Six Points for an Architecture Resistance
Author: Kenneth Frampton
Kenneth Frampton himself, creates a new theoretical perspective by bringing back the geographical components of architecture which should be adopted in modern architecture as the goals to find a neutral territory where social value, contextual aspect, future qualities are being inherited without directly incorporating the traditions to respond to the loss of regionalism. Universal progressive qualities of architecture are spoken through the six point of resistance. In his third point, he creates a concession between critical regionalism and universal civilization emphasizing on elements are derived indirectly from the peculiarities of a particular place. One may find its governing inspiration from the range and quality of the local light, a tectonic, topography or specific elements of the specific place. I strongly agree as an introduction of architecture regardless of the context will lose the spirits of the place as everything is progressively created up to a point where people, environment & architecture compromise. However, he points out the architecture has to be progressive in relate to the current movement and tendency as well. Relatively, He talks about Ando's aspect where the sense of place is created through the qualities created by his concrete structures, the sense shaped from beneath but not the mass which believes to have comply to both regionalism and global modernity. Therefore, I believe that an awareness is awoken where we, the future designers need to comply to the context in regionalism with progressive pace. In the fourth point, he specified on the vitality where contextual features takes place giving rise to a characteristic of a place, neglecting a free standing product with no relevance. Therefore, a city is created where there's no limitation of physical space with its border as the beginning of the place, unfolding the beauty beneath instead of revealing the ending qualities of place. A good regional architecture follows its "place making" essence and elements while also adapts to global modernity. However, our current urbanscapes, streetscapes has relatively express itself with the sense of loss of place which disconnectivity is unveiled due to presence of form and facades faking, and with spaces being where only function is being carried out. In conclusion, both topics focus on the globalization and regionalism and how it will affect the future and current place-making condition, an identity of a place or an architecture and how one shall comply these through his "Critical Regionalism". As we perceived from today's architecture industry, are more financially driven with a little relevance towards the contextual regionalism therefore one can identify one place by its name but hardly by its place-making identity where we can see places as globalized carrying the same qualities of being "placeless".
