
In Super Sedan Competitors Super Sedan the points leader coming into this weekend, Tony Miskelly, added more valuable points to his total with a win over runner-up Robert Kardum. To get to the final, Miskelly first took the win over Brodie Tedesco in round one before wins over Chevy Taylor and Alex Gkroidis in rounds two and three, respectively, before a bye in round four. For Kardum, the Victorian racer first dispatched Top Qualifier Zack Knezevic in round one before taking the win over Nikolas Karanovic in round two
and Benny Phillips in round four after a bye in round three.
In Goodyear Racing Super Street, winner Stefan Lainas successfully navigated through five rounds of elimination runs to claim the ANDRA Christmas Tree over runner-up Luke Griffiths. Lainas’ successful runs began with a win over Michael Bridges in round one and Allan Brooks in round two before a bye in round three and another win over Andrew Francis in round four, with Francis having previously bested Top Qualifier Malcolm Todd in round three. Likewise, Griffiths also enjoyed a bye during Sunday’s runs, but not before dispatching Michael Jennings in round one, Henry Spicak in round two and Dean Cleary in round three.
In Top Sportsman Competitors Top Sportsman the win belonged to Shane Wynd, who got the best of runner-up Jason Young in the final run. To get to the final, Wynd got the better of Graham Hargrave (round one), Glenn Henley (round two) and Michael Rouhan (round three). Likewise, Young took his Firebird to the final with wins over Greg Damiani (round one), Andrew White (round two) and Top Qualifier Daniel Jones (round three).

No fewer than 140 ANDRA Regional Sportsman Championship racers took to the track at Dragway at The Bend across February 8 and 9 for round five of the 2024/2025 series for two full days of racing action.
Claiming the ANDRA Christmas Trees at the end of the event were Edge Mallis (Lectron Australia Competition Bike), Charli Nurzenski (Langtree’s Machinery Services Junior Dragster), Peter Bartlett (Ballistic Performance Parts Modified Bike), Cory Dyson (Gallagher Modified Eliminator), Adrian McGrotty (The South Australian Drag Racers Association Super Gas), Chris Lioulios (Super Sedan Competitors Super Sedan), Michael Jennings (Goodyear Racing Super Street), Shane Kramer (Huntsman Racing Supercharged Outlaws), Sam Cardinale (Top Sportsman Competitors Top Sportsman), and Craig Geddes (Jackie Watt Consultancy & Fardella Racing SuperComp).

In The South Australian Drag Racers Association Super Gas, winner Adrian McGrotty lined up against runner-up
Darryl Stephen in the final after having earlier taken wins over Joe Carbone (round one), Anton Krajina (round two), and Graeme Spencer (round three). Stephen, meanwhile, got the better of New Gen Business Park Top Qualifier Tony Romeo in round one and Rob Bergamin in round two before a round three bye. It was the second consecutive ANDRA series win for McGrotty after also taking the win at the South Coast Nationals and came in his first visit to Dragway at The Bend.
In Ballistic Performance Parts Modified Bike, Peter Bartlett took the win over Top Qualifier Dean Jamieson. Bartlett took home the ANDRA Christmas Tree by first taking wins over Bryan Finn (round one), Shaun White (round two), and Tyson BirdBalek (round three). Runner-up Jamieson meanwhile found his way to the final with wins in rounds one and two over Micheal Cristoforo and Luis Izattbefore lining up in the final.
In Jackie Watt Consultancy & Fardella Racing SuperComp, Craig Geddes converted his Top Qualifier honours into the win over runner-up Steve Norman. Across an all-run format, Geddes and Norman first faced each other in round one where Norman took the win. In round two, Geddes got the better of Mitchell Oxley, while Norman enjoyed a bye. Round three saw Norman lose to Oxley, while Geddes had a bye.
In Lectron Australia Competition Bike, Edge Mallis and Rob Cassar enjoyed a South Coast Nationals rematch with the win this time going to Mallis, who also Top Qualified. Mallis went to the final after wins over Rob Church (round one), Cheryl Beddoes (round two), and Jake HamiltonModerate (round three) while Cassar had also enjoyed three undefeated passes against Cheryl Beddoes (round one), Jake Hamilton-Moderate (round two), and Nathan Stone (round three). During Sunday’s racing, winner Mallis also reset two competition bike DD/CB records, resetting the ET marker from 7.793secs to 7.627secs and the Top Speed record from 178.52mph to 178.64mph.
In Langtree’s Machinery Services Junior Dragster, Charli Nurzenski took the win over Taylor Horton after wins over Deklan McGregor (round one), Paige Harvey (round two) and Todd Wagner (round three) before a bye in the semi-final. Horton meanwhile dispatched Angelina
Kondilis and James Barlow in rounds one and two respectively before a bye in round three and victory over South Coast Nationals winner Bailey Hawke in round four. Top Qualifier Madalen Datson had a bye in round one before being knocked out in round two by Cooper Vickery.
In Gallagher Modified Eliminator, Cory Dyson secured the win over runner-up Derek Wills. Dyson started the day with a win over Ashley Johnson in round one before getting the better of Top Qualifier Daniel ‘Batdan’ Carranza in round two. Wills meanwhile had ensured his place in the final with wins over Dan Bader and Peter Cook in rounds one and two.
In Super Sedan Competitors Super Sedan, Chris Lioulios lifted the ANDRA Christmas tree after defeating runnerup Robert Kardum in the final. Lioulios had earlier defeated Joe Martino (round one), Tony Miskelly (round two) and Brian Keane (round three). Runner-up Kardum meanwhile dispatched Ned Karanovic (round one) before sending Top Qualifier Adam Ince packing in round two, as well as Deb O’Connell in round three.
In Goodyear Racing Super Street, Michael Jennings took the win over runner-up Victor Romeo. Jennings raced through to the final with wins over Andrew Francis (round one), Tony Antonino (round two), Mark Jachmann (round three), and Katrina Read (round four) while Romeo emerged victorious from face offs with Andrea Stefanopoulos (round one), Stefan Lainas (round two), and Michael Bridges (round three) before a bye in round four. Top Qualifier Allan Brooks made it through the first round of racing with a win over Rick Pfitzner before being knocked out by Read in round two.
In Huntsman Racing Supercharged Outlaws, Shane Kramer prevailed over runner-up Bob Sherry to lift the ANDRA Christmas Tree. To get to the final, Kramer won over Drago Nikodijevic, Paul Stephen, and Kane Finn in rounds one, two and three while Sherry took wins over Jason Keily in round one and Top Qualifier Doina Day in round two, before a bye in round three.
In Top Sportsman Competitors Top Sportsman, Sam Cardinale triumphed over runner-up Glenn Henley to claim the ANDRA Christmas Tree. Cardinale earlier took wins over Jason Young (round one), Top Qualifier Daniel Jones (round two),
Graham Hargrave (round three) and Andrew Halstead (round four). Henley, meanwhile, found success in rounds one, two and three over Dean Tassone, Stuart McBain, and Leon Davies, before a bye in round four.

The sportsman racing at this event also doubled as a Summit Racing Equipment Track Championship round and took to the track alongside round two of the Pro Drag Racing Championship, with the PDRC victories going to Luke Crowley over runner-up Scott White (Pro Stock Motorcycle), Rob Dekert over runner-up Mario Polito (Pro Stock), Andrew Sutton over runner-up Carl Cox (Pro Mod), and Daniel Reed over runner-up Wayne Price (Pro Alcohol).

As the sun set over Mildura’s Atlantic Oils Sunset Strip on Friday February 14 and Saturday February 15, ANDRA Regional Sportsman Championship competitors delivered plenty of thrills as they chased valuable points and coveted ANDRA Christmas Tree trophies in the penultimate round of the 2024/2025 championship chase.

In Huntsman Racing Supercharged Outlaws, Davydd Estcourt converted his New Gen Business Park Top Qualifier Medallion into the win and his first ever ANDRA Christmas Tree trophy, over runner-up Brendan Carr. To get to the
final Estcourt first took the win over Mark Hunt in round one, before a successful pairing against Shane Baxter in round two, while Carr also took wins over Jason Keily in round one and Tim Stewart in round two.
In Top Sportsman Competitors Top Sportsman, Leon Davies claimed victory over runner-up Jason Young to lift the ANDRA Christmas Tree, first with wins over Shane Wynd and Top Qualifier Vlado Turic in rounds one and two respectively. Runner-up Young meanwhile took wins over Sam Cardinale (round one) and Michael Rouhan (round two) to get to the final.
Making her return to racing after having a baby just 11 weeks ago, Gallagher Modified Top Qualifier Adriana Cartledge took the win over runner-up and last round winner, Cory Dyson. Across the four rounds of all-run racing, Cartledge took wins over Dyson both times they faced off, first in round two before the final run. Cartledge also enjoyed a win over Ashley Johnson in round three. Dyson meanwhile was successful in match-ups against Ashley Johnson in round one and Kenny Stewart in round three.
In Lectron Australia Competition Bike, Top Qualifier and round five winner Edge Mallis went back-to-back with a win over runner-up Cheryl Beddoes. Running the all-run format, the pair lined up twice over the four rounds of racing, with Mallis getting the better of Beddoes in round two as well as the final. Mallis also took wins over Rob Church in round one and Nick
Stewart in round three. To get to the final, Beddoes also enjoyed wins over Stewart (round one) and Church (round two).
In Super Sedan Competitors Super Sedan, Top Qualifier Tony Miskelly took home the ANDRA Christmas Tree over runner-up Kevin Bowker. Miskelly got to the final thanks to wins in rounds one and two over Brian Keane and Deb O’Connell respectively before a bye in round three. Bowker, meanwhile, took wins over Alex Gkroidis in round one, Mick Piscioneri in round two, and Tony Tedesco in round three on his way to the final stand.
In Ballistic Performance Parts Modified Bike, Derryn McGregor claimed victory over runner-up Dean Jamieson. In an all-run racing format, McGregor got to the final after taking wins over Jason Rattray in round one and Matthew Jones in round three before a second match-up against Jamieson in the final. Jamieson meanwhile took wins over Jones in round one, McGregor in round two, and Rattray in round three.
In Goodyear Racing Super Street, Andrew ‘Chicka’ Waight took the win over runner-up and South Coast Nationals winner Stefan Lainas in the final. Waight made it through to the final with wins over Neil Mellett (round one), Dutchy Holland (round two), and Malcolm Todd (round three). Lainas meanwhile had successfully faced off against John Kalantzis in round one before dispatching Top Qualifier Dean Doolan in round two and then Dean Cleary in round three.
In The South Australian Drag Racers Association Super Gas, Adrian McGrotty made it three ANDRA Regional Sportsman
Championship wins in a row, adding to his South Coast Nationals and Round Five wins with victory at the Twilight Nationals over runner-up, Warren Smith. Before heading to the final, McGrotty first successfully lined up against Mark Calus in round one before sending Darryl Stephen and Colin Griffin packing in rounds two and three. Smith meanwhile got the better of Brodie Tedesco in round one before knocking out Top Qualifier Graeme Spencer in round two before enjoying a bye in round three.
In Langtree’s Machinery Services Junior Dragster, round five runner-up Taylor Horton went one better to claim the win over runner-up Lucas Sparrow. The day started for Horton with wins over Sophia Kuchel in round one and Luca Lamattina in round two, before a bye in round three and another win in round four, this time over Archie Florrimell in the semi-final. Sparrow meanwhile successfully raced through over Bailey Hawke (round one), Zayne Condello (round two), and Andriana Florrimell (round three) before a bye in round four. Top Qualifier Brock Furlanetto made it through to round three only to be dispatched by Archie Florrimell in that round.
