QPAC THEATRE PROPOSAL
“
BRIEF
A new civic space...
....a world class amenity
THEATRE USAGE The proposal seeks to address the requirement for a new 1500 seat theatre complex on the corner of the existing Queensland Performing Arts precinct located in South Brisbane. The new theatre will house predominately ballet and stage shows, but provide a flexible platform for a broad range of musical and theatrical performances. The new civic space will be positioned to create a world class amenity that contemporises a new approach to theatre design and provide a new asset for visitors, performers, workers and the local community.

KEY PRINCIPLES FOR NEW THEATRE DESIGN Draw people to the edges of the building to engage with street scape. Create active street frontages, permeability & pedestrian interaction through site. Respond to place, context & users through subtropical design, material sensibility & respecting the existing legacy of QPAC. Provide a new theatre for the 21st century market place. Apply a new medium to the performing arts platform. Generate a strong visual & physical connection between the performers & the audience.

BUILDING FORM DEVELOPMENT
HISTORIC REFERENCE Concrete Plinth Concrete plinth introduced to carry through QPAC’s existing monolithic expression. The strong horizontal band creates a ground element for the new building volume to float above and grow out of its historic beginnings.
5
Colonade PLINTH & COLONNADE EXPRESSIONS
Concrete column Colonnade interprets its historical neighbour & is used to support concrete plinth & create dynamic ground plane edges.
SUBTROPICAL EXPRESSION The existing site as a vacant grass park land helps soften the hard edges of the adjacent QPAC precinct. An extension of this greenery & parkland will be expressed in the new proposal through suspended planters, articulated planted edges, and vertical grower trellis systems along the facade.
6
NEW FACADE EXPRESSION INTRODUCED THROUGH SCREENING ‘VEIL’ ELEMENT
These elements generate a better built street scape & respond to Brisbane’s subtropical environmental qualities.

FACADE TREATMENT
CURTAIN MOTIF
As the internal program is somewhat rigid and fixed in place, the external envelope of the building can be manipulated to give the building a dramatic built form and unique quality to its surrounding context.
The stage curtain is one of the most identifiable elements in the theatre program.
To give the new theatre a unique identity and level of articulation, the facade of the building adapts a series of vertical ribboning elements modelled off the stage curtain.
It is drawn at the openning & closing of every performance & is rich in the mind of the audience & performers.
The pattened facade will act as a perforated veil to the building to provide sun shading, whilst maximising transparency to its edges.
FACADE DETAIL BRASS PERFORATED VEIL Abstracting brass detailing expressed throughout QPAC, a brass perforated facade curtains the new proposal and filters warm dapled lighting into the new space.

A DRAMATIC CORNER MARKER
LANTERN PORTAL
A lantern like entry marks the corner of the busy intersection of Russell & Grey Street. The idea has been developed to create a dramatic main entrance for patrons to the new theatre, who can ‘slip’ under the dropping curtain as a performer would.
A glassed canopy and perforated skin allows for light to permeate out through the building’s facade which is used as an eye catcher to passerbyers, when the theatre is in full use.

PLAY HOUSE LIGHT ATRIUM The second entry for the proposed theatre re-utilises the exisiting Play House theatre entrance to maintain the existing formal entry & built form of QPAC. The space has been opened up through the use of a glazed roof and a full height void creating an internal atrium between the two theatres. This approach maximises natural light, circulation as well as providing visual cues to other levels.

CONNECTION TO PERFORMERS STREET ENGAGEMENT
CROSSING PATHS Embracing transparency between performeers, musicians, actors, comedien rehearsal zones & the public, illustrates a deeper meaning and process behind the acts. Opportunities for crowd gathering and the in-proptu chat add to the the public’s experience in a way previously not experienced at QPAC. The Grey Street edge acts as a new extension to the south bank promenade, creating a new destination for buskers & street performers to flood the site. A series of stepped seats form nooks for crowds to gather and enjoy local entertainment, whilst open rehearsal studios skirt the frontage allowing people to get a glimpse int o the building’s usage.

Visual connectivity between levels is achieved through a central void. The main bar is located on Ground which extends towards Russell St for further engagment with the public. The Bar & foyer space is inteded for people to come down and use before, after and during intermissions of shows. Suspended planters carry through the existing QPAC typology into common spaces.
