Andrew Jones Auctions begins 2019 with noteworthy collections in our Design for the Home and Garden Auction. Striving to find great private collections and present it in proper academic and historical context - we are delighted about what we have to offer from antiquities to modern art, Asian works of art to European porcelain. This auction features remarkable pieces sourced from estates and private collections from around California. A Malibu collector has brought together elegant French works like (lot 68) a fine Louis XVI style gilt bronze mounted plum pudding mahogany, and parquetry bureau plat by François Linke with exquisite inlay and a secure compartment to the side drawer, a Paul Sormani Louis XVI style gilt bronze mounted inlaid mahogany and bois satiné vitrine cabinet (lot 135) and an unusual pair of gilt bronze and marble low guéridons (lot 273). Another owner brings us an outstanding German Renaissance marquetry table cabinet (lot 360), inlaid with a spectacular intarsia composition of an arcade to the fall front. Another German work is a breathtaking oil on copper painting of a cathedral interior by Johann Ludwig Ernst Morganstern (lot 168A). In addition to the Châteauesque, we also offer a taste of the English Country House, with a number of rare pieces from the collection of Tom Buckley, esteemed Los Angeles connoisseur and interior decorator. A pair of white painted terracotta figures of vestal virgins (lot 359) recall the Classical style promoted by early 19th century artists and decorators like Vivant Denon and Thomas Hope. Complementing the figures is a lovely George III style painted pier table (lot 159), a monumental Regency circular giltwood mirror (lot 67), a set of side chairs by Gillow (lot 144) from the collection of Stuart Myers of Brentwood and from a Hollywood collector, a rare George III metamorphic library bench (lot 332). Going to the source of the Grand Tour Neoclassical inspiration, we have a 3000 year old Egyptian sarcophagus lid (lot 203). Traditional chic décor is accented with decorative objects and dining luxe like the vast service of Herend’s Rothchild Bird pattern dinner ware (lots 371-413) and a set of King’s Husk pattern silver flatware by Paul Storr (lot 9). Touches of Modernism are not to be missed with a selection of Robert Graham bronzes (lots 166-168) and a suite of Gilbert Rohde for Herman Miller bedroom furniture (lots 354-356) and works by British artists Albert Irvin (Lots 38 & 41), Howard Hodgkin (lot 131) and Frank Beanland (lot 133) from a Santa Barbara collection, among others. The concept of modern design also extends to fine jewelry and works from innovator David Webb (Lots 222-224) with diamond, gold, platinum and enamel bracelets and a brooch are just a few highlights from our fine jewelry offerings.

Lots 353-355 Gilbert Rohde (1894-1944) was an American industrial designer who helped bring the world style trends of the day French Art Deco, Art Moderne, Bauhaus International Style to the American market. Educated at the Art Students League and the Grand Central School of Art in New York City in the 1920s, he continued expanding his aesthetic horizons with numerous trips to Europe in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Rohde’s work was brought to cultural prominence when he convinced Dirk Jan De Pree, founder of the Herman Miller Furniture Company (founded 1905), which was known for producing high quality reproductions of traditional furniture styles, to begin producing his own original designs. It was with Gilbert Rohde’s contract with Herman Miller that his passion for Modernism brought streamlined designs to the American home and made the firm of Herman Miller synonymous with cutting edge design. Examples of Rohde’s work can be found in museums around the world including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Victoria and Albert Museum and the Vitra Design Museum, among others.

The Fima Ruchman Collection of Herend Rothschild Bird Pattern Porcelain The Herend Rothschild Bird pattern was created in 1850 for the Rothschild family of Europe, and later named for the family in 1860. The pattern was inspired by a Rothschild family story that the Baroness lost her pearl necklace while walking in her garden in Vienna. Several days later, the gardener found the necklace caught on a tree branch attracting the interest of fluttering, colorful birds. There are twelve variations or motifs of the pattern, each incorporating two birds perched on a tree branch laced with a pearl necklace within a border of butterflies and insects. The pieces offered in this collection were purchased directly from the factory in the early 1970s and hand painted by premier artisans at the Herend factory.
