Kate is a film producer, philanthropist and art collector who began her career working for her father on his many television series. She is actively involved in creating new works based on these perennial favorites, developing new screenplays and television series. Some of her other producing credits include TAG: The Assassination Game, Wyatt Earp: Return to Tombstone for CBS and Saving Grace, the Emmy nominated documentary. Kate’s late husband left her the rights to the iconic film A Streetcar Named Desire which he co-produced. She maximizes its potential by keeping it in syndication and licensing film clips throughout the world. Most of the earnings from these endeavors for Streetcar go to support the work of The Motion Picture and Television Fund. She is a trustee of the Actors Fund of America and serves on the Council of the Next Generation of the Motion Picture and Television Fund. She supports the American Film Institute and United Cerebral Palsy, in memory of her mother Rita Edelman, who was President for Life of the Los Angeles Chapter. Deane F. Johnson was a legendary entertainment attorney and a preeminent alumnus of Stanford University. He was a trustee of the American Film Institute and the California Institute of Technology and a member of the board at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He was also a director of the Los Angeles Lakers, the Boy Scouts of America, the Actors Fund and the American Museum of the Moving Image. Deane excelled in all facets of life. He was a respected attorney and a successful producer, a connoisseur and a collector, a philanthropist, an environmentalist and a humanitarian. Deane died on February 28, 1999 at the age of 80 after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s disease. During their life together, Kate and Deane traveled extensively and acquired works of art with which they emotionally connected. The Adolphe-Felix Cals Portrait of an Elderly Man with a Beard and a Hat, 1875 (lot 185) accompanied them on their various moves from coast to coast over the decades as a member of their family and hung in a place of honor in the dining room of their Beverly Hills home. The Maurice Brianchon Nature Morte au Tapis Rouge (lot 194) is a painting the couple acquired on a trip to Paris. The compelling light in Jozef Israëls’ exotic Souvenir de Tanger (lot 197) speaks to their sense of exploration. Kate and Deane’s mutual love of flowers is evident in the collection from the Achille Laugé Nature Morte au Bouquet de Roses, 1909 (lot 182) to the four works by Richard Pionk (lots 174, 176, 177 and 179) who was a personal friend of the couple. The Francisco Toledo En el Circo, circa 1970 (lot 207) is particularly significant to Kate as it was a piece purchased by her mother during a trip to Mexico and it was a work her mother was especially proud to display. After her husband’s death, Kate honored his memory by establishing the Deane F. Johnson Alzheimer’s Research Foundation dedicated to funding research focused on the prevention and cure of Alzheimer’s disease. Today, she chairs the board of directors and works to mobilize funding to support the foundation’s priorities and goals.

Steenhoff, Onze kunst 3 (1904) Jozef Israels, p. 29-51 (illus. op p. 36.). Jozef Israëls (27 January 1824 - 12 August 1911) was a leading member of the group of landscape painters referred to as the Hague School and, during his lifetime compared to Jean-François Millet., considered the most respected Dutch artist of the second half of the nineteenth century and even hailed as a second Rembrandt by some. In 1855, after spending time in various art academies including the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and working as an academic history and landscape painter, after an illness he spent time convalescing in the fishing village of Zandvoort near Haarlem. It was there he witnessed the poverty of the fishermen and their families and his style changed dramatically. Israëls’ work took on a poignant sense of empathy with the subjects and moments of life he captured. In May 1894 Jozef Israëls traveled to Spain and North Africa with his son Isaac, also a painter, and the writer Frans Erens. Working often with his son, Israëls’ paintings became more luminous, resembling Isaac’s style. The piece offered here captures the artist’s late oeuvre with glowing light, subtle brushwork and a very sensitive approach to his subject matter. Design for the Home and Garden | 79

Lots 292-363 Born August 1915 in Los Angeles, California to Abraham and Bessie Levin, Jack (Uncle Jack to his friends and loved ones) lived a wonderful and passionate 103 years on this earth before he passed away peacefully at home in January 2019. Abraham and Bessie were Jewish ĂŠmigrĂŠs from Belopillia, just outside of Kiev, Ukraine and arrived in California in the early 1910s. Abraham, a graphic design artist, was tragically killed in a car accident when Jack was just four years old. Jack and his one-year older sister Charlotte were raised alone by their loving mother Bessie, who owned a grocery store on Temple Street in Boyle Heights. During World War II, Jack served as a Sergeant in the US Army in Italy. After the war, he met the love of his life, Jimmy Saip, in the haberdashery section of The May Company. Jack and Jimmy were partners in business as well as life as they became interior decorators and started the firm Ellison Interiors. They also co-founded the International Interior Design Association, which is still active today. Jack and Jimmy shared their lives for 43 years until Jimmy passed away in 1989. In his later years, Jack was the principal for the Branson School of Design, a Japanese design school which had a branch in San Francisco and Japan to which he frequently traveled. His insatiable curiosity kept him young and connected him with people from all generations. Uncle Jack enjoyed his 100th birthday party with 165 close friends and relatives from young to old.

Sir John Robert Steell RSA (18 September 1804 - 15 September 1891) was one of thirteen children born to John Steell senior (1779-1849), a carver and guilder, and Margaret Gourlay. Steell initially followed his father, training to be a carver himself, being apprenticed in 1818. Working with his father, his first major commission came in 1827 when the North British Fire Insurance Company commissioned a huge timber statue of St Andrew to be placed on the outside of their office. His first work to attract international attention was Alexander taming Bucephalus carved in 1832-33 (cast in bronze in 1883, and now standing in the quadrangle of Edinburgh City Chambers). Around 1838 he was appointed as Sculptor to Her Majesty the Queen, a post which was later recognized as part of the Royal Household in Scotland. In 1840 he opened Scotland’s first foundry dedicated to sculpture, on Grove Street in Edinburgh, to cast his model of the Duke of Wellington. Steell frequently exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy in London. He was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1876 following the unveiling of his statue The Prince Consort, an equestrian depiction of Prince Albert, which stands in the center of Charlotte Square in Edinburgh. Steell’s best known pieces include the statue of Sir Walter Scott sitting with his dog Maida under the Scott Monument, carved 1840-46 from a single 30 ton block of Carrara marble; a stone statue of Queen Victoria on top of the Royal Scottish Academy, 1844 and a bronze equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington outside Register House in Edinburgh, 1852. Steel also produced several likenesses of Robert Burns, national poet of Scotland among many other works.

The Description de l’Egypte remains as arguably the greatest achievement of Napoleon’s Expedition / Invasion into Egypt from 1798-1801 as well as the most ambitious scientific publication of the 19th Century. Publication began in 1803 but was not fully completed until 1830 with this the Second Edition. This monumental work paved the way to the modern field of Egyptology. From the onset Napoleon’s colonial intent in Egypt was to follow his (envisioned) swift military conquest, with the rapid implementation of economic and social policies so as to create a large swath of French controlled territory at the epicenter of all trade between East and West. With this grandiose plan in mind hundreds of French civilians were deployed with the invading troupes to Egypt led by a group of scientists known as the corps des savants from the Institut de France. Though poorly equipped to face the incredible odds and brutal hardships they would be up against these savants were some of the finest scientific minds of the time. The co-leaders were Gaspard Monge and Claude Louis Berthollet. Other prominent savants were Dominique Vivant Denon, Nicolas Conte, ReneNicolas Desgenettes, Joseph Fourier, E.T. Saint Hillaire, Jean Baptitste Jollois, Marie-Jules Cesar Lelorgne Savigny and Henri-Joseph Redoute among many others.
