staginglan ANDRA CHAIRMAN RETIRES FROM THE BOARD Back in July, ANDRA Chairman Michael Fotheringham advised the Board that he would stand down from the Board due to work commitments. His term as Chairman expired at the end of July 2016.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Chairman and in particular I have loved meeting so many new people who I would now call friends.
Michael has been both on the Board and as Chairman for almost 3 years.
“I thank the Board, members and the hard working staff at ANDRA for their support and look forward to staying in touch with many of you while being a spectator of this great sport.”
“My business is merging with another legal practice and this needs my undivided attention which does not allow me to continue as a volunteer Chairman with the hours required,” he said. “I will continue to provide any and all assistance to the ANDRA Board and the ANDRA staff but in the short term I need to focus on my own business priorities at this time.
The Board is currently considering a replacement Chairman and will pursue the filling of existing vacancies. An announcement on these matters will be made soon. The Board and management sincerely thank Michael for his leadership and enormous number of voluntary hours put in during his time on the Board and as Chairman.
ANDRA DRAG RACING RETURNS TO PERTH MOTORPLEX In August VenuesWest selected ANDRA as the preferred respondent in the bid for sanctioning at Perth Motorplex. On September 8 it was made official as VenuesWest advised the VenuesWest and Perth Motorplex mailing lists that ANDRA had been officially confirmed as the drag racing sanctioning body at Perth Motorplex.
In addition, ANDRA will recognise a competitor’s valid IHRA medical certificate for a period of up to two years from their commencement date. ANDRA has also confirmed they will hold a free technical inspection day at Perth Motorplex at a date to be set shortly.
The full VenuesWest statement can be read below:
Two ANDRA Championship events will be held at Perth Motorplex this season.
The Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA) has now been confirmed as the drag racing sanctioning body for Perth Motorplex.
The Goldenstates Drag Racing Championships will run on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 February 2017, and Westernational Drag Racing Championships on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 March 2017.
VenuesWest is working with ANDRA to plan a smooth transition for the venue and for alternatively licensed drivers.
Our new Perth Motorplex General Manager Shane Walsh is working hard with the team to get ready for an exciting season of speedway racing, drag racing and burnouts.
ANDRA has confirmed they will offer credit for current International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) licence holders when purchasing an ANDRA unlimited Group Two or Three licence or a Group One licence. A credit of $50 will be applied where the licence expires in six months or less, and $100 if the licence is valid for more than six months.
We look forward to welcoming you at our first sanctioned drag racing event on 2 October 2016. For any queries regarding ANDRA licencing or medical change over please contact ANDRA on 08 8271 5355 or info@andra.com.au. For any technical queries please contact 08 8271 5355 or technical@ andra.com.au For further clarification on VenuesWest decision please refer to the FAQ sheet HERE.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE CORRECT
HANS DEVICE The HANS Device has been around since the early 1980s but gained notoriety following the death of Dale Earnhardt in 2001. The U-shaped head and neck restraint was developed to keep the head from whipping forward and backward during a crash. The idea was to prevent fractures (basal fractures) at the base of the skull as the head is launched forward during accidents.
Before Earnhardt’s death, many motorsports drivers weren’t willing to wear the head and neck restraint, claiming it was uncomfortable and restrictive. NASCAR made the HANS Device mandatory in 2001, followed by the NHRA and Formula 1 in 2003. ANDRA made the frontal head
restraints mandatory in 2015 for all cars quicker than 7.99 seconds. ANDRA accepts any head and neck restraint that meets the SFI 38.1, FIA 8858-2002 or FIA 8858-2010 standards (see page 244 of the 2016/2017 ANDRA Rulebook). Still, the HANS Device is the most recognised and trusted
head and neck restraint and has even earned praise from racers who once refused to wear it. Whether you’re a pro or sportsman class racer, a HANS Device could save you from serious or possibly fatal head and neck injuries. We’ve put together this guide for choosing a HANS Device.
STEP 1 CHOOSE YOUR HANS DEVICE
Summit Racing offers several styles of HANS Devices. The differences are in the materials used and weight of the device itself. Here’s a quick overview of some of your HANS Device options: SPORT SERIES • Budget design • Injection molded super-structural carbon composite • Weighs just 2 1/4 pounds • SFI and FIA-approved
SPORT II SERIES • New injection molding reduces weight • Smaller collar made from DuPont polymer reduces weight • Weighs less than Sport Series but more than Pro Series • SFI and FIA-approved
PRO SERIES • High modulus carbon fiber construction • Weighs only one pound • SFI and FIA-approved • Trusted by ANDRA, NASCAR, World Rally, Formula 1, and more
ADJUSTABLE SERIES • Adjustable angle from 10 to 40 degrees in 5-degree increments for a custom feel • Fits all types of race cars • SFI-approved
STEP 2 FIND YOUR SIZE
Once you’ve settled on the device you want, you’ll need to choose the right size for your neck. HANS Performance and Simpson Racing provide this sizing chart as a starting point. Although you may fit a few different sizes, your comfort is ultimately the deciding factor.
STEP 3 STEP 4 CHOOSE THE RIGHT ANGLE PICK YOUR ANCHOR AND TETHER Next, you’ll need to narrow down your choice by matching your specific HANS Device to your seat angle. Some are available with two options; others come with three options. Depending on which model of HANS Device you select, here are your options: • 0-10 degree angle: commonly used in Sprint Cars • 20-degree angle: commonly used Modified, FIA, Stock Cars, or Sprints • 30-degree angle: intended for racers weighing 200 pounds or more
Finally, you’ll have to choose an anchoring system to attach the device to your helmet. Most competition-approved helmets now come pre-drilled for HANS Devices. If yours does not, you’ll need to drill holes in the proper locations using the instructions available with your helmet. Depending on the model you’ve chosen, you can typically get your HANS Device with post anchors or quick-click anchors to secure the tether to your helmet. HANS now offers sliding tethers for each model, giving you greater side-to-side vision and freedom when driving. You can find more detailed information on anchor and tether installation at WWW.HANDSDEVICE.COM

HANS DEVICE WHAT TYPE OF SHOULDER BELTS WORK BEST WITH A HANS DEVICE?
Any SFI- or FIA-approved shoulder harness system works fine with the HANS Device. Two- or three-inch shoulder belts in nylon or polyester work fine with the HANS Device. Be sure to mount and replace your belts in accordance with manufacturer guidelines. Only the HANS Device spreads the belts around your neck, preventing chafing and maximizing belt performance.
DO SOME SHOULDER BELTS SLIP OFF THE HANS DEVICE?
No. Properly mounted belts do not slip off the device. If your shoulder belts will not stay securely on the device chances are that you do not have the belt mounts properly located in your chassis. When properly mounted, the HANS Device actually maximizes belt performance by spreading the belts around your neck, allowing the belts to be mounted as close together as possible for best performance. In more than 3,600 crashes involving HANS Device use as inspected by NASCAR, there was not one concern about belt retention or slippage.
DO I NEED A DIFFERENT HANS DEVICE FOR EACH HELMET?
No. As long as each helmet is fitted with the proper anchors, you can use one HANS Device with multiple helmets. Because the HANS Device is the only head and neck restraint that directs the loads through the forehead area, you can use an open face helmet with the HANS Device, too.
WHEN SHOULD I REPLACE MY HANS DEVICE?
Unless it saves your life in a major wreck, you may never have to replace your HANS Device. However, you will need to have your HANS Device recertified every five years to maintain SFI 38.1 approval.
CAN I SHARE A HANS DEVICE?
Yes, provided that you are of similar physical size and shape to your partner, chances are good that you can share a HANS Device. Both of you will need to have HANS anchors installed on your helmets.
AVAILABLE @
DO I NEED A SPECIAL HELMET?
No. HANS helmet anchors fit any competition-approved racing helmet. Because the HANS Device is the only head and neck restraint that directs the loads through the forehead area, you can use an open face helmet with the HANS Device, too.
HOW DO I CARE FOR MY HANS DEVICE?
HANS Devices need almost no maintenance but should be kept clean and dry. Tethers are dated. Replace every 5 years, after major impacts or sooner if wear is observed. Extreme hot or cold environments should be avoided and they should be kept away from petroleum products and other corrosives as these can affect even the strongest composite materials and resins. To protect them, HANS Devices should be stored out of direct sunlight. They may be cleaned with soapy warm water.
WHEN I PUT THE DEVICE ON, IT RUBS AGAINST MY NECK. IS THAT NORMAL?
Yes. The padding is adjustable and moving it away from the neck often remedies this concern. This is a compromise to allow the driver to have greater clearance for steering and other arm movements.

who is your DIVISIONAL DIRECTOR? Division Director Alternative Division Director South Australian Divisional Council
Tim attended his first race meeting back in 1995 at Adelaide International Raceway – a Wild Bunch showcase thrilling the crowd. It was that meeting where Tim saw his hero Victor Bray racing in person for the very first time and from that moment he was hooked. “I spectated for a couple of years before joining my dad as an official,” he says. “I started as the 660ft spotter and helping in scrutineering at AIR before Mitch Johnson needed a Super Street bracket marshall. “I did that job at various tracks in the SA Division, usually travelling with Mitch. Little did I know he was setting me up to take over as Meeting Director.”

Tim has thrived in his role as a Meeting Director travelling throughout the South Australian Division earning the respect from racers and officials alike. “It is stressful but the feeling of running a successful meeting is great. I love meeting new racers from all over the country and have made many, many friends. “I’ve been a member of the SA DC for 10 years now and this year was elevated to Division Director and I look forward to the challenges and rewards of the role. “I hope to continue in the role for as long as possible to give SA some stability, just like Harry White did.”

Fast forward several months and we’re all about to find out… Rachelle Splatt is back!
A walk down memory lane, the page is a mix of photos, inside information and insight into her career shared with her loyal fans; the memories have come flooding back.
In a whirlwind couple of months, Splatt went from wondering to purchasing a dragster from Lamattina Top Fuel Racing to announcing her return at MotorEx in Melbourne.
Could it really be a full decade since “The Queen of Speed” hit the throttle?
In keeping with her nickname, it has seemingly all come together with the equivalent speed of her historic 300 mph pass at Houston Raceway Park back in 1994.
Curiosity has peaked Rachelle’s interest. The speeds and the power have increased but you don’t forget how to drive a Top Fuel dragster. She allows herself to wonder; “Could I do this again?”
“Prior to this I had a lot of people asking me if I would consider going back and it made me think about it but I didn’t think I would,” she says.
“The day of the reveal I had people messaging me all weekend expressing their excitement about my return, it really felt great to read all the messages and realise that I wasn’t forgotten after 10 years out of the sport.”

“I started my Facebook page in March and I was going through all my photos and memorabilia and started to think about how awesome it was when I was racing and wondered if I could do it again.
“I made contact with Phil after that to talk in more detail which resulted in purchasing a car and trailer from him.”
“The more I thought about it and talked to my family, I quickly knew it was something that I wanted to do again.”
The car, complete with a unique design and makeover provided by Top Alcohol racer Jason Maggs and MPrint Industries, was officially unveiled at MotorEX in Melbourne to the delight of the motorsport industry and long-time fans.
To get the wheels turning Rachelle put in a phone call to good friend Bruce Read to discuss the logistics of a return and the possibility of buying a car.
“Lance Larsen, my crew chief from the Luxor car (in the US) has wished me luck and offered support and some close friends that I made in the USA are also showing their support.
Surprised, Read welcomed the news and set about helping Splatt to make the first step.
“The day of the reveal I had people messaging me all weekend expressing their excitement about my return, it really felt great to read all the messages and realise that I wasn’t forgotten after 10 years out of the sport.”
“We talked about different scenarios and he contacted Phil Lamattina for me to discuss buying a car.
Rachelle on her hiatus from Drag Racing
While contemplating that first pass back after 10 years, Rachelle allows herself to admit she is feeling nervous. But that feeling gives way to confidence knowing that once she is in the drivers seat, it will feel like home.
Finishing in 2006 was based on family, just having a break from all the work of owning a Top Fuel team and putting that time into our children and our business Dragway Custom Car & Bike. I just needed time to not think about it and at the time I didn’t
“I sure don’t forget what it’s like to drive a Top Fuel dragster,” she says adamantly.
have any plans on when or if I would go back.
“The thing that stands out the most is the huge acceleration these cars have, it’s like you’re about to take off. “I don’t expect it to be too different but they are going faster and quicker now so I will just need to get my brain accustomed to the whole experience again and be really quick releasing the parachutes. “I haven’t kept up with racing over the last 10 years so I have had to catch up on everything very quick. “Things have changed a lot since 2006 and my team and I have a lot to catch up on but we will put in the hard work required and we will do our best. “I’m going to ease into it with some launches and half track passes and will only complete a full track pass when I feel comfortable. We are hoping to do some testing before our first race.” That first appearance is yet to be determined as the team seeks sponsorship. Valvoline is back on board in a minor role while the naming rights are up for grabs with races pencilled in all over Australia. But even though a TBC marks the calendar, Rachelle can’t help but let the anticipation and excitement of her official return take hold.

“I’m excited about a lot of things; jumping back into one of these powerful race cars, being back out in the excitement of drag racing, connecting with all the fans again, watching my kids learn about racing and all the possibilities that come along with this sport.”

northernligh Rarely do sequels live up to the hype but the 2016 edition of Nitro Up North surpassed its predecessor with even more nitro and even more record performances. Four Top Fuel dragsters were on display as Rapisarda Autosport’s Damien Harris and Wayne Newby were joined by Aaron Hambridge in the return of Lamattina Top Fuel Racing and the Nitro Madman Mark Sheehan. Hambridge and Newby punched out one of the quickest side by side passes ever seen in Australia with dual 4.61 second passes as Hambridge recorded the third fastest quarter mile pass in the world topping out at 336 mph. Damien Harris also went one better resetting his track record from 12 months prior thrilling the capacity crowd on a 4.581 second pass at 321.73 mph. In the Championship nitro bracket, Top Fuel Motorcycle made it’s return to Darwin following a two-year absence with a new winner standing on the podium.
For Damien Muscat, the victory came after qualifying sessions he would rather forget. However, it wasn’t enough to hold him back from taking wins from Greg Durack and Chris Porter on his way to the final against Mark Drew – where his 6.514 at 218.94 mph effort would better Drew’s 7.020 at 228.65mph pass. “This feels unreal. It couldn’t be better. We had a bad start in qualifying, it took us a bit to get a handle on the tune-up, but we just started stepping it up in eliminations and here we are,” said Muscat, who was third fastest at the end of three qualifying sessions on 24 hours earlier. “The rest of the race day went pretty good. I am lost for words as to what actually happened in our qualifying sessions – we missed one run as we had a rookie mistake

and left the fuel pump out and didn’t put it back in so one was a cancelled run, and the other two were a 7.1 and a 7.04 I think. “We went 6.51 in the final which might be low ET, it was great to have the bike turned around, and a big thanks to our sponsors and crew and everyone.” Gary Phillips would overcome a slippery run to the Top Doorslammer winners circle, but he held on to take the victory from Mark Belleri with a 5.949 at 245.36 mph effort to Belleri’s 6.473 at 165.76 mph result. On his way to the final, he defeated Sam Fenech and Ben Bray while Belleri took on Vcitor Bray and John Zappia. “That was great. I love coming up here, it is fantastic, it is just a pity it is so hot!” said Phillips, who along with his fellow Top Doorslammer racers will also compete in next weekend’s Desert Nationals.

northernlights “The car was good and we come up here with the attitude - especially with Alice Springs next weekend and the Northern Territory Government doing an awesome job up here helping out – of putting on a great show for the crowd and they were just fantastic – tonight there was the most people I have ever seen here before, it was really good. “For Lucas Oil and Speedflow and everyone else that helps us, we didn’t back into this one, this was an earned deal. “Race day today was great. We had a bit of selected shuffling with qualifying which is why we didn’t do the last session, as we looked at the ladder and said we can run 90 and we know it can go faster. It was a bit of a Russian roulette type of deal, but it played out well and every run was great.” The Hidden Valley Drag Strip also hosted a frenetic weekend of racing for the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series with Top Sportsman Champion Jason Stares joined in the winners’ circle by Joel Burns (Summit Racing Equipment Junior Dragster), Grant Radcliffe (Modified), Matt Lisle (Modified Bike), Kim Fardella (Super Comp), Chris Parris (Super Sedan), Tim Bryan (Super Street) and Adam Murrihy (Supercharged Outlaws). To say the last 12 months of Stares’ racing career has been phenomenal would be an understatement. Until last season, he had never won an ANDRA tree, with his 2015/2016 season finally seeing him take out two silver trees and the gold at the Grand Final on his way to taking out the ultimate gold trophy as Champion. He would take on Todd Knight in round one before enjoying a bye run on his way to a finals victory over Ben Phillips. Stares was just one of a host of racers who had travelled to Darwin for the first time, joined by racers including (but not limited to) Craig Geddes (Competition Champion), Kim Fardella (Super Stock Champion), Bryan Finn (Modified Bike Champion), Vlado Turic (Super Sedan), Mark Hunt, Doina Day and Justin Russell (Supercharged Outlaws), John Kapiris (Super Sedan Champion), David Yanko and George Tipouikidis (Super Sedan), Matt Lisle (Super Compact Champion
on this occasion racing on two wheels) and Daniel Carranza (Summit Racing Equipment Junior Dragster). “I didn’t think we had won – Benny Phillips put up a hell of a fight. We crossed the line and he crossed first but unfortunately broke out by eight thousandths. I feel bad for him but I feel great as well to get another win,” said Stares, who took the win with a 7.34 at 195.36 mph pass on a 7.29s dial-in from Phillips’ 8.482 at 159.51 mph result on a 8.49s dial-in. “Benny had a bit of drama starting up there for the final - he had a fire come out and so we shut down and waited for him to put the fire out and clean the car up, and then we fired up again and raced him. At the end of the day we were the lucky ones. “Defending the Championship is what it is all about isn’t it, going for number two, and we couldn’t have had a better start – it is unbelievable. “As usual the car was absolutely killer. I think we put down three 7.30s, a 7.28s and a 7.31s pass so the car was faultless. The driver could probably use a little bit of polishing, but we will get there for next weekend. “We can’t wait (for the Alice Springs event) – for racing new tracks and new people, with a bit of a holiday in between. “I have got to say a massive thank you to Jeff Pahlke at Lucas Oil Australia – there is no way we could have come up here to both the races without his support. Also to Aaron and Bruno at VPW Australia, Pro Flow, Sunoco, SunX and Sunset Performance Engines.” In Modified Bike, New South Welshman and current Super Compact Champion Matt Lisle swapped four wheels for two, enduring the road trip from hell ahead of his victory. On his way to hoisting the trophy, he took on Leigh Darrach, Brian Hotker and Heath Costello before facing Murray High in the final. He would take victory with a 10.258s pass at 124.65 mph (10.18 dial-in) from High’s 9.909 at 137.34 mph result (9.76 dial-in). “This feels pretty surreal,” said Lisle.
“We had the road trip from hell – I hit a kangaroo somewhere between St George and Mitchell and that sent us flying off the road, and then the trailer has hit something else. I didn’t realise it had broken the trailer at the time, I was a couple of hundred ‘ks’ up the road and I thought the bike looks a bit funny, so I got out, and everything was just a mess. “I have broken or scratched every faring on the bike, the trailer is broken and has no mud guards on it - I had more bike straps holding the trailer together than

the bike on the trailer! For me, just getting to the front gate was a win. “But race day was awesome. I couldn’t have dreamt it to go any better. It was just like one obstacle at a time and it just got better and better and I just started cutting better lights - I struggled with lights for a little while. I said to Phil that it is mainly because of the car (Lisle is the reigning Super Compact Champion). “Because it has got enough to run home pretty hard I am getting lazy, so I have been really crappy on the tree, but the last two runs tonight was a 0.50 and a 0.40 reaction times, which is sort of where I need to be. “In the final, I took two looks in the mirror and (Murray High) was still behind me so I rolled off early and I thought, okay, this is it, I’ve won. It was good!” In Super Comp, Kim Fardella’s victory came after dispatching fellow West Aussies Dave Dequen and Jamie Chaisty in the earlier rounds, before facing Craig Geddes in the final. An 8.468 (8.72s dial-in) at 159.57 mph effort would see Fardella trump Geddes’ 7.412s (7.62s) at 175.27mph pass.It was Fardella’s second event win in a row following the Super Stock Championship clinching Grand Final
SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT SPORTSMAN SERIES last season while for Geddes, his finals appearance follows on from taking five wins from six finals last season, on his way to winning the Competition Eliminator Championship. For Super Sedan winner Chris Parris, victory came after taking on Darren Baumann, Travis Hagen, Des Groves and Daniel Franklin, with a finals effort of 9.339s at 142.93 mph (9.32 dial-in) handing him the trophy over Franklin’s 8.549s (8.58s) at 160.10mph pass. Super Sedan outfit Full Throttle Racing won the Gridstar by YBI Best Presented Team Award, with the team receiving Best Presented Trophy, six Best Presented caps and a $50 Summit Racing Equipment credit voucher. Summit Racing Equipment Junior Dragster winner Joel Burns impressed with wins over Madison Brown, Lachlan Slamar and Brooke Harris before defeating Jasmine Slamar in the final with a 8.279 (8.12s) at 74.88 mph pass; while in Super Street, Tim Bryan took on Sam Campbell and Allan Hutchen before taking victory with a 11.752s at 119.38 mph result in the final from a red-lighting Shaun Boyer.
Grant Radcliffe (8.296s at 140.80 mph) and Adam Murrihy (6.724s at 167.66 mph) found themselves taking home the winners’ trophy in the Modified and Supercharged Outlaws brackets. Radcliffe faced Bradley Hicks and Allan Arthus on his way to victory, while the top qualifying Murrihy took on and defeated Jay Bouchere, Alan Mahnkoph and Doina Day to kick off his title defence in style. ANDRA congratulates the Hidden Valley Drag Racing Association on a fantastic event and thanks the volunteers for their outstanding efforts prior to and throughout the weekend.

Top Doorslammer made it’s way to Alice Springs for the very first time in July joining the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series at the Desert Nationals. Alice Springs Inland Dragway has recently seen Government funded upgrades to imropvoe the facility to an international standard quarter mile. But unfortunately on this occasion, the cool Desert conditions saw the event shortened back to the eighth mile for everything but Super Sedan, Modified Bike and Super Street. That decision was justified when a two-car smash marred the first session of Doorslammer qualifying. Local Andrew Sutton got crossed up hitting the left hand wall before careening across the track in front of Rob Taylor who spun out’ avoiding the wayward Corvette and tagging the wall. Sutton was shaken but both drivers were checked by medical crews and given the all clear. John Zappia would go on sweep Top Doorslammer - top qualifying and taking the event victory whilst also resetting the track speed (193.97mph) and elapsed time (3.966s) eighth-mile distance records in the process. The journey to the final was marked by plenty of exciting racing, starting with the very first round. In that session there were plenty of gasps elicited from the crowd, with Zappia starting off his chase of the track records with a win
against Matt Abel including what was then the fastest speed on the ASID track. Rookie racer Sam Fenech also impressed, taking out a round one win against drag racing legend Victor Bray. Bray’s son Ben had better luck when it came to making it past the first round with a win over Mark Belleri, while Grant O’Rourke triumphed over Mark Chapman. The semi-final would see Zappia matched up with Fenech, while Benny ‘the kid’ Bray took on O’Rourke to proceed to a finals match-up against the defending and nine-time champion. The West Australian would pip the Queenslander in a close race, with his 3.966s at 193.97 mph effort resetting the track records. While Zappia would cross the line first after Bray bested his reaction time, Bray was never far behind - traversing the eighthmile distance in just 4.073 seconds at 187.50 miles per hour. “It feels absolutely fantastic to take the win, this follows a lot of effort from a lot of people,” said Zappia. “We have a new Noonan Racing engine in the car and we showed potential with one good run in Darwin. We came here though with a different mindset, looking to make the car consistent so

desert we can win races and not just run big numbers.
“We slowed it down – everyone did – because after the crash yesterday, everyone thought ‘nope’, we just have to get from A to B, and as an eighth mile race it puts a bit less stress on the engines and all of that. “So we backed it off and ran a heap of consistent 4.0s, and then tried to step it up for the second run and that didn’t work. It left harder, but it rattled earlier and got out of the groove a bit, so we ended up with a 4.00s again. “We thought, do we back it off or do we leave it? We ended up saying let’s leave it and I will drive it again and hopefully drive it a bit better and do the job,” laughed Zappia. “Benny got the holeshot on me, I had a bad light on that one. But the overall winning margin was 25 thousandths of a second, so there was not much in it at all at the finish line apparently. And we come away with a three second pass – the track record for ASID on the eighth mile, and also the overall speed record of nearly 194 miles per hour for this track.”
racing for round two of the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series with the Desert Nationals winner’s circle hosting Mark Hunt (Supercharged Outlaws), Luke Veersma (Summit Racing Equipment Junior Dragster), Gavin Chisnell (Modified), Leith Darrach (Modified Bike), Graeme Simms (Super Comp), Peter Tzokas (Super Sedan), Jacob Mills (Super Street) and Matt Forbes (Top Sportsman). Hunt’s victory marked his first ever national event win, with the Supercharged Outlaws racer locking away a number of impressive race wins against heavyhitters on his way to the Supercharged Outlaws final against Justin Russell. Hunt hoisted the ANDRA tree after turning a round one win against semi final-regular Doina Day into an upset round two win against top qualifier, current Champion and Nitro Up North winner Adam Murrihy into his finals date with Russell. His ultimate victory would come courtesy of a 4.981 at 142.41mph (4.95s dial-in) effort over Russell’s 4.439 at 160.14mph pass (4.40s dial-in).

“It feels fantastic to win. Absolutely fantastic,” said Hunt, whose win comes after 18 months out of the seat and despite almost not competing this weekend. “We had a bit of bad luck on the way coming down, blowing the bus motor up. That set us back a little bit and took my concentration away from the car and all of that sort of stuff, and after that happened I didn’t know if we were going to race here but I needed to race because the field was short. “So I thought, let’s just concentrate on (the racing) and forget about the bus for now, we will deal with that later. “The car was playing up a little bit here and there, it is a new combo, so just trying to get used to it and then all of a sudden my engine builder David Baines of Baines Engines got a hold of it. “My crew were fantastic and steered me in the right direction and then I just steered the car in the right direction and we just got through – it was amazing.
Doorslammerin the desert
We raced against three of the best drivers out there today one after another and that was just unbelievable. They are all switched on and are good racers and I have been out of the seat for over 18 months, so to come back in one meeting and do this is just fantastic. “In the final I just concentrated – I had my list from my engine builder telling what I had to do and I thought let’s just go out there and go for it, we have nothing to lose, we are going to be second anyway. But then everyone said to me ‘nah, nah we are going to be first!’ “I am really loving the pro tree – it is perfect for me as when the tree is on the left in my car I can’t see all of the lights, and with the pro tree you only need to see the first one. It was a good move by ANDRA to bring that in I think. “It has just been a buzz, a real buzz. It is so fantastic to be up there and ANDRA and everyone involved are just fantastic.” In the final of Top Sportsman, it was a battle of the Lucas Oilssupported racers, with Matt Forbes (5.001 at 143.33mph) taking on and defeating current Champ and Nitro Up North winner Jason Stares (4.796 at 146.10mph). For Stares, it was his third final in a row dating back to last season’s Grand Final, but this time it was Forbes who took the victory – his first ever event win in Top Sportsman after having previously won national events and Championships in Super Gas and Modified.
On his way to the victory, Forbes dispatched Frank Oliveri and top qualifier Dan Saliba, while Stares faced off and took victory from Rick Smith and Greg Damiani.
the final I was really tossing up on whether to set the dial-in at 4.99s or 5.0s – we went with a 5.0s as you can always turn a 4.99s into a 5.0s, but you can’t turn a 5.0s into a 4.99s!
“This is fantastic – this is the third category we have won in now – Super Gas, Modified and Top Sportsman – but to get a win in this class which I class as a really, really tough class against some of the best racers is very satisfying,” Forbes said.
“We went out there, I was under the impression I would hit the tree hard and Jason is a faster car and would chase me. I got to the end and didn’t see him so I dropped the nose, and went 5.001s – we were all pretty happy with that.”
“This is Frank and Gilbert Nichele’s car which they allowed me to drive for them, we brought it up and we had a real struggle in the first two qualifiers - we had to abort the passes as it was not going straight at all.
The Super Comp victory was taken out by Graeme Simms, who raced Louis Svingos for the event win (5.935s at 100.90mph v 7.993 at 58.67mph). The battle to make the final started off with some shock eliminations – with Competition Eliminator Champion Craig Geddes; Super Stock Champion and Nitro Up North winner Kim Fardella; and top qualifier Jamie Chaisty all eliminated in the first round.
“So we worked and worked and by the third qualifier we got it down the track in some fashion and then the fourth one was really good. When we started today the car just got better and better and the driving sort of got better as well! “We met Jason Stares in the final, we are both sponsored by Lucas Oil Products and Sunset Performance Engines. “Jason is a tough racer, there is no doubt about that. That is why he carries the number one on the side of his car, so to race him and then to beat him was very satisfying – he is a great racer and I have a lot of respect for him. “The car was pretty much on the 5.001s all day, and we went out and won the semi-final and I had dropped the nose a little bit at the end. So for
While the racing might not have gone Chaisty’s way, he does still walk away from Alice Springs with something to smile about, having reset his big brother’s national H/MSA record to 5.928s at 115.38mph - at the same track and in the same car. Also setting a new national record was Super Comp racer David Dequen (eliminated round two) who with an E/AA 145.16mph effort beat his own record which he had originally set at ASID last year. “It feels great to win, it has been a long time! I have been out of the seat for four and a half years now, so it has been great to get back in the seat,” said Simms.
SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT SPORTSMAN SERIES
“We struggled mightily in Darwin but it all came good today – it is just a matter of me getting in the car again, I am forgetting all sorts of things, at 70 years of age you tend to do that,” he laughed. “We went our fastest ever last night in the 60 foot time and mile per hour, so we were pretty wrapped on that. And then in the first round we had a tough one with Kim, we knew he would be tough, and then the second round was even tougher with Dave Dequen, if he hadn’t of bolted I think Dave would have had us. And then we raced Louis - I knew he is sharp on the lights so we had to have our A-game on at the lights. I kind of missed them but he missed them a lot more so it was kind of over at the start. “It feels good to be back in the seat, and it feels great to have a win too. It was tough - all the racing was tough this weekend, so to go through and get to the final and win, I will take it! I am wrapped.” In Summit Racing Equipment Junior Dragster, Luke Veersma (8.146s at 79.65mph) took the win from Alanah Cope (8.234 at 78.53mph) after having earlier raced Lachlan Slamar, Daniel Carranza and Kelly Donnelly. On her way to the final, Cope took race wins against Mikey Naylor, Madison Brown and Ross Spadaro. In Super Sedan, Peter Tzokas (9.859 at 135.55mph) triumphed over the ‘breaking out’ George Tipouikidis (10.238 at 129.40mph). On their way to the finals, Tzokas faced off against David Yanko, Mike Brideson, and
Darren Baumann; while Tipouikidis emerged with race wins from Brett Matthew, Ned Karanovic, and Steve Hunt. For the Super Street bracket, it was Jacob Mills (12.211 at 93.39mph, 12.1s dial-in) who left with the winner’s trophy after taking on Allan Hutchen (11.451 at 110.62mph, 11.3s dial-in) in the finals. Earlier, Mills defeated Matthew Jarvis and Paul Garbellini, while Hutchen raced against Conan Latham, Craig Caton and Simon Lazzaro. Victory in the Modified bracket went to Gavin Chisnell (5.395 at 129.68mph) from the red-lighting Zac Shepherd (5.578 at 120mph). Chisnell had earlier faced off against Chris Farrell and Leanne Braggs – whose outfit won the Gridstar by YBI Best Presented Team Award, with the team receiving the Best Presented Trophy, six Best Presented caps and a $50 Summit Racing Equipment credit voucher. On two-wheels, the Modified Bike win was taken out by Leith Darrach (10.095 at 145.50mph) from current champion Bryan Finn (11.186 at 117.08mph). It was
Finn’s third straight Desert Nationals final (winner in 2014, runner-up in 2015) and he lead all the way and was certain of the win, but broke-out by going faster than his 11.20s dial-in. ANDRA congratulates the Central Australian Drag Racing Association and Alice Springs Inland Dragway on a fantastic event and thanks the volunteers for their outstanding efforts throughout. The next round of the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series will be at the Mildura Sunset Strip across October 22-23, 2016. For more information, visit www.sunsetstrip.org.au
