INDONESIA ART INSTITUTE OF PADANGPANJANG

ASKI Padangpanjang (Art Academy of Indonesia Traditional Music of Padangpanjang) The birth of Indonesia Art Institute of Padangpanjang was preceded by the establishment of Art Academy of Indonesia Traditional Music (ASKI) Padangpanjang in 1965 through the Minister’s Decree of Basic Education and Culture number 84 year 1965 on 22 December 1965. The establishment of ASKI Padangpanjang is constituted by the potential possessed by West Sumatra and the initiative of artists and community leaders to revive and develop culture and art specifically by establishing the Conservatory of Traditional Music A and B. Both of these Conservatories (A and B) become the embryo of establishing ASKI Padangpanjang and nowadays are known

as ISI Padangpanjang. Initially, ASKI Padangpanjang has two departments namely Traditional Music (Karawitan) Department and Dance Department. Department of western music is established when people’s enthusiasms toward western music get higher. ASKI Padangpanjang officially changed its status into Art Higher School of Indonesia of Padangpanjang (STSI Padangpanjang) on 15 June 1999 based on President’s Decree number 56 year 1999 and then inaugurated on 4 December 1999 by General Director of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education, Prof. Dr. Satriyo Sumantri Brojonegoro.

ION

ntists of Malay art and culture of he year of 2030” THE MEANING OF VISION AND MISSION Artist is someone famous and wellknown in public/society because of his/ her achievement and ability in the art world. And this is organized particularly by Indonesia Art Institute of Padangpanjang. Scientist is someone who has knowledge particularly art related knowledge or science and other art related things. Art and culture are art entities viewed and recognized as part of society’s culture or tradition. Malay is people particularly in archipelago whose culture is ideally based on Islamic norms and values. Nusantara is a contemporary Indonesian term for the Indonesian archipelago. It originated in Old Javanese and literally means “archipelago”. In Malay, Nusantara means the Malay world.

The word Nusantara was taken from an oath by Gajah Mada in 1336, as written in the Old Javanese Pararaton and Nagarakretagama. Gajah Mada was a powerful military leader and prime minister of Majapahit who was credited with bringing the empire to its peak of glory. Today in Indonesian, Nusantara is synonymous with Indonesian archipelago or the national territory of Indonesia, in this sense the term Nusantara excludes Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and the Philippines. Therefore, the words of Artists and Scientists of Malay Art and Culture of Nusantara (Archipelago) means that ISI Padangpanjang will produce artists and art scientist who prioritize Malay art and culture as the basic of their creativities or studies/ researchs in order to actualize the glories of ourselves, institute, nation, and state. | 23

THEATER Theater education held in the Theater department of ISI Padangpanjang is in the level of Strata 1 (S.1). Education held in Theater department refers to three competencies namely the competency of Dramaturgy, the competency of Directing, and the competency of characterization. Market demand for the graduates of theater department tends to increase recently. It’s in accordance with the development of other industries related to theater such as film and television drama that need the skills of actor/ actress, director, artistic director, and etc and these skills are taught in theater education of ISI Padangpanjang. The development of technology has made the boundaries between theater, film, television drama, and other forms of art getting thinner.
