RAKOS CREEK PARK program

The design of the park was developed for a design course I took during my interchange studies in Budapest. The proposal was to re qualify the space that nowadays already works as a park.

3

analysis

The design site is located in Budapest, in a mixed used zone (residential with local businesses). Recent new buildings bring along new families to the region (mostly young families) and make it necessary to restructure the space with contemporary uses while being very careful not to exclude the present users. The main feature of the site, the creek, makes for a location very susceptible to become an urban green corridor, and a hub for the integration of a new community. Most of the actual park structures are focused on passive observation and playgrounds. The micro spaces are comfortable with well developed vegetation species. Free space and nice vegetation are the strengths of the place. The topography here is also very interesting, the micro spaces in the interior of the park are down and the surroundings and the margins of the creek are up-ground, which make for places insulated from the urban noise, but also keeps the interior of the park apart from the water.

concept

Structure new uses, restructure the existing ones, turning the space into a place dynamic and diverse, to meet the interest of new and old neighbors.

design proposal

1. A dry square, central entrance for the diverse paths inside the park. 2. Here is the lower part of the terrain. A new hill is inserted integrated to wooden playground structures; a pool with water from the creek that runs through the park; differentiated playground units for different ages. 3. The main road of the lower level of the park connects the main insertions of the proposal. A small canal runs through the promenade, representing a branch of the creek.

4. A central building for a coffee in the middle high grounds is also in the crossing of the main paths of the park. 5. Again a lower portion of the topography, but this time, a place for relaxing and tranquility. That’s where the creek enters the park, bringing along green and creating an island surrounding the inserted community library equipment. 6. Towers are raised in the site indicating that we are the ones to watch the places we own. These towers are niches in diverse height levels, visible landmarks, gazebo’s with a view of the surrounding.

They also participate in the illumination of the park and in the playgrounds. 7. Staircases are inserted along the creek as a means of interaction between people and the creek, as stop points along the pathway, as means of socialization. 8. The east entrance is structured for the day-by-day exercising of the neighbors, with open gym equipments, bike racks and drinking water fountains under the shadows of the previously existing trees.

community info hub

Made of wood and conduits, and surrounded by the creek branch, is a reading island, for the community to share books and magazines. Equipped with light and power plugs it makes for a place of information exchange, being it through physical or virtual means. The creek branch encompass the area, without totally insulating it from the surroundings. It brings along hedges and grassy grounds making for spaces of tranquility and relaxation complemented with the running water sound.

promenade The main path for the lower portion of the park’s topography, it’s the connection between the info hub and the leisure grounds, and the new creek branch also runs through by . This pathway receives planting of new hedges, flowers and grassy

grounds. New benches are allocated and new illumination systems were designed, one zigzagging through the towers, the other shedding a faint light in the water through the walls of the artificial creek branch.

Alongside the creek are the everyday pathways, where people move to the train and metro stations. The allocation of a bridge makes for a new transposition point and for a central line for the park.

JOSEF NADOR SQUARE program

The design of the square was developed for a design course I took during my interchange studies in Budapest. The proposal was to re qualify the space that nowadays already works as square.

analysis

The design site in Budapest’s central region is surrounded by a huge range of services and institutions. It’s also located in a neighborhood with plenty urban open spaces with diverse planned uses. Most of this square’s uses are during daytime, by the workers that have their lunch and breaks under the trees shadows, and the huge amount of pedestrians passing by. The place is an important crossroad for diverse paths that happen daily in the center. At the middle-point rests a statue of Joszef Nador, important figure in Hungary’s history.

concept

The design intends to improve the connexions between the important places in the surroundings, by upgrading the possible pathways. It also aims to value the historical symbol and to organize the square as a relaxation site for the local workers.

design proposal 1. The bus stop is restructured now concentrating more seats under a roof. The existing trash bins are reallocated behind this new equipment. 2. The northwest entrance gains area and an open view of the renewed urban space. 3. The parking lots are moved underground to leave and accessed by two new ramps. 4. New furniture that raise the number of seats in the square and also participate in the new lighting. 5. The central point, where there’s Joszef Nador’s statue, is sunk and receives water from the two channels (that run through the main pathway), making for a water mirror, surrounding the

1 statue and replacing the actual chains. The water mirror is surrounded by stairs that provide improvised seats. 6. The preexisting idea of tree lines that follow the most dynamic pathways in the square is kept as it’s a valuable feature from the previous design. 7. A new fountain is created in the shape of a crater, being so contrasting with the surrounding neoclassic shapes. The new feature is meant for fun and contemplation. 8. A new furniture with seats and bike racks, some for the city’s rental bike system, some free for any bike user. 9. The underground level for the parking lots taken from the streets.

PARKLETS program

A The parklets proposal for local streets of district XIII of Budapest (HU) was developed during a integrated design workshop.

analysis

The analysis quickly concluded the lack of green through the district, in comparison to the other districts of central Budapest, and the space priority for cars and car parking, even in the smaller local streets.

15

concept Create a modular equipment that would bring greenery and daily usage for the local streets of district XIII.

1. Module resting - support to comerce and stops along the pathways.

4. Module reading - open library.

2. Module stage - support for events and street artists, common in Budapest.

5. Module GYM

design proposal The design proposal is based on modular parklets, each one taking the area of 2 to 3 parking spaces, with diverse uses, suppressing the car space in the local streets. The allocation of this parklets make the car path zigzag in order to slow the speed in this streets. The proposed modules can be used in different compositions in order to create squares in empty lots.

3. Module playground.

6. Module landscape - insertion of vegetation, water and seats.

THEORETICAL PRODUCTION

SEEKING OUT DESIGN GUIDELINES FOR THE SURROUNDINGS OF MULTIFAMILIAR SOCIAL HOUSING: case study of two residencials in Vitória - E.S.

From august of 2012 to august of 2013 I worked as research intern for Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa e Inovação do Espírito Santo (FAPES) under the guidance of professor Dr. Karla Kaser from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES). The research was under the topic “The surroundings of multifamily Social Housing” and resulted in the year of 2013 in two articles published in national crongresses anals. The full 6 years research, in which I took part for the period of 2012/2013 was published as a book called “Buscando diretrizes de projeto para espaços públicos: praças, parques, vias e entorno de habitação de interesse social” - Seeking out design guidelines for open spaces: squares, parks, streets and surroundings of social housing - of which I became co-author of chapter IV. The book’s ISBN is: 978-3-330-74569-8

André G. Tauffer (1); Vitor C. Fraga (2) (1) Graduation student of Architecture and Urbanism, Intern at FAPES, andregiraotauffer@hotmail.com (2) Graduation student of Architecture and Urbanism, Intern at PIBIC-UFES, cfraga.vitor@gmail.com Abstract: One of the main roles of the habitation surroundings (social housing included) is to provide space for community relations to be developed by the neighbors, engendering higher quality of social urban life. However, there’s still much to be done in order to make these spaces functional, with confortable ambiance and stimulating for it’s diverse users. The main goal of this chapter is to present design guidelines for the surroundings of Multifamily Social Housings, based on Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) of the surroundings of two Social Housing apartment complexes in Vitória, capital city of the state of Espírito Santo, Brasil. First step was to make a bibliographic review on national and international literature regarding the subject. The POE used semistructured interviews, site observation and visual preference assess. The chapter describes the users’ perceptions, their preferences, the spaces uses, and stabilish relations with the guidelines found in the literature, to evaluate their applicability to the local situation. Hopefully this studies will provide subsidy for future Social Housing projects. Key words: Post-occupancy evaluation; design guidelines; social housing surroundings. *Previews of this chapter were published as articles in the congressional anals of ENCAC (XII Encontro Nacional e VIII Encontro Latinoamericano de Conforto no Ambiente Construído) in the 2013 edition, and of ELECS (Encontro Latinoamericano de Edificações e Comunidades Sustentáveis) in the 2013 edition.

LANDART program

The one week workshop aimed for students to create landart site oriented interventions.

OIL PAINTING design proposal I planned for the creation of a small mound covered by the same covering material of the square’s ground, by the side of a bus stop in Moricz Zsigmund square, Budapest, HU. The new topography is a support for the always busy bus stop. It also stands for a non angular shape that contrasts with the very rigiz and straight lines of the surroundings and of Budapest’s daily life.

about

Yet an amateur, but very passionate about it, painting has been my hobbie for one year now. As theme’s I’ve been looking forward to work on portraits, animals, urban landscapes, daily life situations, surrealistic landscapes and contexts.
