Diamonds, Colored Gemstones and Pearls
Clients are advised that many diamonds, colored gemstones and pearls are treated to enhance their properties. For example, heating is commonly used to improve the color or transparency of rubies and sapphires; oiling is commonly used to enhance the clarity of emeralds. Such enhancement procedures are widely accepted by the international jewelry profession. While heat enhancement of color is generally believed to be permanent, the process may impact the durability of the gemstone and special care of the stone may be required over time. Gemstones which have been oiled may need to be re-oiled after a period of years to retain their maximum clarity.
Diamonds
Andrew Jones Auctions shares the concerns expressed by the United Nations Security Council with respect to uncut diamonds potentially coming from Angola and Sierra Leone. We will comply fully with any obligations imposed in connection with the Security Council’s resolutions regarding these matters.
Gemological Reports
As a matter of policy, Andrew Jones Auctions will obtain gemological reports from officially recognized laboratories for certain gemstones offered for sale. A summary of these reports in included in the catalogue description for a lot and a copy of the report is available on request. It is not possible for Andrew Jones Auctions to obtain such reports for all gemstones offered at auction. Prospective buyers should, therefore, bear in mind that colored gemstones offered for sale without a gemological report or a specific statement in the catalogue entry that it may have been treated to enhance color, clarity or transparency. Enhancement of colored gemstones may affect market value and our presale estimates reflect the assumption that any colored gemstone not described in the catalogue entry as natural may have been treated. Please Note: Variations in approach and technology between different gemological laboratories may result in a lack of consensus among reports as to whether any particular gemstone has been treated, the extent of the treatment and whether treatment is permanent. There may also be a similar lack of consensus between different laboratories or private appraisers in the grading of diamonds. All gemstone weights are approximations only and although an independent laboratory grading may be used in the catalogue text, we cannot guarantee such gradings.
Certificates of Authenticity
Various manufactures may not issue certificates of authenticity upon request. Except as specifically noted in the catalogue, Andrew Jones Auctions will not be required to furnish the purchaser with a certificate of authenticity from the manufacturer at any time. Unless the requirements for a recission under the Conditions of Sale are satisfied, the failure of a manufacturer to issue a certificate will not constitute grounds to rescind the sale. Although we endeavor to mention in our descriptions, significant defects, absent stones and the like, we do not guarantee that the descriptions are comprehensive. Please examine all lots carefully prior to bidding. It is the responsibility
66 | Andrew Jones Auctions
of the prospective bidder, or his/her agent, to determine the condition of a lot during the preview. Condition reports have been prepared and are available on request and are listed in the online catalogues. Images shown in the catalogue may appear larger or smaller than actual size.
Country of Origin
While Andrew Jones Auctions attempts to obtain accurate information on the country of origin of gemstones, we do not guarantee the correctness of the catalogue or other descriptions of gemstones including country of origin. In accordance with the current US restrictions, import into the US of materials which originated from Burma during the tenure of this restriction (most notably jade and ruby) is not permitted. In either of these above mentioned cases concerning CITES, Burmese or any restricted material, it is the responsibility of the buyer to obtain any necessary licenses or documentation that is required to ship any materials that fall under these legal restrictions. Failure to obtain permission or licenses to import or export items purchased at auction does not justify cancellation of sale or delay in payment settlement.

VS1 & VS2
Very Slightly Included
Still difficult to see with the untrained eye.
SI1 & SI2
Slightly Included
Easy (SI1) or very easy (SI2) to see with a 10x lens. When these have been located with a 10x lens, look at the stone with the naked eye and the inclusions can sometimes be spotted.
I1, I2 & I3
Imperfect
May be eye-visible face up without the aid of a lens. In I3, they may threaten the stone’s durability.
