Field Study Before beginning the 1:200 design work, I visited liverpool to study four urban spaces through a variety of mediums to understand how the spaces succeed through aesthetics. This involved measuring the spaces on site and then creating a 1:200 card model to work from. Grapics were then created to illustrate the successful aesthetic(s) in each space.

Campbell Square texture a smooth wash of textures created by the hardscape and building facades is interrupted by the coarse texture of the trees
FieldStudy Andy Croft
Association the rough and smooth textures invoke images of tree lined avenues, despite the form being entirely different. Image Credit: University of North Carolina
Campbell Square Enclosure The recessed building facades create enclosure, along with the partition walls and grouping of trees, creating areas of high enclosure and comfortable exposure
FieldStudy Andy Croft
Association the step-recess facades and intimate nature of the space are similar to that of chester. Image Credit: www. chesterbagatelle.co.uk
Campbell Square pattern the arrangement of paving stones, panelling of building facades, lines of trees and multi-toned brick work create a range of patterns within the square
FieldStudy Andy Croft
Association the short lines that compose these patterns resemble an ordered array of match sticks. Image Credit: Aonestationary
Wolstenholme Square colour muted browns and greys of the brick and stone cause the bright colours of the metal work structures to appear even more vivid and vibrant
FieldStudy Andy Croft
Association the vibrant colours and their form are similar to that of amusement parks.

Concert steps line multiple fine vertical lines and long straight leading lines draw the vision though the space as well as upwards
FieldStudy Andy Croft
Association the multitude of long lines resembles that of wire fencing.

Concert steps movement the narrow corridor of concert steps causes single direction linear movement at a slow and constant pace, with bursts of faster movement when ascending/descending steps, represented in the soundwave below along the section .

Association the narrow space and directional movement are similar to that of a single track road. Image Credit: John Tom, BBC
Concert steps colour dark muted greys dominate the palette of this space, with the yellow lights and red building facades giving a vibrant contrast

Association the single instances of vibrant colours in this space are similar to that of a traffic light in an urban landscape Image Credit: drivingchangehoi
concert Square line the planters form long boundary lines that divide the space, as do the uneven vegetation lines. Vertical lines of the lamp posts repeat throughout the space and the trees break the formality with short angular lines

Association the square and layered effect the lines create in the landscape are similar to the form of a stage Image Credit: newspaper.li
concert Square pattern formal geometric patterns exist in the paving and arrangement of parasols, bollars and trees, which compliment the dated architecture of the building facades

Association the combination of patterns and shapes almost mimics a patchwork quilt. Image Credit: Flickr user saidunsaids
