FRENCH POLYNESIA

Two Weeks in Paradise

An eight-hour flight from Los Angeles, French Polynesia consists of 118 islands sprinkled across an area of ocean almost the size of continental Europe. Of its five archipelagoes, the Society Islands are perhaps the best-known to foreigners: Bora Bora, Taha’a, Raiatea and Huahine are less than an hour by air northwest of Tahiti. Bora Bora is the embodiment of the South Pacific fantasy, and the physical beauty of its lush, mountainous landscape has to be seen to be believed. Every possible paradisiacal cliché has been written about the place, and incredibly, most of them are true. All resorts scattered around the atolls present exceptional cuisine, sophisticated spas and many captivating ways to spend your days, and the m/s Paul Gauguin offers romantic cruises in the archipelago.

2 NIGHTS

BORA BORA

STAY Begin your vacation with a stay at the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, a luxurious hotel on its own motu (islet) surrounded by coconut palms and tiare (Tahitian gardenia) trees. The 108 overwater bungalow suites offer panoramic views of the lagoon and Mount Otemanu from outdoor decks that feature dining areas, rinse showers and ladders into the water. The seven one- to three-bedroom Beachfront Villa Estates range from 2,720 square feet to 5,380 square feet and are augmented by expansive indoor and outdoor areas, private pools and a dedicated whitesand beach.

DINE Arii Moana is perfect for a casual lunch of Mediterranean-inspired seafood specialties, and the dinner-only Vaimiti serves contemporary Asian cuisine in a magnificent overwater thatched dining hut. There is also the charming Faré Hoa Beach Bar & Grill, an open-air restaurant set on the shore of the lagoon with toes-in-the-sand allure.

EXPLORE Relax at the temple-like spa that has a yoga platform and an outdoor swimming pool, play a round of tennis on one of the two grass courts or take part in an array of water activities, including snorkeling, scuba diving, windsurfing, water biking, kayaking and boating excursions. The four-hour sharkand-ray snorkeling safari is a highlight.

3 NIGHTS

TETIAROA

STAY From Bora Bora, it is a one-hour flight by private charter to the island of Tetiaroa, a former retreat for Tahitian royalty that was later owned by actor Marlon Brando. This emerald atoll is now home to The Brando, a seductive retreat comprising 35 lavish one- to three-bedroom thatched beachfront villas with outdoor tubs, high-tech media rooms and decks with plunge pools. The property includes a glamorous wellness facility, complete with a waterfall; six treatment rooms, including the magnificent bird’s nestlike couples suite; and a fitness center.

DINE There are several excellent dining venues at the resort, including Les Mutinés, featuring acclaimed chef Jean Imbert’s Polynesian-inspired dishes and fine French fare, as well as a convivial eight-seat teppanyaki restaurant and the Beachcomber café for local specialties.

EXPLORE Much of The Brando’s appeal derives from its pristine natural surroundings. The snorkeling is astonishing, and for those who would like to learn more about the environment, tours are offered to nearby research stations. Other memorable activities include traditional Polynesian dance and music lessons, weaving and pareu-dyeing classes, and cooking courses.

SOCIETY ISLANDS CRUISE

STAY French Polynesia has long beckoned visitors with sensational scenery, azure seas and rich local culture. But because of its large territory, which encompasses so many beautifully serene islands, the logistics of exploring this alluring country can be daunting. The simplest solution is to hop aboard the deluxe m/s Paul Gauguin and cruise for a week around the archipelago. The cabins on this 330-passenger ship sport a chic décor of Polynesian motifs and a tranquil color palette of sea blue, light green and pearl. All accommodations offer ocean views, and nearly 70% come with balconies.

DINE There are three onboard dining options, including a casual poolside grill and L’Etoile, an elegant white-tablecloth restaurant serving a wide-ranging menu that specializes in Polynesian delicacies.

EXPLORE The ship has a PADIcertified diving program, and there are plenty of opportunities to paddleboard, kayak, snorkel or explore white-sand beaches and lush rainforests. Included is a day at Motu Mahana, an exclusive islet retreat off the coast of Taha’a, featuring Polynesian hospitality, water sports and a barbecue feast. An excursion to a private beach on Bora Bora can be arranged. 3

PAPEETE

STAY The m/s Paul Gauguin journey begins and ends in Papeete, the capital city of Tahiti. Since most flights from the United States arrive in the middle of the night and depart early in the morning, it is often necessary to spend a night in Papeete. Spend your last two evenings in French Polynesia at the 246-room InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa, conveniently situated just a five-minute drive from the Faa’a International Airport. The overwater bungalows are especially recommended for their superior ocean views.

DINE You will not need to leave the hotel for fine meals, as the two on-site restaurants offer first-rate cuisine. Te Tiare Restaurant serves Polynesian fare, while the superb overwater Le Lotus presents gourmet French dishes.

For more lively culinary experiences, guests can enjoy Tahitian dance shows paired with a lavish buffet (themed meals regularly change) and Sunday brunches accompanied by music and dance performances.

EXPLORE This full-service resort encompasses a wellness complex, jogging trails through the estate’s tropical gardens and a PADI-certified diving center. Cultural demonstrations are offered daily, and snorkeling, kayaking, surfing and water skiing can be arranged by the staff at the on-site aquatic club.

The enchanting islands of French Polynesia never lose their charm. Whenever I return, I experience the same rush of exhilaration that I felt on my first visit back in the 1980s. AH

WHAT TO PACK French Polynesia

In such a remote destination, it’s imperative to pack thoughtfully. We asked our editors to draw on their numerous trips to the South Pacific to assemble a list of some of their favorite island-hopping essentials.

WATER, BEACH + POOL

Whether boating, snorkeling or just relaxing by the pool, you will want to be prepared and feel your best.

Easy-to-use underwater digital camera, Kodak PIXPRO WPZ2

Delos Zip-Front Rashguard from Brazilian designer Pat Bo

“Reef safe” mineral sunscreen

— Sun Bum’s water-resistant SPF 50 or Supergoop’s Play SPF 50 With Algae

Bring a rash guard like Patagonia’s RØ® UPF Hoody

Bulldog Jacquard Lacuna Swim Trunks from Orlebar Brown

DAYTIME

For activities on land like helicopter tours and off-road safaris, you’ll want to stick to a comfortable, neutral wardrobe.

Maui Jims Kawika glasses, Buck Mason’s Draped Twill Camp Shirt and Buck Mason’s Roam Water Repellent Pant

Coco Telescope

Nightflower Lace-Up Swimsuit and matching Nightflower Beach Skirt from Brazilian designer Pat Bo

Crown boater hat from Gigi Pip, Claire Rose retro shades from Aperçu and Brunello Cucinelli

EVENING

Although all of our favorite Polynesian properties embody “barefoot luxury,” it can still be nice to dress up — it gives any night more of a sense of occasion.

One-shoulder Joelle Gown from Cult Gaia

A book is always the best accessory for a beach vacation; may we suggest Brandon Presser’s “The Far Land: 200 Years of Murder, Mania and Mutiny in the South Pacific” or “Something in the Water” by Catherine Steadman. And, to pack your books and sarong for the beach, this chic woven tote from Celine.

Pair

your dress with Prada Raffia Slides (high heels aren’t ideal for walking on sandy paths or wooden boardwalks to overwater bungalows)

The overwater bungalow was created in French Polynesia. The first ones were built in the 1960s on the island of Mo’orea.

Joshua’s travel tips

WHERE TO STAY

My favorite luxury is to combine three to four nights at the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora with four to five nights at the outstanding Brando!

WHEN TO VISIT

French Polynesia is a beautiful tropical destination and can be visited year-round. For smaller crowds, look for the shoulderseason months of April-May and October-November.

WHEN TO PLAN

I recommend starting your trip-planning three or more months ahead of time. If you’re traveling over Thanksgiving or the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, plan eight months before the trip.

WHAT TO PACK

Pack lots of sunscreen, bug spray and comfortable, light clothing.

WHAT NOT TO MISS

I highly recommend a helicopter tour over the islands to get a bird’s-eye view of the different reefs and lagoons.

WHAT TO BRING HOME

Memorable items to take with you are Tahitian pearls, beautiful Polynesian woodcarvings and Tahitian Vanilla beans.

TenGlamourous Days SICILY

With a quintet of captivating resorts that provide international standards of luxury, not just adequate comfort, Sicily has emerged as a destination in its own right. Culturally, the island is astonishingly complex, with Greek temples and theaters from classical antiquity (most notably at Segesta, Agrigento, Syracuse and Taormina), Norman churches and cathedrals, and elaborate baroque architecture in the towns and cities of the Val di Noto, an area in the southeast that appears on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. The cuisine and wines are also major draws.

3 NIGHTS

PALERMO

STAY Arrive in Palermo, Sicily’s largest city. Transfer to Villa Igiea, a Rocco Forte Hotel, located 30 minutes from the airport and 15 from downtown. Take the rest of the afternoon to have lunch and relax at the hotel, which serves as both a self-contained resort and a base for exploring the fascinating city.

DINE Consider a day trip to the Anna Tasca Lanza cooking school, set on a magnificent estate in central Sicily. Its half-day program, which includes a cooking lesson and lunch with wines from the surrounding Tasca d’Almerita vineyards, makes for a memorable excursion from Palermo.

EXPLORE Take two days to tour Palermo, visiting the city in half-day chunks with a guide (spend the other half days at your leisure). Visit the open-air Ballarò street market, one of the great gastronomic spectacles of the Mediterranean. See the sensational Byzantine mosaics in the Cappella Palatina and, just outside the city, the Cathedral of Monreale as well. Connoisseurs of the macabre should also not miss the Catacombe dei Cappuccini, where more than a thousand mummified bodies stand along the walls.

EN ROUTE  Depart Palermo with a driver-guide. Stop in Cefalù to see the 12th-century Norman cathedral and its impressive mosaics and perhaps have a seaside lunch.

TAORMINA

STAY Continue on to Sicily’s most popular resort town, Taormina. Choose between the San Domenico Palace, A Four Seasons Hotel and the Grand Hotel Timeo, A Belmond Hotel. Both are exceptional, with idyllic gardens, lovely pools, outstanding restaurants, charming staff and unforgettable views. The Timeo offers a slightly greater feeling of historical continuity, whereas the San Domenico now stands at the pinnacle of contemporary hotel design.

DINE Enjoy fine dining with a view at La Capinera, a Michelin-starred seaside eatery by chef Pietro D’Agostino that features artful Sicilian specialties.

EXPLORE

The history of Taormina dates back well over two millennia before its recent star turn in “The White Lotus.” Its magnificent ancient Greek theater is still used as the venue for an annual arts festival. The old town sprawls across a rocky outcrop 800 feet above the sea, and it is this elevation that grants mesmerizing views of Europe’s most active volcano, 11,014-foot Mount Etna. Perhaps visit a winery or two on the slopes, where vineyards produce arresting wines expressive of the unique terroir.

EN ROUTE  Head south from Taormina to the ancient Greek city of Syracuse (Siracusa to the locals). Visit the splendid Greek theater and the nearby Roman-era amphitheater. Head from there to the city’s old baroque center, the island of Ortygia, before continuing south to the Val di Noto.

STAY The entry on UNESCO’s World Heritage list describes this region as “representing the culmination and final flowering of baroque art in Europe.”

Today, Noto itself remains a strikingly homogeneous 18th-century city, built from a distinctive honey-colored limestone. Check into Il San Corrado di Noto, a masseria (fortified farmhouse) surrounded by a landscape of timeless rural serenity.

CAFFÈ SICILIA IL SAN CORRADO DI NOTO 34   TRAVELER ISSUE NO. 1 / 2024
3 NIGHTS VAL DI NOTO 3

DINE Fans of the Netflix series “Chef’s Table” may recall an episode set in Noto, featuring fourth-generation pastry chef Corrado Assenza and his renowned Caffè Sicilia.

EXPLORE Il San Corrado provides a fine base for exploring historic towns such as Modica, Ragusa, Syracuse and of course Noto itself. But leave plenty of time to enjoy the resort, taking advantage of its spa and gym, impressive library, tennis courts and magnificent pools. It’s the embodiment of a refined rural hideaway.

EXTEND YOUR JOURNEY Consider continuing your trip to explore the unspoiled Aeolian Islands off the coast of Sicily. Hotel Signum, our top recommended property in the islands, is a family-owned hotel in the village of Malfa with a Michelin-starred restaurant and a sophisticated spa. AH

AUDE-LINE HAXHI

Fun fact

Arancini, a popular Sicilian street food, are fried risotto croquettes. In eastern Sicily, they have a conical shape inspired by Mount Etna. My first, and by far my favorite, arancini was at Tenuta di Fessina, a winery on Mount Etna, where we can arrange a wine tasting for you.

Aude-line’s travel tips

WHEN TO VISIT

Midspring or midfall. The water is usually warmer in the fall.

WHEN TO PLAN

The earlier the better. Even nine months to a year ahead, planning and finding availability in high season becomes challenging.

GETTING AROUND

Self-driving is possible, but I like to recommend having a private driver to avoid the stress of driving on narrow roads.

ITINERARY ADVICE

I would start in Palermo and end the itinerary in Taormina (flying out of Catania). I love the scenery of Taormina so much; it’s a very special place. I like for members, when possible, to end their Sicilian journey there or at the Il San Corrado di Noto.

WHAT NOT TO MISS

When driving from Palermo to Taormina, along with Cefalù, I would also suggest a medieval stop at Castelbuono, a picturesque town nestled in the Madonie Mountains!

WHAT TO BRING HOME

I would recommend keeping space in your luggage or having spare bags for all the treats you may bring back, from excellent wine and yummy food (pasta, olive oil, truffle products or pistachio limoncello) to handmade decorative items such as ceramics, carpets or even accessories made out of volcanic stones!

DINE While Bangkok may be famous for its night markets and street-food stalls, it’s also home to incredible contemporary Thai restaurants like the Michelin-starred Nahm, where you can dine on dishes such as grilled banana leaf filled with red curry-marinated blue swimmer crab, prawn and red grouper.

EXPLORE Spend two full days discovering this fascinating city, from bustling markets to majestic temples. Take a private, guided cruise along the Chao Phraya River to admire the golden palaces and temples dotting the city skyline. The highlight of this journey is the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew), the most revered shrine in the Kingdom. Other stops include a visit to the Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho), one of Bangkok’s oldest and largest temples. Continue your tour through the heart of the city, past towering skyscrapers and the elegant Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun).

Along the way, stop for lunch at Baan Khanitha, an excellent traditional restaurant serving spectacular curries and seafood dishes made with ingredients

sourced from the restaurant’s own organic farm. Sample a quieter side of the city in Koh Kret, an island community in the northern suburbs. Explore the island by bicycle or on foot; visit Koh Kret’s temples, the Tha-it mosque, pottery shops and colorful neighborhoods. The island is well known for its variety of special Thai sweets, and the rural landscape makes for a picturesque up-country-style experience.

Back at your hotel, book a traditional Thai massage to help recover from any jet lag.

ANGKOR WAT

STAY From Bangkok, it’s an easy one-hour direct flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia, where you’ll spend two days exploring Angkor Wat, the largest temple complex in the world. Siem Reap teems with luxurious hideaways, including Amansara, built on the grounds of a former royal guesthouse. Other favorites in the city include the Park Hyatt Siem Reap, a luxurious art deco landmark designed by Bill Bensley, and Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang, a distinctive 20-acre property designed to look like a traditional Cambodian village.

DINE The Travel Office can arrange a culinary tour of Siem Reap, where a guide will take you in a tuk-tuk to visit food markets and street-food stalls to sample local delicacies like Muscovy duck soup, made with a rich broth and fresh vegetables, or durian, the coveted and famously smelly fruit.

EXPLORE Before sunrise each day, your guide will pick you up for the short ride to the ruins, where you’ll spend the early morning touring the UNESCOrecognized archaeological complex, with an air-conditioned car to shuttle you between sites. Among the highlights are the faces carved into Bayon Temple and the live trees growing from the ruins of Ta Prohm temple. During the hottest part of the day, you’ll return to your hotel to rest and relax.

LUANG PRABANG

STAY After a one-and-a-half-hour flight from Siem Reap, you’ll arrive in Luang Prabang. The city, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the spiritual heart of Laos, filled with Buddhist monasteries and temples in addition to 19th-century French townhouses. An English-speaking guide arranged by the Travel Office will meet you at the airport and bring you to your luxurious accommodations at Amantaka, housed in a collection of French Colonial mansions just a short walk from the historic district.

DETOUR  After exploring Angkor Wat, consider experiencing more of Cambodia with stays at Shinta Mani Wild, a whimsical glamping retreat in the jungle near Kirirom National Park, and Song Saa, a spectacular private-island resort off of Koh Rong.

DINE The romantic L’Eléphant serves French and Lao dishes such as wild-boar terrine or kranab pa, fish stuffed with ground pork and local herbs and grilled in a banana leaf.

EXPLORE You’ll spend two days exploring the city with your guide, visiting sites such as Wat Xieng Thong, an ornate 16th-century Buddhist temple, and the opulent Royal Palace Museum, filled with paintings and furniture from preCommunist Laos. In the evenings, don’t miss the bustling Luang Prabang night market, with stalls selling traditional crafts and street food.

If time allows, spend a few more days exploring the waterfalls and jungle hikes beyond Luang Prabang, or set out for a cruise along the Mekong River in the hotel’s private boat.

GOLDEN TRIANGLE

STAY Transfer from Amantaka to the airport for the hourlong flight to Thailand. From the Chiang Rai airport, it’s an hour-and-a-half drive to our recommended hotels along the Ruak River — either the safari-style Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle or the comfortably chic Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort.

DINE At the Four Seasons, you’ll enjoy sunset cocktails at the Burma Bar, followed by wine and canapés in the Wine Cellar before a memorable dinner at the resort’s Nong Yao restaurant, set in a thatched-roof pavilion.

EXPLORE Thailand’s famous Golden Triangle is named for its location at the confluence of the Thai, Lao and Myanmar borders, which form a geographic triangle. The area has a notorious past as the opium capital of the world. During your days here, you can bathe elephants or explore the jungle on a guided trek.

EN ROUTE  It’s a four-and-a-halfhour drive from the Golden Triangle to Chiang Mai. Along the way, you’ll stop at Chiang Rai’s White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), a surreal creation by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. The Travel

Office can also plan a detour to the jungle village of Baan Mae Kampong, situated in a mountainous area. A nearby attraction is a small waterfall with seven levels that offers spectacular views of the mountain range from the top.

CHIANG MAI

STAY In Chiang Mai, you’ll check into the delightful Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai, an enchanting oasis just 20 minutes from the city center.

DINE The Travel Office can arrange a cooking class at the traditional teak house of a local family, where you’ll enjoy a delicious home-cooked dinner of Northern Thai specialties made with ingredients from their garden.

EXPLORE On your first full day in Chiang Mai, you’ll meet your

English-speaking guide for an in-depth exploration of the city. Begin the day with a visit to the Chiang Mai Gate Market, a traditional food market, to sample typical Thai snacks. Then proceed to the riverfront Warorot Market, with stalls full of colorful flowers and pungent spices. Next, you’ll visit some of Chiang Mai’s most famous and important temples, including Wat Chiang Man, Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang, with the opportunity to meet and speak with a local monk about Buddhism and his experiences in the monastery. End the day at Chiang Mai’s most famous landmark — Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Climb the 300-step staircase or take the cable car.

Spend a day relaxing at the hotel and taking advantage of the holistic wellness experiences at the open-air spa. Or enjoy a leisurely bicycle journey along the

Ping River over quiet, narrow roads and through local fruit orchards, rice paddies and small villages to the seldom-visited ruins of Wiang Khum Kaam, which some consider to be the ancient city on which Chiang Mai was built.

3 NIGHTS PHUKET

STAY Depart Chiang Mai on a short flight to Phuket, where you’ll be greeted at the airport by your driver and transferred by private car or boat to your resort. Choose from the stunning Amanpuri, on a private peninsula on Phuket’s west coast, or the contemporary COMO Point Yamu, set on a cliff overlooking the sea on the east coast. Alternatively, you can opt for an island resort like Six Senses Yao Noi, on Koh Yao Noi in Phang Nga Bay.

DINE Those curious about the history of Phuket can embark on a walking tour through the streets of Old Phuket with an expert guide. Visit local shrines as well as traditional herbal-medicine shops and pharmacies. Enjoy a lunch or dinner of Chinese street noodles, a dish brought here by Hokkien immigrants in the 19th century.

And, of course, dining at the resort is an exceptional experience. Amanpuri’s many restaurants take guests on a gastronomic journey around the world, delving into the culinary traditions of Thailand, Japan, Italy and the Mediterranean against the stunning backdrop of the Phuket coast. COMO Point Yamu offers Italian, Thai and a healthy COMO Shambhala Kitchen. Guests can also choose beach picnics,

poolside or in-suite private dinners beside a candle-lit pool. And Six Senses Yao Noi’s three restaurants pay homage to Thailand’s extensive food culture, from light lunches to wine-pairing and private Chef’s Table dinners.

EXPLORE Spend your days luxuriating in your villa’s private pool, or have the Travel Office arrange an island-hopping adventure through Phang Nga Bay, with stops at picturesque uninhabited islands and colorful coral reefs. All resorts offer boat excursions through Phang Nga Bay as well as many other water sports. And all three feature sensational spa and wellness options.

Depart for your connecting flight home from Phuket. The airport has flights to hubs in Asia and the Middle East. AH

Machu Picchu and so much more PERU

It would be understandable to assume that after seeing Machu Picchu, one might as well fly home. But Peru has myriad fascinating and stunningly scenic attractions set in widely varying environments, ranging from high-altitude valleys sculpted by centuries-old terraces to unique floating islands in otherworldly Lake Titicaca. This itinerary is a worthy template for a first-time visit to Peru, and for those who have been before, it surely holds a surprise or two.

LIMA

STAY Arrive in Lima and transfer to your hotel of choice, either Belmond’s sea-view Miraflores Park, set in a glass tower, or the art-rich boutique Hotel B, occupying a Belle Epoque mansion.

DINE One of the main reasons to travel to Lima these days is to eat; visitors often stay an extra day or two simply to dine at acclaimed venues such as Maido, where chef Mitsuharu “Micha” Tsumura takes diners on a journey through more than a dozen plates, transforming ingredients like rockfish, pork belly and even guinea pig into works of art.

EXPLORE Spend at least one day in Lima, though more would be rewarding. The city has several impressive museums, such as the MAC Lima, dedicated to Latin American contemporary art, and the Museo Larco, boasting one of the world’s largest collections of pre-Columbian art.

SACRED VALLEY

STAY Fly from Lima to Cusco and transfer by private car about 45 minutes northwest into the Sacred Valley, the heartland of the Inca. We have several recommended properties there: Explora Machu Picchu & Sacred Valley, best suited to active travelers who enjoy hiking; Sol y Luna, a colorful property with lush gardens and excellent restaurants; or Belmond’s Rio Sagrado, which offers a notably high level of service. After arriving in the late afternoon, settle in and relax, perhaps enjoying a spa treatment before dinner.

DINE

One of Peru’s most exciting restaurants is located near the Moray

terraces. Opened in 2018 by star chef Virgilio Martínez Véliz of Central, Mil is both a restaurant and a research center dedicated to preserving the rich variety of indigenous Peruvian agricultural products.

EXPLORE Spend at least two days in the Sacred Valley to explore its incredible wealth of sights. Take one day to visit the spectacular salt pans of Maras and the experimental agricultural terraces of Moray and another day to visit Ollantaytambo. A third day that includes Chinchero, with its artisan craft market and a 17th-century church built atop an Inca palace, would not be wasted.

MACHU PICCHU

DINE + EXPLORE Travel to and from this iconic ruined city aboard Belmond’s Hiram Bingham train. It takes about three and a half hours to travel between Poroy station just outside Cusco and Aguas Calientes at the base of the ruins. When not dining on a multicourse lunch, guests can enjoy live music and (included) drinks in the bar car.

STAY In order to see the city at sunrise and/or to hike Huayna Picchu (a sugarloaf mountain overlooking the site), spend the night at Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel adjacent to the ruins. Return to Cusco on the Hiram Bingham, having a gourmet dinner on board (and maybe another pisco sour or two in the convivial bar car).

CUSCO

STAY After transferring to Cusco, check into Belmond’s Palacio Nazarenas, with 55 suites in a former convent and palace. Alternatively, across the square is Inkaterra La Casona, a delightful 11-room hideaway in a thoughtfully updated mansion.

DINE Limo restaurant, known for its Peruvian fusion, is where local ingredients meet Asian inspiration. The restaurant is situated in a colonial mansion with a magnificent view of Cusco’s main square.

EXPLORE Make an excursion into the less-visited Valle del Sur, southeast of Cusco. Start at Tipón, which has a series of terraces notable for their still-functioning Inca water channels

and panoramic valley views. Nearby is Pikillaqta, a surprisingly vast Wari city destroyed (but never resettled) by the Inca. Its impressively tall ruins and oddly claustrophobic streets feel haunted to this day. Continue on to Andahuaylillas, a town known for its spectacularly colorful 16th-century church, and perhaps a bit farther to Huaro, which has a similarly elaborate church that has yet to be restored. Back in Cusco, pay a visit to the Coricancha, a former temple to the sun god and the most important religious site in the Inca Empire. A church now stands atop (and amid) the temple’s original stonework. Climb the bell tower for magnificent views of the city.

STAY Fly from Cusco to Arequipa and check into CIRQA, a contemporary hotel occupying a historic white-stone building a short walk from the Plaza de Armas, the heart of the historic center.

DINE Dinner in the hotel’s romantic restaurant is certainly a good idea, but Arequipa has no shortage of excellent dining options. Fashionable Mumis serves tasty Italian-Peruvian fusion dishes.

EXPLORE

Take a half day for a guided walking tour of Arequipa, a beautiful colonial city that rivals Cusco

in charm (but draws far fewer tourists). Start perhaps with the ornate church of La Compañía, noted for its brightly painted San Ignacio Chapel and rather Moorish-looking cloisters, now home to cafés and boutiques. Stroll through the San Camilo Market, still geared toward local shoppers, with gaudy stacks of produce and various other wares for sale. Finish in the sprawling Santa Catalina Monastery, a functioning colonial-era convent painted in saturated orange and sky-blue tones, now open to visitors. It’s surely only a matter of time before the Instagram hordes discover how photogenic it is at every turn.
