Edwin Howland Blashfield Edwin Howland Blashfield was born in Brooklyn in 1848 to William H. Blashfield and Eliza Dodd, a portrait painter. Blashfield studied at Boston Latin School, Harvard College, and focused on engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.). While at M.I.T., Blashfield’s mother sent some of his drawings to the French academic painter Jean Léon Gérôme, whose interest convinced Blashfield’s father to allow his son to pursue a career in art. After initial painting courses at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Blashfield moved to Europe in 1867 to study with Léon Joseph Florentin Bonnat in Paris and remained in Europe until 1881, when he returned to the United States and settled in New York. While in New York, Blashfield began working for St. Nicholas Magazine and produced illustrations for books, and paintings and murals for private homes. Blashfield’s career took off with his work in the dome of the Manufacturer’s and Liberal Arts building at the 1893 World Columbian Exposition in Chicago, which elicited commissions from the likes of W.K. Vanderbilt and G. W. C. Drexel for their personal residences along with a host of other private and civic projects such as the grand ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, New York; the Detroit Public Library, Detroit, Michigan and the State Capitols of Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. A leader in the American Renaissance movement, he is best known for painting the murals on the dome of the Library of Congress Main Reading Room in Washington, DC. He was a member of numerous arts organizations, including the National Academy of Design, the National Society of Mural Painters in which he served as President from 1909 to 1914, the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. He served from 1920 to 1926 as President of the National Academy of Design. Among his many honors, Blashfield was awarded a Gold Medal by the National Academy of Design in 1934, an honorary membership in the American Institute of Architects and an honorary doctorate of fine arts by New York University in 1926. He served on the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts from 1912 to 1916. His circle of friends included sculptor Daniel Chester French, painters John Singer Sargent and Maxfield Parrish, and architect Cass Gilbert. He became president of the Society of Mural Painters, and of the Society of American Artists. Blashfield died in 1936 at his summer home on Cape Cod.

Everett and Ethel Reed Morss Everett Morss (1865-1933) was a Boston industrialist. He graduated from the M.I.T. in 1885 and married Ethel Reed in 1891. The Morsses had three children: Constance, Everett, Jr. and Noel. Everett Morss went on to become President of Simplex Wire & Cable Company (manufacturer of the first transatlantic telephone cable). Morss also served as President of the Franklin Foundation as well as Member of the Corporation of M.I.T. and its Treasurer (and briefly acting president while MIT was between presidents) and Director of several local utility companies and other businesses. He served on the War Industries Board during World War I.
The Commission Aware of fellow M.I.T. alumnus Edwin Blashfield’s talent and renown, Everett Morss commissioned seven murals for his Commonwealth Avenue, Boston home in 1914. The three largest paintings were installed in the Morsses dining room. The figures in Hospitality are portraits of Ethel Morss and their three children in an idealized setting. As set forth in the family records, the three attendants around the central figure bear the symbols of hospitality presented to arriving guests in the fifteenth century: the palm of welcome, the basin and ewer, and the golden ship of sweetmeats. The family portraits in Hospitality bore such a resemblance to the family that in the Morsses sent their friends a Christmas card with a photograph of the painting. Mrs. Morss noted on the back of one card that “The Morss family never looked so ‘grand’ as this fresco depicts them, except Polly [the family’s parrot] at the base. She sees all, and more too!” The following year, all seven paintings were displayed at a special exhibition in the Art Institute of Chicago, and the three large paintings were exhibited later that year at the Detroit Museum of Art. Having enjoyed Blashfield’s mural decorations in his own home, in 1923 Everett Morss funded Blashfield’s full-wall murals in M.I.T.’s Walker Memorial (in the space now known as Morss Hall). The central panel entitled Alma Mater depicts allegories of various branches of knowledge and the pair of flanking panels are allegorical portrait works featuring likenesses of Francis A. Walker and his wife Exene Evelyn Stoughton Walker.
The Morss Family Christmas Card, 1928, featuring Hospitality.
Comparable Works
Additional Notes:
A related large-scale work entitled Three Muses, which rendered very specific personal likenesses in the guises of Literature, Painting and Poetry, was sold Christie’s, New York, 25 February 2014, lot 130. A rare surviving mural entitled Trumpets of Missouri, commissioned in 1918 by the Daughters of the American Revolution, Kansas City Chapter, to commemorate Missouri’s contribution to the United States effort in World War I, was sold Christie’s, New York, 21 May 2014, lot 96.
Though the recent book Edwin Howland Blashfield: Master American Muralist described the suite of murals as lost, they have been continuously in the family’s possession, from Everett Morss’s house in Boston to his son’s home in Manchester, Massachusetts and then to his grand-daughter’s home in Los Angeles, from whence they came to be offered here. The central figure in Hospitality had the facial features and hair altered sometime between its creation in 1914 and the family Christmas card photo of the work in 1928 at the request of Ethel Morss to reflect her contemporary likeness.

He was the eldest son of William Fettes, an Edinburgh merchant and his wife, Margaret Rae. Naturally enough, Sir William having been brought in a mercantile household followed in his father’s footsteps as a merchant initially in the trading of tea and wines from a premises upon the High Street in Edinburgh. Thereafter, he also prospered as an insurance underwriter as well as a military contractor during the Napoleonic Wars during which time he had amassed a fortune. Sir William also became a director of the British Linen Bank. He also did not neglect his civic duty having served as the Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh from 1804 – 06. Sir William acquired the estate of Comely Bank which lies today in the Stockbridge district of Edinburgh. Sir William married Maria Malcolm on the 24th March 1787 at Edinburgh. The college’s location is near Comely Bank, Sir William’s old estate.

He served in the British Army as a General and was the Colonel of the 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards. At one time he was the Governor of Plymouth in the County of Devon. As John never married upon his death in 1752, his younger brother, William succeeded him as the 3rd Earl of Dunmore. The Earls of Dunmore are a junior branch of the Ducal House of Atholl. The progenitor of the Murrays of Atholl and Dunmore was Freskin de Moravia, a Fleming, of Duffus, in Moray who acquired lands from King David I of Scotland who reigned between 1124 and 1153. Freskin is thought to have been a chieftain of the Duffus branch of the Royal House of Moray. From him descend the Murrays of Tullibardine, ancestors of the Dukes of Atholl and the Earls of Dunmore. The Dukes of Atholl are the Chiefs of the Clan Murray and their seat is Blair Castle, Blair Atholl near Pitlochry in the County of Perthshire.

There were branches located in the Counties of Roscommon, Westmeath, King’s County and Queen’s County and elsewhere in Ireland. Bearing in mind the date of hallmarking there are number of possible candidates amongst family members for the ownership of this cup although it is difficult to pin down any one individual with any amount of certainty.

114 A George III sterling silver oval footed salver John Schofield, London 1784 Centrally engraved with a coat-of-arms and motto. height 1 3/4in (4.5cm); width 19in (48cm); depth 14in (36cm); weight approximately 49oz troy $700-900 Footnote: The armorial bearings as engraved upon this salver are those of the family of Purvis impaling Garrett with an escutcheon of pretence in the form a lozenge for Dickson thereon another escutcheon of pretence also for Dickson. These armorial bearings undoubtedly commemorate the two of his three marriages of Admiral John Child Purvis, Royal Navy (born 13th March 1747 died 23rd February 1825), of Vicars Hill House, Whitsbury, near Lymington in the County of Hampshire. As noted, that the admiral married three times. His first wife, Catherine Sowers (died 9th February 1789) whom he married at the Parish Church of St Mary, Portsea in the County of Hampshire on the 11th October 1784 appears not to have been armigerous; whilst both his second wife, Mary Garrett whom he married at the Parish Church of Sts Peter and Paul, Wymering in the County of Hampshire on the 11thMarch 1790 and his third wife, Elizabeth Dickson (died 27th July 1856) whom he married at the Parish Church of St Peter, Titchfield in the County of Hampshire on the 2nd August 1804 certainly came from armigerous families. By his first wife, Catherine he had two sons and a daughter. There would appear no other issue from his subsequent marriages to Mary and Elizabeth. Sadly, there is a dearth of genealogical information on his first and second wives. However, more is known about the family background of his third wife, Elizabeth Dickson. John was the second son of George Purvis and his wife, Mary Oadham. The family long had a naval tradition with many members of the family serving in the Royal Navy. John’s grandfather another George served as the Member of Parliament for Aldeburgh and was at one time Comptroller of the Navy in 1735. John himself had a successful naval career serving at sea during the American War of Independence and during the French Revolutionary Wars of the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. He was further service at sea during the Peninsula War during the first and second decade of the 19th Century. John eventually retired from the sea and was appointed a Commissioner of the Navy Board. He achieved the rank of an Admiral of the Blue. As mentioned above a little more is known about John’s third wife, Elizabeth Dickson. She was the only daughter and heiress of Admiral Sir Archibald Dickson (died 1803), the 1st Baronet of Hardingham in the County of Norfolk and his wife, Elizabeth Porter. She was the widow and cousin of Captain William Dickson (died 1795) of the 22nd Regiment of Foot whom she married in 1791.

115 A matched set of five Victorian sterling silver shell and dolphin form master salts the bowls marked for John Samuel Hunt, London, four marked for 1839, one marked for 1841, three bases marked for John Mortimer & John Samuel Hunt, London 1842, two bases unmarked All with engraved heraldic crest and further inscribed to foot ENGLAND, one with impressed number 587. height 3 1/2in (9cm); width 4 3/4in (12cm); depth 3 1/2in (9cm); total weight approximately 67oz troy $3,000-5,000 Footnote: The crest as engraved upon this matched set of salts is that of the family of Holford. This matched set of salts was in the possession of the family of Holford, of Westonbirt House, Weston Birt in the County of Gloucestershire. The Holford family were in ownership of the Westonbirt Estate from 1665 until 1927. The family were reputed to be descended from the ancient family of Holford, of Holford in the County of Cheshire. The Westonbirt Holfords themselves stem from a Sir Richard Holford (born 1633 died 1714), of Lincoln’s Inn who was a Master in Chancery. It was Sir Richard who brought the Westonbirt Estate into the Holford family by marrying as his first wife, Sarah Crew, the daughter and heiress of John Crew, of Westonbirt in 1665. The family over subsequent generations accrued its immense wealth during the 18th Century by supplying fresh water to the City of London and its immediate environs through a canal. Given the date of hallmarking of these salts, together with the hypothesis stated above it is likely that the salts were acquired by Robert Stayner Holford (born 16th March 1808 died 22nd February 1892). Robert was the eldest son of George Peter Holford and his wife, Anne Daniell. He married Mary Anne Lindsay (died 13th February 1901) at the Parish Church of St George Hanover Square in the County of Middlesex on the 5th August 1854. Mary Anne was the second and youngest daughter of Lieutenant General Sir James Lindsay of Balcarres in the County of Fife and his wife, Anne Trotter. Robert during his lifetime was noted as being a gardening and landscaping enthusiast, and an art collector. He also served as the Member of Parliament for the seat of Gloucestershire East between 1854 and 1872, as well as a Justice of the Peace for the Counties of Gloucestershire and Wiltshire. He also as the High Sheriff of Gloucestershire for the year 1843. Robert rebuilt his family seat of Westonbirt House in an Elizabethan style and redesigned its gardens and the woodland surrounding the house. He also established an arboretum that still exists today.

200 A diminutive George I/II burr elm ‘mulberry’ serpentine chest of drawers second quarter 18th century height 31 1/2in (80cm); width 31 1/2in (80cm); depth 16 1/2in (42cm) $10,000-15,000 Provenance: With Studio Antiques, Ltd., Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, UK, 20 October 1975. Property of John H. Ford IV, Los Angeles, California. Footnote: Today, the prevalent view is that much of the furniture which was commonly described to be ‘mulberry’ is in fact stained burr alder, ash, elm, maple, oak, sycamore or other knotty timbers. The idea was for the burl timber to resemble the figuring of tortoiseshell which became fashionable after the influential designs produced by famed French cabinet makers Pierre Golle and André Charles Boulle in the 17th century. The chest of drawers offered here reflects a very definite Dutch influence in its form. The serpentine profile would have been complicated to engineer particularly with the pointed ears at the sides which begin with the top and extend down the case, through the drawers and to the base. A related chest from the same period also displaying noted Dutch aesthetics is illustrated L. Synge, Mallet’s Great English Furniture. London, 1991, p. 36, fig. 21.
