David Green’s preoccupation is with both natural and urban landscapes. His beautifully worked surfaces are also just as much about paint marks in chromatic greys, which render his works understated, mysterious, ineffable, sublime and as timeless as the “landscapes, endless horizons and the subtle shifts of light at the start and end of the day”, which he says inspires his work.

The Warmun Art Centre has a reputation as one of the most renowned and respected centres for Aboriginal art in Australia. At the time of its establishment in 1998, Deputy Headmaster David Bean, was planning the first Kimberley Cross Cultural Tour for a group of Year 11 Hale School students to visit the Warmun Community. Subsequent tours, and the commencement of an Indigenous Scholarship Program at Hale School has seen a mutually beneficial relationship develop between Hale School and the Warmun Community. With several boys from the remote community having now graduated from Hale School, it seems a natural fit that Fine Art @ Hale should build on the relationship established by the school, and this year, we are delighted to be able to exhibit a selection of work by Warmun artists. Paintings from Warmun are characterised by their textured surfaces built from various, locally sourced, coloured ochres. The works are a tangible link to the East Kimberley region, and the cultural knowledge of these artists. The Fine Art @ Hale Committee gratefully acknowledge the generous support of the staff and artists of the Warmun Art Centre who have partnered with us this year to make this part of the exhibition possible.
We trust that all patrons enjoy the addition of these works to the 2019 Fine Art @ Hale Exhibition

Student Engagement This year Fine Art @ Hale has been able to extend its exhibition time to enable Hale School staff and students to utilise and enjoy the resources of an on-campus visual arts exhibition, prior to opening to the general public. Activities have included student visits from the Junior School, right through to our ATAR Visual Arts students. Together with Lisa Hakkinen (Junior School Art), our curator, Lee Kinsella has developed some engaging worksheets that help students Write About Art – and so develop important skills in critical observation and analysis. Boys from the boarding houses have been treated to an evening tour of the exhibition and talk by guest artist, Carly le Cerf, who spoke of the pursuit of art as a career, and her particular journey as a rural based artist. Getting ‘hands on’ experience, several Service Learning students also volunteered to assist with setting up the exhibition and serving in our weekend café. We especially acknowledge and thank Headmaster, Mr Dean Dell’Oro for his commitment to the Visual Arts and its place in boys’ education, and trust that if your son attends Hale School, he has enjoyed the opportunity to engage with the Visual Arts in this significant on-campus exhibition of established and emerging Western Australian artists. For art lovers attending the weekend exhibition (young and old), please feel free to collect your own worksheet from the sales desk and start ‘Writing About Art!’

SPECIAL THANKS In its 27 year history, over 100 volunteers have served on the Fine Art @ Hale Committee, all contributing to make Fine Art @ Hale an integral part of the Hale School calendar and campus. This year, as their sons complete Year 12 at Hale School, we farewell, acknowledge and sincerely thank Di Hassell and Kate Radley-Smith for their significant contribution to the Fine Art @ Hale Exhibition.
Joshua Cohenca, winner of 2018 FineArt@Hale Scholarship with one of his portraits.
Studying visual art at Hale School is an amazing opportunity, and I would encourage anyone who enjoys creating to immerse themselves in the program. For me, the art department was always an escape from the classroom, and a place of relaxation and enjoyment. When I looked at my timetable and saw that I had art, I would immediately be excited to get to class and paint - a feeling I just didn’t get in any other subject. While I always knew that I enjoyed painting, the work of the fantastic teachers in the art department has helped me improve my technique, develop my style, and how to appreciate all kinds of art. I feel privileged to be awarded the FineArt@Hale Scholarship. Joshua Cohenca Recipient of the 2018 FineArt@Hale Scholarship
