Design for the Home and Garden March 28 | Lots 1 - 293
The year 2021 brings the promise that our lives will resume and we will be able to get back to doing the things we love and for us, that is being able to see and talk with you, unmasked face to unmasked face. It has been just about one year since we had to temporarily close our doors in order to rearrange our operations to continue holding sales in a physically distanced format. While we have not reached the end of the tunnel, we see the light that is there. In line with the concept of physical distancing, easier of course in the outdoors, we can help with a wealth of garden furniture, ornaments and sculpture, just in time for Spring. Featured are works of Italian limestone, including a set of ten fanciful, life-size Commedia dell’Arte figures (lots 151-160) and a breathtaking Italian Neoclassical style Carrara marble bench (lot 148), all from the manicured grounds of a historic Beverly Hills residence. The garden section also includes a plethora of garden furniture from Brown Jordan and features a pair of rockers designed by Walter Lamb (lot 72), among other items. The auction is also packed with antiques, fine art, antiquities, early works of art, rare books, silver, garden furniture and sculptures from sources such as the estates of Eileen Aaron, June Ebensteiner, Ruth Harvey and Keith McCoy as well as the collections of Raymond Enkeboll, Mr. & Mrs. Mark Goodson, Evelyn Nathanson, Mary & Lou Silver and private collections from Beverly Hills, Montecito, San Diego and San Francisco. The array of fine art includes paintings, prints and sculpture from Old Masters to contemporary works. The collection of Evelyn Nathanson features pieces by Vu Cao Dam, Dietz Edzard, Suzanne Eisendieck, William Samuel Horton, Jean Jansem and Haynes King. Three works by Jacques Martin-Ferrières will also come up for bid, including Henri IV et Le Pont Neuf, 1918 (lot 270), as well as two pieces by Emilio Grau Sala. Striking Parisian scenes from Edouard Léon Cortès and Antoine Blanchard are part of the estate of Eileen Aaron. Howard Norton Cook’s The City, #4 (lot 56) give a NeoCubist perspective on New York City lights through apartment windowpanes. The collection of Raymond Enkeboll boasts early pieces from 16th and 17th century Continental School artists, including a bucolic 19th century Circle of Aelbert Jacobsz Cuyp oil on canvas of Cows at rest in a sunlit pasture (lot 62) and early European works, from a 15th century French carved oak model of the Archangel Gabriel (lot 27) to Italian Baroque giltwood pricket sticks. The Modern Design section features works by Maison Jansen as well as pieces designed by Maison Bagues, Hector Guimard, Jorgen Kastholm, Severin Hansen, Mogens Koch, Jules LeLeu, Harvey Probber, Luciano Vistosi, an enameled and patinated bronze and pewter Festival table by the father-son team of Philip and Kelvin Laverne (lot 75) and a Marc Lalique Cactus center table (lot 96). Additional highlights include Greek antiquities, such as a Canosan terracotta model of Thalia, Muse of Comedy (lot 19), carpets, fine porcelain highlighted by an extensive Herend dinner service in the Indian Basket Multicolor pattern (lots 7 & 8), silver, rare books including McKenney’s History of the Indian Tribes of North America (lot 291) and a remarkable and possibly unique photographic folio of the Santa Fe Railroad route by William Henry Jackson, circa 1875 (lot 293).

A GROUP OF TEN ITALIAN LIFESIZE LIMESTONE COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE FIGURES Lots 151-160 The Commedia dell’Arte was an early form of professional theater which originated in Italy in the 15th century. It involved masked characters and improvised performances based on loosely scripted scenarios. The characters of the commedia usually represent fixed social types, such as foolish old men, devious servants, or military officers full of false bravado. The standard plots revolved around compelling themes of sex, jealousy, love and aging. Many of the basic plot elements can be traced back to Roman comedies, though some were inspired by contemporary novellas, current events and even local news. Models of 10 of the more than 300 Commedia cast of characters offered here are the Vecchio (master) Dottore Balanzone and the Zanni (clowns/servants) Arleccino, Beppe-Nappa, Brighella, Colombina, Diamantina, Frittellino, Gioppino, Pulcinella and Scaramuccia.

Footnote: William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) began his photographic career in his home state of New York, but then established himself as a photographer in various other places before joining the Hayden Survey in 1877-1878 as official photographer, in which capacity he became the first person to photograph the Yellowstone region. He opened a photographic studio in Denver which he operated for twenty years between trips to various other locales before moving back to the East. In 1942, Jackson was honored by the Explorer’s Club for his 80,000 photographs of the American West. When he died at the age of 99, he was recognized as one of the last surviving Civil War veterans, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Considered one of the most prominent pioneer photographers of the Old West at the time of his death, he has continued to hold a preeminent place in photographic history ever since. Jackson’s skill and artistry are universally recognized. William H. Goetzmann states: “William Henry Jackson, the greatest of all Western photographers [with the] ability to capture the many scenes of sublime beauty in the West on his photographic plates and stereopticon slides, did more than anyone else to publicize the tourist’s West. Jackson, like the avant-garde writers, the scientists, and even the local colorists of his time, was helping to usher in a new era of realism that would in part replace, and at the same time, as far as subject matter was concerned, parallel the romanticism of an earlier day”. 158 | Andrew Jones Auctions
