J

John Nelson

ohn Nelson was born in Seattle, Washington, in 1937, into a first-generation Greek family. He was the youngest of eight boys with one younger sister. John’s father died when he was six-months-old leaving his mother, who barely spoke English, to raise nine children. In his youth, John worked several jobs to help the family. He was a newspaper boy, elevator operator, and even grocery delivery boy at times. He eventually attended Menlo College in Atherton, California, to study art history. While a student at Menlo College, John went with classmates on a trip to Europe. This would begin a lifetime of travel and art appreciation that saw him return to Europe over seventy times in the following sixty-five years. Soon after his trip to Europe, John decided to strike out for Los Angeles. In Los Angeles, he worked as a bartender and a busboy before he started working for a used furniture store. During the same period, he met Robert Rounds and the two remained together as business partners and life partners for fifty years and five days until Robert’s death in 2007. John and Robert would drive to yard sales on the weekends, buy old furniture which Robert would restore, and then sell it on the side yard of the used furniture store at which John was working. They saved the proceeds from these sales until they had enough money to travel to Paris and begin buying antiques. In 1965, with a $5,000 loan from Bank of America, John and Robert started John Nelson Antiques. From its modest beginnings in the side yard of a used furniture store, John Nelson Antiques grew beyond their wildest imagination. For forty-five years, the duo traveled the globe buying antiques for the store and for their homes. The magical blend of business and pleasure gave them a life full of riches but more importantly full of friends and tales from around the world. Whether it was dinner parties in London with Princess Margaret or drinking with the waiters after hours at Café de Flore in Paris, John and Robert had a flair for enjoying life. John always stressed to his family “keep your eyes open and observe the world. There is so much to see, never stop looking”. John Nelson died on June 14, 2021.

I first met John and Robert in 2003, when I had been tasked with reopening the Furniture and Decorative Arts department for Bonhams and Butterfields in Los Angeles. My initial undertaking was to introduce myself to the army of antique dealers in Los Angeles. I received a cool reception at the first store I visited. Polite but cool. Next door was John Nelson Antiques. I braced for a similar welcome when I introduced myself to John Nelson and Robert Rounds but was pleasantly surprised with an enthusiastic greeting followed by a chat about the future and then they asked me ‘who do you know in Los Angeles?’ Just your neighbor and yourselves was the answer. ‘Well come on then’ John said as he gestured out the door. John and Robert proceeded to walk me up and down Melrose Place and Melrose Avenue introducing me, like an old mate, to the dealers at the heart of the antiques area of the city. That kindness was the start of a long friendship, which brings us to the first of several auctions, an event that I had hoped would not happen for many more years. The series of sales over the coming months will be a tribute to John’s unerring eye for quality and whimsey. The final auction will be the private collection from his home overlooking the Pacific ocean. I will miss John in many ways, his wicked sense of humor, his straightforward approach to life and his humbleness. It will not be the same, when standing on the rostrum, without him sitting at the back of the auction room, back to the wall, bidding so passionately with obvious joy in battling it out with other bidders and seeing the twinkle in his eye when he won.

Martyn Lawrence BullardMartyn Lawrence Bullard Design As a lover of antiques since I was a boy, I have always been entranced by the dealers who really know what they are doing, whose passion oozes from their shop windows, both enticing you in and wowing you with their taste and knowledge. John Nelson was a man of great taste, but above all he was a great dealer. When I first ventured into his store probably 25 years ago now, I became immediately spellbound. Much of his stock was of the best quality with provenance and pedigree far above my pay grade in those days, but I found three large mercury glass ‘witches balls’, so called because they supposedly warded off evil from their reflection, hiding in a forgotten corner. John gave me an incredible price as he was charmed and bemused by my obvious delighting in his shop, and these shiny objects became the highlight of my mantle for a good decade. Slowly but surely, I lured clients into his den of temptations, and once in all were captivated by his seemingly endless inventory of magnificent furnishings and breathtaking decorative objects. His passion and knowledge however became the real draw, leading to clients becoming fans as much as collectors. I remember Sharon Osbourne buying an impressive Amethyst crystal Belle Époque chandelier that became the center piece of the dining room I designed for her and Ozzy and from then on becoming so loyal to John she only bought her antiques from him. A studio head and his wife splurged on a rare pair of 18th century Dutch mirrors that they blamed me for convincing them to buy for months until the day I installed them, when instantly they became the pride of a client’s home and subsequently made them loyal John Nelson clients for years, adding important pieces to their collection to mark every special occasion and holiday gifting. That was the power of his eye, always refined, always quirky and always unexpected, determined to have the finest antiques stores in LA and compete amongst the best in the country. For me, as a decorator, the loss of such a wonderful dealer and inimitable character is one deeply felt. There are few dealers like John left in the world now and it is certainly a far less beautiful place without him and his great style.

Ron Collier – Ron Collier & Associates John and I grew up together in this business from different points of view but similar love of antique furniture. I couldn’t tell you what year we met but it was in the early 1960s. As his expertise in antiques and art increased, I aspired to the quality of projects compatible with his products and we have enjoyed a long professional and personal relationship. My own collection of furniture and accessories proves my conviction of the inherent value of John Nelson Antiques.

Timothy Corrigan – Timothy Corrigan Inc. Perhaps more than any other individual, John Nelson truly represented the very best of the antiques and design world in Los Angeles for decades. John Nelson Antiques was the gold standard by which others were judged. I remember my first time going into that incredible Ali Baba’s cave of splendid pieces and feeling a little in awe that so much quality was all brought together in one place…and in LA, no less! His eye was incredible and it wasn’t just for the very best, but also for those interesting and quirky pieces, that John understood could make a space feel special and interesting. Those who never experienced John Nelson Antiques certainly missed out on a great treat; it is already missed.

Jon King – I met John years and years ago when I worked at Sotheby’s. The intersection of Melrose Place and La Cienega was considered the heart of the antiques market, and a dozen galleries there became my favorite hauntsmost were considered ‘Old School’, displaying a rich eclectic mix of European furniture, decorative arts and Asian ceramics…I loved looking, examining, and listeningand John was one of the best when it came to sharing his insights and knowledge and making me feel welcome. He came to be regarded as an institution, and rightly so. His passion for the field was infectious, and his sense of aesthetics was unmatched. John will be missed- I’m sure the lights on La Cienega and Melrose Place are just a little less bright these days.

I hold him dear to my heart as he taught me so much. As a consummate Antique dealer John had a passion for buying the best of the best. I once bought some large Chinese Screens and made them into doors for my wardrobe closet. They were spectacular. His legacy will live on forever in the many homes furnished with his gorgeous furniture, decorative works and chandeliers. He will be missed in our community.

Renvy Pittman Renvy Graves Pittman Interior Design The first time I rang the bell at John Nelson Antiques on Melrose Place, I stepped into a magical world created through John’s connoisseurship and endless optimism. John was a delight. In a world of beige, he would bring home a pair of silver Rhinoceroses mounted with porphyry obelisks and casually place them on an exquisite console. John was beyond an antiquarian; he was a collector of the rare and wonderful. I am fortunate to have known him and to be able to live with a few of the beautiful things he found. I miss him and his bright smile terribly.

Lars Stensland Jr. – In the Sixties there were so many antique dealers one could not name them all, but now they seem an endangered species. John Nelson’s shop was always a top destination. Nothing gave John more pleasure than buying beautiful things. He loved the process so much, selling them was really an added bonus because it meant he could buy more, and more he did. He was a dear friend and I miss him greatly.

Philip Stites – antiques-20th-MADE Therien & Co., Inc. When Therien & Co., Inc. opened in the La Cienega Design Quarter (LCDQ), in 1989, John Nelson was one of our first visitors in the new space. Gregarious, charming and always witty, he became a welcome colleague in our small antiques dealer’s world, despite being a competitor. Not only that, over time he became a friend. And as a member of the LCDQ, a stalwart supporter of the neighborhood. The infectious laugh and humor, with his wry take on our industry was always a breath of fresh air.

Suzanne Tucker Tucker & Marks Design John Nelson was one of the premier dealers and a must stop-and-shop whenever I was in LA. His knowledge was extraordinary and his banter always enticing. Michael Taylor introduced me to John years ago and would always spot the best things in the shop. It became a game as to whether or not John was going to sell them to him or not which, of course, made you want something even more! With an extraordinary eye, John shopped the world and delivered it all to us in the most abundant and glamorous way - elegantly displayed, beautifully refined, perfectly polished and always beckoning you to leave with a newfound treasure. 182 | Andrew Jones Auctions

Craig Wright – C M Wright, Inc. John kept increasing his inventory until he had amassed one of greatest inventories of its kind in the world. I had first met John in the early 70s and visited him often as my office was just across the street from his original gallery. John was always consistent with his taste and didn’t change his focus with the current trends in decorating style. Over the years, his inventory reached a higher level of quality for which he was very proud. He particularly loved the adventure of buying. During his last buying trip to Paris, he visited his favorite resources who were most pleased to see him. I was in Paris shortly afterward and they all were encouraged by his visit at a time when the traditional antique market was slow and in state of transition. When I last visited John, he was still determined to follow his convictions. He smiled and said, “what else am I going to do?”
