6 - CONCLUSION

ROCCA MEDIEVALE It’s a medieval fortress that was constructed with the objective of fulfilling tactic and defensive functions. The fortress is constructed over a hill near the urban center of the town of Arquata del Tronto. It is a typical example of military architecture with a compact and austere aspect surrounded by a densely green area. La Rocca was classified as a National Italian Monument in 1902. The Rocca Medievale was built between the XIII and XV century, experiencing various interventions until the present day. Its materiality is composed mainly of blocks of local sandstone, and it is formed by a compound of a relatively quadrangular central space, a hexagonal base tower, the main tower, and partially conserved perimetral walls.

ARQUATA DEL TRONTO ASCOLI PICENO PROVINCE, MARCHE REGION

The numerous restorations that the Rocca has experienced over the years have contributed to first, the improvement of the security and the defensibility of the fortress, and second to the maintenance of the integrity of the building.

In August of 2016, the town of Arquata del Tronto suffered an earthquake that produced important damages in the structure and integrity of the Rocca Medievale.

2014 BEFORE THE EARTHQUAKE

2018 AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE

The natural disaster caused the collapse of architectural details and ornaments of the towers as affectations in the inner and outer structural composition of the building, which led once again the Rocca to a new restoration.

REPORT ON THE DESIGN PROPOSAL

The main concept of the design proposal focuses on the idea of the “journey” which consists of the town, the landscape around it, the Rocca and the interventions. The journey starts with a promenade path, which consists of two existing routes that lead the visitors to the castle through the town below. On the step way up to the Rocca, different green areas open on the street and serve as spaces for rest and contemplation of the natural landscape. From here the visitors follow the main route until they reach a grassy plain that stretches around the medieval Rocca. A first intervention on the building is done on the main entrance of the east facade making it more visible and is extruded out of the wall, while the space right outside of the entrance and the Bastione Tower serve as a sitting area.

P R ES E RVAT I O N S T U D I O

The idea of the journey is presented also inside of the Rocca. The visitors come through the main entrance to a circulation route that starts with the groud floor, where wine cultivation methods and tools are presented and the route continues up to balcony, where one can find an exhibition of wine history. On the second floor there is also a wine tasting room and class room for educational purposes. Inside of the castle, the exhibition wine ENLARGEMENT OFon THE PATH TO CREATE A PUBLIC COMMON SPACE cultivation and educational spaces are incorporated into the internal floor plan which has an area of 373 sq. m, of which 200 sq m ground floor. The elevated floor, roughly 3m high, is working also as a support for the PANORAMIC main structure of the Rocca. The balcony PEDESTRIAN is POINT OF VIEW accessible through a encased-metal staircase. As a last intervention we thought of a reconstruction of the Bastione Circolare on the south-west side of the Rocca. The tower is visible from the road that leads to the city and the structure is light and porous in order leave the corner of the castle visible from outside. This acts as the final step of the journey, representing what was ruined by the historical earthquake event in Arquata Del Tronto. The journey ends through the crafted path back down to the town, similar to the way it begins.

RECONSTRUCTION STRATEGY

For the reconstruction strategy of the town of Arquata del Tronto, the study and application of resilience as a conceptual theme gains relevance. People has the necessity of having places not only functional but also instructive, they look for environments that are a representation of their social aspirations, customs and community values. Resilience means the overall goal of decreasing human vulnerability, in other words, resilience consists in the ability of remaining in existence, to sustain a period of hardship or difficulty and the capacity to recover from unavoidable consequences of disasters. When the urban space of a town is strike by a natural disaster as an earthquake, not only the authenticity of the architectural substance but the restitution of a cultural identity of an urban space could be justified by the need to unite a broken society.

P R ES E RVAT I O N S T U D I O

ROCCA MEDIEVALE ARQUATA DEL TRONTO

Urban heritage conservation and recreation as resilience strategies can contribute giving traumatized societies a sense of continuity and localness. Previous studies of affected cities that develop narratives of resilience towards their renovation, reveal that the pragmatic process of urban recovery is always fuelled by highly symbolic actions. With this theoretical base, a strategy of urban reconstruction is proposed for Arquata, stablishing main themes and a timeline for its application.

MAIN THEMES OF RECONSTRUCTION

1. CONSTRUCTION AND RECONSTRUCTION OF THE JOURNEY

First step of reconstruction of the Rocca and its surroundings should be the necessary path forming. Because of the altitude differences, this part is quite tricky. The formed path would function as a route for construction workers and the material transfer. We propose both reconstructing the existing path from town to the Rocca and creating a temporary path for bigger vehicles. After some preliminary reconstruction has been done, the accessible path can be created.

4. PREVENTION

2. RUBBLES IN THE TOWN

5. ROCCA AND THE TOWN

The current condition of the rubbles in the town is dangerous for anyone visiting it. For a second stage we propose cleaning and removal of the rubbles from necessary areas. This way any desired form of reconstruction is safe and possible.

3. INFRASTRUCTURE

Many past case studies show, that a successful post-earthquake reconstruction process requires a rapid recovery of infrastructure. Before any actual construction can be done, should the infrastructure be restored and possibly even improved. As the first stage of our proposal indicates, roads are essential part of infrastructure. In addition to that, new pipelines and electricity can be installed.

Unfortunately, in many cases like this, investment and planning of prevention from the future earthquakes is often inadequate. We propose reinforcing the soil by adding vegetation i.e. trees for preventing landslides. Also, creating reinforced levels in form of “terraces” for future building foundations, so that next earthquake would not be so devastating.

Restoration of the town is a very long process. Many studies show, that the longer it takes for a city to recover from an earthquake, the smaller chances it has for regaining the previous status. Reconstruction of the Rocca and the town could happen in few stages starting from the smaller things. We propose for a first-hand solution to create a familiar character of the city: restoring the survived facades on the main road and reconstructing other signature features of the town, such as the square and the bell tower. At the same time the construction work at Rocca can be started: adding the interventions, starting from inside. As for the rest, reconstructing other individual buildings in town and landscaping around Rocca can be done when suited, for it is something that has to be done after all of the stages mentioned.

POROSITY, MONUMENTALITY Modern circular tower proposed to symbolize the now demolished tower, to be used as a structural support to west and south walls while also serving as and exit from the Rocca. On top of the tower a connection to terrace and to viewing deck. Vertical movement is possible between terrace and ground floor. The porous material of wooden fins doesn’t steal the attention from the Rocca, but rather highlights the union of materials and the contextual surroundings.

DAMAGED STATE, BULGDING

The Rocca has patches on the walls that are “bulging”. The two layers of stones are falling appart. The exterior level is heavely damaged or destroyed. This is problematic for multiple reasons : fragilization of the parts structurally sollicited, infiltration of water but also of vegetation, rats, dust, the stones are supporting each other so that kind of damage expendS, the missing stones make the surrounding strones fall too. This problem can happen for different reason and is common, usually the structure moves or is sollicitated in inadequate way (we can think here about the hearthquake) and the internal forces bulge the walls until the stones finally fall. One recognized and sure solution is to : 1. clean as much as possible the exposed internal layer 2. reconstruct the missing part reinforcing by transversal stones called header stones. For non completly destroyed part header stones can be used too, replacing stones or injecting cement. ENTRANCE VIEW BEFORE / AFTER

MAIN ENTRANCE AND VIEWING DECK To contrast the stone wall, a lightweight wood panelling is used in external interventions. In east facade the main entrance in upgraded to match the project vision of modernisation of Rocca, creating a experience-like passage to inside. Also, the new viewing deck on the top circles from the original tower to the additional tower in the south-west corner, making the visitor’s path continuous. The area in front of the Muro est is preserved as it is, the only addition being chairs and tables for leisure. The cheaper wood material is more suited to the town context, allowing a more sustainable approach to design.
