Brief, Deliverables, Concept & Collaboration

Brief -

Concept -

Produce a new conversational print for Cath Kidston

The YCN brief asked for a pattern which celebrated English heritage or British sense of humour. Lisa and I decided to take our pattern design down the theme of ‘afternoon tea’ as this is something which is coming back into fashion within the UK.

Deliverables -

Collaboration -

A new conversational print for the Cath Kidston range, presented in both stepped out and repeat tile variations and within 3 colour ways.

As Lisa and I both have different skills and styles, we thought that we would compliment each other on this particular brief and therefore we each worked on different parts of it seperately and also collaboratively.

Contextual Research

Contextual research When we ďŹ rst began the brief, we both researched together into conversational repeat patterns. This gave us an understanding of the sort of pattern that the brief was asking for. We also looked at the aesthetic style of illustrations used in different conversational patterns.

Design Development

Initial design development When we began the brief, I started by producing the basic illustrations that we could then work with further. The illustrations on the left are the originals, which Lisa then took on and developed and explored different layout options. We then left the brief for a couple of months, and on coming back to it we decided to structure the pattern as an actual layout rather than just a

simple repeat pattern. This led me onto adding to the illustrations to build an afternoon tea set up. Lisa then completed extra little illustrations, such as the teabags and strawberries, before we worked together to produce a pattern layout and ďŹ nalise colour schemes.

Stepped Out Pattern

Finished illustrations These are the ďŹ nal ďŹ nished illustrations that form the stepped out patterns. While I produced the majority of the illustrations on the left, Lisa then added the strawberries on the right to break up the pattern background and draw the viewers eye around the pattern.

Repeat Patterns

Finished repeat patterns This is the ďŹ nished repeat pattern in the three different colour ways that Lisa and I decided upon together. We decided to replicate the current Cath Kidston ranges when deciding on colour schemes as they use three very different colour ways; one light, one dark and one in between. One important decision for us was to keep the

content of the patterns consistently the same colours across each different colour way and do instead adapt and change the backgrounds. We thought the colour schemes we had chosen were all feminine and eye catching and would suit the Cath Kidston brand.

Pattern In Context

Context Once we had ďŹ nished the patterns, we looked briey at how they would appear in context. The YCN brief stated that the pattern would need to be suitable to be applied across the womens clothing, womens accessories and homeware ranges of Cath Kidston products. For example, I have mocked our pattern up onto a Cath Kidston glasses case.
