A GANG IS A GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS WHO SHARE AN IDENTITY AND ENGAGE IN ILLEGAL ACTIVITY. Illegal things that gangs do include fighting, stealing, selling drugs

and making gang graffiti in neighborhoods.

When someone joins a gang they are forced to change the way they look and act so they represent the gang. Bobby is in a gang, the gang makes him break the law, skip school and sell drugs just so he can be part of the group. Since Bobby has to participate in illegal activity, it is difficult for him to get good grades and plan for college.

THERE IS A PICTURE OF BOBBY IN THE MIDDLE OF A MAZE BELOW. THE GANG HAS TOLD BOBBY THAT HE IS NOT ALLOWED TO HANG OUT WITH HIS BROTHER SAM, WHO IS NOT IN A GANG. WITH A CRAYON, SEE IF YOU CAN HELP BOBBY FIND A WAY OUT OF THE GANG SO HE CAN HANG OUT WITH HIS BROTHER SAM.

EVERYONE HAS INDIVIDUALS IN THEIR LIVES THAT CARE ABOUT THEM. WITH A COLORED PENCIL, PUT THE NAMES OF THE PEOPLE THAT CARE ABOUT YOU IN THE SPACES BELOW.

If you join a gang, the gang makes you leave the people you care about and they start to keep you from talking to them.

Eventually, all that is left in your life is the GANG.

There are certain things neighborhoods with gangs have that other neighborhoods do not. The house on the left is a place that gangs do not hang out and the house on the right is a place that gangs do hang out.

WITH A CRAYON, CIRCLE THE THINGS IN THE HOUSE ON THE RIGHT THAT SHOW SIGNS THAT GANGS HANG OUT THERE. WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED, COLOR IN THE GANG-FREE HOUSE ON THE LEFT.

•

The house on the right has boarded up windows on all sides of the house. This means that the house is abandoned. Abandoned houses are the kinds of places gang members like to sell drugs and do other illegal things at. The house on the right also has gang graffiti on the front of it. This is a sign that the area is dangerous and gangs in the neighborhood use this house for illegal things. This method of identification is called the Broken Glass Theory. WITH A

THAT SHOW THE GANG GRAFFITI AND THE BOARDED UP WINDOWS.

STORY OF SAM. COLOR T

On Monday morning, after a long summer of barbecues and soccer games, Bobby woke up and helped his brother Sam get ready for his first day of high school. They brushed their teeth, combed their hair and put on their favorite shirts before running downstairs to eat the hot bowl of oatmeal their mom made. 11

At the bus stop Bobby and Sam noticed a kid t hey never saw before. They introduced themselves and the boy said his name was Tim. While t hey waited Tim started to make fun of Sam by calling him shor. "GIVE ME YOUR LUNCH MONEY SHORTY," Tim said, "DON'T MAKE GET MY GANG TOGETHER TO BEAT YOU DOWN." Sam was scared and looked to his brot her Bobby to make the bully stop teasing him. Bobby looked at the bully and said, "LEAVE MY BROTHER ALONE HE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO YOU." ''WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT?" Tim said, "l'M IN A GANG. IF YOU KEEP RUNNING YOUR MOUTH , l'M GONNA GET MY CREW TO BEAT YOU AND YOUR BROTHER DOWN." Suddenly, the school bus arrived and the boys got on. Still angry about the sit uat ion, Bobby and Sam sat on the bus next to each other quietly the whole way to school.

Lunch period ended and Bo y and Sam walked to gym class together. "HEY SAM," yelled a voice fr om behind. Sam turned around, "YEA?" It was Br andon, one of the kids that didn't graduate from 8th grade the year before. "I SAW THAT NEW KID TIM HIT YOU AND TAKE YOUR CHOCOLATE MILK DURING LUNCH SAM. YOU KNOW, IF YOU WANT TIM TO STOP PICKING ON YOU, YOU CAN JOIN MY GANG. IF YOU'RE IN MY GANG, ME AND MY FRIENDS WILL PROTECT YOU FROM DUDES LIKE TIM AND YOU WILL NEVER GET PICKED ON AGAIN." "NO THANKS," Sam said, "I HEARD THAT GANGS MAKE PEOPLE FAIL IN SCHOOL AND GET YOU ARRESTED BY THE POLICE." "I'll JOIN," inter r upted Bobby. "l'M SICK OF SEEING TIM PICK ON MY BROTHER AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE HE DOESN'T MESS WITH US AGAIN." "GOOD," said Brandon, "NOW ON YOUR ONE OF US."

The next day at the bus stop Tim didn't even l ook at Bobby or Sam. Word spread around

school after l unch that Bobby was in Brandon's gang and Tim was afraid to pick on Sam. After

the first week of school passed without any more incidents Bobby felt good about the decision

he made. After their last cl ass Bobby met Sam at his class room and they walked to the school

bus to go home.

After a short trip they got off the bus and noticed a gang symbol spray painted on their front door. ''OH NO/' Sam said, "WHAT IS THAT?" "LOOKS LIKE TIM WANTS SOME TROUBLE

WITH ME AND MY FRIENDS/' Bobby said. "GO INSIDE SAM/' Bobby ordered, "LET ME GET MY FRIENDS SO WE CAN GO TAG UP TIM'S HOUSE." "DON'T DO IT, LETS JUST CALL THE

POLICE," Sam begged. "NO WAY, I CAN HANDLE THIS, YOU JUST GO INSIDE." Then Bobby began to walk down the street to get his gang member friends to vandalize Tim's house. Bobby knocked on the door and Brandon answered. "WHAT'S UP?" "TIM TAGGED MY HOUSE WITH HIS GANG TRYING TO DISRESPECT ME. I CAME BY TO SEE IF YOU WANT TO TAG UP HIS HOUSE," Bobby said. "OK, LET ME GET MY SPRAY PAINT, I'll BE RIGHT BACK." Brandon ran upstairs when all the sudden Bobby heard gun shots fired down the street near his house. "OH NO!" Bobby screamed. He ran back down the street to his house when he saw a car speeding away as Tim and his gang member friends were shooting his house.

'T

Once he made it to the house he swung open the fr ont door . There at the br eakfast table sitting next to a warm bowl of oatmeal was Sam, sitting with his face down after getting shot. "SOMEBODY HELP!'' Bobby star ted cr ying at the sight of his br other Sam. He called 911 and in a few minutes the police and ambulance ar r ived. 11 15 HE GONNA BE OK?" 11 11 Bobby screamed at the EMT. l'M SORRY SON," the EMT said, l'M SORRY."

BELOW ARE ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS ON PAGE 23. USE THIS SHEET TO

CHECK YOUR ANSWERS.

1. Bobby joined the gang because he wanted to protect his brother Sam from being picked on by Tim, a bully and a gang member. 2. Tim cal l ed Sam names, punched him in the eye, threatened to beat him and his brother up and stole his milk during lunch. 3. Sam told Brandon that the reason the did not want to join the gang was because gangs make you fail in school and get you arrested by the police. 4. When Bobby became a gang member Tim was afraid to pick on Sam at first. In the end, Sam was put in more danger than he was before Bobby joined the gang. 5. When Sam pointed out graffiti on the door to Bobby, they both should have went to a safe place and told the police or a trusted adult. 6. When they started having problems with Tim at the bus stop, Sam and Bobby should have told their principal or a trusted adul t. If they did, Tim may have been suspended from school or banned from riding the school bus. 7. This is true. It is possible for something bad to happen to you if someone in your family or someone you live with is in a gang. Jusďż˝ like in the Story of Sam, a gang can do something to hurt a gang member in your house, but could hurt you instead.
