Design for the Home and Garden July 26 | Lots 1 - 261 Life has changed quite a bit in 2020. As a result, we have adapted for the times to protect our staff and clients by having online exclusive sales which are smaller in quantity but more frequent which allows us to curate and refine each auction. Our wildly successful Collections Curated by Designers of Distinction in February saw interest return to quality works with important provenance. This upcoming auction offers property of comparable caliber with a different aesthetic twist. Our first Design for the Home and Garden auction of the year will be led by property from the collection of Mary and Lou Silver of Indian Wells, California which encompasses a host of genres with standout works including a spectacular oil on canvas Still life with flowers and fruit painted by a master of color and composition, Nicolai Fechin, circa 1925 (lot 258). Another fine work is a gouache on paper abstract composition by Serge Poliakoff (lot 209). The collection also offers pieces by Louis-Ernest’s Barrias Rosa Bonheur, Émile-Antoine Bourdelle, John George Brown, Claire Jeanne Roberte Colinet, Edgar Degas, George Fuller, François-Raoul Larche, Ernest Lawson, Reginald Marsh, Louis Charles Moeller, Jane Peterson, Helen Maria Turner and Emmanuel Villanis as well as a selection of animalier bronzes after Antoine Louis Bayre, Isadore Bonheur, Hippolyte Joseph Cuvelier, Pierre-Jules Mêne and Leonid Vladimirovich Pozen. The Silvers developed a love of the intricacies and subtleties of the art of Italian micro mosaics and their collection includes a spectacular panel of a peasant woman in a country landscape attributed to Luigi Tarantoni (lot 69) and an impressive table top centering St. Peter’s Square, almost certainly by Cesare Roccheggiani (lot 72). Art glass from the Silver collection includes a Dale Chihuly blown and applied glass Venetian vase, 1996 (lot 139) and two works by Murano Maestro Lino Tagliapietra, four works by Dino Rosin as well as a Marc Lalique Cactus table. The remaining art, furniture and important fine jewelry from the Collection of Mary and Lou Silver will be offered in auctions this September. English antiques and decorative arts will be led by a selection from a Northern California estate that includes a fine late 18th century George III gilt bronze and jasperware mounted fall front secretary in the manner of Thomas Sheraton (Lot 208), a Regency mahogany cellarette in the manner of Thomas Hope (Lot 88), and two early tall case clocks: a walnut example by Joseph Knibb apprentice Brounker Watts, and a floral marquetry example by Christopher Gould (lots 86 & 87). Additional clocks from this source include a sculptural Louis XVI figural mantel clock by Jean Baptiste Dutertre (lot 249) and an allegorical Empire example by Angevin, Paris (lot 248). A Thomire gilt bronze tazza (lot 233) and a pair of Louis XVI grey painted fauteuils, circa 1785, by menuisier Nicolas Delaisement (lot 255) come from the same collection. Also on offer will be a selection of fine carpets and beautiful chandeliers. Also from the Northern California estate is a selection of early British Britannia and sterling silver, including a collection of tumbler cups from London makers, as well as provincial silversmiths, a Charles II porringer, candlesticks, coffee pots, tankards and other table wares. Fine silver from the estate of Ruth Harvey features a pair of substantial Regency tea trays by Paul Storr (lots 3 & 4) and a Storr silver tea urn originally owned by Richard Alexander Oswald of Oswald Hall, Ayrshire, Scotland (lot 2). The silver offerings also include pieces by the Georg Jensen Silversmithy and a striking pair of Viennese silver-gilt figural six-light candelabra (lot 31). Additional highlights include two vintage Louis Vuitton travel trunks that belonged to Oscar winning director Orson Welles and his wife, Contessa di Gerfalco, Paola Mori from the estate of Orson Welles (Lots 33 & 34) and garden appointments as impressive as a pair of French bronze mounted iron jardinières by the Val d’Osne foundry (Lot 163), vintage Catalina tile bird panels (Lots 122-124) and a number of lots of patio furniture by Walter Lamb for Brown Jordan (lots 155-158), as well as marble sculpture and an impressive 19th century marble fountain (Lot 165). Whilst we may not be able to see you in person this time, we look forward to hearing from you. Stay safe and well. -Andrew Jones

35 Frederick Arthur Bridgman (American, 1847-1928) Portrait of a red headed woman, late 1890s oil on canvas signed lower left FA Bridgman 18 x 14in (46 x 35.5cm) $3,000-5,000 Provenance: Property from the Collection of Dr. Ben Pinsky and Terry O’Neill Pinsky. Footnote: It appears that the model is wearing a diaphanous, antique-style gown suggestive of a chiton fastened by small buttons along the arms. The surface treatment is thinly painted in terms of the attire with quick, short brushwork of the leaves and bush background in the upper right quadrant. Given also that Bridgman focused primarily on themes from antiquity beginning in the late 1890s, a time when he was also experimenting with several different paint handlings, differing especially from the tight handling from his early years of academic training.
35
From his early years in France and throughout the nineteenth-century, Bridgman loved depicting attractive women with auburn and red hair. The pose of this unidentified woman is also characteristic of Bridgman as he often posed his models with tilted heads and at least one arm angled up to their heads, emphasizing a casualness. He also depicted several women playing with their hair as this red-head is doing. We thank Dr. Ilene Susan Fort for her expertise and assistance in cataloguing this work and preparing the accompanying comments. 36 A Levantine shell, bone and silvered metal inlaid tall chest of drawers late 19th century Surmounted by a marble top, having porcelain pulls. height 52 3/4in (134cm); width 47 1/4in (120cm); depth 22 1/2in (57cm) $2,500-3,500

We would like to extend our thanks to Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel for her expert assistance in cataloguing lots 67-72 and for her scholarly essay contributions.
67 An Italian micromosaic panel of the Roman Colosseum possibly by Cesare Roccheggiani, Rome second half 19th century the panel 10 1/4 x 14 1/4in (26 x 36cm) $4,000/6,000 Provenance: With G. Petochi, Rome, 1987. Property from the Collection of Mary and Lou Silver, Indian Wells, California. Footnote: Cesare Roccheggiani (fl. 1860) hailed from a line of renowned Vatican mosaicists including Antonio Roccheggiani, who participated in the International Exhibitions of London in 1851 and Paris in 1855 and Lorenzo and Nicola Roccheggiani. He was believed to have been apprenticed to maestro Michaelangelo Barberi (1787-1867) and refined his composition skill by copying many of Barberi’s designs. Cesare Roccheggiani became the leading supplier of micromosaic works to American and North European visitors on the Grand Tour. This view of the Colosseum includes the ruins of a conical fountain called the Meta Sudans. Several other versions of the Colosseum are in the books Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, Micromosaics: The Gilbert Collection, 2000, no. 16 p. 68; no. 58 p. 117), and Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, Micromosaics: Private Collections, 2016 (no. 34, p.72). A circular example, with distinctive malachite border, featuring the same scene characteristics, bearing embossed Roccheggiani atelier inscription was sold Christie’s London, 23 February 2006, lot 135.

68 An Italian micromosaic panel of St. Peter’s Square late 19th century In a gilt bronze frame. the panel height 7in (17.5cm); width 8 3/4in (22cm) $4,000/6,000 Provenance: Sold The Collection of Gianni Versace, Sotheby’s New York, 5-7 April 2001, lot 122. Property from the Collection of Mary and Lou Silver, Indian Wells, California. Footnote: The color variations in the plaza foreground, the foliage and the distant hills and delicate cloud formations suggest this was executed by a master mosaicist. Saint Peter’s Square is surrounded by the arms of Bernini’s colonnade, with fountains by Bernini and Maderno and an Egyptian obelisk formerly in the Circus of Nero (see Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, Micromosaics: The Gilbert Collection, 2000, no. 92, p. 160 and Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, Micromosaics: Private Collections, 2016, no. 114, p. 152).

69 An Italian micromosaic panel of a peasant woman in a country landscape attributed to Luigi Tarantoni, Rome circa 1885 With plaque to back. the panel 21 1/2 x 14 1/2in (54.5 x 37cm) $8,000-12,000 Provenance: With G. Petochi, Rome, 1987. Property from the Collection of Mary and Lou Silver, Indian Wells, California. Footnote: Luigi Tarantoni worked for the Vatican and had a private workshop. He used a variety of signatures, or none, sometimes only RFSP (Vatican workshop). Many of his works were after paintings by Enrico Tarenghi (1848-1938) of cavaliers or peasants on a country road, probably the Appian Way. Examples by Tarantoni are in the Gilbert Collection (see Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, Micromosaics: The Gilbert Collection, 2000, no. 65 p. 114; no. 66 p. 125). Several examples of his cavaliers are found in private collections (see Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, Micromosaics: Private Collections, 2016 (nos. 48-51, pp. 91-97). A female figure similar to the present mosaic, signed by Tarantoni was offered Sotheby’s New York, 29 October 2014, lot 189. Another related example sold Venduehaus, Hague, 15 May 2012, lot 378. A matched pair depicting peasant men, each bearing Tarantoni’s signature sold Sotheby’s New York, 20 April 2009, lot 57. A fine example is in the Savelli collection (see M. G. Doves are frequently used in micromosaics as symbols of love and fidelity. A table top with this subject is found in the Gilbert Collection (see Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, Micromosaics: The Gilbert Collection, 2000, no.71, p. 133) and on a brooch in a private collection (Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, Micromosaics; Private Collections, 2016, no. 125, p. 215).

71 An Italian micromosaic panel of a peasant couple with a goat after an engraving by Bartolomeo Pinelli fourth quarter 19th century the panel 8 1/2 x 7in (22 x 18cm) $2,000/3,000 Provenance: With G. Petochi, Rome, 1987. Property from the Collection of Mary and Lou Silver, Indian Wells, California. Footnote: Nineteenth century micromosaics proliferate with images of peasants in regional costumes of Italy. These were copied from the multiple volumes of colored engravings by Bartolomeo Pinelli (1781-1835), such as La raccolta di cinquanta costumi pittoreschi, 1804 (see Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, Micromosaics: Private Collections, 2016, p. 15). This vignette is a version of The Goatherd of Tivoli (see Fogg Museum, M93; Le Bl. 6, d. R. 32, Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, Massachusetts).

72 A fine Italian micromosaic table top possibly Cesare Roccheggiani, Rome second half 19th century Centrally depicting St. Peter’s Square, surrounded by depictions of Roman landmarks including the Pantheon; the Arch of Titus; the Campidoglio; the Forum; the Colosseum; the Temple of Hercules Victor; Castel Sant’Angelo and the Tomb of Cecilia Metalla, within a giltwood frame. diameter of 24in (61cm) $20,000/30,000 Provenance: Property from the Collection of Mary and Lou Silver, Indian Wells, California. Footnote: The attribution of this table top to Roccheggiani can be made based not only on the subject matter but the refined execution and his signature detail of the trompe l’oeil Greek key border within two malachite bands. However, Roccheggiani’s Greek key borders were usually colored, leaving open the possibility that this tabletop came from Barberi’s atelier (see Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, Micromosaics: Private Collections, 2016, p. 312). A smaller table top, decorated with the same scenes and displaying the same characteristic border is recorded in a private collection (see Grieco & Gambino, Roman mosaic, l’arte del micromosaico, fra 700 e 800, 2001, p. 184). A top of slightly larger size centered by a scene of Romulus and Remus and the same surrounding scenes, bearing the label of Roccheggiani, was sold Christie’s New York, 28 April-7 May 2020, lot 157.

Fechin 20 x 24in (51 x 61cm) $70,000-100,000 Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist, circa 1927. An American estate. With Newhouse Galleries, New York, New York. Property from the Collection of Mary and Lou Silver, Indian Wells, California. Footnote: Nicolai Fechin was a painter whose mastery of color and composition and blending of realism, impressionism and abstraction influenced generations of artists. After graduating with the highest marks from the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg and traveling in Europe under a Prix de Rome, Fechin returned to his native Kazan, where he taught and painted. He exhibited his first work in the United States in 1910 in an international exhibition in Pittsburgh, PA. After immigrating with his family to New York in 1923 and working there for a few years, Fechin developed tuberculosis and moved West for a drier climate. In 1927 Fechin eventually settled with his family in Taos, NM, which was developing as an arts center. He had great affection for Taos and became a naturalized American citizen while living there. At an early age, Fechin had learned carving from his father. As an adult, he produced impressionistic sculpture, primarily from wood. His sculptor’s eye made possible the depth and dimensionality of the elements in his still life works, while pursuing a more abstracted, modernist style with his palette-knife technique. The artist’s estate has recognized this work as a fine example of Fechin’s oeuvre. DESIGN FOR THE HOME AND GARDEN | 141
