HISTORY Charleville is South West Queensland’s largest town centre & provides a civic centre for surrounding rural townships to engage with as well as a perfect stepping stone through to Outback Queensland. Charleville has enjoyed a wealthy past, with the success of the wool & beef industry generating a strong economic grounding for the community. The loss of the wool industry, and impact of environmental disastors (drought & flood) have depleted the town’s importance & as a result the population & economomy is struggling.

CULTURAL HEART Whilst Charleville has been vunerable to environmental & economical challenges, the townhship still maintains a strong community spirit. The town has many positive atributes that will allow Charleville to once again be reinvigorated, with the potential to act as an incubator for surrounding rural Queensland towns. Charleville is also a wonderful place to live. It provides connection to the landscape, to other people. It provides space that is less bounded and controlled. It provides time for a “cityzen” it provides escape from minutiae and fine-grained regulation.

AUSTRALIAN MENS SHED ASSOCIATION WORKSHOP/FABRICATOR

CHARLEVILLE MOZAIC MAKERS COMMUNITY GROUP

A Colaborative workshop facility located all over Australia, with a local shed established in Charleville.

Charleville Mozaic Makers is one of many community groups located around town. The group meet together and contribute ideas and partake in glass making and mozaic classes. The group are recognised on the local council website & have their own facebook page.

The concept is to use a shared space with workshop, tools, large scale fabricating equipment and coloaborating and exchanging information with like minded creative users. The space is based on an anual membership subscription.


Utilising Charlevilles Grass root industries to contribute to a new community hub

CHARLEVILLE PERFORMING ARTS FESTIVAL COMMUNITY EVENTS ORGANISER Charleville hosts an annual performing arts festival where schools participate in theatre, film and musicals. The organisation also host Galas & dances in the town hall to raise money.

Made in Murweh is a newly opened retail shop that specialises in craft/ clothing/ jewelry and all other things made in the local area by locals. The shop has had a successful start, popular with both locals and tourists.

A niche pop up shop openned up in the old pub, which was founded by local resident who has a passion for collecting vintage specialties. Items can be sold and bought.

Paul is one of a few resident musicians in the local area who plays at the Charleville RSL, Camp cattle, as well as Roma, Emerald and Toowoomba.

Grymsdyke Farm is a research facility, fabrication workshop and living-working space for architects, artists, designers and those interested in materials and processes of making. There are workshops, seminars and residencies with the aim of exploring the essential connections between processes of design, making and place. The practice involves building relationships with other individuals who share a similar enthusiasm for making. Through this communal and collaborative approach, the Farm is a place where people can exchange ideas, working methods, interests and expertise.

A unique not-for-profit organisation located in the Adelaide city centre and at Seppeltsfield in the Barossa, JamFactory is supported by the South Australian Government and is recognised globally as a centre for excellence. JamFactory’s purpose-built studios for ceramics, glass, furniture and metal design provide skills and business training for artists and designers through our rigorous two-year Associate training program.

James Squire has created a series of micro brew houses included inside their esteemed bar and restaurants. Small batch beers are brewed and monitored onsite and served directly in the bar. INTERVENTION: RE-PURPOSE THE OLD 1938 FIRE STATION SITE


CREATIVE HUB PROJECT SITE DRIVER The Australian Workers Union (AWU) is one of Australia’s largest and oldest trade unions. It traces its origins to unions founded in the pastoral and mining industries in the 1880s and currently has approximately 100,000 members. It has exercised an influence on the Australian trade union movement and on the Australian Labor Party, throughout its history. (WIKIPEDIA) Charleville has had two Workers Union buildings that have contributed heavily to its past as a working community. The original workers union building was built in 1900, which was constructed of timber boards and strap bracing. In 1938 a new Australian Workers union building was constructed which is still present on the given site today. It features rendered brick walls reminicent of art deco detailing. The building today is currently left unused, which provides an opportunity to repourpose and reinvigorate the message behind the building. The new station proposal positions the workers union building as a collaborative workshop space as a way of paying homage to the worker.

EXISTING LANEWAYS LOCATED BETWEEN ALFRED AND GATALEA STREET WILL BE REINVIGORATED WITH A COMMUNITY BASED MURAL COMPETITION TO CREATE ARTWORK THAT DEFINES A NEW SPINE THROUGH THE PROPOSED CREATIVE HUB. THE SPINE AIMS TO CONNECT THE HERITAGE HOUSE THROUGH TO THE SCHOOL OF ARTS.

AT THE CENTRE OF THE SPINE IS THE PROPOSED CREATIVE INCUBATOR, A HUB FOR THE COMMUNITY TO ENGAGE WITH SOCIALLY & ECONOMICALLY.

SCHOOL OF ARTS THE EXISTING SCHOOL OF ARTS BUILDING IS AT THE BOOK END OF THE JOURNEY. THE ORIGINAL ARTS EDUCATION FACILITY IN CHARLEVILLE CAN INTEGRATE ITS PROGRAM INTO THE ART & MANUFACTURING PLATFORM OF THE PROPOSED HUB.

PRE 1930 AWU BUILDING

The new buildings draw their language heavily from the contextual heritage of the area. Expressed timber studs with horizontal boards and diagonal brace straps is a technique evident in the original Australian Workers Uninion building in Charleville. This language is still evident in many character houses around Charleville today. The screening will provide a sense of identity as well as protection from the harsh western sun.
