10 Blissful Days in SouthernItaly

A holiday in Puglia is a refreshingly low-key affair, where highlights of a trip may include visiting sleepy hilltop villages, lounging by the sea at a stylish beach club or enjoying an olive oil tasting at a local masseria (traditional fortified farmhouse). This itinerary will take travelers from art-filled Lecce, famed for its baroque architecture, to Bari, Puglia’s gritty but fascinating industrial port city. With Lecce as your base, you’ll take day trips to the southernmost point in Puglia, then move north to relax on Adriatic beaches, stay overnight in charming Ostuni and explore the ancient village of Alberobello, recognized by UNESCO for its mortarless houses, called trulli.

Opposite: Polignano a Mare

LECCE

Puglia is best explored by car; you can arrange a driver through our Travel Office (dealing with Italian traffic isn’t necessarily conducive to relaxation).

STAY From Rome, you can fly directly to the small airport in Brindisi, about halfway down the “heel” of Italy. From there, it’s a short drive to the baroque city of Lecce, Puglia’s crown jewel. Less than an hour from the airport, La Fiermontina Palazzo Bozzi Corso stands behind an unmarked door on a narrow street in the heart of the city. Check into one of the hotel’s Deluxe Suites, named for the owners’ illustrious friends and family.

DINE Reserve a table at Primo, a sophisticated one-star restaurant in a minimalist setting offering a tasting menu highlighting the region’s fresh produce and specialties, like tomatoes, eggplant and burrata, along with fine Pugliese wines from small-scale producers. The small towns and countryside surrounding the city are also home to restaurants that merit making a special trip. Bros’ Trattoria, helmed by the chefs behind the Michelin-starred Bros’, serves simple and comforting dishes in a romantic farm setting. For lunch by the sea, Lo Scalo has tables perched above a rocky coastline. Since 1968, the restaurant has served refined dishes made with fresh local fish and lobster

EXPLORE While in Lecce, give yourself at least two full days to explore the city, marveling at architectural wonders such as the Basilica of the Holy Cross and the Piazza del Duomo, where you’ll discover elaborately carved limestone façades. The city is also home to an excavated Roman amphitheater that lies beneath Piazza Sant’Oronzo, the city’s main square. Lecce’s winding streets are lined with local boutiques and restaurants. After a day of exploring, take a relaxing afternoon break at the famous Caffè Alvino, where you can sip coffee and snack on pasticciotto, an indulgent pastry filled with vanilla custard. In the evenings, return to Palazzo Bozzi Corso for apertivo hour on the roof and watch the sunset behind the towers and rooftops of the city.

GUL
AD
Clockwise from top left: Breakfast terrace and entry hall, La Fiermontina Palazzo Bozzi Corso; parmigiana with eggplant, tomatoes, basil and burnt wheat bechamel, Primo; and Basilica of the Holy Cross, Lecce

OSTUNI

ON THE WAY From Lecce, embark on day trips to explore the southern portion of Puglia. Spend an afternoon in the seaside town of Otranto or visit Santa Maria di Leuca, at the tip of the heel, for sea views from Punta Meliso. If you’re visiting from May to September, we recommend planning a beach day at one of the clubs along the Ionian Coast. For example, Porto Cesareo, less than an hour from Lecce, has shallow turquoise waters and soft sand.

STAY After exploring southern Puglia, make your way to the white city of Ostuni, perched on a hill overlooking the countryside, with views of the Adriatic Sea. Right outside the swirling pedestrian-only streets of the old town, Paragon 700 is a 15-room boutique mini-resort in a former palazzo with a spa, pool and commendable restaurant. Check into the Paragon Suite, a room with a sprawling terrace, a large sunken tub and original frescoes that practically glow in the afternoon sun.

DINE You can venture into town for dinner, but the best restaurant in Ostuni is in your hotel. Dine under the pergola or in the atelier-like dining room, where you can enjoy a multicourse dinner of exquisitely executed seafood and pasta dishes. While Ostuni sometimes gets overrun with tourists during the day, in the afternoon the city becomes quiet again. Climb the narrow pedestrian streets until you reach Bar Perso, where you can settle in for a Negroni or an Aperol spritz as you watch the sky turn cotton-candy pink at sunset. For dinner, make a reservation at cozy Casa San Giacomo, where you can dine on simple and fresh Pugliese cuisine, like orecchiette with zucchini and burrata, or a perfectly grilled steak.

EXPLORE Take advantage of Paragon 700’s prime location to do a bit of exploring. Our Travel Office can arrange for a guide to pick you up in the morning and take you on a tour of the surrounding countryside. Start off in the baroque village of Martina Franca before stopping for lunch at a local restaurant in Locorotondo, a charming hilltop village with views of the Itria Valley. In the afternoon, you’ll visit Alberobello. Your guide will lead you through the ancient city known for its more than 1,600 trulli, hobbit-like structures with conical roofs built without mortar so they could be easily disassembled to avoid paying taxes. If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, the Travel Office can arrange hiking, biking and self-driving tours throughout the valley. For the ultimate Italian experience, you can hop into a vintage Fiat 500 for a tour of Pugliese farms and other food producers to put together a picnic. Back at Paragon 700, indulge in a treatment at the cool subterranean spa, located in an old cistern under the hotel.

Opposite: Porto Cesareo. This page, from top: Lounge Bar 700, Paragon 700; fresh tagliolino at Casa San Giacomo; and a Fiat in Alberobello

3 NIGHTS

SAVELLETRI DI FASANO

STAY After a few days in the countryside, it’s time to visit Puglia’s Adriatic coast and enjoy one of the chicest hotels in the region. Check into Rocco Forte’s Masseria Torre Maizza, a low-key yet luxurious 40-room resort situated in a former olive plantation.

DINE For lunch, take a day trip to Polignano a Mare, a cinematic village on a rocky cliff overlooking the sea. The Travel Office can book a table at the famous Grotta Palazzese, a restaurant in a dramatic cave. Reserve far in advance for a table next to the sea, where you can spot swimmers and kayakers while you dine on a tasting menu of delicacies like lobster, truffles and caviar. Spend your evenings at the hotel, enjoying cocktails at the bar

All photos: Rocco Forte’s Masseria Torre Maizza

before moving on to the elegant but homey dining room, where you can choose from the many traditional Pugliese menu items.

EXPLORE Visit the stylish Lido Bambù, the Masseria Torre Maizza’s beach club just a short drive from the property, and dine at the seafood-focused restaurant there. Or visit one of the local swimming spots along the coast, like Lama Monachile, the tiny beach nestled between two cliffs in Polignano a Mare, or the grottoes between Lido Bambù and Monopoli. Keep in mind that the beach is free to visit and has no services, so you’ll need to bring your own towel (and perhaps water shoes to manage the rocky shore). If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, you can embark on a food tour of Bari’s old town, a once-rough neighborhood that’s become a tourist hot spot in recent years. Sample street foods like sgagliozze (deep-fried polenta squares), or sharpen your culinary skills at a pasta-making class. On your last day, ideally leave room in the schedule for one last dip in the sea before flying back to Rome from Bari. AH

Jolin’s travel tips

STAY AWHILE

A couple of days just isn’t enough to experience Puglia. Plan on at least a week but two weeks is better. You will want to sit back and relax; we can hire a driver for you.

WHEN TO VISIT

To avoid the crowds, shoulder season is the best — April, May and October.

WHEN TO PLAN

It is best to book a year in advance in order to secure the best accommodations and guides.

BEFORE YOU GO

Plan to stay at a few different locations, as Puglia is a long region and it takes five hours to travel from the northern point to the southern point. Learn the basics of the Italian language especially, if you are in the small towns and countryside.

WHAT TO PACK

Always dress for the season, and make sure you have a good pair of walking shoes, a swimsuit and an umbrella because there’s always an adventure waiting.

WHAT TO BRING HOME

A bottle of your favorite Pugliese wine and olive oil.

Fun facts

 Puglia is sunny 300 days out of the year.

 Griko is the regional dialect of Salento and bears a closer resemblance to modern Greek than to Italian.

BHUTAN

TwoIncredible Weeks

This little country tops many travelers’ bucket lists, and with good reason. The famously traditional Himalayan kingdom between Tibet and India packs an astonishing amount of beauty into an area less than half the size of South Carolina.

Bhutan’s landscape of rhododendron-filled forests, terraced fields, ornately embellished farmhouses and precariously perched monasteries remains almost entirely unspoiled. Its culture has yet to succumb to internationalization. And not least important for Andrew Harper members, several extraordinary hideaways have opened in recent years, breaking Aman’s long monopoly.

Opposite: Five Nectars Bar, Pemako Punakha

CHINA

THIMPHU P ARO

BHUTAN

NOTE: If you’re already headed to India, Thailand or Nepal, you can easily add a few nights — even just two in Thimphu and two in Paro — and see some stupendous sites. But the more time you can spend in Bhutan, the better. Each valley has a different and compelling character, and it’s hard to tire of the magnificent scenery, delicious food, plush accommodations and friendly, attentive service. Don’t let the complicated logistics of exploring Bhutan daunt you. With the help of our Travel Office, the organization and paperwork become quite easy. In addition to an editor (read the August 2024 Hideaway Report ), one of our advisors was there earlier this year (see page 52).

2 NIGHTS

PARO

STAY  Most international flights arrive in Paro quite early in the day. Meet your guide and driver, who will accompany you for your entire itinerary (a guide and driver are required by law). Transfer to your hotel, Como Uma Paro. A 10-minute drive from Bhutan’s international airport, this 29-room property is close to the attractions and shops of Paro town. From its forested hillside, the traditionally designed main building contains an appealing boutique, a bar-lounge and a spa with an indoor pool and a broad treatment menu, including Ayurvedic options. Some rooms and suites in the main building have valley views but simple décor, whereas standalone villas are surrounded by trees but offer more character (as well as dedicated massage rooms and woodstoves).

DINE  The Bukhari restaurant is one of the best hotel restaurants in the country. Meals including ginger-spiked congee with eggs at breakfast, al dente buckwheat noodles with seasonal vegetables and chiles at lunch, and Bhutanese specialties at dinner (like fiddlehead fern in cheese sauce and air-dried pork belly with radish and chiles) are superb. Have

1your travel advisor arrange for you to have dinner at the hotel with a former member of parliament or the director of the National Museum of Bhutan (depending on availability).

EXPLORE  Hike from the hotel grounds to the Zuri Dzong, a watchtower perched over the valley, and then down to the elaborately decorated dzong (fortress-monastery) of Paro. Alternatively, head into the town of Paro itself and have a look at the craft shops lining the old main street. They’re relatively touristy, but they will give you an idea of some of the souvenirs you may want to purchase later.

In the afternoon, have your butler arrange an archery lesson on the range at the hotel archery is Bhutan’s national sport and perhaps enjoy an Ayurvedic spa treatment or hot-stone bath. The latter is a traditional and uniquely Bhutanese experience, involving fire-heated river rocks placed in a bath infused with fragrant artemisia. The locals claim that the minerals from the rocks impart health benefits, but whether they do or not, the baths are wonderfully relaxing experiences.

Above: One Bedroom Villa and Bhutanese thali at Bhukari restaurant, COMO Uma Paro. Left: Nyamai Zam, a traditional bridge that spans the Paro Chhu River

PUNAKHA

ON THE WAY  Break up the scenically spectacular, if very winding, 3.5-hour drive from Paro to Punakha with a stop at the high Dochula Pass, marked by 108 chorten (stupas). They’re adjacent to a large parking lot, but numerous spots nearby offer fine views of the chortens and, in clear weather, distant Himalayan peaks. The café here is a good place to stop for ginger tea or some momos (dumplings). Your guide can also recommend other places for snacks or lunch. Farther on, walk through terraced farm fields up to the Chimi Lhakhang, a temple renowned for its fertility powers. Art galleries and gift shops in the town below sell colorfully (and often hilariously) painted wooden phalluses, as well as pretty mandalas and other artworks.

STAY  The Punakha Valley is the lowest-elevation (and therefore warmest) destination in this itinerary. Check into &Beyond Punakha River Lodge, which has eight stand-alone accommodations near the bottom of the river, most of which offer wonderful views of the distant Gasa Mountains.

DINE  Staff are adept at creating memorable moments. One day, &Beyond may erect a temporary riverside bar and chairs around a fire pit, making for a much more convivial cocktail hour. Another night, the staff may set up tables in a grove illuminated by candles, strings of lights and a bonfire for a romantic dinner outside.

EXPLORE  Take a day to explore the Punakha Valley, visiting its large and striking dzong and hiking up to the panoramic Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, try some (actually rather gentle) whitewater rafting. Back at your hotel, you can relax by its small infinity pool, have a spa treatment or hot-stone bath, take a well-executed yoga class and/or walk to its pedestrian suspension bridge.

Above: Chorten at Dochula Pass Right: Outdoor dining, &Beyond Punakha River Lodge

GANGTEY

STAY  Drive a total of about three hours from Punakha to the town of Gangtey, set above the Phobjikha Valley. Check into Gangtey Lodge, a short walk outside town, or Amankora, in the countryside above the valley

DINE  The engaging chef at Gangtey Lodge incorporates local ingredients whenever possible, including foraged items like white bashika flowers. Simple presentations emphasize health, but the food never fails to be delicious.

EXPLORE  At the base of the village is the trailhead of the Gangtey-Phobjikha Nature Trail, an easy hike that’s

mostly downhill or flat. It affords fine views of the valley’s center, a green, treeless wetland where black-necked cranes make their home between late October and February. Your guide can arrange a picnic on the valley floor before a quick visit of the Black-Necked Crane Center. There, you can see injured cranes recovering in captivity and an interesting film about the beautiful birds. Visit the large Gangtey Monastery at the top of the village, stopping perhaps in one or two of the art galleries below it.

Consider having a bath in your room the tubs at Gangtey Lodge have extraordinary views, and the staff will infuse

the water with oils and herbs (hot-stone baths are also available). You might have a bike ride around the rim of the valley. And we highly recommend pausing for afternoon tea on the scenic terrace, enjoyed while wrapped in blankets and warmed by hot-water bottles.

In the evening, it’s worthwhile to visit the shedra (Buddhist university) for a meditation class and/or to watch evening prayers in the fantastically ornate temple.

Opposite: Gangtey Lodge. This page, from top: In-room massage and walk, Gangtey Lodge; yak grazing near the Gangtey-Phobjikha Nature Trail

PUNAKHA

STAY  Return to Punakha, stopping to visit the dzong or Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten if you missed one of them before. Check into either Six Senses Punakha, which occupies a panoramic perch above the valley and has large, rather minimalist rooms, or Pemako Punakha, Bhutan’s most lavish resort, with 21 extravagantly decorated stand-alone accommodations. These large tented suites, complete with broad terraces and infinity pools big enough for laps, can even serve as self-contained mini-resorts.

DINE  At Six Senses, enjoy the view during alfresco breakfasts of local dishes like momos and eggs with red rice, chile paste and spinach. Dinners inside the warmly lit restaurant feature dishes such as roasted eggplant with crunchy puffed rice or cured egg yolk and miso, as well as air-dried yak in chile-cheese sauce. At Pemako, the main restaurant serves a range of cuisines, whereas the atmospheric Alchemy House, situated in a converted farmhouse, focuses on Bhutanese delicacies.

EXPLORE  Take time to just relax and enjoy your accommodations and the numerous amenities of your hotel. After days of hiking and driving, this will be a welcome break.

Below: Luxury tented suite, Pemako Punakha
Right: Flying Farmhouse over pool, Six Senses Punakha

THIMPHU

ON THE WAY  Depart Punakha and drive about 2.5 hours back west to Bhutan’s diminutive capital, Thimphu. Stop at the towering Buddha Dordenma Statue, large enough to contain a temple in its base, and have a look at the immense Memorial Chorten.

STAY  Check into either Amankora Thimphu Lodge, in the countryside north of town, or Pemako Thimphu, right in the heart of the city.

DINE  At Pemako, the soaring Thongsel restaurant serves admirable renditions of Indian, Western and local dishes, and its jewel box of a Bhutanese restaurant, Chig Ja Gye, offers a beautifully presented tasting menu.

EXPLORE  Thimphu has a stretch of craft stalls on the main street near the Pemako hotel, and they’re convenient places to pick up inexpensive but interesting small gifts to bring home. Just past the north end of the stalls, the gift shop of the Royal Textile Academy has more-upscale temptations, including wonderful handwoven silk scarves. If watching artisans at work is of interest, stop in the Zorig Chusum, a national school in Thimphu where students learn painting, sculpture, metalwork and various other traditional crafts. You might also stop at the main post office, which can print up a set of stamps with your photo on them (bring a flash drive, or they can use a photo on your phone). Make a day trip to the Tango Monastery, perched on a clifftop north of Thimphu. The hike up is short but involves numerous switchbacks. The magnificently picturesque setting of the seemingly impregnable monastery makes the hike well worth the effort.

PARO

STAY  Depart the capital and drive about 90 minutes to your final stop, Amankora Paro Lodge. Designed by famed architect Kerry Hill, the property displays a refined synthesis of tradition and modernity, with expanses of natural wood and stone that create a serene and elegant design aesthetic.

DINE  Menus feature Bhutanese, Indian and Continental cuisine, prepared with homegrown produce. The Travel Office can also arrange a private cooking demonstration with one of the hotel chefs.

EXPLORE  Paro is the base for the hike up to the famous Tiger’s Nest monastery. Leave early to take advantage of the cool morning air. It’s only 3 miles one way, but the hike is uphill and fairly steep for most of the route. A café halfway up makes a great place to rest with tea or a snack while taking in the sensational view from its terrace. The main cliffside monastery and the outbuildings around it look as if they’re straight out of a fairy tale. This extraordinary combination of architecture and landscape is on par with classic bucket-list sites like Machu Picchu and Angkor Wat, but here, crowds

are rarely a problem. Even if you hike only up to the café, the panorama will be unforgettable, but if you continue, you’ll get to see the most iconic views of the monastery complex and tour some of the temples inside. Return to Amankora Paro in the midafternoon. Relax, perhaps have one more hot-stone bath (you’ve earned it!) and pack for departure.  AH

WHAT

TO BRING HOME

Bhutan is abundant with local artisans. Intend on returning with full luggage! My favorite locally made items are baby yak wool scarves, traditional paintings, tsholing masks and the vibrant tshoglhams traditional footwear.

STAY  After flying from the United States to San José, the capital of Costa Rica, connect onto a 50-minute domestic flight to Puerto Jiménez. There, you will be picked up and escorted on a 45-minute road transfer to your hotel, Lapa Rios Lodge. Popular with Harper members, Lapa Rios is located in an isolated corner of the 35-mile-long Osa Peninsula, in the southwest of Costa Rica, close to its border with Panama. Founded by American conservationists Karen and John Lewis, the resort is set on a 1,000-acre reserve, close to Corcovado National Park, an enclave that is, according to National Geographic, “the most biologically intense place on Earth.” The property is named for the lapa, or scarlet macaw, flocks of which can sometimes be seen streaming through the sky like rivers (ríos). Over 300 bird species have been recorded here, including the harpy eagle, the largest raptor of the Americas. Of the 17 accommodations at Lapa Rios, the villas, featuring wraparound decks, plunge pools and living areas with daybeds, are especially well-suited for families.

DINE  Throughout your stay, enjoy exquisite meals featuring local ingredients at the outdoor ocean-view Brisa Azul Restaurant.

EXPLORE  Embark on a rainforest hike with one of the resort’s naturalist guides. In addition to myriad birds, the forest is home to numerous mammals, such as howler and spider monkeys, kinkajous, two- and three-toed sloths, bats, agoutis, peccaries, anteaters and armadillos. Lapa Rios also offers several marine adventures. Cruise the Golfo Dulce in search of dolphins and whales, or go sea kayaking along the coastal mangroves. Relax in the wellness center, where massages, body treatments and yoga classes are available, or simply spend your days on your private deck, gazing at the sublime view.

PÉREZ ZELEDÓN

STAY  From Lapa Rios Lodge, it is a scenic four-hour trip over the mountains to Hacienda AltaGracia. Managed by the distinguished Auberge Resorts Collection, this luxurious retreat is set on a 150-acre highland estate surrounded by tropical gardens and rainforest. The 50 plush guest accommodations are divided among stylish one- and twobedroom Casitas, all with large seating areas and patios.

DINE  In the evening, enjoy dinner at Grano, the resort’s chic main restaurant, which serves a menu of Costa Rican and Latin American cuisine. Cienfuegos, the second on-property dining option, offers a lively culinary experience inspired by rodeo and Korean barbecue.

EXPLORE  At AltaGracia, the menu of activities is so comprehensive that guests are spoiled for choice. Ballena Marine National Park, home to humpback whales and several types of dolphins, is 90 minutes away. Guests can also experience foraging excursions and coffee-farm tours. The more adventurous can try ziplining. Personalized journeys by light aircraft from the resort’s private landing strip enable guests to enjoy day trips to both the Pacific and Caribbean coastlines. Enjoy a guided hike along the property’s miles of trails. The birding here is exceptional. At the resort’s lavish stables, a team of caballistas cares for more than 40 horses. Go for a trail ride through the foothills of the splendid Talamanca Mountains.

Relax at the Well, the resort’s 20,000-square-foot spa, which offers an indoor pool, daily workout sessions and separate outdoor pools for families and adults. One signature treatment, Hierbas y Flores, uses local herbs and flowers in a chakra-balancing massage. Therapies are augmented by a heated tepidarium, vitality and heated jet pools, and an aromatherapy steam room.

2 NIGHTS

LA FORTUNA 3

STAY  Transfer to the airport and take a 30-minute flight back to San José. There, you will be met by a chauffeur-guide for the three-hour drive to Nayara Tented Camp, located in the highlands of northern Costa Rica, near the town of La Fortuna. Situated beneath the dramatic Arenal Volcano, an imposing 5,437-foot cone whose green slopes are extensively scarred by the lava from recent eruptions, this imaginative and stylish hideaway is set within the sizable Nayara resort complex. The original resort, Nayara Gardens, was later joined by adults-only Nayara Springs. At the Tented Camp, 35 lavish tented lodgings feature king beds draped with mosquito netting, along with hardwood floors and outdoor showers screened by bamboo walls. Spacious terraces offer plunge pools fed with hot-spring water.

DINE  While Mediterranean cuisine can be enjoyed at Ayla, the Tented Camp’s newly added restaurant, guests have signing privileges at any of the dining venues and bars in the Nayara complex. Amor Loco, the fine-dining restaurant at Nayara Springs, is a short drive by golf cart. Other restaurants include Mis Amores, for Italian dishes, and Asia Luna, for pan-Asian cuisine.

EXPLORE  In the morning, go on a private bird-watching tour with a naturalist guide. The route features half a dozen hanging bridges, each 200 or 300 feet long, suspended high in the forest canopy. In the afternoon, either trek through the lava fields on the slopes of the Arenal Volcano or take a kayaking trip on the nearby lake. On returning to the resort, relax in one of the property’s six natural spring-fed pools, each a different temperature, that cascade down the hillside, or enjoy a treatment at the new spa.

TENORIO VOLCANO

STAY  Two hours away by car, Origins lodge is set on the northern slopes of 6,286-foot Tenorio Volcano and surrounded by a national park. This remote and exceptionally tranquil property appeals chiefly to those who are looking for an otherworldly enclave of calm. From its open-sided main lodge building, an unforgettable panorama extends across a verdant landscape to the glinting shoreline of Lake Nicaragua. The six cottages come with handcrafted beds, steeply pitched wooden roofs and well-appointed baths. Private hot tubs, set on scenic decks, provide glorious panoramic views. There is also a three-bedroom villa augmented by a kitchen and a private Jacuzzi.

DINE  The open-plan dining area of El Salto has a large wine wall and extends into an open kitchen. There, French chef Jean-Luc L’Hourre presents sophisticated regional and seasonal cuisine.

EXPLORE  Activities at Origins include horseback riding and guided hikes through the national park, which is famous for the brilliant turquoise waters of the Rio Celeste. And a two-hour drive away, the wetlands of the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge spread out in a tangled expanse of marshes, reed islands and sinuous channels. The ecosystem is fed by the Frío River, which during the rainy season (May to October) overflows its banks to form the Caño Negro Lagoon, which is located directly beneath the flyway for migrant North and South American birds. Vast flocks of waterfowl, along with storks, spoonbills, ibis, anhingas and cormorants, arrive to overwinter at the beginning of the dry season each December. In the evenings, take a guided night walk through the grounds to look for nocturnal mammals, lizards and insects.

PAPAGAYO PENINSULA

STAY  From Origins, it is a 2.5-hour drive to the Pacific coast of Guanacaste province, where, in contrast to the volcanic highlands, the weather is consistently dry and sunny (especially from December to May). The family-friendly 181-room Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo overlooks two pristine beaches backed by tropical forest. Lodgings feature balconies or terraces, rattan and bamboo furnishings, and local artwork. Spacious Canopy Suites, a steep climb or complimentary shuttle from the main resort, offer panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the jungle canopy.

DINE  Dining options include lively Añejo for Latin American cuisine, Pesce for seafood-oriented Italian fare and Nemare, a contemporary steakhouse. Throughout the

property, there are other more-casual spots, including a beach club, a rum bar and Palapita, the restaurant at the tennis center serving Costa Rican street food and local beers.

EXPLORE  The resort offers a panoply of amenities you won’t find anywhere else in Costa Rica, including a scenic seaside Arnold Palmer-designed 18-hole golf course, tennis and pickleball courts, a fitness center with group classes, a beach club and a kids’ camp. At the breathtaking spa, indulge in a locally inspired treatment, such as a mask made with clay from the Arenal Volcano or a cacao ritual and massage. Beyond the resort, deep-sea fishing, scuba diving and catamaran sailing excursions can be arranged.

COLORADO A Winter Wonderland of Options

Colorado contains some of the most inspiring landscapes in North America, with the San Juan Range alone having 13 peaks that are more than 14,000 feet high. On the following pages, you will discover winter havens, from the wild country in the extreme southwest of the state; to the glamorous resort town of Telluride, enclosed in a dramatic box canyon; to Crested Butte, an atmospheric fragment of the Old West; to the posh resorts of Aspen and Vail. During the day, you’ll experience some of the best skiing and winter recreation in the country, while in the evening you’ll relax in cozy mountain splendor.

Opposite: Telluride Helitrax flys over skiers in Upper Bear Creek Basin, an excursion from Dunton Hot Springs

STAY Fly to Durango and pick up your rental car. Drive for two hours (80 miles) through the stunning scenery of southwestern Colorado to Dunton Hot Springs. This idiosyncratic resort was created from a former mining town and is situated in a pristine valley. The current owners bought Dunton in 1994 and set about renovating the entire town, which took seven years. Each of the 15 original handhewn wood cabins is individually decorated. For example, Vertical Log features a spectacular Native American robe hanging on a wall, while Well House comes with a woodburning stove and is augmented by a private indoor plunge pool fed by spring water.

DINE Have dinner in the Saloon, which nowadays features an open kitchen. Guests can eat at a communal table in traditional Western style or separately. Menus feature local and regional ingredients, many of which come from the resort’s own farm.

EXPLORE  Dunton, as you might expect, offers a huge variety of outdoor activities. In winter, explore the beautiful San Juan Mountains with snowshoes or crosscountry skis. More adrenaline-pumping activities include snowmobiling, ice climbing and heli tours, where you’ll soar above rugged peaks and ski down slopes of untouched powder. Back at the resort, pay a visit to the spa, which specializes in treatments using essential oils. Services include hot-stone massages and body scrubs. At the property’s natural hot springs, soak your sore muscles. The calcium bicarbonate springs range in temperature from 85 to 106 degrees and can be enjoyed inside a 19th-century bathhouse or in outdoor pools.

TELLURIDE

STAY Telluride is one of the country’s leading ski towns. Located at more than 9,500 feet, the Madeline Hotel & Residences, an Auberge Resorts Collection property, has 94 rooms and suites and 43 residential condominiums, many of which have spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. At Auberge’s Sleeping Indian Lodge, an hour from Telluride, you can have your own private resort with room for up to 20 guests, perfect for family vacations or special occasions. The expansive living room, featuring a built-in bar and sweeping views of Chimney Rock and elk grazing in the meadows, sets the stage for a memorable Western adventure.

DINE In the evening, go for dinner in the Timber Room, which features a rustic-chic cocktail bar, a huge fireplace and an outdoor terrace. The menu offers a selection of small plates such as elk tartare, halibut carpaccio and buttermilk-fried rabbit. Those whose appetites remain unassuaged by such delicacies can migrate to the “Feast” section of the menu, which includes more-challenging items such as a 32-ounce beef porterhouse and a 32-ounce chicken stuffed with black-truffle brioche.

EXPLORE Wake early to catch fresh corduroy or powder on Telluride’s 2,000 acres of skiable terrain, either on your own or with a professional guide arranged by the Travel Office. Expert skiers will want to head straight for the double-black-diamond terrain of Palmyra Peak, at more than 13,000 feet above sea level. Though it’s one of the best resorts for steep terrain, there are plenty of gentle slopes for beginners and intermediates. In the late afternoon, take a 15-minute gondola ride down to the town of Telluride, a National Historic Landmark District. Founded in 1878 as Columbia, the town was renamed in 1887 for the gold tellurium compounds that had been discovered elsewhere in Colorado. The historic district contains numerous large Victorian buildings, including the New Sheridan Hotel and the Sheridan Opera House, as well as side streets lined with clapboard houses. Later, visit the hotel’s spa, or just relax on the pool deck and enjoy the mountain panorama.

CRESTED BUTTE

STAY Crested Butte, another restored silver-mining town, known locally as “C.B.,” is set in Gunnison National Forest. At over 10,000 feet above sea level , it has only about 1,600 year-round residents. The main street, Elk Avenue, is lined with modest structures built in a style often described as Old West Victorian. Most have façades that make the place feel like a movie set. Located in the center of downtown, Eleven Scarp Ridge Lodge has five stylish guest rooms, which feature exposed wood beams, jute rugs and baths with steam showers and cast-iron soaking tubs. (There is also a children’s room with seven beds and a connecting single room.) All lodgings have in-room oxygen systems that help mitigate the effects of the high altitude.

DINE Sip a cocktail in the bar, a former saloon, with its zinc-topped counter, beamed ceiling, thick rugs and comfy sofas. The walls are hung with black-and-white photographs of the area, as well as enormous elk and moose heads. Afterward,

try one of several excellent local restaurants within walking distance. For example, Elk Ave. Prime is a fine steakhouse that features fireplaces and walls adorned, appropriately, with racks of elk antlers. The menu offers wagyu rib-eyes as well as USDA Prime filet mignon and strip steak.

EXPLORE Crested Butte is consistently ranked as one of the best ski resorts in the country. But there are plenty of adventures to be found off the slopes, too. The Travel Office can arrange for snowshoeing or snowmobile tours, as well as horse-drawn sleigh rides. Back at Eleven Scarp Ridge Lodge, enjoy the indoor saltwater pool, gym and rooftop hot tub. The lodge also owns two on-mountain chalets with dining areas and fireplaces.

ASPEN

STAY Fly into the picturesque town of Aspen. Situated at the base of Aspen Mountain, The Little Nell has 92 guest lodgings enhanced by stone-clad gas fireplaces and wellequipped baths with heated marble flooring. The hotel also features a fitness center, ski concierge, heated courtyard pool and outdoor hot tub. Alternatively, you can opt for Hotel Jerome, an 1889 hotel situated on Main Street just four blocks from the Silver Queen Gondola. The 99 guest rooms offer features such as leather sofas, plaid-upholstered burl-wood chairs, leather-clad writing desks and contemporary artwork.

DINE We recommend several restaurants in Aspen, but The Little Nell has its own culinary temptations. Element 47 serves seasonal contemporary American cuisine backed by a 20,000-bottle wine cellar. And convivial Ajax Tavern, which offers innovative bistro dishes in a cozy dining room or on a spacious patio, is the premier après-ski destination in town.

EXPLORE The area’s four ski mountains, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass, are owned and operated by Aspen Snowmass. Aspen Mountain is the oldest of the group and retains some of its vintage feel, with casual, old-school eateries and no terrain park or

beginner slopes. Snowmass, home to the Viceroy hotel, is an ideal base for families seeking ski runs suitable for a large range of skill levels. Aspen also has a thriving art scene, including several galleries that sell museum-quality works by famous artists. Our favorites are the colorful Galerie Maximillian, which specializes in works on paper; the Harvey Preston Gallery, which displays sophisticated and contemporary ceramics; and the eclectic Baldwin Gallery, with works in a range of media. Downtown, the Aspen Art Museum presents excellent rotating special exhibitions in its innovative new building.

VAIL

STAY  Vail is Colorado’s largest ski resort and offers a vast terrain and a vibrant village atmosphere. Beaver Creek, located just a short drive away, is known for luxurious amenities and family-oriented activities.

In Vail, check into Sonnenalp Hotel, one of our top-rated properties in the state. Run by the Faessler family for five generations and set in the heart of the village, this charming hotel features a Bavarian façade and traditional alpine chalet décor. The 127 rooms are relatively simple, with plain white walls, expanses of rough paneling and pairs of antlers above gas fireplaces. Amenities include a spa, a gym, a kids’ center, indoor and outdoor pools, and the Sonnenalp Club, which encompasses a golf course, a wellness studio and tennis courts.

In nearby Beaver Creek, the ski-in/ski-out Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort and Spa has accommodations with gas fireplaces, kitchenettes and balconies with mountain or village views.

DINE  Swiss Chalet offers traditional European cuisine, including fondues, while Bully Ranch presents an informal Southwestern menu. King’s Club, which offers live music Thursday to Saturday, is an excellent option for après-ski cocktails.

EXPLORE With over 5,000 skiable acres, Vail ranks as one of the premier winter sports centers in the world. The resort opened in 1962 with just three lifts, and the daily pass cost $5. Today, there are no fewer than 278 trails served by 32 lifts providing seamless access to beginner slopes and backcountry bowls alike.

Nonskiers can try fat-tire snow biking at the Nordic Center or indulge in a spa treatment. The area is also home to a handful of breweries and distilleries. A bottle from 10th Mountain Whiskey & Spirit Company in Vail Valley makes a fine souvenir.

From Vail, it’s just 35 minutes to Eagle County Regional Airport, which has nonstop flights to multiple U.S. cities in winter. If you’d prefer to end your adventure in Denver, The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa, our top-rated hotel in the city, is under two hours away. AH
