Collections Curated by Designers of Distinction Sunday, February 23 | Lots 1 - 494 Foreword by Martyn Lawrence Bullard California has played a major role in the world of interior design since its inception just over 100 years ago, offering up multiple award-winning designers onto the world’s stage who have created some of the most individual, opulent, fantastical and charismatic homes seen internationally. Along with these spectacular Interiors have come the amassing of world class collections of fine art, important period furniture and museum quality decorative antiques, often curated with the finely tuned expertise of legendary designers. This sale offers a rare glimpse into such collections and collaborations, pieces gathered from around the globe to dress some of the finest homes in the state with the discerning eye of some of the most distinguished tastemakers. One of my favorites, a legend in the industry and inspiration to my own career was Kalef Alaton. Kalef, born to a sophisticated Turkish family and educated in Paris, moved to Los Angeles in the 1970’s and became one of the most renowned interior designers in the world before his untimely death in 1989. Famed for his eclectic interiors infused with the finest quality Lot 96 antiques and objects, all curated with a connoisseur’s eye. His work spanned from private residences for the rich and famous to commercial projects like the Bel Air Hotel and the Crescent Court in Dallas, Texas. This sale offers pieces from an important Kalef interior showing the diversity and refined choices of his expert eye. The refinement of his eye however is recognized by one of my personal favorites, the magnificent, quirky wall clock with an astronomical dial (lot 85), possibly the only one existing in the world outside of a second, now in the royal collection housed in Buckingham Palace, London. A magnificent Charles II japanned cabinet on giltwood stand (lot 96), shows Kalef’s love of exotica and how he adored to mix styles. This resides in the same interior as a fine Irish William IV serving table attributed to Mack, Williams and Gibton (lot 48), with fanciful lion headed monopodia legs and a Baltic mid-19th century gilded bronze and cut-glass Neoclassical chandelier (lot 16) of the finest quality. When I first moved to Los Angeles, 28 years ago, Craig Wright was one of the Lot 85 most respected antique dealers and interior designers in the city. His store was an Aladdin’s cave of the chicest antique furniture sitting alongside masterfully executed pieces of his own design. This sale offers pieces from his personal rarefied collection including some magnificent Russian furniture. I especially love the pair of Neoclassical Karelian wood and brass inlaid commodes (lot 163), highly architecturally stylized and perfectly proportioned, also a sublime Russian writing table (lot 129) once again distinctly to Craig’s taste for proportionate Neoclassical furniture, this piece exhibits all the style and quality a collector of his caliber would own.

exemplified their work. This sale offers items from one of the company’s important commissions that exemplify their style and taste level. I particularly love the pair of Regency mahogany stools with their Roman proportions (lot 358), simple and yet so elegant. Also, a highly unusual George III japanned hall chair (lot 425) which commands you to marvel Lot 358 at its quirky shape and presence, a magnificent German early 18th century black Japanned bureau cabinet (lot 494), wonderfully alluring in style and of the highest quality. Their theatrical taste can be seen in the pair of Italian Rococo mid-18th century mirrors (lot 375) complete with full on flourishes and perfectly exaggerated scale. The company has been known for amassing great collections of objects for their clients as well, a favorite was Han and Tang dynasty pottery. Some excellent pieces are offered in this sale including two pottery models of warriors of impressive scale (lot 356). Steven Volpe, the San Francisco based AD 100 designer has built an impressive roster of clients over his 20 plus years in the business. Included in this sale are important English and European furnishings, acquired from the Lot 425 worlds most respected antique dealers, that resided in a distinguished San Francisco collector’s home Steven designed early in his career. Among my favorites are a pair of Neopolitan silvered and white painted consoles (lot 224), so marvelously Italian in their flavor and proportions. An impressive and rare tall case musical clock (lot 196) depicting chinoiserie landscapes and floral motifs is another highlight, with an astounding playable 23 tunes. Amongst the decorative objects is a beautiful Cartier circle a tourneu clock (lot 255), silver gilt mounted on Spanish brocotelle marble circa 1905, and from the artworks he curated, a singularly unusual collection of Continental royal portraits (lot 222), a dramatic decorative statement of wonderful quality and scale when seen en mass.

Lot 255

The collection from Therien epitomizes their passion for Scandinavian furniture. One cannot fail to be impressed at the scale, lines and timber used on the Danish cupboard (lot 303). From the collection curated by James Lumsden, and illustrated on the back cover of the catalog, there are four bronze works by an Olympian of modern sculptors, Robert Graham. Of the ten works by Graham in the sale, there is a most unusual silver medallion. Rarely have I seen a sale that includes so many unusual pieces, from across the decorative styles and periods that have been so well curated by some of the best interior designers in the business, both past and present. Lot 303 Interior design is the art and science of enhancing the interior of a space to be more polished and aesthetically pleasing. The furniture and objects in this sale are prime examples of the designer’s eye and talents to enhance rooms with the most beautiful and desirable of these. Andrew Jones Auctions is offering an exceptional opportunity with this sale to own pieces of exemplary quality and provenance, an ode to the talents and value of world class interior designers and their curative eye. The three vertically planted graduated circular dials including a 4 3/8 inch black enamel barometer dial with gilt Paris spade hands above a similar 9 ½ inch black and gilt time dial, above a 20 inch linen backed planisphere map of the sky illustrating the constellations, with lunar moon hand, S sidereal hand and solar sun hand riding the ecliptic rail, all visible through the 17 ¼ inch diameter eglomise panel indicating the four cardinal directions North, South, East and West, which are delineated by 15 degree incremental markers. height 68 1/2in (174cm); width 29 1/4in (74.5cm); depth 8in (20.5cm) $10,000-15,000 Provenance: with Hyde Park Antiques, New York, New York. Footnote: The Planisphere: The ecliptic path passes through all the astrological constellations and the sun follows the ecliptic path through each sign of the zodiac. This is accomplished by the solar hand riding the ecliptic rail as the sky map makes one revolution in 366 days, 23 hours 56 minutes per day, or a sidereal year, while the time movement keeps 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Lunar activity is represented by the moon hand. Sidereal time is indicated by the silvered S hand read against the églomisé twenty-four hour, Roman chapter, sidereal time dial which encloses 16 1/2 in. of visible sky map. The overall diameter of the planisphere sky map is 20 inches. A very similar clock, almost certainly by the same maker is in the collection of Her Majesty, The Queen at Buckingham Palace. See H. Cliffford Smith, The Complete History of Buckingham Palace: Its Furniture, Decoration & Treasures, London: Country Life Limited, Coronation Edition, pl. 300. Property from the Collection of Craig Wright Lots 99 – 173 I would describe my design philosophy as Classical with unpredictable counterpoints. The last few years I’ve felt compelled to simplify. I believe every room is built on the memory of rooms seen, lived in and loved in the past. I believe we’ll all continue to look to the past for inspiration. I am looking forward to interesting new ways of combining history with technological advances, creating an eclecticism which will stand the test of time. It’s all about living with beauty and helping other people live with it as well. - Craig Wright Craig Wright is a proponent of classic forms and has influenced international interior design for decades through his design studio, C.M. Wright, and his shop Quatrain. He studied art history, architecture and fine arts at USC and UCLA and in 1966 began work as an interior designer. His career took him to Europe on a quest for the finest antiques and creative inspiration. Mr. Wright’s lengthy and illustrious client list includes the likes of Michael Douglas, Dan Aykroyd, James Coburn and James Garner. His personal collection offers a wonderful mix of antique and modernist furniture, from richly upholstered seating to clean Neoclassic lines. He was one of the first decorators to embrace the stately power of Russian design as exemplified by a Russian Neoclassical Karelian birch writing table (lot 129) and a pair of Russian commodes (lot 164). Another highlight of this section is a fantastic set of thirteen Zuber wallpaper panels, Les Vues du Brésil (lot 162). Along with garden appointments, carpets, fine art, seat furniture and accessories, the section includes a wonderful collection of Neapolitan Presepe market and crèche figures and tableaus (lots 130-134).

Property from the Collection of Francis A. Martin III San Francisco, California Curated by Steven Volpe Lots 174 – 259

Francis A. Martin, III (1943-2019) was president of the former Chronicle Broadcasting Company and a great-grandson of Michael Henry de Young. Raised in Hillsborough, California, he graduated from Stanford University and served with the United States Marines in Vietnam. Mr. Martin worked for decades in broadcast news, managing operations at family-owned KRON-TV where he pioneered local programming. An enduring San Franciscan, he lived for years atop Telegraph Hill and was involved in the arts and culture of the city. Mr. Martin had a reputation for always being sharply dressed, at one time even being named one of the ten best-dressed businessmen in America. He served on the boards of The Associated Press, Metrocall Inc., and the Hibernia Bank, among numerous others. He was a member of several professional organizations and social clubs, including The Knickerbocker in New York, White’s in London, and the Pacific-Union Club and The Bohemian Club in San Francisco. The partnership of Mr. Martin and decorator Steven Volpe produced a deeply personal and beautiful home. Volpe’s time in Paris ingrained in him the understanding that the works in a space should reflect the owner in substance and taste. The Martin collection’s refined international mix of pieces, highlighting exceptional English and French antiques as well as sporting and maritime art reveal the aesthetic and spirit of the collector. The remaining property from the collection will be offered in these Rooms on 22 March 2020.

230 A fine pair of George III gilt carton-pierre and giltwood oval mirrors in the manner of John Linnell circa 1770 Each with foliate crest above a female mask, aprons centered by a standing or recumbent left facing lamb. height 55in (140cm); width 25 1/4in (64cm) $15,000-25,000 Provenance: with Jeremy, Ltd., London. Footnote: Carton-pierre, literal translation from the French - cardboard stone, was developed in the 18th century specifically to imitate wood and stone. Maker’s formulas varied, but typically included flour, chalk, sawdust, sand and plaster and bound with wax, resin, animal glues or gum arabic. The material could be moulded, bent and otherwise formed into the desired design. Preeminent makers like Gillows and John Linnell began using carton pierre in the late 1760s. The new material allowed for lacey decorative spandrels and festoons that could be made into nearly any length or shape required. These elements and the particular foliate umbrella canopy on this pair of mirrors relates to designs of William and John Linnell. The most famous example of this crest element is on the mirror supplied by Linnell to the 4th Duke of Beaufort for the State Bedroom at Badminton House, sold from the Doris Duke Collection, Christie’s New York, 3-5 June 2004, lot 442. 233 Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen (Danish/American, 1850-1921) America’s Cup, Volunteer vs. Thistle, 1887 oil on canvas signed lower right A. Jacobsen and dated 22 x 36in (56 x 91.5cm) $30,000-50,000 Provenance: with Godel & Co., New York, New York. Footnote: This work depicts the 1887 America’s Cup as desginer Edward Burgess’ defender Volunteer, captained by Henry ‘Hank’ Coleman, overtakes Scottish designer George Watson’s challenger Thistle, captained by John Barr, to win the title. The Thistle was built in secret and was even draped in tarpaulins when drydocked to conceal the lines which borrowed from American design. The mystery surrounding the Thistle was so compelling, when she docked in New York a newspaper hired a diver to go down one night to explore the secrets of her hull. When the boats were officially measured before the race, it was discovered that Thistle was 45cm over her declared length which caused an uproar and George Schuyler, a Cup donor, had to step in and agree to let Thistle race. In the second half of the 19th century yacht racing was borne as a sport. The constant advancements in design led to great pre-race anticipation. The lead up to the 1887 America’s Cup was full of excitement and much trepidation from the American side due to the secrecy of the Thistle’s construction. Huge crowds gathered for the race. The massive audience filled spectator boats. Though patrol boats fought to keep the course clear, competitors had to navigate steamboats packed with fans vying for the best views. Volunteer was the first America’s Cup yacht with an all steel frame and hull. Built in 66 days at the Pusey & Jones Shipbuilding Company in Wilmington, Delaware, her design included evolutionary improvements to the design of the Mayflower, the previous defender and champion of the America’s Cup, that gave Volunteer “an extremely sharp angle between her forefoot and the lowest line of the keel, great depth aft, and unusually long overhang and a sharp sheer [A.J. Kenealy, Yacht Races for the America’s Cup 1851-1893 (NY: The Outing Company, Limited, 1894), 108]. After the America’s Cup races, Volunteer was bought by John Malcolm Forbes and was re-rigged as a schooner in 1891. CURATED BY STEVEN VOLPE | 97

Property from a Private Beverly hills Residence Curated by hendrix Allardyce Lots 338-494 llya Hendrix and thomas Allardyce formed an enduring partnership that worked with their unique personalities and histories, blended aesthetics and respective strengths. they seamlessly integrated periods and styles to create inviting interiors. the collection from this Beverly Hills residence exemplifies the skill of Hendrix Allardyce in synthesizing components and inserting modern touches and exotic accents to arrive at a refined, embracing space. Having traveled extensively in Asia and europe, Hendrix and Allardyce mixed an international selection of european antiques such as the pair of Louis XVi style gilt bronze, tôle peinte and porphyry urns by ébéniste and bronzier Henri dasson, Paris, circa 1887 with several early chinese pottery works and ceramics, led by two large tang dynasty models of warriors (lot 356). Also featured are chinoiserie decorated pieces including an impressive German Baroque gilt and black japanned chinoiserie decorated bureau cabinet (lot 494). the decoration relates to the work of Martin schnell (1685-1740) and pieces that he had made for palaces of Augustus the strong. An italian take on this eastern inspired style is the rococo commode in the manner of Pietro Massa of Piedmont (lot 448). these elements complimented by the clean neoclassic lines of regency period selections like the brass inlaid center table (lot 360) and the concentric dining table (439) are reminiscent of the eclectic décor of Brighton Pavilion. the remaining property from this collection will be sold in these rooms on 22 March 2020.

Footnote: This pair of drawings represents two Chinese figures often featured in Japanese ink paintings associated with Zen Buddhism. Kanzan (Chinese: Hanshan) was a hermit poet of the Tang dynasty (618-906) who befriended Jittoku (Chinese: Shide), an orphan who was taken in by monks as a kitchen helper at a mountain temple. They both lived on leftover food from the temple’s kitchen. They are recognizable by their disheveled appearances. Their carfree lifestyle and hapless nature reflected the Buddhist tennants of charity and simplicity. 342 Two pairs of Anglo Chinese Brighton Pavilion style bamboo and caned armchairs 19th century height 34 3/4in (88cm); width 19 1/2in (49.5cm); depth of seat 16in (40.5cm) $1,500-2,000 Footnote: After George IV had been gifted series of Chinese wallpaper panels, he ordered Frederick Crace and Robert Jones to design a Chinese Gallery in his seaside retreat Brighton Pavilion to display it. The gallery was decorated with Chinese and Japanese artifacts as well as English and European works in the Chinoiserie style. This set the trend for fashionable eastern inspired furnishings and decoration in the 19th century.

494 An impressive South German Baroque gilt and black japanned Chinoiserie decorated bureau cabinet in the manner of Martin Schnell, possibly Dresden early 18th century and later The arched moulded cornice with later lotus blossom finials above doors enclosing a later fitted interior with drawers and spiral-twist columns, the serpentine lower section with hinged slant-front enclosing a fitted interior with central well, above three drawers on later bun feet. height 98in (249cm); width 42in (107cm); depth 22in (56cm) $20,000-30,000 Provenance: sold Christie’s New York, 30 March 1995, lot 222. Footnote: The decoration on this cabinet is an example of the Continental fashion for Chinoiserie, which dates to the 17th century, when European travelers brought back exotic art and objects from the East. The techniques used in producing Chinese and Japanese lacquerware were expensive, so European workshops devised formulas for economically producing a similar surface that came to be known as ‘japanned’. Martin Schnell (1675-1740) was born in Dresden and began his career in the famous Berlin workshop of Gerhard Dagly (1657-1715) in 1703. He returned to Dresden in 1710 to found his own firm and was subsequently appointed ‘lacquer-maker’ to Augustus the Strong. Influenced by Dagly, Schnell produced japanned works with intricate Chinoiserie scenes as on the bureau cabinet offered here. There are several pieces of furniture attributed to Martin Schnell, including a japanned cabinet on view in the collection of the Rijksmuseum (see R. Baarsen, Duitse meubelen. Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Zwolle 1998, p.47). A related table and a similar bureau cabinet attributed to Schnell at Augustus the Strong’s Palace at Pillnitz, are illustrated in H. Kreisel, Die Kunst Des Deutschen Möbels, 1970, vol. II, figs. 42 & 44.
