COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTORS Existing community groups & local industry will play a vital role in establishing the new precinct for Charleville. Distinguishing a well established network of creative business owners and community groups indicate there is signifigant opportunities for a communal creative facility.

The story that drives the Station proposal is a rich narrative exploring the ideas of Charleville’s unique historical & environmental context aggregating its need to once again place itself back on the map as a highly sought after destination. Charleville’s once glorious past of the cattle & wool industry have well expired & the township is in desperate need for a precinct that captures local skills, local materials & local history, whilst driving capital back into the locals pockets. Sited between two pre-war heritage buildings, the proposal consists of three main stages. An extension of the existing heritage fire station facade into an exhibition centre, an artist workshop and studio accommodation facility and finally a microbrewery pavilion envisaged to distribute the town’s identity amongst broader Queensland. A floating brick & timber screen contribute heavily to the provocative story line, notching out a datum line that represents a graph of the Fire’s that have destroyed buildings & lives throughout the Charleville’s town and fringe in the past century. A screen made up of charred mulga battens from the native trees of the district contrast against the raw pine battens above, depicting the timber framed structures that have since been consumed by fire. The screen is then balanced out with a series of handmade bricks inscribed with names, dates & buildings effect by fires of that year. These elements collectively describe the approach to this proposal, one that stands strongly for producing thought provoking architecture through relatively conventional techniques that adapt local contribution & resources.
