MODULE 1 How to draw a croissant? The first module of the semester involved producing technical drawings of a croissant. After photographing each elevation and scanning the whole croissant, using photoshop and as the main software to edit and modificate pictures togather. Printing the edited picture out and starting to draw the outline. Use several layers to do hitching and add them together in the last step. For the outline, a thicker line weight was used on the section cut to emphasise the overall shape. Using 0.1 and 0.4 fine line pens and developing the technique produced the desired result. To achieve the shading a variety of lead weight were used.

Cutting the croissant to with three section and scan them. Then, hatching the cutting sections and draw out main points. Using these points layout the cuting secton and cutting lines without the croissant itself. Study the cross section gives people a clear structure about its interor, which helps the development of analyseing buildings’ interior construction.

MODULE 2 Flatness vs Projection The second module of the semester aims to take students create axonometric projections. Each student was given two different stills from Mario World. These would become the basis of their axonometric drawings, which would involved projecting each of the worlds and combining them on square area. Students are allowed to create their own style and new terms in their own Mario World as long as they follow the theme. Then, students need to use Adobe Illustrator to add colors and characters. The most significant learning value came of the module arose form, as students were exposed to the idea of the flatness in the images and how this can be interpreted in countless different ways through projection.

After managing the character in the drawing. Using Adobe Illustrater to coloring the Mario World. It would be better if students try to add more than one style and choose the most suiyable one as the final work.

Layout the cutting section as well as all the pipes. Putting in relavent charaters and decorating your world based on the theme. The final picture will be shown as an axonometric projection.

MODULE 3 Pattern vs Surface The second module of this semester aims to take students into 3D modelling software and fabrication. The task involved using Rhinoceros with paneling tools to model a 3D panelled surface with different elements to be built. Students are able to create their own 3D modules and add them together, which following the terrain of their own panels. After editing in the computer, students need to unroll them and made a module with Ivory card by hand.

Creating several elements and adding together to make the panel special and creative. This project students to introduced the power of Rhinocerus’ 3D paneling tools, and the process of executeing their representations through fabrication techniques

All of there surfaces are unrolled line by line. Named the ten lines with A, B, C, D,...J and numbered the individual surface with A1, A2, A3, B1,B2......J4, J5. Printing them out on 30 A3 normal pages and put them on the Ivory card. Then, cutting them together so that there won’t be any pencil traces. Finally, link them line by line to make a perfect module. MODULE 4 Frame vs Field The final module in this semester required students to harness the software skills they leart from the previous modules to tell a story through perspective and notations. Students can use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrater, Indesign as well as Rhinoceros to create to perspective view of the old quad based on their given story. Each student was given a short story from Marco Polo about city and memory. Students need to present these through notations in a real world and twoperspective view with characters, objects, lighting and textures. To begin with this module, students need to put chosen characters into the Old Quad in 3D Rhinocero, then, choose two suitable perspective view and export to Adobe software to do the following editing.

Viewing symbol. Movement Perspective 1 Perspective2 Crowds/People in Pespective 1 Crowds/People in Pespective 2 Heavy Mood/Feeling Light Mood/Feeling Lighting curve

The movement symbol will lead people go though the whole city and tell you all of its past. Starting walking from the top corner, where can see three fishmen talking the past of Zaira behind the first column. Then, there is a perspective view about the queen’s mismarriage. Finally, after the naval battle, the usurper--queen’s illegitimate was punished to death. Page 19 of 23

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2

View 1 is defined as a matting, which has a broad field of vision that don’t need to adsorb too many sences, but shows the background. There is less column of the old quad but shows a lot of the outside view.

View 2 is defined as the peak, which contains much more stories than view one. The constructure of the building is more complex and shows more spaces. There is not much sunshine, which is also the way of represent the atmosphere of the peak time.

Perspective View 1

In this picture, there is a queen’s wedding scene and a skeleton. The background of this perspective view is a castle, which located nearby the sea. The column of this picture is magnificent but the atmosphere is quirky. As the given story states that there was a wedding hold for the queen in this city. Depends on the following events of the wedding, it is clearly that the queen does not show respect for this marriage. She has adulterer and even has an illegitimate son. Thus, the skeletons in this picture represents this mismarriage as well as do the foreshadowing for the next tragedy. In this picture, there is a queen’s wedding scene and a skeleton. The background of this perspective view is a castle, which located nearby the sea. The column of this picture is magnificent but the atmosphere is quirky.

Perspective View 2

Perspective view 2 contains a group of people who have argument with the queen, a fugitive, who want to escape from the disaster and a black cat. The background of this view is a war happend on the sea. As the story show that, the usurper, queen’s illegitimate son, waged a maritime war. However, he failed and hanged to death. The men in this view represents people who want to escape from the war, which waged by the usurper or the usurper himself when he knew that he was failed and punishied to death but he want to escape. One sence in this city is that when the queen’s adulterer jumped out of the window, there was a black cat doing the same action. People say that black cat go through in front of someone means that unfortunate thing will happen on that person. Thus, the black cat here represents adversity.

REFLECTION I think FOD really bring me to the world of design, it is just like the gate of being an architect. All of the lectures and studios are useful and meaningful because they provide students a creative and positive atmosphere to manage and edit each module. Lectures give me basic principels of achieving successful models and following tasks which would be helpful to make my assessment better. Moreover, these classes also taught me how to distinguish different architectural nouns as well as how to describe those unfamiliar world that I never notice before, such as the difference between perspective and axonometric. FOD enriched my design skills both in phsical and technologic aspects. After finishing this semester, I really know how to use Adobe photoshop, illustrator , indesign and Rhinoceros to make required models. The overall project turned out to be successful and gave me lot of drawing skill from doing assignmnet. This subjects also taught me how to divergent thinking on the normal basis and create someting new and interesting. In particular, preciseness, accuracy and creativity are basic rules that I need to follow when design something. Checking all elements which are strongly related to one module and make them as accurate as possible is one of the principle to make a successful module. Moreover, cooperation is also important. Although each student was required to make one’s own modules, he/she needs help from others no matter in sortware or physical activities. Sortwares assignments that were taught in workshops are much more difficult than I thought before, thus, discussion with classmates and modificaton for each other are necessary. Module one brough me hand drawings skills and introduced photoshop, which lay the foundation for the following works. Compare with module one, the second module was much more creative but difficult. It not only taught me how to make 2D to 3D, but also needs more technologic skills. Module 3 taught me a new sortware named Rhinoceros, which help me make 3D models and practiced my physical skills while making it. Module 4 was great way to combine all the skills learnt throughout the semester, which contains all sortware works and academic knowledge. All hard work pays off. Note: Changes were made on Module 2 & 4. In module 2, all of the pipes are changed to be circles. In module 4, exchange the black cat to the queen in pespective view 2.
