Oggetto:
lettera di referenze per Andrea Aica
Andrea ha collaborato inizialmente con il mio formativo connesso con il suo piano di studi. Genova, Italy 10th June 2014
Milan, Italy 8th September 2014 To whom it may concern, The purpose of this letter is to recommend Andrea Aicardi, who has worked in our office as team’s member for the International Design Competition Guggenheim Museum in Helsinki. In that time Andrea performed with success all tasks expected in a professional and competent manner. Andrea is an individual with positive attitude who accept responsibility to complete a task with little direction. He is a good team player and has a deep understanding of contemporary architecture. In addition, Andrea has excellent skills for modeling and parametric architecture. Andrea worked on architectural drawings, 3D modelling with different programs, images, plans and he play a key role in term of architectural research and design. It has been a pleasure working with Andrea, he has always dedicated and passionate about his work. His drive and abilities will truly be an asset to any office he goes to in the future.
To whom it may concern, Andrea worked in my architectural office during a period of apprenticeship of his University. In this period I valued some interesting personal and professional characteristics that bring me to involve Andrea to other works of the office. I involve Andrea in two different project characterized in two different scale. The first one was a concept for the restyling of the first floor of the WTC Building in Genova. The second was a masterplan ( residential building and school complex ) in Segrate, close to Milano. We also join some project connected on the urban mobility and the competition Via Cornigliano ( reconfiguration of the main road of Cornigliano, Genova). For every occasion Andrea Aicardi showed uncommon characteristics ad significant growth opportunities. Thanks to his inclination to theory research and his personal interest on architectural software form the basic ones to the most interesting parametric design and software focus on form finding techniques. Andrea has great skill to manage work and is able to coordinate the activities of a team, becoming the reference for the colleagues. The level achieved in the various areas combined with ability, passion and personality constitutes an added value to any future professional collaboration.

The question of structural morphology in our time is face from architect and engineer in an innovative way, the application of computational software helps to solve ever more complex problems. Engineer community of 50 years ago knew that the use of classic analysis method offered extremely limited tools for the study of mechanical behaviour and consequently it’s was necessary to add to mathematical analysis lot of years of experience. Empiricism play a key role in design, when you think to Gaudì, and his Sagrada Familia, or Musumeci who used incredible strategies (such as bubble blower) to control the form. Following the path traced by the work of architect Arata Isozaki, and especially his collaboration with Mutsuro Sasaki in the project of railway station of Florence and the national convention centre in Qatar, I tried to use the same principles of topology optimization in a large scale project. The task was to enforce the Extended Evolutionary Structure Optimization (ESO) principles used on the projects mentioned above to design the airport of Fiumicino north, in Rome (Italy), order to do this I used a Grasshopper™, and therefore a Rhino plug-in called Millipede. Millipede is a Grasshopper™ component focusing on the analysis and optimization of structures. At the core of this component is a library of very fast structural analysis algorithms for linear elastic systems. The library contains its own optimization algorithms based on topology optimization; the plug-in, developed by Sawapan (Kaijima Sawako and Michalatos Panagiotis) allows to process very interesting solutions to complex structural problems. The result is an indefinite unique shape, a kind of cave that surrounds passengers from the entrance to the flight interface.

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in Helsinki: A Cultural Dérive through art, entertainment and knowledge. The history of Solomon R. Guggenheim’s Museum is made by love and passion for knowledge. Any foundation, museums and collectors have been able to drive with such as passion and devotion, a way of training and culture through art like Guggenheim. The extraordinary figure of Peggy Guggenheim and her travels to the discovery knowledge through art, can be compared to the great journey led by Ferdinando Magellano, Cristoforo Colombo and Neil Armstrong 2 ‐ The contribution of these figures have brought knowledge and culture to the present day and beyond. The new Guggenheim Museum in Helsinki redrawing the geography of the Foundation, bringing a new piece of knowledge in the city of Helsinki; knowledge’s journey goes to the north, as never been done before. The Guggenheim’s identity, his prestige, what is in our modern culture, combined with the tradition and culture of the North’s country and Finland, establish a trigger for new opportunities of learning and knowledge. The new museum has been designed as landscape within the city of Helsinki where, through an architectural space proposed as Cultural Dérive 3, offers to the city a public path as continuation of “urban walking” and opportunity to experien-
ce the museum without necessarily pay a ticket. The different access points are all merged into the Great Hall where ticket office, shops, cafes and a space for artworks offers a new public destination with many opportunities to meet, network and entertainment. The Great Hall hosts a series of ramps that lead to the various floors, where visitors makes their Cultural Dérive through exhibition as Experience4 more than a typical museum’s journey. The exhibition rooms offers to the visitor a panorama view overlooking the harbor and the city to ensuring the continuity between urban space and museum ‐ while two asymmetrical cores offers facilities and logistic services. The two middle volumes hosts the permanent collections and the main facilities while the workshop spaces, the multi‐functional and the art storage are placed in the south volume; the idea is to reveal and show, through a series of common areas, the process of art: from the storage till to creation of an artwork. The proposal Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in Helsinki is an intensive space where arts, entertainment and knowledge lead new opportunity and innovation for Helsinki and for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.
